Dissociative excitation of vacuum ultraviolet emission features by electron impact on molecular gases. 3: CO2

Vacuum ultraviolet multiplets of C I, C II, and O I were produced by electron impact of CO2. Absolute emission cross sections for these multiplets were measured from threshold to 350 eV. The electrostatically focussed electron gun used in this series of experiments is described in detail. The atomic multiplets which were produced by dissociative excitation of CO2 and the cross sections at 100 eV are given. The dependence of the excitation functions on electron energy shows that these multiplets are produced by electric-dipole-allowed transitions in CO2.

Interpolation constants for calculation of transmittance and rate of dissociation of molecular oxygen in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere

Values of band oscillator strengths and rotational line widths for the Schumann-Runge band system have been used to derive interpolation constants from which the transmittance and rate of dissociation of molecular oxygen can be calculated. These constants, valid for temperatures between 150 and 300 K and for column densities between 1 x 10 to the 17th power/cm sq and 7 x 10 to the 24th power/cm sq, cover the wavelength range 1750 and 2050A.

Dissociative excitation of vacuum-ultraviolet emission features by electron impact on molecular gases. II.

Atomic-nitrogen multiplets have been excited. The excitation cross sections have been measured over the energy range from threshold to 350 eV. The transition arrays, mean wavelengths, and cross sections for dissociative excitation of the multiplets at 100 eV are presented. The experiment featured a monoenergetic electron beam which was incident on a quasi-static gas target. Vacuum-ultraviolet emission features were isolated by a normal-incidence monochromator, and multiscaling pulse-counting techniques were used.

Absolute cross section for the production of O/super 5 S super 0/ by electron impact dissociation of O2.

Estimation of the aeronomically important cross section for the production of O(super 5 S super 0) by electron impact dissociation of O2 on the basis of recently published work of several groups. The cross section reaches a maximum value of 7 x 10 to the minus 18th sq cm plus or minus 50% at about 100 eV. The assumptions made in arriving at this cross section suggest several experiments which might be performed to further refine this estimate.

Dissociation-excitation reactions of argon metastables with carbon dioxide.

Results of a study showing that a metastable argon-carbon dioxide reaction results in dissociation of carbon dioxide and electronic excitation of one of the products, carbon monoxide or oxygen. A flow system using a 2450-MHz discharge was used to produce metastable argon atoms. Metastable argon in the afterglow was confirmed by adding nitrogen to the afterglow. Without addition of carbon dioxide no argon line emission, or any other emission, is observed from the reaction zone. Absence of argon line emission produced by recombination indicates the absence of charged species.

Photodissociation of CS2 in the vacuum ultraviolet - Determination of bond dissociation energy from the lowest vibrational level of the ground state CS2.

Photolysis in the vacuum ultraviolet results almost exclusively in the production of S(super-3)P atoms, which is in apparent violation of spin conservation. The threshold energy of incident photons required to produce fluorescence was used to calculate the bond dissociation energy (from the lowest vibrational level of the ground state), and the result agrees with the value previously derived from the photoionization of CS2. The fluorescence excitation spectrum shows peaks corresponding to Rydberg series I and II, indicating that the observed photodissociation of CS2 in the vacuum ultraviolet is mainly the result of predissociation from Rydberg states. The absorption coefficient of CS2 was measured in the region of 1200 to 1400 A.
