Hetero-site Double Core Ionization Energies with Sub-electronvolt Accuracy from Delta-Coupled-Cluster Calculations

Benchmark scalar-relativistic delta-coupled-cluster calculations of hetero-site double core ionization energies of small molecules containing second-row elements are reported. The present study has focused on the high-spin triplet components of two-site double core-ionized states, which are single reference in character and consistent with the use of standard coupledcluster methods. Contributions to computed double core ionization energies from electron-correlation and basis-set effects as well as corrections to the core-valence separation approximation have been analyzed. Furthermore, on the basis of systematic convergence of computational results with respect to these effects, delta-coupled-cluster calculations have been shown to be capable of providing accurate double core ionization energies with remaining errors estimated to be below 0.3 eV, and thus they are recommended for use to facilitate experimental studies of two-site double core-ionized states that are involved in X-ray pump/X-ray probe studies of electronic and molecular dynamics following inner shell ionization or excitation.

Influences on Discharge Partitioning on a Large River Delta: Case Study of the Mississippi-Atchafalaya Diversion, 1926-1950

The modern Mississippi River (M.R.) Delta is plumbed by the Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers, setting water and sediment dispersal pathways for Earth’s fifth-largest river system. The Atchafalaya River’s (A.R.) partial annexation of discharge from the M.R., particularly between 1926 and 1950, prompted warnings of a rapid river avulsion and the construction of the Old River Control Structure to regulate flow. Natural and anthropogenic causes of this discharge annexation are difficult to disentangle. Here, we develop and validate a hydrodynamic model of flow partitioning through the historic channel network. We then isolate how several key changes to the system affected discharge partitioning and stage at the A.R.-M.R. diversion. Simulations show that erosion of the upper A.R. can account for 73% of the water discharge increase. Dredging in the lower A.R. between 1932 and 1950 can account for 35% of the water discharge increase, and was also an important control on shear stress distribution. The lower M.R. was slightly erosional during this period, and therefore hindered the A.R. discharge increase. Significant lacustrine delta deposition in A.R. had little effect on partitioning. These findings highlight the importance of A.R. enlargement processes on avulsion dynamics at this site. Given the essential nature of this river junction to the society, transportation, and commerce of the United States, improved attribution of discharge increases may lead to future management strategies that are broadly impactful.

Conductivity and size quantization effects in semiconductor $$\delta$$-layer systems

Abstract We present an open-system quantum-mechanical 3D real-space study of the conduction band structure and conductive properties of two semiconductor systems, interesting for their beyond-Moore and quantum computing applications: phosphorus $$\delta$$ δ -layers and P $$\delta$$ δ -layer tunnel junctions in silicon. In order to evaluate size quantization effects on the conductivity, we consider two principal cases: nanoscale finite-width structures, used in transistors, and infinitely-wide structures, electrical properties of which are typically known experimentally. For devices widths $$W<10$$ W < 10 nm, quantization effects are strong and it is shown that the number of propagating modes determines not only the conductivity, but the distinctive spatial distribution of the current-carrying electron states. For $$W>10$$ W > 10 nm, the quantization effects practically vanish and the conductivity tends to the infinitely-wide device values. For tunnel junctions, two distinct conductivity regimes are predicted due to the strong conduction band quantization.

Tipping points of Mississippi Delta marshes due to accelerated sea-level rise

Coastal marshes are threatened by relative sea-level (RSL) rise, yet recent studies predict marsh survival even under the high rates of RSL rise expected later in this century. However, because these studies are mostly based on short-term records, uncertainty persists about the longer-term vulnerability of coastal marshes. We present an 8500-year-long marsh record from the Mississippi Delta, showing that at rates of RSL rise exceeding 6 to 9 mm year –1 , marsh conversion into open water occurs in about 50 years. At rates of RSL rise exceeding ~3 mm year –1 , marsh drowning occurs within a few centuries. Because present-day rates of global sea-level rise already surpass this rate, submergence of the remaining ~15,000 km 2 of marshland in coastal Louisiana is probably inevitable. RSL-driven tipping points for marsh drowning vary geographically, and those for the Mississippi Delta may be lower than elsewhere. Nevertheless, our findings highlight the need for consideration of longer time windows in determining the vulnerability of coastal marshes worldwide.

This is the AmeriFlux Management Project (AMP) created FLUXNET-1F version of the carbon flux data for the site CA-DB2 Delta Burns Bog 2. This is the FLUXNET version of the carbon flux data for the site CA-DB2 Delta Burns Bog 2 produced by applying the standard ONEFlux (1F) software. Site Description - The Burns Bog Ecological Conservancy Area (BBECA) in the metro Vancouver area presents a unique opportunity for insight into greenhouse gas dynamics post restoration. The bog was significantly disturbed for peat mining, development and agriculture over the last century, however since 2005 there has been both active restoration and natural regeneration occurring within the bog. Hence areas of bog are at varying stages of ecological recovery. This site is a Pine-Sphagnum low shrub site characteristic of a later successional stage. Conversely, CA-DBB, another AmeriFlux site in BBECA, is a Beakrush-Sphagnum site characteristic of an earlier successional stage.

Delta modulation

The conclusions of the design research of the song adaptive delta modulator are presented for source encoding voice signals. The variation of output SNR vs input signal power/when 8, 9, and 10 bit internal arithmetic is employed. Voice intelligibility tapes to test the 10-bit system are used. An analysis of a delta modulator is also presented designed to minimize the in-band rms error. This is accomplished by frequency shaping the error signal in the modulator prior to hard limiting. The result is a significant increase in the output SNR measured after low pass filtering.

Flow field predictions for a slab delta wing at incidence

Theoretical results are presented for the structure of the hypersonic flow field of a blunt slab delta wing at moderately high angle of attack. Special attention is devoted to the interaction between the boundary layer and the inviscid entropy layer. The results are compared with experimental data. The three-dimensional inviscid flow is computed numerically by a marching finite difference method. Attention is concentrated on the windward side of the delta wing, where detailed comparisons are made with the data for shock shape and surface pressure distributions. Surface streamlines are generated, and used in the boundary layer analysis. The three-dimensional laminar boundary layer is computed numerically using a specially-developed technique based on small cross-flow in streamline coordinates. In the rear sections of the wing the boundary layer decreases drastically in the spanwise direction, so that it is still submerged in the entropy layer at the centerline, but surpasses it near the leading edge. Predicted heat transfer distributions are compared with experimental data.

Chemical nonequilibrium effects on the flow in the windward plane of symmetry of a blunted delta orbiter

The extent, and some of the consequences, of nonequilibrium effects in the inviscid orbiter flow field are examined. Calculations have been made for the reacting flow along selected streamlines in the windward plane of symmetry of a blunted delta shape representative of a shuttle orbiter. An approximate model of the pressure field in the windward plane of symmetry of a blunted delta wing was constructed from wind tunnel measurements of the body surface pressure distribution and approximate calculations of the shock shape and streamline locations. Numerical solutions for the flow along streamlines were obtained for this pressure distribution, and solutions were obtained for both equilibrium and finite-reaction rate, nonequilibrium chemical reactions. Since the streamtube solutions are much easier to compute than fully three-dimensional, reacting flows, results were obtained for a wide range of conditions. The validity of this approach is based on the assumptions that the pressure field is insensitive to nonequilibrium effects and that the flow along streamlines is quasi-one dimensional. Numerical solutions have been used to verify this approach for other blunted slender shapes such as spherically blunted cones.

Effects of leading-edge camber on low-speed characteristics of slender delta wings

Wind-tunnel studies have been conducted to determine the effects of leading-edge camber on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of a thin, sharp-edge 74 deg delta wing. The results include force and moment measurements, pressure distributions, and flow visualization patterns determined from oil flow, tuft and water vapor observations. The study indicated that leading-edge camber near the apex is effective in controlling the pitch-up tendency of slender delta wings.

Noncoplanar minimum delta V two-impulse and three-impulse orbital transfer from a regressing oblate earth assembly parking ellipse onto a flyby trans-Mars asymptotic velocity vector.

Comparison of two-impulse and three-impulse orbital transfer, using data from a 63-case numerical study. For each case investigated for which coplanarity of the regressing assembly parking ellipse was attained with the target asymptotic velocity vector, a two-impulse maneuver (or a one-impulse equivalent) was found for which the velocity expenditure was within 1% of a reference absolute minimum lower bound. Therefore, for the coplanar cases, use of a minimum delta-V three-impulse maneuver afforded scant improvement in velocity penalty. However, as the noncoplanarity of the parking ellipse and the target asymptotic velocity vector increased, there was a significant increase in the superiority of minimum delta-V three-impulse maneuvers for slowing the growth of velocity expenditure. It is concluded that a multiple-impulse maneuver should be contemplated if nonnominal launch conditions could occur.

Delta wing separation can dominate shuttle dynamics.

The unsteady aerodynamics of the delta wing, high cross range, shuttle orbiter have been investigated. Three potentially dangerous flow separation phenomena involving the delta wing have been identified, each of which could seriously compromise the flight dynamics. They are (1) leeside shock-induced separation, (2) sudden leading-edge stall, and (3) the subsonic leading-edge vortex and vortex burst. Each of these unsteady flow phenomena can be triggered by control surface deflection. Furthermore, wing stall and control-induced separation effects interact with the relatively large fuselage, causing simultaneous alteration of the lateral-directional stability. Trajectory shaping may be the most powerful means of dealing with these stall effects.

Delta-90 Interplanetary Monitoring Platform-H (IMP-H) flash flight report

The Delta-90 launch vehicle and the IMP-H spacecraft were successfully launched from Pad B, Complex 17, Cape Kennedy Air Force Station, Florida, at 2120:00.559 EDT on September 22, 1972. The countdown proceeded smoothly to liftoff with no major difficulties or unscheduled holds. The Delta-90/IMP-H were launched on a pad azimuth of 115 degrees, the vehicle ten rolled to 95 degrees from the north placing the spacecraft in a highly elliptical transfer orbit. Firing the spacecraft kickmotor at 1136 EDT, September 25, 1972, injected the spacecraft into its final desirable near-circular orbit approximately half way between the planet earth and its moon. Vehicle performance of all stages appeared nominal with all sequenced events occurring at the expected times. Data acquisition from all range stations was very good. Damage to the launch pad caused by liftoff was nominal.
