Spectral characterization of biophysical characteristics in a boreal forest: Relationship between Thematic Mapper band reflectance and leaf area index for Aspen

Results from analysis of a data set of simultaneous measurements of Thematic Mapper band reflectance and leaf area index are presented. The measurements were made over pure stands of Aspen in the Superior National Forest of northern Minnesota. The analysis indicates that the reflectance may be sensitive to the leaf area index of the Aspen early in the season. The sensitivity disappears as the season progresses. Based on the results of model calculations, an explanation for the observed relationship is developed. The model calculations indicate that the sensitivity of the reflectance to the Aspen overstory depends on the amount of understory present.

Performance of a quantitative jet stream turbulence forecasting technique - The Specific CAT Risk (SCATR) index

The SCATR index is showing considerable promise as a tool for operational, nonconvective, high altitude turbulence forecasting. The results of nine case studies are summarized. Attention is then focused on one of these cases for which the data base is most complete. In light of these case studies, the strengths and weaknesses of the current formulation and suggested improvements are discussed. The SCATR index has applications both as a diagnostic tool and in operational forecasting.

An update on the correlation between the cosmic radiation intensity and the geomagnetic AA index

A statistical study between the cosmic ray intensity, as observed by a neutron monitor, and of the geomagnetic aa index, as representative of perturbations in the plasma and interplanetary magnetic field in the heliosphere, has been updated to specifically exclude time periods around the reversal of the solar magnetic field. The results of this study show a strong negative correlation for the period 1960 through 1968 with a correlation coefficient of approximately -0.86. However, there is essentially no correlation between the cosmic ray intensity and the aa index for the period 1972-1979 (i.e. correlation coefficient less than 0.16). These results would appear to support the theory of preferential particle propagation into the heliosphere vis the ecliptic during the period 1960-1968 and via the solar polar regions during 1972-1979.

Remote sensing of the leaf area index of temperate coniferous forests

To estimate the one-sided leaf area index (LAI) of temperate coniferous forests using data acquired from the Daedalus Airborne Thematic Mapper, an empirical model is developed. The study area follows an environmental gradient across west-central Oregon, where leaf development varies in response to temperature and moisture. The relationship between the ratio of thematic-mapper simulator channels four and three and the leaf area index for selected closed canopy or fully stocked forest stands along the gradient is analyzed. Results show that a good relationship exists between the LAI and the IR/red ratio for conifers and that a conifer species-independent asymptotic relationship is observed between LAI and near IR/red reflectance, with near radiometric saturation occurring at an LAI of about 7-8.

USSR Space Life Sciences Digest. Index to issues 1-4

This document is an index to issues 1 to 4 of the USSR Space Life Sciences Digest and is arranged in three sections. In section 1, abstracts from the first four issues are grouped according to subject; please note the four letter codes in the upper right hand corner of the pages. Section 2 lists the categories according to which digest entries are grouped and cites additional entries relevant to that category by four letter code and entry number in section 1. Refer to section 1 for titles and other pertinent information. Key words are indexed in section 3.

Correlations between Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer data and an antecedent precipitation index

Passive microwave brightness temperatures from the Nimbus-7 Scanning Multichannel Microwave Radiometer (SMMR) can be used to infer the soil moisture content over agricultural areas such as the southern Great Plains of the United States. A linear regression analysis between three transforms of the five dual polarized SMMR wavelengths of 0.81, 1.36, 1.66, 2.80 and 4.54 cm and an antecedent precipitation index representing the precipitation history showed correlation coefficients greater than 0.90 for pixel aggregates of 25-50 km. The use of surface air temperatures to approximate the temperature of the emitting layer was not required to obtain high correlation coefficients between the transforms and the antecedent precipitation index.

Variation of refractive index in strained In(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs heterostructures

In(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs heterostructures and strained-layer superlattices can be used as optical waveguides. For such applications it is important to know explicitly the refractive index variation with mismatch strain and with alloying in the ternary layer. Starting from the Kramers-Kronig integral dispersion relations, a model has been developed from which the refractive index change in the ternary layer of In(x)Ga(1-x)As-GaAs heterojunctions can be calculated. The results are presented and discussed. The expected changes in a superlattice have been qualitatively predicted.

USSR Space Life Sciences Digest. Index to issues 5-9

An index to issues 5 through 9 of the USSR Space Life Sciences Digest is provided in two sections. The first section lists bibliographic citations of abstracts contained in the Digest issues covered, grouped by topic area categories. Cross references to other relevant abstracts in different categories are also provided. The second section provides a key word index for the same set of abstracts.
