Integration of Data Analytics with Plant System Health Program

This report summarizes the R&D activities of the Plant Health Management (PHM) project during fiscal year 2020 (FY20). This project focuses on the development of methods that integrate component health data and propagate such information at the system level to evaluate system sources of risk. This project development lives in cooperation with the Risk Informed Asset Management (RIAM) project. The RIAM project, in fact, uses the reliability models and data generated by the PHM project to optimize plant operations (e.g., maintenance/replacement schedule, optimal maintenance posture). This year’s activities for the PHM project focused mainly on the development of two classes of models. The first one includes a series of component reliability models which include aging, testing and maintenance. The second class includes a series of system reliability models which focus on the secondary side of exiting U.S. reactors. These models are based on fault tree logic structures such that they can be used by existing plant PRA software. We also started to focus on the management of health data and we tackled this issue in two directions. The first one focuses on the integration of monitor data with simulation models to assess component health. This approach is moving from a classical data based to a model+data based approach with the goal of improving higher component health information. The second direction focuses on linking equipment reliability data (e.g., maintenance/failure reports, component monitoring data) directly to system reliability models using a safety margin based language rather than a probability based language. The main advantage of a safety margin based language is that it can provide to system engineers more tangible information on system/component health and how it propagates to the system level.

Design of RUSL Irradiation Experiment with Free Standing Sample

During FY19, the MIMIC-RUSL TREAT test successfully measured the shift in resonance of a cantilever beam as it underwent a grain restructuring event in the TREAT reactor core. FY20 efforts focused on a new capsule design which would replace the cantilever beam with a free-free beam. The free-free beam configuration eliminates the cantilever boundary condition and enables internal friction measurements. A test capsule was designed which supported the sample beam at the nodal points of the first flexural vibration mode. Initial tests detected the resonance peak but the signal to noise level was not high enough for in-situ measurements. Several detection probes were tested and a significant increase in the signal to noise was achieved. Although adequate signals and clean resonance peaks were measured when the beam was centered, the beam did not self-center when displaced resulting in distorted and inconsistent resonance peaks. It was concluded that the free-free beam approach is likely not suited for in-situ measurements. Measurement of ZGV plate waves is another option for in-situ microstructure monitoring and should be considered for future work.

DuraMAT (Durable Module Materials Consortium) Annual Report FY 2020

The Durable Module Materials Consortium (DuraMAT) launched in November 2016 with five years of funding as part of the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Energy Materials Network. DuraMAT is a multilab consortium, led by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and Sandia National Laboratories (Sandia), with SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) as core research labs. DuraMAT’s overarching goal is to discover, develop, de-risk, and enable the rapid commercialization of improved materials, designs, predictive tests, and models for PV modules that increase performance, extend lifetime, and enable new applications. We work in partnership with our 15-member Industry Advisory Board and the technical management team in DOE’s Solar Energy Technologies Office. This document describes DuraMAT activities in FY20.

BETO 2021 Peer Review - Continuous Enzymatic Hydrolysis Development (CEHD) WBS 2.4.1.101

The Continuous Enzymatic Hydrolysis Development (CEHD) project aims to reduce the cost and commercialization scale-up risks of biorefinery sugar-lignin production through development of a deployable continuous enzymatic hydrolysis (CEH) process. Through the use of external cross flow membrane filtration loops coupled to enzymatic hydrolysis (EH) reactors, pretreated biomass solids and enzymes are retained for reaction while solubilized product sugars are removed in situ, with high extents of conversion achieved through a series of reactor-membrane unit stages. The CEHD project is focused on advancing CEH as a transformational, process-intensified, lower-cost method for producing soluble clarified biomass sugars and insoluble lignin-rich streams than traditional batch enzymatic hydrolysis (BEH). The project's primary objective is to reduce the cost of CEH to be compellingly lower than conventional BEH, 10% lower in year 1 and 20% lower in year 3 (end of project). A related objective is to expand CEH's operating envelope to increase process efficiency. Through more thorough de-risking and demonstration of CEH, in conjunction with building a suite of modeling and optimization tools that allow for more facile rigorous in silico evaluation of novel CEH designs and modalities, this project intends to elevate industry interest in adopting CEH as an improvement over conventional batch processing. This project was merit reviewed in FY20. It's now in its first year of a new 3-year plan spanning FY21-FY23.

The Oscura Experiment

The Oscura experiment will lead the search for low-mass dark matter particles using a very large array of novel silicon Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs) with a threshold of two electrons and with a total exposure of 30 kg-yr. The R&D effort, which began in FY20, is currently entering the design phase with the goal of being ready to start construction in late 2024. Oscura will have unprecedented sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter particles that interact with electrons, probing dark matter-electron scattering for masses down to 500 keV and dark matter being absorbed by electrons for masses down to 1 eV. The Oscura R&D effort has made some significant progress on the main technical challenges of the experiment, of which the most significant are engaging new foundries for the fabrication of the CCD sensors, developing a cold readout solution, and understanding the experimental backgrounds.
