Measurements of jet quenching using semi-inclusive hadron+jet distributions in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and central Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The ALICE Collaboration reports measurements of the semi-inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from a high transverse momentum (high pT) charged hadron, in pp and central Pb-Pb collisions at center-of-mass energy per nucleon–nucleon collision $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The large uncorrelated background in central Pb-Pb collisions is corrected using a data-driven statistical approach which enables precise measurement of recoil jet distributions over a broad range in p T,ch jet and jet resolution parameter R. Recoil jet yields are reported for R = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.5 in the range 7 < p T,ch jet < 140 GeV/c and π/2 < φ < π, where φ is the azimuthal angular separation between hadron trigger and recoil jet. The low-p T,ch jet reach of the measurement explores unique phase space for studying jet quenching, the interaction of jets with the quark–gluon plasma generated in high-energy nuclear collisions. Comparison of p T,ch jet distributions from pp and central Pb-Pb collisions probes medium-induced jet energy loss and intra-jet broadening, while comparison of their acopla narity distributions explores in-medium jet scattering and medium response. The measurements are compared to theoretical calculations incorporating jet quenching.

Sensitivity of EDM experiments in paramagnetic atoms and molecules to hadronic CP violation

Experiments searching for the electric dipole moment (EDM) of the electron d e utilize atomic/molecular states with one or more uncompensated electron spins, and these paramagnetic systems have recently achieved remarkable sensitivity to d e . If the source of CP violation resides entirely in the hadronic sector, the two-photon exchange processes between electrons and the nucleus induce CP-odd semileptonic interactions, parametrised by the Wilson coefficient C SP , and provide the dominant source of EDMs in paramagnetic systems instead of d e . We evaluate the C SP coefficients induced by the leading hadronic sources of CP violation, namely nucleon EDMs and CP-odd pion-nucleon couplings, by calculating the nucleon-number-enhanced CP-odd nuclear scalar polarisability, employing chiral perturbation theory at the nucleon level and the Fermi-gas model for the nucleus. This allows us to translate the ACME EDM limits from paramagnetic ThO into novel independent constraints on the QCD theta term |$\bar θ$| < 3 × 10 –8 , proton EDM |d p | < 2 × 10 –23 e cm, isoscalar CP-odd pion-nucleon coupling |$\bar g$$^{(1)}_{πNN}$| < 4 × 10 –10 , and color EDMs of quarks |$\tilde d$ u -$\tilde $d d | < 2 × 10 –24 cm. We note that further experimental progress with EDM experiments in paramagnetic systems may allow them to rival the sensitivity of EDM experiments with neutrons and diamagnetic atoms to these quantities.

Measurement of inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays in p + p collisions at s = 200 GeV with the STAR detector

We report a new measurement of the production cross section for inclusive electrons from open heavy-flavor hadron decays as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) at midrapidity (|y| < 0.7) in p + p collisions at √s = 200 GeV. Overall, the result is presented for 2.5 < P T < 10 GeV/c with an improved precision above 6 GeV/c with respect to the previous measurements, providing more constraints on perturbative QCD calculations. Moreover, this measurement also provides a high-precision reference for measurements of nuclear modification factors for inclusive electrons from open-charm and -bottom hadron decays in heavy-ion collisions.

Detectability of neutrino-signal fluctuations induced by the hadron-quark phase transition in failing core-collapse supernovae

Here we introduce a systematic and quantitative methodology for establishing the presence of neutrino oscillatory signals due to the hadron-quark phase transition (PT) in failing core-collapse supernovae from the observed neutrino event rate in water- or ice-based neutrino detectors. The methodology uses a likelihood ratio in the frequency domain as a test-statistic; it is employed for quantitative analysis of neutrino signals without assuming the frequency, amplitude, starting time, and duration of the PT-induced oscillations present in the neutrino events and thus it is suitable for analyzing neutrino signals from a wide variety of numerical simulations. We test the validity of this method by using a core-collapse simulation of a 17 solar-mass star by Zha et al. [Astrophys. J. 911, 74 (2021) ]. Based on this model, we further report the presence of a PT-induced oscillations quantitatively for a core-collapse supernovae out to a distance of ~10 kpc, ~5 kpc for IceCube and to a distance of ~10 kpc, ~5 kpc, and ~1 kpc for a 0.4 Mt mass water Cherenkov detector. This methodology will aid the investigation of a future galactic supernova and the study of hadron-quark phase in the core of core-collapse supernovae.

Data-driven estimates for light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected hadronic g − 2 window quantities

A number of discrepancies have emerged between lattice computations and data-driven dispersive evaluations of the RBC/UKQCD intermediate-window-hadronic contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. It is therefore interesting to obtain data-driven estimates for the light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected components of this window quantity, allowing for a more detailed comparison between the lattice and data-driven approaches. The aim of this paper is to provide these estimates, extending the analysis to several other window quantities, including two windows designed to focus on the region in which the two-pion contribution is dominant. Clear discrepancies are observed for all light-quark-connected contributions considered, while good agreement with lattice results is found for strange-plus-disconnected contributions to the quantities for which corresponding lattice results exist. The largest of these discrepancies is that for the RBC/UKQCD intermediate window, where, as previously reported, our data-driven result, a μ W 1 , lqc = 198.9 ( 1.1 ) × 10 − 10 , is in significant tension with the results of 8 different recent lattice determinations. Our strategy is the same as recently employed in obtaining data-driven estimates for the light-quark-connected and strange-plus-disconnected components of the full leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment. Updated versions of those earlier results are also presented, for completeness. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Three-point energy correlators in hadronic Higgs boson decays

We present the analytic calculation of the leading-order three-point energy correlator (EEEC) in hadronic Higgs decays, including both the gluon-initiated channel H → g g + X and quark-initiated channel H → q q ¯ + X . The phase-space integration is evaluated directly using Mandelstam variables s i j = ( p i + p j ) 2 , and the appearing square roots can be rationalized by either conformal ratios or celestial coordinate variables. Throughout the calculation, we observe the same transcendental function space as in N = 4 super–Yang-Mills theory and e + e − → hadrons . Different infrared limits are also explored using the full analytic result, offering the fixed-order data for EEEC factorization and resummation. Given its nontrivial shape dependence, the EEEC presents an excellent opportunity to explore the dynamics of gluon jets originating from the H → g g decay channel at future lepton colliders. Glue in hadrons at medium resolution and the QCD instanton vacuum

We discuss a general framework for the evaluation of the gluonic form factors in light hadrons at low momentum transfer, in the QCD instanton vacuum. At medium resolution of the order of the inverse mean instanton size, the glue is mostly localized in single or pairs of pseudoparticles and globally constrained by the fluctuations of their topological charges. These pseudoparticles trap light quarks, giving rise to emerging multiflavor ’t Hooft interactions. We explicitly evaluate the gluonic scalar, pseudoscalar, energy-momentum tensor (EMT), and the leading C -odd and C -even three-gluon hadronic form factors, at next to leading order in the instanton density, including molecular clusters of like and unlike instantons. We use the results for the EMT to address the contribution of the gluons in Ji’s mass and spin sum rules, at low resolution. When evolved, our results for the mass and spin composition of the nucleon are shown to be in good agreement with the recently reported lattice results at higher resolution. Phenomenology of TMD parton distributions in Drell-Yan and 𝑍 0 boson production in a hadron structure oriented approach

We present a first practical implementation of a recently proposed hadron structure oriented (HSO) approach to transverse momentum dependent (TMD) phenomenology applied to Drell-Yan-like processes, including lepton pair production at moderate 𝑄 2 and 𝑍 0 boson production. We compare and contrast general features of our methodology with other common practices and emphasize aspects that we view as improvements. Separately, we discuss the importance of treatments that preserve various theoretical properties of the nonperturbative parts of TMD parametrizations for future applications that have the extraction of hadron structure as a primary goal. These include the HSO’s preservation of a basic TMD parton-model-like framework even while accounting for full TMD factorization and evolution, explicit preservation of the integral relationship between TMD and collinear parton density functions, and the ability to meaningfully compare different theoretical models of nonperturbative TMD parton distributions. In our examples, we show that there is significant sensitivity at moderate 𝑄 2 to both the form of the nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence and the parametrization of collinear parton densities. However, we also find that evolving to 𝑄 2 =𝑀$^2_𝑍$, without fitting, results in a satisfactory postdiction of existing data for 𝑍0 production, nearly independently of the modeling of nonperturbative transverse momentum behavior. We argue that this demonstrates that moderate 𝑄 measurements should be given greater weight than high 𝑄 measurements in extractions of nonperturbative transverse momentum dependence. We also obtain new extractions of the nonperturbative Collins-Soper kernel within the HSO approach. We discuss its features and compare with some earlier extractions.

Quantum real-time evolution of entanglement and hadronization in jet production: Lessons from the massive Schwinger model

The possible link between entanglement and thermalization, and the dynamics of hadronization are addressed by studying the real-time response of the massive Schwinger model coupled to external sources. This setup mimics the production and fragmentation of quark jets, as the Schwinger model and quantum chromodynamics (QCD) share the properties of confinement and chiral symmetry breaking. By using simulations of quantum dynamics on classical hardware, we study the entanglement between the produced jets, and observe the growth of the corresponding entanglement entropy in time. This growth arises from the increased number of contributing eigenstates of the reduced density matrix with sufficiently large and close eigenvalues. We also investigate the physical nature of these eigenstates, and find that at early times they correspond to fermionic Fock states. We then observe the transition from these fermionic Fock states to mesonlike bound states as a function of time. In other words, we observe how hadronization develops in real time. At late times, the local observables at midrapidity (such as the fermion density and the electric field) approach approximately constant values, suggesting the onset of equilibrium and approach to thermalization. Sudakov double logs in single-inclusive hadron production in DIS at small x from the color glass condensate formalism

We investigate the high Q 2 (photon virtuality) limit of single-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering at small x , using the color glass condensate formalism at next-to-leading order. We focus on the Λ QCD 2 ≪ p h 2 ≪ Q 2 kinematic regime, where p h is the produced hadron transverse momentum, and extract the Sudakov double logarithms. We further argue that compatibility between the color glass condensate calculation and transverse momentum dependent distribution factorization at one-loop order can only be achieved if the small-x evolution is kinematically constrained. Toward a unified description of hadron scattering at all energies

The construction of general amplitudes satisfying symmetries and S -matrix constraints has been the primary tool in studying the spectrum of hadrons for over half a century. In this work, we present a new parametrization, which can fulfill many expectations of S -matrix and Regge theory and connects the essential physics of hadron scattering in the resonance region and in asymptotic limits. In this construction, dynamical information is entirely contained in Regge trajectories that generalize resonance poles in the complex energy plane to moving poles in the angular momentum plane. We highlight the salient features of the model, compare with existing literature on dispersive and dual amplitudes, and benchmark the formalism with an initial numerical application to the ρ and σ / f 0 ( 500 ) mesons in π π scattering. Utility of a hybrid approach to the hadronic vacuum polarization contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment

An accurate calculation of the leading-order hadronic vacuum polarization (LOHVP) contribution to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon ( a μ ) is key to determining whether a discrepancy, suggesting new physics, exists between the Standard Model and experimental results. This calculation can be expressed as an integral over Euclidean time of a current-current correlator G ( t ) , where G ( t ) can be calculated using lattice QCD or, with dispersion relations, from experimental data for e + e − → hadrons . The BMW/DMZ collaboration recently presented a hybrid approach in which G ( t ) is calculated using lattice QCD for most of the contributing t range, but using experimental data for the largest t (lowest energy) region. Here we study the advantages of varying the position t = t 1 separating lattice QCD from data-driven contributions. The total LOHVP contribution should be independent of t 1 , providing both a test of the experimental input and the robustness of the hybrid approach. We use this criterion and a correlated fit to show that Fermilab/HPQCD/MILC lattice QCD results from 2019 strongly favor the CMD-3 cross section data for e + e − → π + π − over a combination of earlier experimental results for this channel. Further, the resulting total LOHVP contribution obtained is consistent with the result obtained by BMW/DMZ, and supports the scenario in which there is no significant discrepancy between the experimental value for a μ and that expected in the Standard Model. We then discuss how improved lattice results in this hybrid approach could provide a more accurate total LOHVP across a wider range of t 1 values with an uncertainty that is smaller than that from either lattice QCD or data-driven approaches on their own. Strong coupling from hadronic τ -decay data including τ → π − π 0 ν τ from Belle

In previous work we have combined the π − π 0 , 2 π − π + π 0 , and π − 3 π 0 spectral data obtained from hadronic τ decays measured by the ALEPH and OPAL experiments, together with electroproduction data for several of the subleading hadronic modes and data for the K K ¯ mode to construct an inclusive nonstrange vector spectral function entirely based on experimental data, with no Monte-Carlo generated input. In this paper, we include, for the first time, the Belle τ → π − π 0 ν τ high-statistics decay data to construct a new inclusive nonstrange vector spectral function that combines more of the world’s available data. As no Belle data are at present available for the two 4 π modes, this requires a revised data analysis in comparison with our previous work. From the resulting new spectral function, we obtain a new determination of the strong coupling, α s , using our previously developed strategy based on finite-energy sum rules. We find, at the Z mass scale, α s ( m Z 2 ) = 0.1159 ( 14 ) . We discuss the smaller central value and larger error of our new result compared to our previous result, showing the shifts to be due mainly to significant changes in updated HFLAV results for the π − 3 π 0 decay mode. Measurement of the Jet Mass Distribution and Top Quark Mass in Hadronic Decays of Boosted Top Quarks in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ TeV

A measurement is reported of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement is performed in the lepton+jets channel of tt¯ events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay t→bW→bqq¯′ are reconstructed as a single jet with transverse momentum larger than 400 GeV. The tt¯ cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded at the particle level and used to extract a value of the top quark mass of 172.6±2.5 GeV. A novel jet reconstruction technique is used for the first time at the LHC, which improves the precision by a factor of 3 relative to an earlier measurement. This highlights the potential of measurements using boosted top quarks, where the new technique will enable future precision measurements.

R ( 3780 ) Resonance Interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -Wave Dominant State of Charmonium from Precise Measurements of the Cross Section of e + e − → Hadrons

We report the precise measurements of the cross section of e + e − → hadrons at center-of-mass energies from 3.645 to 3.871 GeV. We thereby perform the most precise study of the cross sections and find a complex system composed of three resonances of R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) . For the first time, we measure the R ( 3810 ) electronic width to be ( 19.4 ± 7.4 ± 12.1 ) eV . For the R ( 3760 ) resonance, we measure the mass to be ( 3751.9 ± 3.8 ± 2.8 ) MeV / c 2 , the total width to be ( 32.8 ± 5.8 ± 8.7 ) MeV , and the electronic width to be ( 184 ± 75 ± 86 ) eV . For the R ( 3780 ) resonance, we measure its mass to be ( 3778.7 ± 0.5 ± 0.3 ) MeV / c 2 , total width to be ( 20.3 ± 0.8 ± 1.7 ) MeV , and electronic width to be ( 265 ± 67 ± 83 ) eV . Forty-seven years ago, the ψ ( 3770 ) resonance was discovered, and was subsequently interpreted as the 1 D 1 3 -wave dominant state of charmonium. However, our analysis of the total-hadron cross sections indicates that the ψ ( 3770 ) is not a single state, but a complex system composed of the R ( 3760 ) , R ( 3780 ) , and R ( 3810 ) resonances. Among these, we interpret the R ( 3780 ) is a resonance dominated by the 1 D 1 3 charmonium state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Polarization transmission in the Hadron Storage Ring of the Electron-Ion Collider

The successful operation of the future Electron-Ion Collider is contingent on maintaining high hadron beam polarization up to 275 GeV. The Hadron Storage Ring lattice, however, features a symmetry-breaking interaction region that excites strong, nonsystematic spin resonances, posing a significant threat to polarization preservation. This paper systematically investigates two complementary strategies to ensure high polarization transmission. The first method involves optimizing the vertical betatron phase advance between Siberian snakes to orchestrate a cancellation of depolarizing kicks across the ring. We demonstrate through simulations that both dynamic and fixed-optics solutions based on this principle can successfully preserve polarization through the strongest resonances. The second, more powerful approach involves optimizing the snake rotation axes to suppress resonance driving terms at their source. We revisit established symmetric configurations, such as the Lee-Courant schemes, and introduce a novel, highly symmetric “Doubly Lee-Courant” (DLC) scheme, which enforces a local 𝜋 spin phase advance across every consecutive pair of snakes. Our analysis reveals a clear performance hierarchy, with the DLC configuration providing an exceptionally robust and energy-insensitive baseline for polarization preservation. We conclude that a hybrid strategy, using a DLC snake scheme as a symmetric foundation and betatron phase tuning for fine corrections, offers the most effective path forward for the EIC and future high-energy polarized-beam facilities.

CLAS Database for Studies of the Structure of Hadrons in Electromagnetic Processes

The CLAS Physics Database (CLAS DB) has been developed in collaboration between SINP at MSU and Hall B at Jefferson Lab. CLAS DB contains most experimental results on inclusive, semi-inclusive, and exclusive reactions on proton and nuclei obtained with the CLAS detector. The substantial part of these experimental results represents the only data sets available in the world. The results and analysis tools provided by the CLAS DB are of particular importance for studies of the structure of the ground and excited hadron states, offering insight into strong nonperturbative QCD dynamics, which underlie the generation of hadrons from quarks and gluons.
