Structure, electronic and magnetic characterization, and calculated electronic structures of two oxyhalide hexagonal perovskites

Herein we report the crystal structures, initial magnetic and charge transport characterization, and calculated electronic structures of the hexagonal oxyhalide perovskites, Ba 7 Ru 4 O 15 Cl 2 and Ba 7 Ru 4 O 15 Br 2 . The experimental information is obtained through the study of single crystals. Face-sharing Ru O 6 octahedra form Ru 2 O 9 dimers in a layered triangular geometry in these materials; minor amounts of off-magnetic-site structural disorder are present in our crystals. Both are magnetically isotropic, with 2.5 μB/mol-Ru, Curie-Weiss theta –185 K, and 2.9 μB/mol-Ru, Curie-Weiss theta –168 K, respectively. Broad features in the magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity associated with magnetic ordering (at 35 and 37 K, respectively) are observed. The charge transport band gaps are 0.03 eV for the oxychloride and 0.006 eV for the oxybromide. There is no gap at the Fermi level for either of these compounds in density-functional theory electronic structure calculations.

A Four‐Coordinate Pr 4+ Imidophosphorane Complex

Abstract The imidophosphorane ligand, [NP t Bu 3 ] − ( t Bu= tert ‐butyl), enables isolation of a pseudo‐tetrahedral, tetravalent praseodymium complex, [Pr 4+ (NP t Bu 3 ) 4 ] ( 1‐Pr ), which is characterized by a suite of physical characterization methods including single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance, and L 3 ‐edge X‐ray near‐edge spectroscopies. Variable‐temperature direct‐current magnetic susceptibility data, supported by multiconfigurational quantum chemical calculations, demonstrate that the electronic structure diverges from the isoelectronic Ce 3+ analogue, driven by increased crystal field. The four‐coordinate environment around Pr 4+ in 1‐Pr , which is unparalleled in reported extended solid systems, provides a unique opportunity to study the interplay between crystal field splitting and spin‐orbit coupling in a molecular tetravalent lanthanide within a pseudo‐tetrahedral coordination geometry.

Synthesis of Non-Aqueous Neptunium(III) Halide Solvates from NpO 2

We report two Np(III) halides, NpI 3 (THF) 4 and NpBr 3 (THF) 4 , have been prepared and isolated in high yields as described in this work. Starting with neptunia (NpO 2 ), NpCl 4 (DME) 2 was first generated in an updated, higher yielding synthesis than what was previously reported by using HCl/HF. This material was then reduced with KC 8 , followed by subsequent ligand exchange, to generate NpBr 3 (THF) 4 and NpI 3 -(THF) 4 . Full characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 1 H NMR spectroscopy and electronic absorption spectroscopy confirmed the molecular formulas and oxidation states. These trivalent materials are straightforward to synthesize and can be used as starting materials for non-aqueous Np(III) chemistry, obviating the need for rare and restricted Np metal and elemental halogens.

Synthesis of a new 1,2,4-triazine derived Azidoxime

A 1,2,4-triazine based azidoxime was formed via the substitution of a chloroxime (3) with sodium azide in ethanol. This compound was characterized via single-crystal X-ray diffraction. This material has a calculated density of 1.746 g•cm –1 and is less sensitive to impact, spark, and friction, as compared to PETN and RDX. The dehydrated material has a calculated density of 1.823 g•cm –1 and the detonation pressure and velocity of 4 are calculated to be 29.1 GPa and 8.67 km•s –1 , respectively.

Microstructure-Based Estimation of Strength and Ductility Distributions for \(\alpha +\beta \) Titanium Alloys

Titanium alloys are processed to develop a wide range of microstructure configurations and therefore material properties. While these properties are typically measured experimentally, a framework for property prediction could greatly enhance alloy design and manufacturing. In this work, a microstructure-sensitive framework is presented for the prediction of strength and ductility as well as estimates of the bounds in variability for these properties. The framework explicitly considers distributions of microstructure via new approaches for instantiation of structure in synthetic samples. The parametric evaluation strategy, including the finite element simulation package FEpX, is used to create and test virtual polycrystalline samples to evaluate the variability bounds of mechanical properties in Ti-6Al-4V. Critical parameters for the property evaluation framework are provided by measurements of single crystal properties and advanced characterization of microstructure and slip system strengths in 2D and 3D. Property distributions for yield strength and ductility are presented, along with the validation and verification steps undertaken. Comparisons between strain localization and slip activity in virtual samples and in experimental grain-scale strain measurements are also discussed.

Numerical modeling of electromagnetic field spatiotemporal evolution to evaluate the effects on calcium carbonate crystallization

Calcium carbonate (CaCO 3 ) scaling is a significant impediment to water systems. Electromagnetic field (EMF) treatment is a promising approach to control scaling owing to its simplicity and low or no energy requirements. However, the underlying mechanisms by which EMF impacts CaCO 3 crystallization remain unclear due to the challenges in measuring the EMFs in feed solutions and the lack of a fundamental understanding of the applied EMFs and the observed physicochemical phenomena. To fill this knowledge gap, a high-fidelity COMSOL model was first developed to simulate EMFs in bulk solutions for three alternating current-induced EMF devices with different configurations and properties. These were then integrated with experimental data to unveil the underlying mechanism by which applied EMFs alter the physicochemical processes. The study revealed that even low-strength EMFs (e.g., electric fields <0.15 V/m and magnetic fields <0.03 mT) promoted CaCO 3 precipitation in bulk solutions. The electric fields created by these EMF devices resulted in higher Lorentz force compared to their induced magnetic fields. In conclusion, the methodology of this study offers the capability to predict the effectiveness of different EMF devices in facilitating crystallization processes, and these mechanistic insights lay the foundation for the smart design of EMF devices for diverse water treatment applications.

Interfacial intermixing and anti-phase boundaries in GaP/Si(0 0 1) heterostructures

Epitaxial GaP/Si heterostructures grown by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) and migration-enhanced epitaxy (MEE) have been studied, primarily using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (AC-STEM). Atomically-resolved structure images, which are sensitive to atomic-column intensity revealed the detailed geometry of antiphase boundaries that were both parallel and also inclined to the growth direction. The polar/non-polar GaP/Si interfaces were neither atomically flat laterally nor abrupt vertically. Measurements of intensity profiles using both bright-field and dark-field AC-STEM images, as well as chemically-sensitive g 002 dark-field imaging, indicated substantial interfacial intermixing, which increased significantly from ~1.3 nm (MEE growth at 440 °C) to ~2.1 nm (MBE growth at 600 °C). The finite interface width will impact theoretical predictions of charge imbalance and strong electric fields across the heterointerface.

Functional properties of Yttrium Iron Garnett thin films on graphene-coated Gd 3 Ga 5 O 12 for remote epitaxial transfer

Remote epitaxial growth via a graphene interlayer and subsequent mechanical exfoliation of a free-standing membrane is a recently developed technique used to transfer complex oxide thin films onto non-native substrates to form heterogeneously integrated structures for various device applications. One such oxide is Yttrium Iron Garnet (YIG), a material of choice for a wide range of magnetoelectric and spintronic devices owing to its strong magnetic properties and low microwave losses. YIG is predominantly grown on lattice matched Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) substrates, but by utilizing the remote epitaxy technique, high quality YIG films can be transferred from GGG onto another substrate such as piezoelectric Lithium Niobate (LN). Mechanical strain coupling between the layers and magnetostrictive nature of YIG would allow for the investigation of the interplay in YIG/LN structures leading to the design of novel frequency agile magneto-acoustic devices. In this study functional properties of a YIG film grown using PLD on graphene-coated GGG substrate were investigated and compared to traditional YIG on GGG. Both materials were characterized in terms of crystal structure, surface morphology, FMR and Gilbert damping, and Raman and XAS spectroscopy. Further, it was found that YIG on graphene-coated GGG exhibits significantly higher microwave losses than standard YIG on GGG (FMR linewidth 30.9 vs 2.1 Oe at 10 GHz, and Gilbert damping coefficient 15.4x10 -4 vs 3.4x10 -4 respectively), which was attributed to increased concentration of Fe 2+ cations in YIG/Graphene/GGG. While the damping is higher in these studied films compared to YIG grown directly on GGG, the resulting properties are still very favorable compared to many other competing materials which can be grown without the need for lattice matched substrates, such as metallic ferromagnets.

Near-IR Luminescence Tuning in a Series of Chalcogenophene Carboxylate-Decorated Neodymium Dimers

Here, the solvothermal synthesis of a series of Nd dimers decorated with various chalcogenophene carboxylates and 2,2':6',2"-terpyridine of the general formula, [Nd 2 (µ-XC 5 H 3 O 2 ) 2 (XC 5 H 3 O 2 ) 4 (N 3 C 15 H 11 ) 2 (H 2 O) 2 ] where X = O, S, Se, and Te, is reported. The solid-state structures were characterized using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD) and all the complexes are isomorphous, despite substitution of the heterocyclic chalcogen; phase purity was confirmed via powder X-ray diffraction (pXRD). Vibrational spectroscopy was collected and correlations between chalcogen identity and the binding strength of the carboxylate groups of the chalcogenophene ligands with each metal center were shown to be independent of chalcogen identity. All four complexes displayed Nd(III)-based near-IR luminescence and exhibited ligand-sensitized emission. Varying the chalcogenophene chromophore enabled tuning of the sensitizing triplet state energy level, as evidenced by an 8-fold increase in the sensitization of the TeCA-decorated dimer relative to the other chalcogenophene congeners. This behavior was rationalized by comparing the Nd(III) acceptor and ligand donor states across the series. The donor triplet state of each ligand was estimated via low-temperature (77 K) phosphorescence measurements from 1:1 mixtures with Gd(III); these were found to be 24,631 cm –1 for furan-2-carboxylic acid (FCA), 23,764 cm –1 for thiophene-2-carboxylic acid (TCA), 22,548 cm –1 for selenophene-2-carboxylic acid (SeCA), and 21,186 cm –1 for tellurophene-2-carboxylic acid (TeCA). The greater sensitization efficiency of TeCA is the result of well-matched ligand donor and metal acceptor levels and thus suppression of nonradiative back-energy transfer. More broadly, triplet energy level information for these ligands serves as a guide for future application to other target metals based on the electronic properties necessary to effect efficient sensitization.

Ultrafast Oxygen Conduction in Sillén Oxychlorides

Oxygen ion conductors are crucial for enhancing the efficiency of various clean energy technologies, including fuel cells, solid oxide air batteries, electrolyzers, membranes, sensors, and more. In this study, a structure-similarity analysis of ≈62k oxygen-containing compounds identified the MBi 2 O 4 X (M = rare-earth element, X = halogen element) family as promising candidates for fast oxygen transport. Among these, LaBi 2 O 4 Cl is found as an ultrafast oxygen conductor with an ultralow migration barrier of 0.1 eV based on ab initio studies. Its 2D layered structure, featuring a “triple fluorite” layer, supports diffusion of both oxygen vacancies and interstitials. In addition to vacancy diffusion with a 0.1 eV barrier, ab initio studies show interstitial diffusion exhibits a modest barrier of 0.6–0.8 eV. Frenkel pairs are found to be the dominant defects in intrinsic LaBi 2 O 4 Cl, facilitating significant vacancy-mediated oxygen diffusion at elevated temperatures. With 2.8% oxygen vacancies, LaBi 2 O 4 Cl is predicted to achieve a conductivity of 0.3 S/cm at 25 °C in a single crystal. Experimental synthesis and characterization of polycrystalline LaBi 2 O 4 Cl and Sr-doped LaBi 2 O 4 Cl revealed conductivity exceeding that of YSZ and LSGM below 400 °C, with lower activation energies, achieving a total conductivity of 0.1−0.2 mS/cm at 300 °C. Here, while these results confirm its potential of fast oxygen transport, we suggest further experimental optimization of LaBi 2 O 4 Cl, including aliovalent doping and microstructure refinement, could significantly enhance its performance, facilitating fast oxygen conduction approaching room temperature.

A Third Generation Potentially Bifunctional Trithiol Chelate, Its nat,1XX Sb(III) Complex, and Selective Chelation of Radioantimony ( 119 Sb) from Its Sn Target

The therapeutic potential of the Meitner-Auger- and conversion-electron emitting radionuclide 119 Sb remains unexplored because of the difficulty of incorporating it into biologically targeted compounds. To address this challenge, we report the development of 119 Sb production from electroplated tin cyclotron targets and its complexation by a novel trithiol chelate. Here, the chelation reaction occurs in harsh solvent conditions even in the presence of large quantities of tin, which are necessary for production on small, low energy (16 MeV) cyclotrons. The 119 Sb-trithiol complex has high stability and can be purified by HPLC. The third generation trithiol chelate and the analogous stable nat Sb-trithiol compound were synthesized and characterized, including by single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses.

An Aluminum-Based Metal–Organic Cage for Cesium Capture

Metal–organic cages are a class of supramolecular structures that often require the careful selection of organic linkers and metal nodes. Of this class, few examples of metal–organic cages exist where the nodes are composed of main group metals. Herein, we have prepared an aluminum-based metal–organic cage, H 8 [Al 8 (pdc) 8 (OAc) 8 O 4 ] (Al-pdc-AA), using inexpensive and commercially available materials. The cage formation was achieved via solvothermal self-assembly of solvated aluminum and pyridine-dicarboxylic linkers in the presence of a capping agent, acetic acid. The obtained supramolecular structure was characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), thermogravimetric analysis, and NMR spectroscopy. Based on crystal structure and computational analyses, the cage has a 3.7 Å diameter electron-rich cavity suitable for the binding of cations such as cesium (ionic radius of 1.69 Å). Here, the host–guest interactions were probed with 1 H and 133 Cs NMR spectroscopy in DMSO, where at low concentrations, Cs + binds to Al-pdc-AA in a 1:1 ratio. The binding site was identified from the crystal structure of CsH 7 [Al 8 (pdc) 8 (OAc) 8 O 4 ] (Cs + Al-pdc-AA), and a binding affinity of ~10 6 –10 7 M –1 was determined from NMR titration experiments. The Al-pdc-AA showed improved selectivity for cesium binding over alkali metal cations (Cs + > Rb + > K + >> Na + ~ Li + ). Collectively, the study reports a novel aluminum cage that can serve as a promising host for efficient and selective cesium removal.

Homoleptic Uranium–Bis(acyl)phosphide Complexes

Here, the first uranium bis(acyl)phosphide (BAP) complexes were synthesized from the reaction between sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide (Na( mes BAP)) or sodium bis(2,4,6-triisopropylbenzoyl)phosphide (Na( tripp BAP)) and UI 3 (1,4-dioxane) 1.5 . Thermally stable, homoleptic BAP complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy, when appropriate, for the elucidation of the electronic structure and bonding of these complexes. EPR spectroscopy revealed that the BAP ligands on the uranium center retain a significant amount of electron density. The EPR spectrum of the trivalent U( tripp BAP) 3 has a rhombic signal near g = 2 (g 1 = 2.03; g 2 = 2.01; and g 3 = 1.98) that is consistent with the EPR-observed unpaired electron being located in a molecular orbital that appears ligand-derived. However, upon warming the complex to room temperature, no resonance was observed, indicating the presence of uranium character.

Two Neptunium(III) Mellitate Coordination Polymers: Completing the Series Np–Cf of Trans-Uranic An(III) Mellitates

For this work, two neptunium(III) mellitates, 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 9 ·1.5H 2 O (Np-1α) and 237 Np 2 (mell)(H 2 O) 8 ·2H 2 O (Np-1β), have been synthesized from 237 NpCl 4 (dme) 2 by reduction with KC 8 and subsequent reaction with an aqueous solution of mellitic acid (H 6 mell). Characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography and UV–vis–NIR spectroscopy confirms that the neptunium is in its +3 oxidation state and both polymorphs are isostructural to the previously reported plutonium mellitates. Of the two morphologies, Np-1α is indefinitely stable in air, while Np-1β slowly oxidizes over several months. This is due to the change in the energy of the metal-ligand charge-transfer absorption exhibited by these compounds attributed to differing numbers of carboxylate bonds to Np(III), where in Np-1β the energy is low enough to result in spontaneous oxidation.

Determining the Effects of Zero-Field Splitting and Magnetic Exchange in Dimeric Europium(II) Complexes

Related BAP [BAP = bis(acyl)phosphide] and Acac (Acac = β-diketonate) molecules perform as robust supports for both lanthanide and actinide metals. Here, a molecular bimetallic Eu 2+ complex was successfully targeted and isolated by employing sodium bis(mesitoyl)phosphide [Na( mes BAP)] in a salt metathesis with EuI 2 , producing [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 (et 2 o = metal-coordinated diethyl ether). The corresponding Acac-Eu 2+ complex was targeted using mes Acac– (1,3-dimesityl-1,3-propanedione), generating [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 . Both complexes were characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, UV–vis, IR, and NMR spectroscopies, and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility. [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 was persistent under anaerobic, anhydrous conditions, whereas the analogous [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 showed evidence of decomposition under identical conditions. Finally, variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility and magnetization studies of [Eu( mes BAP) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 and [Eu( mes Acac) 2 (et 2 o)] 2 were performed, resulting in similar magnetic exchange coupling values of J ex = –0.018 and –0.023 cm –1 and axial zero-field-splitting D values of –0.38 and –0.51 cm –1 , respectively.

Bis( tert -butoxydiphenylsilyl)amide Divalent Lanthanide Complexes

The development of new ligand systems to stabilize “nontraditional/ non-classical” divalent lanthanides is key to tuning the chemical and physical properties of their mixed principal quantum number 4f n 5d 1 ground states. The design and study of novel ligand systems which stabilize occupation of differing orbitals within the 5d manifold for these ions constitutes an area ripe for exploration. Our efforts toward the development of redox-innocent bulky silylamide ligands to stabilize pseudo-octahedral coordination geometries for divalent lanthanides have resulted in the synthesis of the bis( tert -butoxydiphenylsilyl) amide ligand, whose coordination complexes with Sm 2+ , Eu 2+ , and Yb 2+ are reported herein. These systems have been fully characterized by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry, direct-current magnetometry, and infrared, nuclear magnetic resonance, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. Attempts to extend this system to the more reducing Tm 2+ ion resulted in an inseparable mixture of products from which crystals of the analogous Tm 2+ species and a reduced dinitrogen, bimetallic Tm 3+ -Tm 3+ complex bridged by a η 2 -N 2 3− radical could be identified. Though progress toward six-coordinate complexes of reducing “traditional/ classical” divalent ions is noted for these systems, further work is needed to improve the synthetic utility of this ligand framework for the study of “non-traditional/non-classical” divalent lanthanides with a mixed-principal quantum number 4f n 5d 1 ground state.
