The Importance of Ontologies to LANL’s Future Search Capabilities [Slides]

Digitizing physical archives is designed to make documents more accessible. An ontology in this context is a network of discrete concepts (things, people, places, etc.) and, importantly, the relationships that connect them. This will help both the recall and the precision of the search: being able to link to concepts I didn’t type directly into the search box will get more results from a search, while knowing how the concepts are related to each other will make it easier to filter out the stuff that isn’t actually useful. Ontologies make a database more flexible and easier for a user to actually navigate.

Development of a New Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiment at LANL [Slides]

Conclusion: New timing filter amps and power supplies for the PMTs have been procured. The second switcher is built and will be tested with UCN soon. The second simultaneous spin analyzer is being built at Indiana University and will be tested this year. We plan to start taking production data from next year

Be like Oppenheimer: Donate your weapons information for the next generation of LANL researchers

You can follow the Lab’s first physicists, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Richard Feynman, Hans Bethe, and so many others through the years, plus know your information is helping future researchers — just like our first scientists did for you. How? Donate your physical or digital classified weapons records to the Lab’s National Security Research Center (NSRC), said Riz Ali, NSRC Director. The NSRC houses 80 years’ worth of one-of-kind records, which total in the millions and include nearly every medium imaginable. It is the Laboratory’s largest collection of research materials and the largest classified library of any Department of Energy lab. It all started with Oppenheimer, our first Lab director, and his Technical Library that was established during the Manhattan Project, which was the U.S. government’s top-secret effort to create the first atomic bombs to help end World War II. “Few NSRC patrons are aware that most of its vital materials come from the Lab’s own workforce,” said Chris C’de Baca, the NSRC’s Group Leader. “A significant portion of our critical material — which today’s researchers access regularly — is a direct contribution from research scientists. If people don’t contribute, then we won’t have the information we need when people come to the NSRC for research.”

Execute BEE workflows on private cloud infrastructure-2.3.6.01 - LANL ATDM ST / STNS01-22 Milestone Completion Documentation (BEE-FY21 P6-2) [Slides]

This work involves the creation of the Cloud Launcher, a new subcomponent of BEE, and the extension of the BEETaskManager to run on Cloud systems. BEE will be able to interact with the Google Compute Engine and OpenStack cloud APIs to set up simple Cloud clusters for launching HPC job scripts. BEE will use existing functionality to launch jobs that previously could only be launched on HPC systems. The BEETaskManager will handle launching tasks on the Cloud cluster.

LANL-UW Collaboration on LC-QTOF Datasets (Annual Report)

Prior to the application of non-targeted chemometric techniques (i.e., Fisher ratio analysis), pre-processing steps must be carried out on the data collected using liquid chromatography-quadrupole time of flight (LC-QTOF) mass spectrometry. Data compression is the most important pre-processing step due to the vast number of high-resolution mass channels (m/z; 0.0001 Da) collected. Our first approach was to bin the mass spectral dimension to 0.01 Da; however, this approach was computationally expensive and did not preserve the high-resolution data.

Niowave Ancillary Systems – FY21: In Partial Fulfillment of the Deliverable Requirement for Niowave Ancillary Systems Support by LANL

Niowave Inc. produces medical radioisotopes within the US. Lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) is irradiated using an electron beam to produce neutrons that are used in the production of Molybdenum-99 (Mo-99). The medical community relies on a steady supply of Mo-99 which is primarily used in medical diagnostic imaging. The irradiation of LBE results in high temperatures within the molten metal, this work focusses on the design of ancillary systems associated with the liquid metal system. The LBE is initially at a temperature of 200°C and flows over a steel plate to create a waterfall. The electron beam is then aimed at the waterfall to generate neutrons. The peak temperatures of the LBE post irradiation depend on the beam energy of the LINAC. For a 15 MeV and 20 kW beam, the temperatures can range between 300°C and 350°C. The LBE is cycled through the system to create a closed loop that requires the post-irradiation LBE to be cooled back to 200°C. This work focuses on the heat exchanger and condenser system responsible for the cooling of the post-irradiation LBE.
