Dilepton Program with Time-of-Flight Detector at the STAR Experiment

Pairs of lepton and antilepton (dilepton) in a continuous mass range are one of the most experimentally challenging and golden probes of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) produced in heavy ion collisions because they do not strongly interact with the hot and dense medium, and reflect the properties of the medium at the time the dilepton is generated. The measurements of dileptons require lepton identification with high purity and high efficiency at large detector acceptance. STAR is one of two large experiments at the relativistic heavy ion collider with a primary goal of searching for the QGP and studying its properties. The STAR experiment launched a comprehensive dielectron (e + e - ) program enabled by the time-of-flight (TOF) detector that had been fully installed in 2010. In this article, we review the decade-long R&D, the construction and performance of the STAR TOF detector, and dielectron measurements, including thermal dielectron production and dielectron production from the Breit–Wheeler process. Future perspectives are also discussed.

Interplay of femtoscopic and charge-balance correlations

Correlations driven by the constraints of local charge conservation have been shown to provide insight into the chemical evolution and diffusivity of the high-temperature matter created in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. Two-particle correlations driven by final-state interactions have allowed the extraction of critical femtoscopic space-time information about the expansion and dissolution of the same collisions. Whereas correlations from final-state interactions mainly appear at small relative momenta, a few tens of MeV/c, charge-balance correlations extend over a range of hundreds of MeV/c. In nearly all previous analyses, this separation of scales is used to focus solely on one class or the other. So the purpose of this study is to quantitatively understand the degree to which correlations from final-state interactions distort the interpretation of charge-balance correlations and vice versa.

Hard jet substructure in a multistage approach

We present predictions and postdictions for a wide variety of hard jet-substructure observables using a multistage model within the framework. The details of the multistage model and the various parameter choices are described in []. A novel feature of this model is the presence of two stages of jet modification: a high-virtuality phase [modeled using the modular all twist transverse-scattering elastic-drag and radiation model ()], where modified coherence effects diminish medium-induced radiation, and a lower virtuality phase [modeled using the linear Boltzmann transport model ()], where parton splits are fully resolved by the medium as they endure multiple scattering induced energy loss. Energy-loss calculations are carried out on event-by-event viscous fluid dynamic backgrounds constrained by experimental data. The uniform and consistent descriptions of multiple experimental observables demonstrate the essential role of modified coherence effects and the multistage modeling of jet evolution. Using the best choice of parameters from [], and with no further tuning, we present calculations for the medium modified jet fragmentation function, the groomed jet momentum fraction z g and angular separation r g distributions, as well as the nuclear modification factor of groomed jets. These calculations provide accurate descriptions of published data from experiments at the Large Hadron Collider. Furthermore, we provide predictions from the multistage model for future measurements at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Collision-energy dependence of the Breit-Wheeler process in heavy-ion collisions and its application to nuclear charge radius measurements

The collision energy dependence of the cross section and the transverse momentum distribution of dielectrons from the Breit-Wheeler process in heavy-ion collisions are computed in the lowest-order QED and found to be sensitive to the nuclear charge distribution and the infrared divergence of the ultra-Lorentz-boosted Coulomb field. Within a given experimental kinematic acceptance, the cross section is found to increase while the pair transverse momentum ($\sqrt{\langle{p^2_T}\rangle}$) decreases with increasing beam energy. We demonstrate that the transverse-momentum component of Weizsäcker-Williams photons is due to the finite extent of the charge source and electric field component in the longitudinal direction. We further clarify the connection between the nuclear charge distribution and the kinematics of produced e + e - from the Breit-Wheeler process, and propose a criterion for the validity of the Breit-Wheeler process in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Following this approach we demonstrate that the experimental measurements of the Breit-Wheeler process in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions can be used to quantitatively constrain the nuclear charge radius. The extracted parameters show sensitivity to the impact parameter dependence, and can be used to study the initial-state and final-state effects in hadronic interactions.

Bulk viscosity and cavitation in heavy ion collisions

Relativistic heavy ion collisions generate nuclear-sized droplets of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) that exhibit nearly inviscid hydrodynamic expansion. Smaller collision systems such as p + Au, d + Au, and 3 He + Au at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, as well as p + Pb and high-multiplicity p + p at the Large Hadron Collider may create even smaller droplets of QGP. If so, the standard time evolution paradigm of heavy ion collisions may be extended to these smaller systems. These small systems present a unique opportunity to examine pre-hydrodynamic physics and extract properties of the QGP, such as the bulk viscosity, where the short lifetimes of the small droplets makes them more sensitive to these contributions. Here we focus on the influence of bulk viscosity, its temperature dependence, and cavitation effects on the dynamics in small and large systems using the publicly available hydrodynamic codes SONIC and MUSIC. In conclusion, we also compare pre-hydrodynamic physics in different frameworks including AdS/CFT strong coupling, IP-GLASMA weak coupling, and free streaming or no coupling.

Search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos in the decay of top quarks produced in proton-proton collisions at s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy right-handed Majorana neutrinos is performed with the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, using the 140 fb -1 of proton–proton collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ =13 TeV collected during Run 2. This search targets $t\overline{t}$ production, in which both top quarks decay into a bottom quark and a W boson, where one of the W bosons decays hadronically and the other decays into an electron or muon and a heavy neutral lepton. The heavy neutral lepton is identified through a decay into an electron or muon and another W boson, resulting in a pair of same-charge same-flavor leptons in the final state. This paper presents the first search for heavy neutral leptons in the mass range of 15–75 GeV using $t\overline{t}$ events. No significant excess is observed over the background expectation, and upper limits are placed on the signal cross sections. Assuming a benchmark scenario of the phenomenological type-I seesaw model, these cross section limits are then translated into upper limits on the mixing parameters of the heavy Majorana neutrino with Standard Model neutrinos.

Measurement of the non-prompt D-meson fraction as a function of multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The fractions of non-prompt (i.e. originating from beauty-hadron decays) D 0 and D + mesons with respect to the inclusive yield are measured as a function of the charged-particle multiplicity in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The results are reported in intervals of transverse momentum (pT) and integrated in the range 1 < p T < 24 GeV/c. The fraction of non-prompt D 0 and D + mesons is found to increase slightly as a function of p T in all the measured multiplicity intervals, while no significant dependence on the charged-particle multiplicity is observed. In order to investigate the production and hadronisation mechanisms of charm and beauty quarks, the results are compared to PYTHIA 8 as well as EPOS 3 and EPOS 4 Monte Carlo simulations, and to calculations based on the colour glass condensate including three-pomeron fusion.

Measurement of beauty-quark production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV via non-prompt D mesons

The p T -diferential production cross sections of non-prompt D 0 , D + , and D$^+_s$ at a centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The measurements are performed at midrapidity, |y| < 0.5, with the data sample collected by ALICE from 2016 to 2018. The results are in agreement with predictions from several perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of beauty quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, $f_s$/($f_u$ +$f_d$), is found to be 0.114 ± 0.016 (stat.) ± 0.006 (syst.) ± 0.003 (BR) ± 0.003 (extrap.). This value is compatible with previous measurements at lower centre-of-mass energies and in diferent collision systems in agreement with the assumption of universality of fragmentation functions. In addition, the dependence of the non-prompt D meson production on the centre of-mass energy is investigated by comparing the results obtained at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV, showing a hardening of the non-prompt D-meson p T -diferential production cross section at higher $\sqrt{s}$. Finally, the $b\overline{b}$ production cross section per unit of rapidity at midrapidity is calculated from the non-prompt D 0 , D + , D$^+_s$, and $Λ^+_c$ hadron measurements, obtaining dσ/dy = 75.2 ± 3.2 (stat.) ± 5.2 (syst.)$^{+12.3}_{-3.2}$ (extrap.) µb.

Probing the chiral magnetic wave with charge-dependent flow measurements in Pb-Pb collisions at the LHC

The Chiral Magnetic Wave (CMW) phenomenon is essential to provide insights into the strong interaction in QCD, the properties of the quark-gluon plasma, and the topological characteristics of the early universe, offering a deeper understanding of fundamental physics in high-energy collisions. Measurements of the charge-dependent anisotropic flow coefficients are studied in Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon-nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}}$ = 5.02 TeV to probe the CMW. In particular, the slope of the normalized difference in elliptic (v 2 ) and triangular (v 3 ) flow coefficients of positively and negatively charged particles as a function of their event-wise normalized number difference, is reported for inclusive and identified particles. The slope ${r}_3^{\textrm{Norm}}$ is found to be larger than zero and to have a magnitude similar to ${r}_2^{\textrm{Norm}}$, thus pointing to a large background contribution for these measurements. Furthermore, ${r}_2^{\textrm{Norm}}$ can be described by a blast wave model calculation that incorporates local charge conservation. In addition, using the event shape engineering technique yields a fraction of CMW (f CMW ) contribution to this measurement which is compatible with zero. This measurement provides the very first upper limit for f CMW , and in the 10–60% centrality interval it is found to be 26% (38%) at 95% (99.7%) confidence level.

Constraints on light dark sector particles from lifetime difference of heavy neutral mesons

Heavy meson decays with missing energy in the final state offer interesting avenues to search for light invisible new physics such as dark matter (DM). In this context, we show that such new physics (NP) interactions also affect lifetime difference in neutral meson-antimeson mixing. We consider general dimension-six effective quark interactions involving a pair of DM particles and calculate their contributions to lifetime difference in beauty and charm meson systems. We use the latest data on mixing observables to constrain the relevant effective operators. We find that lifetime differences provide novel and complementary flavor constraints compared to those obtained from heavy meson decays. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for Nuclear Modifications of 𝐵 + Meson Production in 𝑝-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV

Nuclear medium effects on 𝐵 + meson production are studied using the binary-collision scaled cross section ratio between events of different charged-particle multiplicities from proton-lead collisions. Data, collected by the CMS experiment in 2016 at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{𝑠_{NN}}$ = 8.16 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 175 nb −1 , were used. The scaling factors in the ratio are determined using a novel approach based on the 𝑍 → 𝜇 − ⁢𝜇 + cross sections measured in the same events. The scaled ratio for 𝐵 + is consistent with unity for all event multiplicities, putting stringent constraints on nuclear modification for heavy flavor.

Probing Gluon Fluctuations in Nuclei with the First Energy-Dependent Measurement of Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 Photoproduction in Ultraperipheral PbPb Collisions

Incoherent 𝐽/𝜓 photoproduction in heavy ion ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) provides a sensitive probe of localized, fluctuating gluonic structures within heavy nuclei. This Letter reports the first measurement of the photon-nucleon center-of-mass energy (𝑊 𝛾⁢N ) dependence of this process in PbPb UPCs at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV, using 1.52 nb −1 of data recorded by the CMS experiment. The measurement covers a wide 𝑊 𝛾⁢N range of ≈40–400 GeV, probing gluons carrying a fraction 𝑥 of nucleon momentum down to an unexplored regime of 6.5 ×10 −5 . Compared to baseline predictions neglecting nuclear effects, the measured cross sections exhibit significantly greater suppression at lower 𝑥. Additionally, the ratio of incoherent to coherent photoproduction is found to be constant across the probed 𝑊 𝛾⁢N and 𝑥 range, disfavoring the establishment of the black disk limit. This Letter provides critical insights into the 𝑥-dependent evolution of fluctuating gluonic structures within nuclei and calls for further advancements in theoretical models incorporating nuclear shadowing and gluon saturation.

Measurement of the production of charm jets tagged with D0 mesons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 and 13 TeV

The measurement of the production of charm jets, identified by the presence of a D 0 meson in the jet constituents, is presented in proton–proton collisions at centre-of-mass energies of $\sqrt{s}$= 5.02 and 13 TeV with the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC. The D 0 mesons were reconstructed from their hadronic decay D 0 → K – π + and the respective charge conjugate. Jets were reconstructed from D 0 -meson candidates and charged particles using the anti-k T algorithm, in the jet transverse momentum range 5 < p T,chjet < 50 GeV/c, pseudorapidity |η jet | < 0.9 – R, and with the jet resolution parameters R = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6. The distribution of the jet momentum fraction carried by a D 0 meson along the jet axis $\left({z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}\right)$ was measured in the range 0.4 < ${z}_{\Big\Vert}^{\textrm{ch}}$ < 1.0 in four ranges of the jet transverse momentum. Comparisons of results for different collision energies and jet resolution parameters are also presented. The measurements are compared to predictions from Monte Carlo event generators based on leading-order and next-to-leading-order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations. A generally good description of the main features of the data is obtained in spite of a few discrepancies at low p T,chjet . Measurements were also done for R = 0.3 at $\sqrt{s}$= 5.02 and are shown along with their comparisons to theoretical predictions in an appendix to this paper.

Transverse momentum distributions of heavy hadrons and polarized heavy quarks

We initiate the study of transverse momentum-dependent (TMD) fragmentation functions for heavy quarks, demonstrate their factorization in terms of novel nonperturbative matrix elements in heavy-quark effective theory (HQET), and prove new TMD sum rules that arise from heavy-quark spin symmetry. We discuss the phenomenology of heavy-quark TMD FFs at B factories and find that the Collins effect, in contrast to claims in the literature, is not parametrically suppressed by the heavy-quark mass. We further calculate all TMD parton distribution functions for the production of heavy quarks from polarized gluons within the nucleon and use our results to demonstrate the potential of the future EIC to resolve TMD heavy-quark fragmentation in semi-inclusive DIS, complementing the planned EIC program to use heavy quarks as probes of gluon distributions.

Particlization in fluid dynamical simulations of heavy-ion collisions: The IS3D module

The IS3D particlization module simulates the emission of hadrons from heavy-ion collisions via Monte-Carlo sampling of the Cooper–Frye formula which converts fluid dynamical information into local phase-space distributions for hadrons. The code package includes multiple choices for the non-equilibrium correction to these distribution functions: the 14-moment approximation, first-order Chapman–Enskog expansion, and two types of modified equilibrium distributions. This makes it possible to explore to what extent heavy-ion experimental data are sensitive to different choices for δf n , presently the main source of theoretical uncertainty in the particlization stage. Here, we validate our particle sampler with a high degree of precision by generating several million hadron emission events from a longitudinally boost-invariant hypersurface and comparing the event-averaged particle spectra and space–time distributions to the Cooper–Frye formula.
