Simulating a Low-Weight Encoding of the Fermi-Hubbard Model Feedback and Support with QAOA

Recent work [1] has proposed a compact fermion-to-qubit mapping for the Fermi-Hubbard model (FHM), potentially lowering the overhead needed to simulate such a system on quantum hardware. In prior work [2], we numerically investigated how well a quantum annealer could prepare ground states of the FHM encoded using the resource-efficient mapping. In order to compare these results to gate-model systems, we turn to a QAOA-style approach and replace the annealing schedule with both Trotterizations thereof and also more general Hamiltonian-variational ansatze based on the terms of the mapped FH Hamiltonian. We investigate the achievable ground state fidelities of these gate sequences, consider various optimizations of the ansatze structure, and offer resource estimations of the optimized QAOA protocols for near-term hardware.

A conformal oxidation-resistant, plasma-polymerized coating

A comparative study was made of the surface recession (etching) of thin films of plasma polymerized tetrafluoro ethylene (PPTFE), polytetrafluoro ethylene (PTFE), and ion-beam sputter deposited polytetrafluoro ethylene (SPTFE) exposed to ground-state atomic oxygen downstream from a nonequilibrium radio-frequency O2 plasma. At 22 C, the etch rates for PTFE, SPTFE, and PPTFE were in the ratio of 8.7:1.8:1.0. A thin, conformal coating of PPTFE (etch rate of 0.3 nm/h at 22 C) was found to protect an underlying cast film of a reactive polymer, cis-1,4 polybutadiene, against ground-state atomic oxygen attack for the time required to fully etch away the PPTFE coating. From ESCA analysis, PTFE exhibited only minor surface oxidation (uptake of 0.5 atom percent O) upon etching, its F/C ratio decreasing slightly from 2.00 to 1.97; PPTFE exhibited considerable surface oxidation (uptake of 5.9 atom percent O) intermediate between those of PTFE and PPTFE, with a decrease in F/C ratio from 1.73 to 1.67. A plasma-polymerized fluorocarbon coating such as PPTFE might be useful for space applications to protect polymers that are vulnerable to oxidation or degradation by oxygen atoms.

Lowest ionization potentials of Al2

Potential curves for the lowest two electronic states, X 2Sigma(+)g and A 2Pi(u), of Al2(+) were computed using complete active space SCF/multireference CI wave functions and large Gaussian basis sets. The lowest observable vertical ionization potential, to Al2(+) X 2Sigma(+)g, of the Al2 X 3 Pi(u) ground state is calculated to occur around 6.1 eV, in excellent agreement with the experimental range of 6.0 to 6.42 eV obtained in recent cluster ionization studies by Cox and co-workers. The second vertical ionization potential, to Al2(+) A 2Pi(u), occurs near 6.4 eV, also within the experimental range. The adiabatic IP of 5.90 eV is in good agreement with the value of 5.8 to 6.1 eV deduced by Hanley and co-workers from the difference in thresholds between collision induced dissociation processes of Al3(+). The computed IP values are somewhat larger than those deduced from branching ratios in cluster fragmentation experiments by Jarrold and co-workers. The observation of an ionization threshold below 6.42 eV is shown to be incompatible with an Al2 ground electronic state assignment of 3Sigma(-)g, but the separation between the two lowest states of Al2 is so small that it is likely that both are populated in the experiments, so that this does not provide unambiguous support for the recent theoretical assignment of the ground state as 3Pi(u).

Feshbach resonances in positron-hydrogen scattering

Using a wave function including the 1s-2s-2p eigenstates of hydrogen and the 1s ground state of positronium, we have calculated the position and width of the lowest Feshbach resonance in the e(+)-H system, which lies between the positronium rearrangement threshold and the n=2 hydrogen threshold. The method differs from the usual close-coupling method, resembling in its formulation the projection operator technique, although orthogonality of closed-channel and open-channel functions is not demanded. The resonance lies 9.8281 eV above the ground state of hydrogen and has width of 0.029 eV in this approximation.

The reaction efficiency of thermal energy oxygen atoms with polymeric materials

The reaction efficiency of several polymeric materials with thermal-energy (0.04 eV translational energy), ground-state (O3P) oxygen atoms was determined by exposing the materials to a room temperature gas containing a known concentration of atomic oxygen. The reaction efficiency measurements were conducted in two flowing afterglow systems of different configuration. Atomic oxygen concentration measurements, flow, transport and surface dose analysis is presented in this paper. The measured reaction efficiencies of Kapton, Mylar, polyethylene, D4-polyethylene and Tedlar are .001 to .0001 those determined with high-energy ground-state oxygen atoms in low earth orbit or in a high-velocity atom beam. D4-polyethylene exhibits a large kinetic isotope effect with atomic oxygen at thermal but not hyperthermal atom energies.

The lowest ionization potentials of Al2

Potential curves for the lowest two electronic states (X 2 sigma g + and A 2 pi u) of Al2(+) were computed using complete active space SCF/multireference CI wave functions and large Gaussian basis sets. The lowest observable vertical ionization potential (to Al2(+) X 2 sigma g +) of the Al2 X 3 pi u ground state is calculated to occur around 6.1 eV, in excellent agreement with the experimental range of 6.0 to 6.42 eV obtained in recent cluster ionization studies by Cox and co-workers. The second vertical ionization potential (to Al2(+) A 2 pi u) occurs near 6.4 eV, also within the experimental range. The observation of an ionization threshold below 6.42 eV is shown to be incompatible with an Al2 ground electronic state assignment of 3 sigma g -, but the separation between the two lowest states of Al2 is so small that it is likely that both are populated in the experiments, so that this does not provide unambiguous support for the recent theoretical assignment of the ground state as 3 pi u.

Forbidden lines of np/q/ ions. I - Detailed balance and line intensity ratios

The detailed balance equations are solved in the ground state terms of 37 ions of C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S and Fe; atomic data for 235 transitions of these ions are tabulated, and 14 line ratios of q = 2,4 ions and eight line ratios of q = 3 ions are graphed. Forbidden emission lines of these ions are in the far and near UV, visible, and near and far IR regions of the spectrum. In addition, detailed calculations of the relative populations of the levels of the ground state are presented as a function of temperature and density.

Towards Accurate Predictions of Martensitic Transition Temperatures for Shape Memory Alloys from Ab Initio Simulations

Experimentally, NiTi undergoes a single martensitic phase transition around 341 K from the lowtemperature (T) monoclinic B19’ phase (P21/m) to the high-temperature cubic B2 phase (Pm3m). Theoretically, an orthorhombic B33 (Cmcm) has also been proposed as the T=0 ground state structure, although this phase has never been observed. Accurate predictions of martensitic transition temperatures (MTT) have remained elusive in part due to several well-known theoretical complexities of these systems including low temperature instabilities of the B2 phase. Recently, we proposed a rigorous thermodynamic integration approach based on ab initio simulations to resolve many of these difficulties [1,2]. However, an unsatisfying overprediction of the MTT relative to experiment (by ~100 K) means a fully quantitative theory is still lacking. In this work, we report several new developments to our method that bring first principles theory and experiment much closer into agreement. Our calculations indicate that phonon free energies at low temperature stabilizes B19’ over B33, rationalizing B19’ as the ground state down to T=0. We also find that accurate computations of the electronic free energy, i.e. the change in energy and the appearance of electronic configurational entropy due to finite temperature, is crucial to obtain accurate MTT. Incorporating these corrections results in an MTT prediction of 365 K for binary NiTi, which is in very close agreement with experiment. Our theoretical approach is expected to be a broadly applicable and predictive theory for MTT of SMAs.

Transport properties of monatomic carbon

Transport collision integrals for each of the 18 molecular C2 states that dissociate into ground state carbon atoms are presented. The integrals are obtained by fitting two-body semiempirical interaction potentials, for which the collision integrals are tabulated, to experimental and/or accurate theoretical calculations for each of these states. The collision integrals are applied to calculate the diffusion coefficient, viscosity, and translational contribution to the thermal conductivity of monatomic carbon at 1-atm pressure from 1000 K to 25,000 K. Because of ablation injection, monatomic carbon is an important flow field constituent of ablative flow during planetary entry, and knowledge of the transport properties for carbon species is required for calculating the flow field properties and surface heating.

Monodeuterated methane in the outer solar system. I Spectroscopic analysis of the bands at 1.55 and 1.95 microns

The analysis of the near-infrared spectrum of monodeuterated methane (CH3D) near 6400/cm and 5100/cm is presented. Three new parallel bands which have locally perturbed upper states connecting with the ground state are identified, and approximate rotational constants are derived. The band centered near 6425/cm and the 9613 A band previously analyzed by Lutz, Danehy, and Ramsay (1978) are found to form an apparent vibrational progression with the nu2 fundamental at 2200/cm, and vibrational assignments of 3nu2 and 5nu2, respectively, are proposed. Detailed comparison of the rotational constants of the states involved is shown to support these assignments.

The internal state distribution of CN radicals produced in the photolysis of HC2CN and CH3CN

The energy partitioning in CN radicals produced by the vacuum ultraviolet photodissociation of HC2CN and CH3CN is studied by means of laser-induced fluorescence of the B-X transition. Experiments are performed in two collision regimes: (1) in the low-collision number regime, the energy partitioning in CN(X) is measured; (2) in the high-collision number regime, the formation of CN(A) is monitored. It is shown that photodissociation of HC2CN in its linear predissociative 1Sigma(+) state produces predominantly ground-state CN in rotationally and vibrationally excited states. The vibrational population ratios and the temperatures computed from a Boltzmann fit of the rotational levels are given in a table. The excitation of CH3CN produces CN radicals almost entirely in the first excited A-state with vibrational excitation.

The computed spectrum of AlC

The low-lying (up to about 40,000/cm) doublet and quartet states of AlC have been studied at the CASSCF and MRCI levels of theory. The bonding in the X4Sigma(-) state is shown to involve three one-electron bonds. The first excited state, a 2Pi, lies about 8700/cm higher and like the X4Sigma(-) state is derived from ground state Al and C, but has a two-electron pi bond leading to a much shorter bond length.

The OI 989 and 1173 A multiplets in the dayglow

Sounding rocket measurements of the O-I 989-A dayglow obtained in 1978, 1980, and 1985 are discussed. The 989-A intensity and multiplet ratios are consistent with total branching losses (to atomic states other than the ground state) of 1.5-4 x 10 to the -4th. It is found that the 1173/989 intensity ratio is dependent only on the 1173/989 branching ratio and the atomic oxygen concentration when viewing upward from rocket altitudes.

Theoretical study of the spectroscopy of B2

A study is made of the singlet, triplet, and quintet states of B2 below 45,000/cm at the multireference configuration-interaction level. The stronger bonding in B2, as compared with Al2, manifests itself in the potential energy curves. In B2, five of the six states dissociating to the ground state atoms are bound, compared with only two for Al2. Radiative lifetimes are reported for the lowest vibrational level of many of the bound triplet states of B2.

Causality problems for Fermi's two-atom system

Let A and B be two atoms or, more generally, a 'source' and a 'detector' separated by some distance R. At t = 0 A is in an excited state, B in its ground state, and no photons are present. A theorem is proved that in contrast to Einstein causality and finite signal velocity the excitation probability of B is nonzero immediately after t = 0. Implications are discussed.

Measurements of Line Positions and Strengths of HD O-18 and D2 O-18 in the 2500-4280 cm(exp -1) Region

Measurements of line positions and strengths of D2 O-18 and HD O-18 were obtained with a Fourier transform spectrometer. The data were analyzed to obtain energy levels of the (100), (020), and (001) vibrational states of HD O-18 and the (001) and (011) states of D2 O-18 and the vibrational bands of these states connected to the ground state covered the spectral region from 2500 to 4278 cm(exp -1). 456 absorption lines of D2 O-18 and 856 lines of HD O-18 were assigned from the spectra. The measurements were of oxygen-18 enriched samples of deuterated water vapor and the spectra also contained features of HD O-16, D2 O-16, H2 O-16, H2 O-17 and H2 O-18 of which several were used as frequency calibration standards.
