The value of residential photovoltaic systems: A comprehensive assessment

Utility-interactive photovoltaic (PV) arrays on residential rooftops appear to be a potentially attractive, large-scale application of PV technology. Results of a comprehensive assessment of the value (i.e., break-even cost) of utility-grid connected residential photovoltaic power systems under a variety of technological and economic assumptions are presented. A wide range of allowable PV system costs are calculated for small (4.34 kW (p) sub ac) residential PV systems in various locales across the United States. Primary factor in this variation are differences in local weather conditions, utility-specific electric generation capacity, fuel types, and customer-load profiles that effect purchase and sell-back rates, and non-uniform state tax considerations. Additional results from this analysis are: locations having the highest insolation values are not necessary the most economically attractive sites; residential PV systems connected in parallel to the utility demonstrate high percentages of energy sold back to the grid, and owner financial and tax assumptions cause large variations in break-even costs. Significant cost reduction and aggressive resolution of potential institutional impediments (e.g., liability, standards, metering, and technical integration) are required for a residential PV marker to become a major electric-grid-connected energy-generation source.

Comprehensive modeling of a liquid rocket combustion chamber

An analytical model for the simulation of detailed three-phase combustion flows inside a liquid rocket combustion chamber is presented. The three phases involved are: a multispecies gaseous phase, an incompressible liquid phase, and a particulate droplet phase. The gas and liquid phases are continuum described in an Eulerian fashion. A two-phase solution capability for these continuum media is obtained through a marriage of the Implicit Continuous Eulerian (ICE) technique and the fractional Volume of Fluid (VOF) free surface description method. On the other hand, the particulate phase is given a discrete treatment and described in a Lagrangian fashion. All three phases are hence treated rigorously. Semi-empirical physical models are used to describe all interphase coupling terms as well as the chemistry among gaseous components. Sample calculations using the model are given. The results show promising application to truly comprehensive modeling of complex liquid-fueled engine systems.

The interplanetary shock event of November 11/12 1978 - A comprehensive test of acceleration theory

A comprehensive study of the November 11, 12, 1978 shock event based on energetic particle, solar wind, magnetic field and wave data from the ISEE-3, -1 and -2 spacecraft has been undertaken both from the energetic and the collisionless shock point of view. The energy density of 10-50 keV protons accelerated by the shock is found to be equivalent to the upstream magnetic field energy density. The observations are in quantitative agreement with Lee's (1983) self consistent theory for the excitation of hydromagnetic waves and the acceleration of ions upstream of interplanetary shocks.

Implementation and verification of a comprehensive helicopter coupled rotor - Fuselage analysis

The analytical basis and the application of a Rotor/Airframe Comprehensive Aeroelastic Program (RACAP) are described in detail. The rationale behind each analytical choice is outlined and the modular procedure is described. The program is verified by application to the AH-1G helicopter. The applicability of various airload prediction models is examined, and both the steady and vibratory responses of the blade are compared with flight test data. Reasonable correlation is found between measured and calculated blade response, with excellent correlation for vibration amplitudes at various locations on the fuselage such as engine, pilot seat, and gunner. Within the analytical model, comparisons are drawn between an isolated blade analysis and a coupled rotor/fuselage model. The deficiency of the former in the context of the AH-1G is highlighted.

Comprehensive analysis of Shuttle Orbiter leeside surface infrared imagery obtained during atmospheric entry

The thermographic analysis techniques developed for processing of data from the Shuttle Infrared Leeside Temperature Sensing (SILTS) experiment are discussed. The SILTS experiment will obtain high-spatial-resolution infrared images of the leeside of the Space Shuttle Orbiter during atmospheric entry by means of a scanning infrared radiometer located atop the orbiter's vertical stabilizer. Comprehensive analysis of the SILTS thermography requires accurate consideration of all those factors (such as geometry of the observed surfaces, local surface emissivity, solar radiation, and other potential sources of image degradation) which may potentially affect the output of the infrared radiometer. An overview of the entire data processing procedure and brief descriptions of the data processing algorithms are presented.

The need for a comprehensive expert system development methodology

In a traditional software development environment, the introduction of standardized approaches has led to higher quality, maintainable products on the technical side and greater visibility into the status of the effort on the management side. This study examined expert system development to determine whether it differed enough from traditional systems to warrant a reevaluation of current software development methodologies. Its purpose was to identify areas of similarity with traditional software development and areas requiring tailoring to the unique needs of expert systems. A second purpose was to determine whether existing expert system development methodologies meet the needs of expert system development, management, and maintenance personnel. The study consisted of a literature search and personal interviews. It was determined that existing methodologies and approaches to developing expert systems are not comprehensive nor are they easily applied, especially to cradle to grave system development. As a result, requirements were derived for an expert system development methodology and an initial annotated outline derived for such a methodology.

Application of a comprehensive analytical model of rotorcraft aerodynamics and dynamics (CAMRAD) to the McDonnell Douglas AH-64A helicopter

CAMRAD results on main rotor blade natural frequency and structural loads predictions are compared to flight test data and predictions of the Dynamic Analysis Research Tool (DART) and the Rotor/Airframe Comprehensive Aeroelastic Program (RACAP). Consideration is also given to the effects of various analytical options available in CAMRAD including dynamic stall, wake modeling, and the number of bending and torsion degrees of freedom included in the structural analysis. It is concluded that, while several modeling limitations are identified in the CAMRAD structural analyses, the structural loads predictions are as accurate as analysis codes which provide more representative models of the complex geometries and structures of the AH-64A rotor system. However, it is noted that the CAMRAD analysis cannot be considered fully reliable for dynamic predictions for more advanced bearingless rotor designs being proposed for future AH-64 configurations.

A comprehensive model of ion diffusion and charge exchange in the cold Io torus

A comprehensive analytic model of radial diffusion in the cold Io torus is developed. The model involves a generalized molecular cloud theory of SO2 and its dissociation fragments SO, O2, S, and O, which are formed at a relatively large rate by solar UV photodissociation of SO2. The key component of the new theory is SO, which can react with S(+) through a near-resonant charge exchange process that is exothermic. This provides a mechanism for the rapid depletion of singly ionized sulfur in the cold torus and can account for the large decrease in the total flux tube content inward of Io's orbit. The model is used to demonstrate quantitatively the effects of radial diffusion in a charge exchange environment that acts as a combined source and sink for ions in various charge states. A detailed quantitative explanation for the O(2+) component of the cold torus is given, and insight is derived into the workings of the so-called plasma 'ribbon'.

Comprehensive Silicon-Solar-Cell Program

Comprehensive Silicon Solar Cell Computer Modeling (SICELL) program simulates silicon solar cell. Predicts device parameters as efficiency, voltage-vs.-current characteristic fill factor, and temperature coefficients of parameters. Technique used similar to numerical-integration methods, but commonality described by use of mesh-point field. Validation studies show accuracies of simulations range from 0.08 percent to 3.6 percent for 27 experimental data points over temperature range of 300K to 421K. Results obtained by use of 10 mesh points in n- and p-type regions and for two iterations. SICELL runs interactively on VAX computer under VMS and written in VAX/VMS FORTRAN 77.
