New space initiatives through large generic structures

New possibilities in satellite communications, surveillance, and orbital experimentation provided by the capability to construct and deploy Large Space Structures (LSS) are presented. The advent of the Shuttle will allow deployment of larger antennas with much larger gain sizes, noting new applications in communications, radiometry, and radar in frequencies from 0.24 to 14 GHz. Applications in multi-beam communication which can hold spot sizes on the ground down to 30 miles in diameter, new applications of the large aperture radar antenna, and estimates of soil moisture by the microwave radiometer are discussed. The Solar Power Satellite consisting of a large solar collector orbiting the earth at geosynchronous altitude over the equator which requires ability to construct LSS in space is described, noting the design of solar cells and materials of construction, including graphite composites and aluminum alloys. Space construction procedures and equipment are considered, noting that the most likely procedure would deliver the subsystems to orbit separately, and then construct the spacecraft on-orbit and assemble the satellite.

Generic aerocapture atmospheric entry study. Volume 2: Trajectory appendices

Aerothermodynamic and control system parameters and performance are discussed. Aerocapture trajectories were run for several combinations of entry path angles and velocities for the SO2P, MSR, and Uranus missions. The SO2P trajectories represent a Titan atmospheric entry for orbit about Saturn; the MSR trajectories represent a Mars atmospheric entry for orbit about Mars; similarly, the Uranus trajectories enter an Uranus atmosphere to achieve orbit about Uranus.

Formulation of a dynamic analysis method for a generic family of hoop-mast antenna systems

Analytical studies of mast-cable-hoop-membrane type antennas were conducted using a transfer matrix numerical analysis approach. This method, by virtue of its specialization and the inherently easy compartmentalization of the formulation and numerical procedures, can be significantly more efficient in computer time required and in the time needed to review and interpret the results.

Metallization with generic metallo-organic inks

The use and fabrication of metallo-organic films are discussed. Metallo-organic compounds are ones in which a metal is linked to a long chain carbon ligand through a hetero atom such as O, S, N, P or As. Films formed by the thermal decomposition of these metallo-organics are called MOD films. In order that the products of decomposition contain only CO2, H2O, and in rare cases nitrogen compounds, and to avoid S containing products, the use of a set of metallo-organic compounds for ink fabrication where the linking hetero atom was oxygen was pioneered. These links were made from commercially available carboxylates, or synthesized from commonly available reagents. The processing is described and the molecular design criteria are given. The particular carboxylates or amine carboxylates selected were the octoates or neodecanoates, and they are described.

Generic composite flywheel designs

Fiber reinforced composites belong to a new class of materials and allow great flexibility in flywheel design. The most efficient flywheel may no longer have the classic Stodola taper and indeed, may not even be round. Some of the flywheel designs that have been developed in the past are discussed. Although choice of material, mounts and service requirements often dictate the final design choice for a particular application, the composite flywheels in this paper are classified within a geometric framework, a simple stress analysis of a circular disk is carried out.

Three-layer Generic Ganymedes: Structure and Evolution

Accurate, three layered structural models were generated for Ganymede and Callisto. Three layered satellites consist of a rock core, a region of mixed rock and ice, and an outer shell of pure ice. This structure would result from either accretional melting of the outermost region of the satellite or differentiation subsequent to localized melting. A completely undifferentiated ice rock satellite possesses only the single, top boundary layer and, in this case, melting is also relatively difficult to initiate; this suggests that, if accretional melting results in a small degree of differentiation initially, subsequent melting may readily occur as the satellite warms due to radiogenic heating. Alternatively, if accretion is not accompanied by a small degree of differentiation, it may prove too difficult to initiate nonaccretional melting and the satellite might remain undifferentiated indefinitely.

Generic Structural Elements

This research concentrated on improving beam theories as applicable to composite structures. Confirmation is sought for analytical predictions using a new beam theory based on the assumption that cross-sections of the beam are infinitely rigid in their own plane, but free to warp out-of-plane, of these analytical predictions were sought during the current reporting.

Experimental and analytical generic space station dynamic models

A dynamic model used for verification of analytical and experimental methods is documented. The model consists of five substructures to simulate the multibody, low frequency nature of large space structures. Design considerations which led to a fundamental vibration frequency of less than one Hz are described. Finite element analysis used to predict the vibration modes and frequencies of the experimental model is presented. In addition, modeling of cable suspension effects using prestressed vibration analysis is described. Details of the expermental and analytical models are included to permit replication of the study. Results of the modal vibration tests and analysis are presented in a separate document.

A generic applications subroutine library for the MPP

A new methodology to increase the utility of the Massively Parallel Processor (MPP) was developed, and is presented as an addition to the current methods of using the MPP. This methodology provides for the development of an MPP side abstraction layer that is callable from any host side high level language. Routines in the abstraction layer have the option of using a powerful software tool for accessing the stager as virtual memory. An additional abstraction layer that allows for remote access to the MPP via DECnet is discussed. This integrated approach to programming the MPP is a valuable tool for the implementation of interactive user driver systems that require the computational capabilities of the MPP as well as a controlled user view. It is expected that this methodology will be used to integrate the MPP into many such systems, and thus promote greater use of the MPP by scientific researchers who are accustomed to user friendly environments.

Investigation of generic hub fairing and pylon shapes to reduce hub drag

Reported are investigations of fairing configurations pointed toward substantially reducing hub drag. Experimental investigations have shown the importance of hub-fairing camber, lower-surface curvature, and relative size of the drag. The significance of pylon and hub fairings in combination have also been shown. Model test data presented here documented these findings, and also showed the effect of gaps and hub-fairing inclination angle on drag. From a drag standpoint, the best hub fairing had a circular arc, upper-surface curvature, a flat bottom surface, and 8.75% camber.
