Air cooled turbine blades activated diffusion brazing and gas pressure welding, using composite finned configuration model
Continuity and smoothness properties of piecewise optimal control at junction between singular and nonsingular subarcs, developing necessary conditions
Superior mechanical properties were obtained in metal joints weld-brazed between faying surfaces. Weld-braze applications and advantages are listed.
Bi-composite joint serves as interface between two dissimilar materials by interleaving plies of one composite with plies of another. This interleaving forms transition area between composites. Voids are filled in with epoxy resin to form strong, smooth transition between two materials.
Silver sheet is wrapped around aluminum portion of joint. Mylar powder box is wrapped over silver sheet. Explosion welds silver to aluminum. Stainless-steel tube is placed over silver-aluminum interface. Mylar powder box, covered with Mylar tape, is wrapped around steel member. Explosion welds steel to silver-aluminum interface.
High quality resistance spot welds were produced by welding through epoxy adhesive on titanium alloys. Weldbond joints were consistently stronger than those of either mechanical fasteners, structural adhesive bonds, or mechanical fasteners with adhesive at the joint interface. Weldbond joints and/or spot weld joints showed superior strength at all temperature ranges as compared to other joints tested.
The development and characteristics of a system for automatic transmission of meteorological data to U.S.S.R. weather stations are discussed. An algorithm to be used with computer storage facilities to avoid duplication of data is examined. A specific method for providing automated data transmission and reception is explained.
Combined brazing and diffusion bonding process for aluminum and stainless steel saves time and simplifies processing. Test show that resulting bond can withstand internal pressures up to 1,000 psi.
Uniform wall thickness and uninterrupted heat transfer is achieved by using shaped metal insert as wall material for joint. Insert acts as support during brazing, after which excess material is ground away to bring joint to original tubing size.
Hafnium carbide was shown to be virtually inert when in contact with silicon carbide and Waspaloy for at least 200 hr at 1093 C (2000 F). Extensive interaction was noted with other superalloys such as HA-188. A continuous CVD HfC deposition process was developed for deposition of up to 8 microns on .14 mm (.0056 in.) SiC tungsten core filament at rates as high as .6 m/min. The rate can be increased by increasing the length of the reactor and the output of the power supply used in resistive heating of the filament substrate. The strength of HfC coated filament varies with thickness in a Griffith-like manner. This strength reduction was greater for HfC coatings than for tungsten coatings, presumably because of the greater ductility of tungsten.
NASA made a major stride in readying a second delivery vehicle for its Space Transportation System (STS) fleet with the perfect landing of Shuttle Orbiter Challenger at Edwards Air Force Base, California, April 9, 1983. Besides being the first flight test of Challenger's performance, the mission marked the orbiting of the first spacecraft in NASA's new Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). The new family of orbiting space communications platforms is essential to serve future Shuttle missions. Although the Inertial Upper Stage (IUS) second stage engine firing failed to place TDRS in its final 35,888 kilometer (22,300 mile) geosynchronous orbit, its release from the orbiter cargo bay went as planned. Launch officials were confident they can achieve its planned orbit in a matter of weeks.
The molecule r(GCG)d(TATACGC) is self-complementary and forms two DNA-RNA hybrid segments surrounding a central region of double helical DNA; its molecular structure has been solved by X-ray analysis. All three parts of the molecule adopt a conformation which is close to that seen in the 11-fold RNA double helix. The conformation of the ribonucleotides is partly determined by water molecules bridging between the ribose O2' hydroxyl group and cytosine O2. The hybrid-DNA duplex junction contains no structural discontinuities. However, the central DNA TATA sequence has some structural irregularities.
Results are presented of a study of some unusual density relations between olivine and coexisting liquid in the system fosterite-fayalite. At 1 atmosphere pressure it is found that olivine floats on its coexisting liquid for intermediate compositions on this binary because of extreme partitioning of Fe into the melt phase. At 20 kilobars, the usual behavior of olivine settling is found to occur because the partitioning of Fe in the melt is reduced, aided possibly by the dissolution of CO2 in the melt from the use of a graphite container. It is determined that olivine flotation and settling are rapid in a time period of only a few hours because viscosities are slightly greater than that of paraffin oil at room temperature. Some adcumulate textures with good triple junction grain boundaries are found to be developed. Observations of differentiated magmatic systems suggest that the mechanisms by which magmas can differentiate vary considerably in the ultramafic to tholeiitic compositional range.
An assembly of ceramic surfaces particularly refractory metal oxides and carbides, abutting a thin sheet of metal susceptor material are placed in a chamber of an enclosure containing inert gas. An RF coil is activated by power supply to melt the susceptor and adjacent zones of the ceramic. Reactive gas such as oxygen or a carbonizing gas is then fed to the chamber and reacts with the susceptor to form compounds which disperse and dissolve in the zones. On cooling, a strong joint is formed. The susceptor may contain inner perforations and outer perforations to aid in distribution of heat.

The NASA history of international cooperation is briefly reviewed. The evolving nature of the international space environment is discussed. The proposed international Space Station is described as an example of the continuing cooperative spirit and of the need to adapt to changed circumstances as they arise.
A comprehensive parametric study was carried out to establish design guidelines for favorable tradeoffs between damping benefits and the associated stiffness, strength and weight penalties in a rhombic joint. The results are compared with the corresponding tradeoffs for a double-lap joint made of the same materials.
