Open-source library for performance-portable neutrino reaction rates: Application to neutron star mergers

A realistic and detailed description of neutrinos in binary neutron star (BNS) mergers is essential to build reliable models of such systems. To this end, we present bns_nurates, a novel open-source numerical library designed for the efficient on-the-fly computation of neutrino interactions, with particular focus on regimes relevant to BNS mergers. bns_nurates targets a higher level of accuracy and realism in the implementation of commonly employed reactions by accounting for relevant microphysics effects on the interactions, such as weak magnetism and mean field effects. It also includes the contributions of inelastic neutrino scattering off electrons and positrons and (inverse) nucleon decays. Finally, it offers a way to reconstruct the neutrino distribution function in the framework of moment-based transport schemes. As a first application, we compute both energy-dependent and energy-integrated neutrino emissivities and opacities for conditions extracted from a BNS merger simulation with m1 transport scheme. We find some qualitative differences in the results when considering the impact of the additional relevant reactions and of microphysics effects. For example, neutrino-electron/positron scattering reactions are important for the energy exchange of heavy-type neutrinos as they do not undergo semileptonic charged-current processes, when μ± are not accounted for. Moreover, weak magnetism and mean field effects can significantly modify the contribution of β processes for electron-type (anti)neutrinos, increasing at the same time the importance of (inverse) neutron decays. Here, the improved treatment for the reaction rates also modifies the conditions at which neutrinos decouple from matter in the system, potentially affecting their emission spectra.

To Derive or Not to Derive: I/O Libraries Take Charge of Derived Quantities Computation

The ever-increasing volume of data produced by HPC simulations necessitates scalable methods for data exploration and knowledge extraction. Scientific data analysis often involves complex queries across distributed datasets, requiring manipulation of multiple primary variables and generating derived data that needs to be handled efficiently, creating challenges for applications that need to parse many large datasets. Relying on individual applications to handle all intermediate data generally leads to redundant computations across studies and unnecessary data transfers. In this paper, we investigate the performance of different approaches where applications define derived variables as quantities of interest (QoIs) and offload the computation and transfer of these QoIs to the I/O library. This significantly reduces redundancy and optimizes data movement across the distributed storage and processing infrastructure by allowing control over when and where derived variables are computed. We present a detailed analysis of the performance-storage trade-offs associated with different solutions and showcase results for our study on two large-scale datasets created from climate and combustion simulations.

A method for crystallographic mapping of an alpha-beta titanium alloy with nanometre resolution using scanning precession electron diffraction and open-source software libraries

An approach for the crystallographic mapping of two-phase alloys on the nanoscale using a combination of scanned precession electron diffraction and open-source python libraries is introduced in this paper. This method is demonstrated using the example of a two-phase α/β titanium alloy. The data were recorded using a direct electron detector to collect the patterns, and recently developed algorithms to perform automated indexing and analyse the crystallography from the results. Very high-quality mapping is achieved at a 3 nm step size. The results show the expected Burgers orientation relationships between the α laths and β matrix, as well as the expected misorientations between α laths. A minor issue was found that one area was affected by 180° ambiguities in indexing occur due to this area being aligned too close to a zone axis of the α with twofold projection symmetry (not present in 3D) in the zero-order Laue Zone, and this should be avoided in data acquisition in the future. Nevertheless, this study demonstrates a good workflow for the analysis of nanocrystalline two- or multi-phase materials, which will be of widespread use in analysing two-phase titanium and other systems and how they evolve as a function of thermomechanical treatments.

Libpanda: A High Performance Library for Vehicle Data Collection

Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) generally involve time-critical components due to physical dynamics, therefore necessitating high-performance subsystems. This is also true in data collection scenarios to infer physical phenomena. This paper covers Libpanda as an example of a component that has been designed to address performance issues in CPS implementations. Libpanda is a C++ library that interfaces software with a Comma.ai Panda device. Pandas are used for installation in modern vehicles to read the vehicle CAN bus, providing rich sensor data and limited vehicle control through message injection. The motivation to design lib-panda stems from the lack of performance in Python-based code that runs on inexpensive hardware like a Raspberry Pi. In such situations, Python code would result in utilizing 92% CPU while also dropping around 40% of the CAN packet due to bottlenecks. Without using different tools, inconsistent data collection means a loss of time-based vehicle state interpretation. Libpanda addresses these issues through implementation in a different language and implementation of different design paradigms involving asynchronous calls and multithreading. The Panda also features a GPS module that allows multiple instances to synchronize clocks for large-scale data collection scenarios. Libpanda has been designed with time-synchronization in mind to aid in the measurement of inter-vehicle dynamics. The performance improvements of libpanda have resulted in it becoming an important component in automotive dynamics research that requires a higher technical performance in large-scale experiments.

Assessment of the Phase-to-Ground Fault Apparent Admittance Method with Phase/Ground Boundaries to Detect Types of Electrical Faults for Protective Relays Using Signature Library and Simulated Events

Protective relays in electric power grids recognize the types of electrical faults in a few seconds. The most common detection method to detect the types of electrical faults is based on measuring the angle between the zero and negative sequence currents. However, it is not completely accurate because the phase-to-phase-ground and phase-to-ground electrical faults could have the same detection conditions. Therefore, engineers need to plot the events after an electrical fault to observe the nature of the incidents in detail. In this study, the phase-to-ground fault apparent (PGFA) admittance method with phase/ground boundaries identified the types of electrical faults located in distribution power lines and feeders. This method was based on measuring the PGFA admittance magnitudes for the faulted and nonfaulted phases, resulting in greater than zero and near zero, respectively. The PGFA admittance algorithm was built with MATLAB/Simulink software and tested with signature library and grid simulation events. The PGFA method with phase/ground boundaries was evaluated with the confusion matrix. The measured and predicted values matched in more than 90% of the tests, and the PGFA admittance method with phase/ground boundaries presented an accuracy of 94.3% and a precision of 100%.

FLIT: A Generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates

This Fortran code consists of multiple modules with a focus on simplifying array operations, image processing, and numerical computation especially for computational geophysics applications. We intend to use this code to demonstrate the application and usefulness of Fortran interface and templates for generic programming, especially for computational geophysics and seismology applications. The code has several notable features. Firstly, it is based on a modularized structure, where each module contains multiple functions but with a focus of functionality. Secondly, it heavily uses interfaces and templates for improving the genericness and convenience of the resulting code, where a same function interface can enclose a group of functions that perform the same functionality but with inputs/output variables of different data types. Thirdly, it includes a variety of generic functions with an emphasis on array operations, such as rotation, flipping, cropping, padding, fast Fourier transform, Gaussian blurring, interpolation, and so on. We name this package FLIP – a generic Fortran Library based on Interfaces and Templates.
