Effect of digital scrambling on satellite communication links

Digital data scrambling has been considered for communication systems using NRZ symbol formats. The purpose is to increase the number of transitions in the data to improve the performance of the symbol synchronizer. This is accomplished without expanding the bandwidth but at the expense of increasing the data bit error rate (BER). Models for the scramblers/descramblers of practical interest are presented together with the appropriate link model. The effects of scrambling on the performance of coded and uncoded links are studied. The results are illustrated by application to the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) links. Conclusions regarding the usefulness of scrambling are also given.

Cross-Linking Aromatic Polymers With Ionizing Radiation

Resistance to heat and solvents increased. Certain aromatic polymers containing radiation-sensitive methylene groups cross-linked through methylene groups upon exposure to ionizing radiation. Cross-linked polymers resistant to most organic solvents and generally more resistant to high temperatures, with less tendency to creep under load. No significant embrittlement of parts fabricated from these polymers when degree of cross-linking, as controlled by irradiation dose, kept at moderate level.

Space communication link propagation data for selected cities within the multiple beam and steerable antenna coverage areas of the advanced communications technology satellite

Rain attenuation propagation data for 68 cities within the coverage area of the multiple beam and steerable antennas of the Advanced Communications Technology Satellite (ACTS) are presented. These data provide the necessary data base for purposes of communication link power budgeting and rain attenuation mitigation controller design. These propagation parameters are derived by applying the ACTS Rain Attenuation Prediction Model to these 68 locations. The propagation parameters enumerated in tabular form for each location are as follows: (1) physical description of the link and location (e.g., latitude, longitude, antenna elevation angle, etc.), link availability versus attenuation margin (also in graphical form), fading time across fade depths of 3, 5, 8, and 15 dB versus fade duration, and required fade control response time for controller availabilities of 99.999, 99.99, 99.9, and 99 percent versus sub-threshold attenuation levels. The data for these specific locations can be taken to be representative of regions near these locations.

Study of the generator/motor operation of induction machines in a high frequency link space power system

Static power conversion systems have traditionally utilized dc current or voltage source links for converting power from one ac or dc form to another since it readily achieves the temporary energy storage required to decouple the input from the output. Such links, however, result in bulky dc capacitors and/or inductors and lead to relatively high losses in the converters due to stresses on the semiconductor switches. The feasibility of utilizing a high frequency sinusoidal voltage link to accomplish the energy storage and decoupling function is examined. In particular, a type of resonant six pulse bridge interface converter is proposed which utilizes zero voltage switching principles to minimize switching losses and uses an easy to implement technique for pulse density modulation to control the amplitude, frequency, and the waveshape of the synthesized low frequency voltage or current. Adaptation of the proposed topology for power conversion to single-phase ac and dc voltage or current outputs is shown to be straight forward. The feasibility of the proposed power circuit and control technique for both active and passive loads are verified by means of simulation and experiment.

Tailoring of composite links for optimal damped elasto-dynamic performance

A method is developed for the optimal design of composite links based on dynamic performance criteria directly related to structural modal damping and dynamic stiffness. An integrated mechanics theory correlates structural composite damping to the parameters of basic composite material systems, laminate parameters, link shape, and modal deformations. The inclusion of modal properties allows the selective minimization of vibrations associated with specific modes. Ply angles and fiber volumes are tailored to obtain optimal combinations of damping and stiffness. Applications to simple composite links indicate wide margins for trade-offs and illustrate the importance of various design variables to the optimal design.

A versatile power converter for high-frequency link systems

A single-phase HF link appears to be an attractive alternative to the dc link commonly used in power conversion systems. Here, a power converter suitable for one-step conversion of the single-phase HF link voltage to the three-phase LF voltages typically required for interfacing with system sources and loads is proposed. The converter utilizes zero-voltage switching principles to minimize switching losses and an easy-to-implement technique of pulse-density modulation for the control of the amplitude, frequency, and waveshape of the synthesized LF signals. Adaptation of the proposed topology for power conversion to single-phase ac and dc voltage or current outputs is shown to be straightforward. The feasibility of the proposed power circuit and the control technique has been experimentally verified.

Approximate minimum-time trajectories for 2-link flexible manipulators

Powell's nonlinear programming code, VF02AD, was used to generate approximate minimum-time tip trajectories for 2-link semi-rigid and flexible manipulator movements in the horizontal plane. The manipulator is modeled with an efficient finite-element scheme for an n-link, m-joint system with horizontal-plane bending only. Constraints on the trajectory include boundary conditions on position and energy for a rest-to-rest maneuver, straight-line tracking between boundary positions, and motor torque limits. Trajectory comparisons utilize a change in the link stiffness, EI, to transition from the semi-rigid to flexible case. Results show the level of compliance necessary to excite significant modal behavior. Quiescence of the final configuration is examined with the finite-element model.

Manipulators with flexible links: A simple model and experiments

A simple dynamic model proposed for flexible links is briefly reviewed and experimental control results are presented for different flexible systems. A simple dynamic model is useful for rapid prototyping of manipulators and their control systems, for possible application to manipulator design decisions, and for real time computation as might be applied in model based or feedforward control. Such a model is proposed, with the further advantage that clear physical arguments and explanations can be associated with its simplifying features and with its resulting analytical properties. The model is mathematically equivalent to Rayleigh's method. Taking the example of planar bending, the approach originates in its choice of two amplitude variables, typically chosen as the link end rotations referenced to the chord (or the tangent) motion of the link. This particular choice is key in establishing the advantageous features of the model, and it was used to support the series of experiments reported.

A control approach for robots with flexible links and rigid end-effectors

Multiarm flexible robots with dexterous end effectors are currently being considered in such tasks as satellite retrieval, servicing and repair where a two phase problem can be identified: Phase 1, robot positioning in space; Phase 2, object retrieval. Some issues in Phase 1 regarding modelling and control strategies for a robotic system comprised of along flexible arm and a rigid three-link end effector are presented. The control objective is to maintain the last (rigid) link stationary in space in the presence of an additive disturbance caused by the flexible energy in the first link after a positioning maneuver has been accomplished. Several configuration strategies can be considered, and optimal decentralized servocompensators can be designed. Preliminary computer simulations are included for a simple proportional controller to illustrate the approach.

Experiments in identification and control of flexible-link manipulators

A report is presented on an ongoing effort for end-point position control of flexible-link manipulators under realistic conditions in laboratory setups consisting of one- and two-link manipulators. The authors treat modeling, identification, and control of flexible-link manipulators that are required to carry payloads, possibly unknown and varying, while undergoing disturbance effects from the environments and the workspace. The various identification and control techniques being investigated are summarized, with emphasis on the ability of the controller to adjust to changes in dynamics, payload, and working environment. It is found that time-domain methods offer identified model structures that are readily available for control design, whereas frequency-domain methods, particularly the time-varying transfer function estimation approach developed for this application, are more desirable when rapid controller tuning is required.

High-speed digital fiber optic links for satellite traffic

Large aperture phased array antennas operating at millimeter wave frequencies are designed for space-based communications and imaging platforms. Array elements are comprised of active T/R modules which are linked to the central processing unit through high-speed fiber-optic networks. The system architecture satisfying system requirements at millimeter wave frequency is T/R level data mixing where data and frequency reference signals are distributed independently before mixing at the T/R modules. This paper demonstrates design procedures of a low loss high-speed fiber-optic link used for transmission of data signals over 600-900 MHz bandwidth inside satellite. The fiber-optic link is characterized for transmission of analog and digital data. A dynamic range of 79 dB/MHz was measured for analog data over the bandwidth. On the other hand, for bursted SMSK satellite traffic at 220 Mbps rates, BER of 2 x 10 to the -7th was measured for E(b)/N(o) of 14.3 dB.

On dynamics and control of multi-link flexible space manipulators

In this paper dynamics, inverse dynamics, and control problems for multi-link flexible space manipulators are presented. In deriving the flexible manipulator dynamics the following are assumed: flexible deformations are relatively small; angular rates of the links are much smaller than their fundamental frequencies; nonlinear terms (centrifugal and Coriolis forces) in the flexible manipulator model are the same as those in the rigid body model. These assumptions are reasonable for large space manipulators, such as the space crane. Flexible displacements are measured with respect to the rigid body configuration, for which a linear time-varying system is obtained. The inverse dynamics problem consists of determination of joint torques, given tip trajectory, such that joint angles in flexible configuration are equal to the angles in the rigid body configuration. The manipulator control system consists of the feedforward compensation and feedback control loops. Simulation results of a two-link space crane with large payload show that the performance of this linearized dynamics and control approach is reasonable and robust subject to parameter variations during slew operations.
