Study of permeability characteristics of membranes

Pressure-permeation experiments were performed with the concentration-clamp cell. Streaming potentials and hydraulic permeabilities were measured for an AMF C-103 cation-exchange membrane bounded by 0.1 N NaCl solutions. The streaming potential calculated from the slope of the recorded potential differences versus the applied pressure, yields a value of 1.895 millivolt/dekabar. When comparison with other membranes of similar characteristics could be made, good agreement was found. The values of the hydraulic permeability varied somewhat with the applied pressure difference and are between 1.3 x 10 to the minus 8th power and 3.9 x 10 to the minus 8th power sq cm/dekabar-sec. The specific hydraulic permeabilities were also calculated and compared with data from the literature. Fair agreement was found. The diffusion coefficient of the chloride ion in the AMF C-103 membrane was calculated, using Fick's first law of diffusion based on ion concentrations calculated from the Donnan equilibrium concentration of Cl(-).

Analysis of truss, beam, frame, and membrane components

Truss components are considered, taking into account composite truss structures, truss analysis, column members, and truss joints. Beam components are discussed, giving attention to composite beams, laminated beams, and sandwich beams. Composite frame components and composite membrane components are examined. A description is given of examples of flat membrane components and examples of curved membrane elements. It is pointed out that composite structural design and analysis is a highly interactive, iterative procedure which does not lend itself readily to characterization by design or analysis function only.-

Membrane has high urea-rejection properties

Membranes are synthesized from ethylene and nitrogen in RF plasma at low power, gas-flow rates, and pressure. Ethylene and nitrogen are used because flow rate and partial pressure of each gas can be independently controlled to produce optimum conditions for synthesizing membrane. Membrane is particularly useful in recycling and purifying water.

Development of anion-selective membranes

Methods were studied of preparing anion-exchange membranes that would have low resistance, high selectivity, and physical and chemical stability when used in acidic media in a redox energy storage system. Of the twelve systems selected for study, only the system that was based on crosslinked poly-4-vinylpyridinium chloride produced physically strong membranes when equilibrated in l M HCl. The resistivity of the best membrane was 12 ohm-cm, and the transference number for chloride ions was 0.81.

Dynamic response of membranes with finite elements

A general set of finite-element equations is developed for treating the nonlinear dynamic response of membranes consisting of complex nonlinear materials. The approach proposed by Key (1974) for a most complete treatment of the finite-element method to the nonlinear dynamic analysis of solids is used in developing the nonlinear equations of motion for membranes with cubic quadrilateral finite elements. The computations are kept general with respect to material modeling by computing the deformation gradient and requiring a constitutive subroutine to supply the Cauchy stress. An example calculation of the vibration of a square membrane demonstrates the accuracy of the formulation for small deformation theory and shows the nonlinear effect of large deformations.

On the explicit finite element formulation of the dynamic contact problem of hyperelastic membranes

Contact-impact problems involving finite deformation axisymmetric membranes are solved by the finite element method with explicit time integration. The formulation of the membrane element and the contact constraint conditions are discussed. The hyperelastic, compressible Blatz and Ko material is used to model the material properties of the membrane. Two example problems are presented.

Water vapor diffusion membrane development

An application of the water vapor diffusion technique is examined whereby the permeated water vapor is vented to space vacuum to alleviate on-board waste storage and provide supplemental cooling. The work reported herein deals primarily with the vapor diffusion-heat rejection (VD-HR) as it applies to the Space Shuttle. A stack configuration was selected, designed and fabricated. An asymmetric cellulose acetate membrane, used in reverse osmosis application was selected and a special spacer was designed to enhance mixing and promote mass transfer. A skid-mount unit was assembled from components used in the bench unit although no attempt was made to render it flight-suitable. The operating conditions of the VD-HR were examined and defined and a 60-day continuous test was carried out. The membranes performed very well throughout the test; no membrane rupture and no unusual flux decay was observed. In addition, a tentative design for a flight-suitable VD-HR unit was made.

Continuous-flow electrophoresis: Membrane-associated deviations of buffer pH and conductivity

The deviations in buffer pH and conductivity which occur near the electrode membranes in continuous-flow electrophoresis were studied in the Beckman charged particle electrophoresis system and the Hanning FF-5 preparative electrophoresis instrument. The nature of the membranes separating the electrode compartments from the electrophoresis chamber, the electric field strength, and the flow rate of electrophoresis buffer were all found to influence the formation of the pH and conductivity gradients. Variations in electrode buffer flow rate and the time of electrophoresis were less important. The results obtained supported the hypothesis that a combination of Donnan membrane effects and the differing ionic mobilities in the electrophoresis buffer was responsible for the formation of the gradients. The significance of the results for the design and stable operation of continuous-flow electrophoresis apparatus was discussed.

Development of a preprototype thermoelectric integrated membrane evaporation subsystem for water recovery

A three-man urine water recovery preprototype subsystem using a new concept to provide efficient potable water recovery from waste fluids on extended duration space flights has been designed, fabricated, and tested. Low power, compactness, and gravity insensitive operation are featured in this vacuum distillation subsystem that combines a hollow fiber polysulfone membrane evaporator with a thermoelectric heat pump. Application and integration of these key elements have solved problems inherent in previous reclamation subsystem designs. The hollow fiber elements provide positive liquid/gas phase control with no moving parts other than a waste liquid recirculation pump and a product water withdrawal pump. Tubular membranes provide structural integrity, improving on previous flat sheet membrane designs. A thermoelectric heat pump provides latent energy recovery.

Influence of hydrogen chemisorption kinetics on the interpretation of hydrogen transport through iron membranes

The influence of a specific surface reaction on the transport of gas-phase hydrogen through iron membranes has been investigated on the basis of model calculations. The surface reaction involves an adsorbed molecular hydrogen precursor between the gas phase and the dissociated chemisorbed state. The calculations demonstrate that the surface reaction for the H2/Fe system makes significant contributions to the time delay associated with the transient hydrogen transport through iron membranes, even under conditions where the steady-state hydrogen transport is independent of the surface reaction. These contributions to the time delay are interpreted in terms of an effective diffusivity, which is a function of the pressure on the entrance side and the thickness of the membrane.

Reissner's membrane and the spiral ligament in normal rats and those treated with ethacrynic acid

A description is presented of recent ultrastructural findings in Reissner's membrane and the spiral ligament in rats treated daily with ethacrynic acid during the 2nd and 3rd weeks of postnatal life, a period of final maturation of the inner ear and its fluids. A distension of Reissner's membrane in every cochlear turn, indicative of mild endolymphatic hydrops, was found to occur in animals that received a higher dose of ethacrynic acid. Ultrastructurally, the cytoplasm of the epithelial cells of Reissner's membrane showed increased electron density after treatment with ethacrynic acid. This increase was most pronounced in animals treated with a greater quantity of the drug. The epithelial cells had similar ultracellular features throughout except that the cells were much thinner in the region of maximal distension.

Kinetics of copper ion absorption by cross-linked calcium polyacrylate membranes

The absorption of copper ions from aqueous copper acetate solutions by cross-linked calcium acrylate membranes was found to obey parabolic kinetics similar to that found for oxidation of metals that form protective oxide layers. For pure calcium polyacrylate membranes the rate constant was essentially independent of copper acetate concentration and film thickness. For a cross-linked copolymer film of polyvinyl alcohol and calcium polyacrylate, the rate constant was much greater and dependent on the concentration of copper acetate. The proposed mechanism in each case involves the formation of a copper polyacrylate phase on the surface of the membrane. The diffusion of the copper ion through this phase appears to be the rate controlling step for the copolymer film. The diffusion of the calcium ion is apparently the rate controlling step for the calcium polyacrylate. At low pH, the copper polyacrylate phase consists of the normal copper salt; at higher pH, the phase appears to be the basic copper salt.

An algorithm for finite element analysis of partly wrinkled membranes

A generalization and numerical implementation is presented of the Stein-Hedgepeth (1961) continuum theory for the analysis of partly wrinkled membranes, such as the tensioned membrane surfaces which are found in spacecraft structural components. The approach has its basis in experimental observations showing that when wrinkles develop in a membrane parallel to the x direction, the associated overall contraction in the y direction exceeds that predicted by the Poisson's ratio effect.
