Contribution of intermediate luminosity X-ray galaxies to the background - Anon 0945-30

Evidence that the galaxy A0945-30 is a new extragalactic X-ray source was found from an analysis of rotating modulation collimator quick-look data collected from the SAS 3 X-ray observatory. A strong piece of evidence was the hydrogen column density of 3 plus or minus 1 times 10 to the 22nd power per sq cm for a power law spectrum extending to about 35 keV inferred from HEAO 1 data. Observations indicate that the galaxy is an early type spiral with a bright nucleus. A faint star alongside the galaxy within the 90% confidence X-ray source error circle is an F dwarf with no indication of emission features. Spectra of the galaxy in the red and blue show sharp, intermediate strength emission lines of forbidden O III, forbidden N II, and H-alpha together with strong Mg, Fe, Ca absorption features characteristic of a normal stellar continuum in the galactic nucleus.

Two-potential approach for electron-molecular collisions at intermediate and high energies - Application to e-N2 scatterings

A general theoretical approach is proposed for the calculation of elastic, vibrational, and rotational transitions for electron-molecule scattering at intermediate and high-electron-impact energies. In this formulation, contributions to the scattering process come from the incoherent sum of two dominant potentials: a short-range shielded nuclear Coulomb potential from individual atomic centers, and a permanent/induced long-range potential. Application to e-N2 scattering from 50-500 eV incident electron energies has yielded good agreement with absolutely calibrated experiments. Comparisons with other theoretical approaches are made. The physical picture as well as the general features of electron-molecule scattering process are discussed within the framework of the two-potential approach.

Far ultraviolet photometry of intermediate brightness stars from Apollo-Soyuz

We present photoelectric photometry in the 1350-1600 A band of 52 stars of intermediate brightness, using data obtained in 1975 July with a grazing incidence telescope aboard the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Upper or lower limits on the brightness of 106 additional objects which were spatially blended with one or more companions were also obtained. The data sample consists of stars with V not greater than 7.5 and spectral types from O6 through A5. When corrected for interstellar extinction, the ultraviolet photometry on a two-color diagram agrees very well with the predictions of the revised blanketed model atmospheres by Kurucz. Attention is also drawn to an anomalously UV-bright object which is probably associated with HD 100493.

Relativistic K-LL Auger spectra in the intermediate-coupling scheme with configuration interaction

Theoretical K-LL Auger spectra from relativistic Dirac-Hartree-Slater calculations in intermediate coupling with configuration interaction (ICWCI) are considered. Calculated transition rates for 25 elements with Z between 18 and 96, inclusive, are listed and compare well with experimental data. Relativistic effects are found to be important above Z equal to about 35, and ICWCI is necessary to describe the spectra for Z less than about 60.

Diphosphine is an intermediate in the photolysis of phosphine to phosphorus and hydrogen

The photolysis of phosphine to red phosphorus (P4) and hydrogen is investigated in light of the potential significance of the reaction in the atmospheric chemistry of Jupiter. It is reported that the photolysis of PH3 at room temperature by a 206.2-nm light source gave rise to a product identified by its UV and IR spectra and gas chromatographic retention time as P2H4, the yield of which is found to increase to a maximum and then decrease to 20% of the maximum value with illumination time. A mechanism for phosphine photolysis including diphosphine formation as an intermediate step is proposed, and it is concluded that P2H4 is a likely constituent of the atmospheres of the Jovian planets.

Excitation of the b 3 Sigma u + state of H2 by electron impact - Semiclassical exchange potentials at intermediate energies

Integrated and differential cross sections for the excitation of the b 3 Sigma u + state of H2, from the ground state, by electron impact, are presented. The energy range of interest is 10.5 to 40.0 eV. The close-coupling equations for this process are solved in five different exchange approximations: exact two-electron exchange terms, no orthogonality; exact two-electron exchange terms, orthogonality; semiclassical exchange terms, no orthogonality, with barrier term; semiclassical exchange terms, no orthogonality, no barrier term; and semiclassical exchange terms, orthogonality, with barrier term. The purpose is to judge the reliability of the semiclassical exchange approximation for electronic excitation of molecules by electron impact at intermediate energies. The results are compared with recent theoretical estimates for the same process.

MHD oxidant intermediate temperature ceramic heater study

The use of three types of directly fired ceramic heaters for preheating oxygen enriched air to an intermediate temperature of 1144K was investigated. The three types of ceramic heaters are: (1) a fixed bed, periodic flow ceramic brick regenerative heater; (2) a ceramic pebble regenerative heater. The heater design, performance and operating characteristics under conditions in which the particulate matter is not solidified are evaluated. A comparison and overall evaluation of the three types of ceramic heaters and temperature range determination at which the particulate matter in the MHD exhaust gas is estimated to be a dry powder are presented.

Effect of rotor configuration on guyed tower and foundation designs and estimated costs for intermediate site horizontal axis wind turbines

Three designs of a guyed cylindrical tower and its foundation for an intermediate size horizontal axis wind turbine generator are discussed. The primary difference in the three designs is the configuration of the rotor. Two configurations are two-blade rotors with teetering hubs - one with full span pitchable blades, the other with fixed pitch blades. The third configuration is a three-bladed rotor with a rigid hub and fixed pitch blades. In all configurations the diameter of the rotor is 38 meters and the axis of rotation is 30.4 meters above grade, and the power output is 200 kW and 400 kW. For each configuration the design is based upon for the most severe loading condition either operating wind or hurricane conditions. The diameter of the tower is selected to be 1.5 meters (since it was determined that this would provide sufficient space for access ladders within the tower) with guy rods attached at 10.7 meters above grade. Completing a design requires selecting the required thicknesses of the various cylindrical segments, the number and diameter of the guy rods, the number and size of soil anchors, and the size of the central foundation. The lower natural frequencies of vibration are determined for each design to ensure that operation near resonance does not occur. Finally, a cost estimate is prepared for each design. A preliminary design and cost estimate of a cantilever tower (cylindrical and not guyed) and its foundation is also presented for each of the three configurations.

Bubble shapes in steady axisymmetric flows at intermediate Reynolds number

The shape of a gas bubble which rises through a quiescent incompressible, Newtonian fluid at intermediate Reynolds numbers is considered. Exact numerical solutions for the velocity and pressure fields, as well as the bubble shape, are obtained using finite difference techniques and a numerically generated transformation to an orthogonal, boundary-fitted coordinate system. No restriction is placed on the allowable magnitude of deformation.

Vibration analysis of three guyed tower designs for intermediate size wind turbines

Three guyed tower designs were analyzed for intermediate size wind turbines. The four lowest natural frequencies of vibration of the three towers concepts were estimated. A parametric study was performed on each tower to determine the effect of varying such tower properties as the inertia and stiffness of the tower and guys, the inertia values of the nacelle and rotor, and the rotational speed of the rotor. Only the two lowest frequencies were in a range where they could be excited by the rotor blade passing frequencies. There two frequencies could be tuned by varying the guy stiffness, the guy attachment point on the tower, the tower and mass stiffness, and the nacelle/rotor/power train masses.

The spectra of two new intermediate helium stars

The stars designated as LSS 2394 and LS II + 36 deg 37 in the Case-Hamburg Luminous Stars surveys are found to be intermediate helium stars. The environment and spectrum of LSS 2394 (CPD -62 2124) appear to be quite similar to those of Sigma Ori E in a number of respects, including close proximity to two other OB stars, membership in a rich O association, spectrum variability, rapid rotation, and broad H-alpha emission wings. A low-resolution IUE spectrum for this star is presented and discussed.

The role of electrostatic charging of small and intermediate sized bodies in the solar system

The role of electrostatic charging of small and intermediate sized bodies in the solar system is reviewed. These bodies include planetary, interplanetary and cometary dust as well as cometary nuclei (at large heliocentric distances), asteroids and the larger bodies in the Saturnian ring system. While this charging has both physical and dynamical consequences for the small dust grains, it has only physical consequences for the larger bodies. The main physical consequences for the small grains are electrostatic erosion ('chipping') and disruption, whereas for the larger bodies they include electrostatic levitation and blow-off of fine loose dust from their surfaces.

High density Schottky barrier IRCCD sensors for SWIR applications at intermediate temperature

Monolithic 32 x 64 and 64 x 1:128 palladium silicide (Pd2Si) interline transfer infrared charge coupled devices (IRCCDs) sensitive in the 1 to 3.5 micron spectral band were developed. This silicon imager exhibits a low response nonuniformity of typically 0.2 to 1.6% rms, and was operated in the temperature range between 40 to 140 K. Spectral response measurements of test Pd2Si p-type Si devices yield quantum efficiencies of 7.9% at 1.25 microns, 5.6% at 1.65 microns 2.2% at 2.22 microns. Improvement in quantum efficiency is expected by optimizing the different structural parameters of the Pd2Si detectors. The spectral response of the Pd2Si detectors fit a modified Fowler emission model. The measured photo-electric barrier height for the Pd2Si detectors is 0.34 eV and the measured quantum efficiency coefficient, C1, is 19%/eV. The dark current level of Pd2Si Schottky barrier focal plane arrays (FPAs) is sufficiently low to enable operation at intermediate temperatures at TV frame rates. Typical dark current level measured at 120 K on the FPA is 2 nA/sq cm. The operating temperature of the Pd2Si FPA is compatible with passive cooler performance. In addition, high density Pd2Si Schottky barrier FPAs are manufactured with high yield and therefore represent an economical approach to short wavelength IR imaging. A Pd2Si Schottky barrier image sensor for push-broom multispectral imaging in the 1.25, 1.65, and 2.22 micron bands is being studied. The sensor will have two line arrays (dual band capability) of 512 detectors each, with 30 micron center-to-center detector spacing. The device will be suitable for chip-to-chip abutment, thus providing the capability to produce large, multiple chip focal planes with contiguous, in-line sensors.

The need for an intermediate mass scale in GUTs

The minimal SU(5) grand unified field theory (GUT) model fails to resolve the strong charge parity (CP) problem, suffers from the cosmological monopole problem, sheds no light on the nature of the 'dark' mass in the universe, and predicts an unacceptably low value for the baryon asymmetry. All these problems can be overcome in suitable grand unified axion models with an intermediate mass scale of about 10 to the 11th power to 10 to the 12th power GeV. An example based on the gauge group SO(10) is presented. Among other things, it predicts that the axions comprise the 'dark' mass in the universe, and that there exists a galactic monopole flux of 10 to the -8th power to 10 to the -7th power/sq cm/yr. Other topics that are briefly discussed include proton decay, family symmetry, neutrino masses and the gauge hierarchy problem.

A new intermediate Seyfert galaxy - X-ray, optical, and radio properties

It is shown that the X-ray source X0459 + 034 is a Seyfert galaxy of intermediate type, and optical spectroscopy and radio observations were performed to study the nature of the object. The object appears almost stellar and slightly diffuse on Palomar Sky Survey prints. The source is identified as a Type 1.5 Seyfert with broad and narrow line components of redshift 0.016 + or - 0.001, according to H-Beta line profile. In addition, the broad line component H-Beta equivalent width is larger than that of the narrow line component by a factor of three. Finally, it is shown that this is a weak radio source with a steep nonthermal spectrum and an angular extent of approximately 3 in., and the composite radio-to-X-ray spectrum suggests that in different spectral regions, different relativistic electron populations or emission mechanisms are contributing factors.

Line broadening in multiphoton processes with a resonant intermediate transition

It is found that the line width of the excitation spectrum for multiphoton ionization is broadened much more severely than the cascade fluorescence originating from the resonant intermediate level. These results derive from the mutual effects of the ionizing and resonating transitions, which are not properly accounted for in perturbative treatments. In general, the ionization line shape can be expressed as the sum of two Lorentzian components, each with different degrees of broadening. This line shape reduces to that of the resonating transition in the limit of vanishing intensities. Moreover, the fluorescence line shape may also exhibit a second component whose amplitude may become important under certain conditions.
