Best Practices for Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment Installations in the National Parks: Challenges, Lessons Learned, Installation Best Practices, and Recommendations for the National Park Service

In recent years, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the National Park Service (NPS) have partnered to undertake a variety of projects intended to provide electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) to park visitors. Efforts to install charging infrastructure in the national parks have been underway for almost a decade, with installation projects as part of NPS partnerships with several organizations. These projects have been initiated through a variety of funding sources, such as coordinated donations and agreements with other governmental agencies including the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). This report captures challenges, lessons learned, and best practices from recent NPS EVSE projects based on interviews with NPS employees and stakeholders involved in the projects. The report summarizes notable takeaways and makes recommendations to help ensure the success of future charging installation projects. Preserving this information will be valuable for informing and ensuring the success of future charging installation efforts at national parks, as well as for organizations outside of NPS. Note that this report focuses on light-duty plug-in electric vehicle (EV) projects, though NPS is also pursuing medium- and heavy-duty EV efforts.

Fuel Cell Powered Airport GSE (Ground Support Equipment) Deployment

The Fuel Cell Powered Airport GSE (Ground Support Equipment) Deployment Project was initiated in 2013 between Plug Power and U. S. Department of Energy Fuel Cell Technologies Office (DOE). The project plan included development and deployment of fifteen fuel cell powered units for two years at an airport to understand the feasibility and economic viability of hydrogen powered GSE. Project participants were the Department of Energy, Plug Power, and FedEx. The Memphis, TN airport is the hub of FedEx’s freight operation and was selected as the site for the demonstration portion of the project.

Hourly Load Profile Dataset for Electric Airport Ground Support Equipment in the United States

Currently, there are limited data on the magnitude and timing of electricity demand from electric ground support equipment (eGSE) across U.S. airports. To address this gap, this study presents a modeling approach for estimating hourly annual electricity demand from eGSE at the 50 largest U.S. commercial airports. These datasets, accessible at data.nrel.gov/submissions/279, provide critical insights into the potential grid impacts and electricity demand associated with eGSE adoption.

Hourly Load Profile Dataset for Electric Port Cargo Handling Equipment in the United States

Historically, ports have relied on fossil fuels, particularly diesel, as their primary energy source. Transitioning to electric cargo handling equipment (eCHE) offers a promising solution, as this relatively mature technology eliminates tailpipe emissions, reduces harmful airborne particulates, lowers noise pollution, and supports decarbonization. This study develops an initial estimation of hourly electricity demand for eCHE at the top 25 container ports (by tonnage) in the United States. These datasets, accessible at data.nrel.gov/submissions/281, provide valuable insights into the electricity demand patterns and potential grid impacts associated with widespread eCHE adoption, forming a foundation for future refinement based on stakeholder feedback.

Equipment Assessment Guide: A Technical Inspection and Hardening Guide for Devices in Power Grid Operations

This Equipment Assessment Guide, developed by Idaho National Laboratory (INL), provides a comprehensive framework designed to enhance the security of operational technology (OT) devices within power grid operations. The guide outlines essential steps for asset owners to conduct technical inspections and harden vulnerable hardware and firmware components commonly found in embedded systems. It focuses on components frequently targeted by cyber threats, offering valuable identification techniques for locating and recognizing critical components on devices. Additionally, the guide presents recommended secure configurations aimed at minimizing exposure and reinforcing defenses, along with impact analysis that highlights the potential consequences for grid operations if components are compromised. By implementing the recommendations outlined in this guide, asset owners can significantly enhance their cybersecurity posture, reduce the attack surface of field-deployed devices, and improve the resilience of grid services against emerging cyber threats.
