Evaluation of a Laser-Dot Grid-Projection System for Lunar Lander Crater-Shape and Ejecta-Sheet Measurements

Development, testing, and evaluation of an active-illumination laser-dot grid-projection system was performed to evaluate its potential inclusion on an upcoming uncrewed lunar lander mission to the south pole region of the moon. Active illumination may be required for this mission due to the shallow angle of the sun at the landing location, which may cast shadows in the landing region, hindering the stereo camera imaging system’s ability to determine the pre-and post-landing lunar surface/crater shape. Testing includes characterization of the diffractive optical elements used for the grid projection, single-camera tests to determine the imaged laser dot intensity as a function of camera exposure and imaging angle relative to the laser grid projection, laser dot brightness/saturation impact on depth map calculations, angle of imaged laser grid impact on depth map calculations for steep crater edges, impact of density gradients on the depth map calculations, and the feasibility of making measurements of the ejecta sheet.

The velocity and composition of supernova ejecta

In case of the Gum nebula, a pulsar - a presumed neutron star - is believed to be a relic of the supernova explosion. Regardless of the mechanism of the explosion, the velocity distribution and composition of the ejected matter will be roughly the same. The reimploding mass fraction is presumed to be neutron rich. The final composition is thought to be roughly 1/3 iron and 2/3 silicon, with many small fractions of elements from helium to iron. The termination of helium shell burning occurs because the shell is expanded and cooled by radiation stress. The mass fraction of the helium burning shell was calculated.

On the source of flare-ejecta responsible for geomagnetic storms

It is shown that magnetic bottles as the sources of moving metric type 4 bursts are not responsible for the development of geomagnetic storms, despite the fact that shock waves producing type 2 bursts are the sources of the interplanetary shock waves, which produce SSC's on the geomagnetic field. These magnetic bottles, in general, tend to move in the solar envelope with the speed of several hundred Km/sec at most, which is much slower than that of the motion of type 2 radio sources.

Investigations of primary and secondary impact structures on the moon and laboratory experiments to study the ejecta of secondary particles

Young lunar impact structures were investigated by using lunar orbiter, Apollo Metric and panorama photographs. Measurements on particularly homogeneous areas low in secondary craters made possible an expansion of primary crater distribution to small diameters. This is now sure for a range between 20m or = D or = 20km and this indicates that the size and velocity distribution of the impacting bodies in the last 3 billion years has been constant. A numerical approximation in the form of a 7th degree polynomial was obtained for the distribution.
