A logical model of cooperating rule-based systems in space mission ground support facilities

This paper describes an abstract reference model of cooperating rule-based systems (CRBSs). The model is intended to assist in the planning, specification, development, and verification of space information systems involving multiple, distributed, communicating rule-based systems. The functions performed in ground control systems are described, and five types of rule-based systems that could be used in such centers are identified. The interactions between rule-based systems are examined, and the unique requirements of such systems are addressed. A four-layer logical model is discussed which provides a framework for discussing solutions to unique CRBS requirements. The elements and operations at each layer are described.

Distribution of dynamic loads for multiple cooperating robot manipulators

For the situation of multiple cooperating manipulators handling a single object, a formulation is presented which allows load distribution of the combined system to be made while taking manipulator dynamics into account. First, object dynamics are used to transform the motion task. An integrated procedure for modeling arm dynamics are used to transform the motion task. An integrated procedure for modeling arm dynamics is detailed. Then, a method is introduced which transforms the object load to the joint level. At this level, various methods of load distribution that allow subtask performance are proposed. These methods allow desired object motion while selecting loads desirable to alleviate manipulator dynamic loads.

Optimal terminal maneuver for a cooperative impulsive rendezvous

An optimal terminal maneuver is presently defined for the cooperative impulsive rendezvous of two spacecraft, in which each vehicle is capable of furnishing all or a part of the velocity change required for the rendezvous. In this maneuver, the final masses of the two vehicles are maximized in a fashion that is equivalent to minimum total propellant consumption. If neither propellant mass fraction constraint is active, one vehicle will supply all of the required velocity change.

A logical model of cooperating rule-based systems

A model is developed to assist in the planning, specification, development, and verification of space information systems involving distributed rule-based systems. The model is based on an analysis of possible uses of rule-based systems in control centers. This analysis is summarized as a data-flow model for a hypothetical intelligent control center. From this data-flow model, the logical model of cooperating rule-based systems is extracted. This model consists of four layers of increasing capability: (1) communicating agents, (2) belief-sharing knowledge sources, (3) goal-sharing interest areas, and (4) task-sharing job roles.

Optimal cooperative time-fixed impulsive rendezvous

New capabilities have been added to a method that had been developed for determining optimal, i.e., minimum fuel, trajectories for the fixed-time cooperative rendezvous of two spacecraft. The method utilizes the primer vector theory. The new capabilities enable the method to accomodate cases in which there are fuel constraints on the spacecraft and/or enable the addition of a mid-course impulse to one of the vehicle's trajectories. Results are presented for a large number of cases, and the effect of varying parameters, such as vehicle fuel constraints, vehicle initial masses, and time allowed for the rendezvous, is demonstrated.

Cooperative processing user interfaces for AdaNET

A cooperative processing user interface (CUI) system shares the task of graphical display generation and presentation between the user's computer and a remote host. The communications link between the two computers is typically a modem or Ethernet. The two main purposes of a CUI are reduction of the amount of data transmitted between user and host machines, and provision of a graphical user interface system to make the system easier to use.

Enroute flight planning: Evaluating design concepts for the development of cooperative problem-solving concepts

The goals of this research were to develop design concepts to support the task of enroute flight planning. And within this context, to explore and evaluate general design concepts and principles to guide the development of cooperative problem solving systems. A detailed model is to be developed of the cognitive processes involved in flight planning. Included in this model will be the identification of individual differences of subjects. Of particular interest will be differences between pilots and dispatchers. The effect will be studied of the effect on performance of tools that support planning at different levels of abstraction. In order to conduct this research, the Flight Planning Testbed (FPT) was developed, a fully functional testbed environment for studying advanced design concepts for tools to aid in flight planning.

ICADS: A cooperative decision making model with CLIPS experts

A cooperative decision making model is described which is comprised of six concurrently executing domain experts coordinated by a blackboard control expert. The focus application field is architectural design, and the domain experts represent consultants in the area of daylighting, noise control, structural support, cost estimating, space planning, and climate responsiveness. Both the domain experts and the blackboard were implemented as production systems, using an enhanced version of the basic CLIPS package. Acting in unison as an Expert Design Advisor, the domain and control experts react to the evolving design solution progressively developed by the user in a 2-D CAD drawing environment. A Geometry Interpreter maps each drawing action taken by the user to real world objects, such as spaces, walls, windows, and doors. These objects, endowed with geometric and nongeometric attributes, are stored as frames in a semantic network. Object descriptions are derived partly from the geometry of the drawing environment and partly from knowledge bases containing prototypical, generalized information about the building type and site conditions under consideration.

Cooperative research and development opportunities with the National Cancer Institute

The Office of Technology Development (OTD) of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) is responsible for negotiating Cooperative Research and Development Agreements (CRADAs), whereby the knowledge resulting from NCI investigators' government-sponsored research is developed in collaboration with universities and/or industry into new products of importance for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS). The NCI has recently executed a unique 'clinical trials' CRADA and is developing a model agreement based upon it for the development and commercialization of products for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and AIDS. NCI drug screening, preclinical testing, clinical trials, and AIDS program capabilities form the basis for this new technology development/technology transfer vehicle. NCI's extensive drug screening program and 'designer foods' program serve as potential sources of investigational new drugs (INDs) and cancer preventatives. Collaborations between NCI and pharmaceutical companies having the facilities, experience, and expertise necessary to develop INDs into approved drugs available to the public are being encouraged where the companies have proprietary rights to INDs, or where NCI has proprietary rights to INDs and invites companies to respond to a collaborator announcement published in the Federal Register. The joint efforts of the NCI and the chosen collaborator are designed to generate the data necessary to obtain pharmaceutic regulatory approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to market the drugs developed, and thereby make them available to health care providers for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and AIDS.

Dynamic model and cooperative control of a serially linked manipulator system

The use of a redundant manipulator to execute multiple tasks specified at different points on the manipulator is demonstrated. This is accomplished by decomposing a redundant arm at an intermediate arm location called the 'elbow' into two nonredundant local arms referred as the 'basearm' and the 'forearm'. This decomposition transforms a redundant arm into a serially linked dual-arm system, where the cooperation between the basearm and the forearm is carried out through the task distribution and the elbow control. The kinematics of a decomposed redundant manipulator are discussed, and a Cartesian space dynamic model and dynamic equation of a decomposed redundant manipulator are presented. The capability of generating Cartesian force, the local efficiency of generating Cartesian acceleration, and dynamic task distribution are discussed.

An assessment of prospects for international cooperation on the Space Exploration Initiative

This paper discusses the unique characteristics of the Space Exploration Initiative (SEI) which will have to be taken into account if the Initiative is to become an international one; the technical capabilities offered by prospective international partners; the political and economic prospects for proceeding with the Initiative both in the United States and elsewhere; and the advantages and disadvantages of various possible approaches to international cooperation on SEI. SEI preparatory activities are likely to extend over a several-year period. Such an extended preparatory period should provide the time needed for coordinating studies, for identifing interests and potential contributions, and for resolving the numerous planning, budgeting, organizational and political issues which will have to be dealt with if such a complex undertaking is to be successfully internationalized.
