Tip-Enhanced Raman Chemical and Chemical Reaction Imaging in H 2 O with Sub-3-nm Spatial Resolution

Reproducible chemical and chemical reaction nano-imaging at solid-liquid interfaces remains challenging, particularly when resolutions on the order of a few nm are sought after. In this work, we demonstrate the latter through liquid tip-enhanced Raman (TER) measurements that target gold nanoplates functionalized with 4-mercaptobenzonitrile (MBN). In addition to chemical imaging and local optical field nano-visualization with high spatial resolution, we observe the signatures of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid, which forms as a result of plasmon-induced hydrolysis of MBN. Evidently, the solvent leads to distinct plasmon-induced/enhanced chemical reaction pathways that have not been documented. Here this work shows that such reactions that take place at solid-liquid interfaces can be tracked with a record sub-3 nm spatial resolution via TER spectral nano-imaging in liquids.

Direct insights into the role of epoxy groups on cobalt sites for acidic H 2 O 2 production

Hydrogen peroxide produced by electrochemical oxygen reduction reaction provides a potentially cost effective and energy efficient alternative to the industrial anthraquinone process. In this study, we demonstrate that by modulating the oxygen functional groups near the atomically dispersed cobalt sites with proper electrochemical/chemical treatments, a highly active and selective oxygen reduction process for hydrogen peroxide production can be obtained in acidic electrolyte, showing a negligible amount of onset overpotential and nearly 100% selectivity within a wide range of applied potentials. Combined spectroscopic results reveal that the exceptionally enhanced performance of hydrogen peroxide generation originates from the presence of epoxy groups near the Co–N 4 centers, which has resulted in the modification of the electronic structure of the cobalt atoms. Computational modeling demonstrates these electronically modified cobalt atoms will enhance the hydrogen peroxide productivity during oxygen reduction reaction in acid, providing insights into the design of electroactive materials for effective peroxide production.<

Thermodynamic guiding principles of high-capacity phase transformation materials for splitting H 2 O and CO 2 by thermochemical looping

Here, thermochemical looping splitting of water and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) with greenhouse-gas-free (GHG-free) energy has the potential to help address the Gt-scale GHG emissions challenge. Reaction thermodynamics largely contributes to the main bottlenecks of cost reduction for thermochemical looping water/CO 2 splitting cycle. Here, we analyze thermodynamic driving forces in such cycles with two-phase ternary ferrites as model systems. We find that cation configurational entropy chiefly determines the change of partial molar entropy with oxygen stoichiometry. In addition, our phase diagram analysis accurately predicts the optimal Fe ratio for maximal water/CO 2 splitting capacity in thermal reduction and in chemical reduction based cycles, underlining the significance of phase boundary positions. With chemical reduction, >10% CO 2 conversion and high oxygen exchange capacity can both be achieved. Furthermore, our reduced Gibbs free energy model illustrates critical thermodynamic factors that influence the water/CO 2 splitting capacity. Our research reveals the thermodynamic driving forces underlying the unconventional high-capacity Fe-poor ferrites, further explained via phase diagrams of Fe–Co–O, Fe–Ni–O and Fe–Mg–O. Future materials improvements can be guided by our reduced Gibbs free energy model.
