The research work dealt primarily with reducing the atom leakage rate using as storage surfaces the FEP Teflon surfaces conventionally used in contemporary hydrogen maser frequency standards. Some work was also done on a possible alternative to the conventional surfaces, but the results here and elsewhere suggest that the alternative surface is not promising enough to warrant much further work.
The feasibility was investigated of electrochemically oxidizing vapor deposited aluminum coatings to produce porous aluminum oxide coatings with submicron pore diameters and with straight channels normal to the substrate surface. Porous aluminum oxide coatings were produced from vapor deposited aluminum coatings on thin stainless steel (304), copper, Teflon (FEP) and Kapton substrates and also on pure aluminum substrates. Scanning electron microscope examination indicated that porous oxide coatings can be produced with straight channels, appropriate pore diameters and none or minimal intervening residual aluminum. The oxide coatings on the copper and Kapton substrates had the straightest channels and in general were superior to those fabricated on the other substrate materials. For oxide coatings fabricated at 600 V and 300 V, pore diameters were 0.4-0.6, and 0.3 micron with center-to-center spacing of 0.7-0.8, and 0.4 micron, respectively. Estimated direct labor and materials costs to prepare an oxide mask is anticipated to be about $4-$6 per square foot.
Ion beam sputter processing rates as well as pertinent characteristics of etched targets and films are described. An argon ion beam source was used to sputter etch and deposit the fluoropolymers PTFE, FEP, and CTFE. Ion beam energy, current density, and target temperature were varied to examine effects on etch and deposition rates. The ion etched fluoropolymers yield cone or spire-like surface structures which vary depending upon the type of polymer, ion beam power density, etch time, and target temperature. Sputter target and film characteristics documented by spectral transmittance measurements, X-ray diffraction, ESCA, and SEM photomicrographs are included.
A test bed for experimental evaluation of a fixed solar collector which combines an evacuated glass tube solar receiver with a flat plate/black chrome plated copper absorber and an asymmetric vee-trough concentrator was designed and constructed. Earlier predictions of thermal performance were compared with test data acquired for a bare vacuum tube receiver; and receiver tubes with Alzak aluminum, aluminized FEP Teflon film laminated sheet metal and second surface ordinary mirror reflectors. Test results and system economics as well as objectives of an ongoing program to obtain long-term performance data are discussed.
The charging and discharging behavior of square, planar samples of silvered, fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) Teflon thermal control tape was measured. The equilibrium voltage profiles scaled with the width of the sample. A wide range of discharge pulse characteristics was observed, and the area dependences of the peak current, charge, and pulse widths are described. The observed scaling of the peak currents with area was weaker than that previously reported. The discharge parameters were observed to depend strongly on the grounding impedance and the beam voltage. Preliminary results suggest that measuring only the return-current-pulse characteristics is not adequate to describe the spacecraft discharging behavior of this material. The seams between strips of tape appear to play a fundamental role in determining the discharging behavior. An approximate propagation velocity for the charge cleanoff was extracted from the data. The samples - 232, 1265, and 5058 square centimeters in area - were exposed at ambient temperature to a 1- to 2-nA/sq cm electron beam at energies of 10, 15, and 20 kilovolts in a 19-meter-long by 4.6-meter-diameter simulation facility at the Lewis Research Center.
Metal plates partially covered by 0.01-centimeter-thick fluorinated ethylene-propylene (FEP) Teflon were charged in the Lewis Research Center's geomagnetic substorm simulation facility using 5-, 8-, 10-, and 12-kilovolt electron beams. Surface voltage as a function of time was measured for various initial conditions (Teflon discharged or precharged) with the metal plate grounded or floating. Results indicate that both the charging rates and the levels to which the samples become charged are influenced by the geometry and initial charge state of the insulating surfaces. The experiments are described and the results are presented and discussed. NASA charging analyzer program (NASCAP) models of the experiments have been generated, and the predictions obtained are described. Implications of the study results for spacecraft are discussed.
Results of exploratory development on the design, fabrication and testing of transparent conductive coatings, conductive bulk materials and grounding techniques for application to high resistivity spacecraft dielectric materials to obtain control of static charge buildup are presented. Deposition techniques for application of indium oxide, indium/tin oxide and other metal oxide films on Kapton, FEP Teflon, OSR and solar cell coverglasses discussed include RF and Magnetron sputtering and vapor deposition. Development, fabrication and testing of conductive glass tiles for OSR and solar cell coverglass applications is discussed. Several grounding techniques for rapid charge dissipation from the conductively coated polymer and glass dielectrics which were developed and tested in thermal cycled and electron plasma environments are described. The optical and electrical characterization and aging effects of these coatings, bulk materials and grounding techniques are reviewed as they apply to the performance of their design functions in a geosynchronous orbit environment.
Solar cells have been fabricated which achieved the highest power to mass ratios and radiation stability yet reported for silicon devices. The thinnest cells (.04 mm) had initial efficiencies in excess of 2 watts per gram (AMO) and 1.7 watts per gram after an irradiation of 1 x 10 to the 15th equivalent 1 MeV electrons per square centimeter. The cells have been successfully interconnected by welding and filtered using a FEP bonded, ceria-doped microsheet of six mil thickness. Handling losses during cell manufacture and panel assembly may be minimized through the use of an integral reinforcing perimeter or ribs which remove almost all restrictions on cell thickness and area. Such a cell is typically composed of a main section which can be as thin as 0.015 mm and is supported at the edge by a thicker border (0.20 mm) of silicon.

The characteristics of satellites are influenced by the electrical properties of the dielectric exterior. It was found in simulated space environment tests that the electrical conductivities of dielectrics are affected as the result of interactions with various components of the environment. The degree to which the conductivity was affected varied with material. In some instances the changes found to occur could be used to advantage, particularly if they could be enhanced. For example, the increased electrical conductivity of Kapton resulting from solar illumination could be used to advantage to eliminate the charge storage leading to electrical breakdown during magnetic substorms. Similarly the relative immunity of FEP Teflon to change from response to the space environment makes it a logical choice as a solar cell cover in a high-voltage solar array.
A technique for producing an acid inventory control member by spraying FEP onto a partially screened carbon paper backing is discussed. Theoretical analysis of the acid management indicates that the vapor composition of 103% H3PO4 is approximately 1.0 ppm P4O10. An SEM evaluation of corrosion resistance of phenolic resins and graphite/phenolic resin composites in H3PO4 at 185 C shows specific surface etching. Carbonization of graphite/phenolic bipolar plates is achieved without blistering.
A procedure is described for using argon and oxygen plasmas to promote adhesion of parylene coatings upon many difficult-to-bond substrates. Substrates investigated were gold, nickel, kovar, teflon (FEP), kapton, silicon, tantalum, titanium, and tungsten. Without plasma treatment, 180 deg peel tests yield a few g/cm (oz/in) strengths. With dc plasma treatment in the deposition chamber, followed by coating, peel strengths are increased by one to two orders of magnitude.
An experimental effort has been undertaken to examine the effect of plasma pretreatment of various substrate materials coated with a polymer in the parylene family. This report describes the procedure and discusses initial data which indicate using plasmas of argon and oxygen to promote adhesion of parylene coatings upon many difficult-to-bond substrates. Substrates investigated were gold, nickel, kovar, teflon (FEP), kapton, silicon, tantalum, titanium, and tungsten. Without plasma treatment, 180 deg peel tests yield a few g/cm (oz/in) strengths. With dc plasma treatment in the deposition chamber, followed by coating, peel strengths are increased by one to two orders of magnitude.
New method for testing peel strength of particular thermal-control tape used on Space Shuttle orbiter radiators requires only half amount of tape of method previously employed. Thermal-control tape consists of layers of FEP, silver, Inconel metal, adhesive, Kapton Film, and second adhesive layer. Method also avoids cost of labor and materials to prepare second test coupon and can be adapted for testing other types of double-faced adhesive tapes in military, industrial and consumer applications.
Secondary electron emission coefficients were measured on FEP-Teflon for normal and oblique incidence in the presence of a normal electric field. Such measurements require knowledge of the electrostatic environment surrounding the specimen, and they require calculation of particle trajectories such that particle impact parameters can be known. A simulation using a conformal mapping, a Green's integral, and a trajectory generator provides the necessary mathematical support for the measurements, which were made with normal fields of 1.5 and 2.7 kV/mm. When incidence is normal and energy exceeds the critical energy, the coefficient is given by (V sub 0/V) to the .58 power, and for oblique incidence this expression may be divided by the cosine of the angle. The parameter V sub 0 is a function of normal field.
The effects of space radiation (electrons and protons), vacuum, and thermal cycling on a variety of solar cell covers are investigated. Cover materials evaluated include glass resins, 2 mil glass applied with adhesives or electrostatically bonded, and thin plastic films of FEP or PFA applied with adhesive. Solar cells were exposed to environmental conditions simulating those encountered in outer space. These test conditions include 1 MeV electrons, 0.5 MeV protons, and thermal cycling in vacuum. During testing the solar cells were monitored for variations in electrical characteristics and structural changes.
Two types of lightweight solar cell modules were prepared. The goal is to achieve a module with a power to weight ratio of 350 watts per kilogram. Both structures use thin cells approximately 50 micrometers thick and glass covers approximately 75 micrometers thick. In one structure the glass is bonded to the module using 93-500 silicone adhesive; while the other relies on heat and pressure bonding using FEP as the adhesive. Specific powers of about 335 watts per kilogram were achieved.
The secondary electron emission coefficient was measured for a charged polymer (FEP-Teflon) with normally and obliquely incident primary electrons. Theories of secondary emission are reviewed and the experimental data is compared to these theories. Results were obtained for angles of incidence up to 60 deg in normal electric fields of 1500 V/mm. Additional measurements in the range from 50 to 70 deg were made in regions where the normal and tangential fields were approximately equal. The initial input angles and measured output point of the electron beam could be analyzed with computer simulations in order to determine the field within the chamber. When the field is known, the trajectories can be calculated for impacting electrons having various energies and angles of incidence. There was close agreement between the experimental results and the commonly assumed theoretical model in the presence of normal electric fields for angles of incidence up to 60 deg. High angle results obtained in the presence of tangential electric fields did not agree with the theoretical models.
