Development of a 83 mKr source for the calibration of the CENNS-10 liquid argon detector

We report on the preparation of and calibration measurements with a 83 mKr source for the CENNS-10 liquid argon detector. 83 mKr atoms generated in the decay of a 83 Rb source were introduced into the detector via injection into the Ar circulation loop. Scintillation light arising from the 9.4 keV and 32.1 keV conversion electrons in the decay of 83 mKr in the detector volume were then observed. This calibration source allows the characterization of the low-energy response of the CENNS-10 detector and is applicable to other low-energy-threshold detectors. The energy resolution of the detector was measured to be 9% at the total 83 mKr decay energy of 41.5 keV. Lastly, we performed an analysis to separately calibrate the detector using the two conversion electrons at 9.4 keV and 32.1 keV.

Search for the semi-muonic charmonium decay J/ψ → D−μ+νμ + c.c.

Abstract Using (10087 ± 44) × 10 6 J/ψevents collected with the BESIII detector at the BEPCIIe + e − storage ring at the center-of-mass energy of$$ \sqrt{s} $$ s = 3.097 GeV, we present a search for the rare semi-muonic charmonium decayJ/ψ→D − μ + ν μ + c.c.. Since no significant signal is observed, we set an upper limit of the branching fraction to be$$ \mathcal{B} $$ B (J/ψ→D − μ + ν μ + c.c.) < 5.6 × 10 −7 at 90% confidence level. This is the first search for the weak decay of charmonium with a muon in the final state.

Cross section measurements of the $e^+e^–$ → $D^{*+}D^{*–}$ and $e^+e^–$ → $D^{*+}D^{–}$ processes at center-of-mass energies from 4.085 to 4.600 GeV

The Born cross sections of the $e^+e^–$ → $D^{*+}D^{*–}$ and $e^+e^–$ → $D^{*+}D^{–}$ processes are measured using $e^+e^–$ collision data collected with the BESIII experiment at center-of-mass energies from 4.085 to 4.600 GeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 15.7 fb -1 . The results are consistent with and more precise than the previous measurements by the Belle, Babar and CLEO collaborations. The measurements are essential for understanding the nature of vector charmonium and charmonium-like states.

Amplitude analysis and branching fraction measurement of the decay $D_s^{+} → K^+π^+π^-$

Using 6.32 fb -1 of e + e - collision data collected at the center-of-mass energies between 4.178 and 4.226 GeV with the BESIII detector, we perform an amplitude analysis of the decay D$^+_s$ → K + π + π - and determine the amplitudes of the various intermediate states. The absolute branching fraction of D$^+_s$ → K + π + π - is measured to be (6.11 ± 0.18 stat. ± 0.11 syst. ) x 10 -3 . The branching fractions of the dominant intermediate processes D$^+_s$ → K + ρ 0 , ρ 0 → π + π - and D$^+_s$ → K*(892) 0 π + , K*(892) 0 → K + π - are determined to be (1.96 ± 0.19 stat . ± 0.23 syst. ) x 10 -3 and (1.85 ± 0.12 stat . ± 0.13 syst .) x 10 -3 , respectively. The intermediate resonances f 0 (500), f 0 (980), and f 0 (1370) are observed for the first time in this channel.

Parametric longitudinal coupling between a high-impedance superconducting resonator and a semiconductor quantum dot singlet-triplet spin qubit

Coupling qubits to a superconducting resonator provides a mechanism to enable long-distance entangling operations in a quantum computer based on spins in semiconducting materials. Here, we demonstrate a controllable spin-photon coupling based on a longitudinal interaction between a spin qubit and a resonator. We show that coupling a singlet-triplet qubit to a high-impedance superconducting resonator can produce the desired longitudinal coupling when the qubit is driven near the resonator’s frequency. We measure the energy splitting of the qubit as a function of the drive amplitude and frequency of a microwave signal applied near the resonator antinode, revealing pronounced effects close to the resonator frequency due to longitudinal coupling. By tuning the amplitude of the drive, we reach a regime with longitudinal coupling exceeding 1 MHz. This mechanism for qubit-resonator coupling represents a stepping stone towards producing high-fidelity two-qubit gates mediated by a superconducting resonator.

A compact filtered x-ray diode array spectrometer for the National Ignition Facility: SENTINEL

Sentinel is a 16-channel, filtered x-ray diode array spectrometer that has been developed to measure ~1 keV–20 keV x-ray emission generated by the National Ignition Facility (NIF) laser. Unlike the large, fixed-port versions of this diagnostic that currently exist on the NIF (known as Dante), Sentinel is a Diagnostic Instrument Manipulator compatible such that it can be fielded along the polar or equatorial lines-of-sight—an essential new capability for characterizing the often anisotropic x-ray emission from laser-driven sources. Here, we present the diagnostic design along with preliminary diode calibrations and performance results. The novel, small-form-factor x-ray diode design allows for ≳5×–25× increased channel areal density over that of Dante, simultaneously enabling improved diagnostic robustness and fidelity of spectral reconstructions. While the Sentinel diagnostic is anticipated to improve line-of-sight spectral characterization of x-ray sources for a wide variety of programs on the NIF, the compact and portable design is also attractive to small- and mid-scale facilities with limited diagnostic real estate.

Observation of the Y(4230) and a new structure in ${\boldsymbol e^+\boldsymbol e^- \boldsymbol\rightarrow \boldsymbol K^+\boldsymbol K^-\boldsymbol J/\boldsymbol\psi}$

The cross sections of $e^+e^- \rightarrow K^+K^-J/\psi$ at center-of-mass energies from 4.127 to 4.600 GeV are measured based on 15.6 fb -1 data collected with the BESIII detector operating at the BEPCII storage ring. Two resonant structures are observed in the line shape of the cross sections. The mass and width of the first structure are measured to be ($4225.3\pm2.3\pm21.5$) MeV and ($72.9\pm6.1\pm30.8$) MeV, respectively. They are consistent with those of the established $Y(4230)$. The second structure is observed for the first time with a statistical significance greater than 8σ, denoted as $Y(4500)$. Its mass and width are determined to be ($4484.7\pm13.3\pm24.1$) MeV and ($111.1\pm30.1\pm15.2$) MeV, respectively. The first presented uncertainties are statistical and the second ones are systematic. The product of the electronic partial width with the decay branching fraction $\Gamma(Y(4230)\to e^+ e^-) \mathcal{B}(Y(4230) \to K^+ K^- J/\psi)$ is reported.

Task-Specific Phosphonium Iongels by Fast UV-Photopolymerization for Solid-State Sodium Metal Batteries

Sodium metal batteries are an emerging technology that shows promise in terms of materials availability with respect to lithium batteries. Solid electrolytes are needed to tackle the safety issues related to sodium metal. In this work, a simple method to prepare a mechanically robust and efficient soft solid electrolyte for sodium batteries is demonstrated. A task-specific iongel electrolyte was prepared by combining in a simple process the excellent performance of sodium metal electrodes of an ionic liquid electrolyte and the mechanical properties of polymers. The iongel was synthesized by fast (<1 min) UV photopolymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) in the presence of a saturated 42%mol solution of sodium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (NaFSI) in trimethyl iso-butyl phosphonium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (P111i4FSI). The resulting soft solid electrolytes showed high ionic conductivity at room temperature (≥10 -3 S cm -1 ) and tunable storage modulus (10 4 –10 7 Pa). Iongel with the best ionic conductivity and good mechanical properties (Iongel10) showed excellent battery performance: Na/iongel/NaFePO 4 full cells delivered a high specific capacity of 140 mAh g -1 at 0.1 C and 120 mAh g -1 at 1 C with good capacity retention after 30 cycles.

Ultrastable Carboxyl–Functionalized Pore–Space–Partitioned Metal–Organic Frameworks for Gas Separation

Isoreticular chemistry, which enables property optimization by changing compositions without changing topology, is a powerful synthetic strategy. One of the biggest challenges facing isoreticular chemistry is to extend it to ligands with strongly coordinating substituent groups such as unbound –COOH, because competitive interactions between such groups and metal ions can derail isoreticular chemistry. It is even more challenging to have an isoreticular series of carboxyl-functionalized MOFs capable of encompassing chemically disparate metal ions. Furthermore, with the simultaneous introduction of carboxyl functionalization and pore space partition, a family of carboxyl-functionalized materials is developed in diverse compositions from homometallic Cr 3+ and Ni 2+ to heterometallic Co 2+ /V 3+ , Ni 2+ /V 3+ , Co 2+ /In 3+ , Co 2+ /Ni 2+ . Cr-MOFs remain highly crystalline in boiling water. Unprecedentedly, one Cr-MOF can withstand the treatment cycle with 10m NaOH and 12m HCl, allowing reversible inter-conversion between unbound –COOH acid form and –COO – base form. These materials exhibit excellent sorption properties such as high uptake capacity for CO 2 (100.2 cm 3 g –1 ) and hydrocarbon gases (e.g., 142.1 cm 3 g –1 for C 2 H 2 , 110.5 cm 3 g –1 for C 2 H 4 ) at 1 bar and 298K, high benzene/cyclohexane selectivity (up to ≈40), and promising separation performance for gas mixtures such as C 2 H 2 /CO 2 and C 2 H 2 /C 2 H 4 .
