Updates and Validation for the n+ 63,65 Cu Cross Sections [Slides]

The RRR and URR parameters for 63,65 Cu have been optimized to transmission and capture data. Several data sets have been newly incorporated in this evaluation. The angular distribution parameters have been adopted from differential measurements, as was done in ENDF/B-V. The performance of this evaluation in the integral benchmark calculations is favorable, and the validation is ongoing.

Expanding Benchmarks for Nuclear Data Validation [Slides]

The presentation discusses benchmarking in comparison to experimental truth, the integral experiments that were performed, and that benchmarks are evaluated experiments. It also discusses validation testing, and that the ultimate goal of the validation end product is to improve evaluated nuclear data for applications It does state that validation highlights errors in the Nuclear Data Pipeline that affect applications, for example: Missing Cd Capture Gammas in ENDF/B-VII.1. It acknowledges that additional types of experiments are needed to test data used in applications, and that validation experiments do not have to be complicated and expensive. The presentation also discusses different types of measurements including activation foil and fission chamber measurements, reactor kinetics measurements, and subcritical measurements. The presentation concludes with an experiment summary and states that all applications need validation.

Recent Testing of ENDF/B-VIII.0 at ORNL [Slides]

This presentation provides an overview of comparisons of ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 and uses VALID suite to test >600 cases with ENDF/B-VII.1 and ENDF/B-VIII.0 in KENO V.a/KENO-VI, although a limited number of cases have been tested with TSUNAMI. It provides a results summary of KENO V.a/KENO-VI with a pooled results summary. The presentation also discusses changes for LCT experiments, MCT experiments, MST experiments, and PST experiments. A few words about graphite are also provided and the presentation states that graphite performance investigated across ENDF/B-VII.0, ENDF/B-VII.1, and ENDF/B-VIII.0 for MSR and HTGR models. A brief summary of the results is presented to make sure the Validation Committee is aware of the work. Also presented is an Eigenvalue comparison with a graphite moderated system, and comparison between an HTR-10 pebble model ENDF/B-VII.1 vs. ENDF/B-VIII.0, which provides different graphite data. In conclusion, ORNL has recently completed a comparison of ENDF/B-VIII.0 and ENDF/B-VII.1 using the VALID library. Work is also being performed for advanced reactor applications. Other efforts on-going and they are also trying to investigate more intermediate spectrum cases.

140,142 Cerium Resolved Resonance Region Evaluation [Slides]

The presentation covers an overview of 140,142 Ce Isotopes, including new evaluations of 140,142 Ce that were requested by the Hanford Plutonium Finishing plant to the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. It also discusses current ENDF/B-VIII.0 evaluation, which has an error in the 1-2 keV range. It was evaluated using multi-level Breit-Wigner and 142Ce has room for extending resolved resonance region current upper limit from 13 keV. The presentation also discusses new transmission and capture measurements of nat Ce and 142 Ce from Klaus Guber. It also states that no known integral experiments prominently feature Cerium.

Technical note on 16 O(n,α) evaluation (Rev. 3)

The evaluated 16 O(n,α) cross sections in the ENDF/B-VIII.0 nuclear data library remain uncertain because of systematic discrepancies between measured data. The evaluation relies heavily on the inverse reaction, and, in particular, it relies on the recently measured 13 C(α,n) 16 O cross sections reported by Harissopulos in 2005. These cross section values are systematically lower than those previously reported by Bair in 1973. This technical note briefly describes and shows, on the basis of the available experimental information, that the two sets of measured cross sections are consistent

Data Testing with Zero Power Reactor (ZPR), Zero Power Physics Reactor (ZPPR), and New Thermal Epithermal eXperiments (TEX) Plutonium Benchmarks [Slides]

This presentation states that new TSLs in ENDF/B-VIII.0 will reduce the overprediction of the library for the most moderated cases. The differences between VII.1 and VIII.0 are driven by the 239 Pu changes and are consistently higher for all configurations. The VIII.0 239 Pu thermal cross sections were specifically adjusted lower to better predict plutonium thermal solutions criticality benchmarks, yet they overpredict the TEX thermal configurations, moderated by PE. Other, smaller differences have been seen for 240 Pu and 56 Fe. PMM-002 has shown utility in testing cross sections over a wide range of neutron energies.

NCSP Analytical Methods Subtask 3, AMPX Development and Maintenance, and NCSP Nuclear Data Subtask 6, SAMMY Modernization

The modernization of SAMMY continued with the removal of all container array access for the main program. The container array was used due to the computer limitations at the time of the initial writing of SAMMY, but it prevented the use of some modern code testing options. Additionally, the authors continued to make the code more modular by shifting the storage of the energy grid and the covariance information to C++ storage, thus allowing for better unit testing and the elimination of scratch files. For AMPX, the authors continued to implement the new Evaluated Nuclear Data File format to allow AMPX to read new evaluations as they become available.

DOE/NNSA Nuclear Criticality Safety Program – Brief Overview [Slides]

This presentation discusses nuclear data measurements and evaluation work for the NCSP. The objective of the NCSP is to provide measured and evaluated thermal, resonance, unresolved resonance, and fast region cross section data to address the priority NCSP nuclear data needs. It also discusses its vision which is to address multiple Nuclear Data 5- and 10-year goals and attributes identified in the NCSP. The intended final product is for rigorous ENDF/B evaluations to be produced from cross section measurements and analyses. It also discusses NCSP integral experiments and differential experiments in addition to NCSP support of SCALE in the future.

ORNL neutron cross section measurements and evaluations for improved nuclear data [Slides]

This presentation discusses the nuclear data measurements and evaluation work for NCSP, including its objective which is to provide measured and evaluated thermal, resonance, unresolved resonance, and fast region cross-section data to address the priority NCSP nuclear data needs. It also discusses its vision which addresses multiple Nuclear Data 5- and 10-year goals and attributes identified in the NCSP Vision. The intended final product is that rigorous ENDF/B evaluations will be produced from cross section measurements and analyses. Measurement work effort focused on NCSP priorities by NCSP Nuclear Data Advisory Group (NDAG) can be found in Appendix B of the 5-year plan. NCSP measurements program at JRC is now part of the DOE/Euratom agreement, Action Sheet 66.
