Battery Energy Storage System Evaluation Method

This report describes development of an effort to assess Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) performance that the US DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) and others can employ to evaluate performance of deployed BESS or solar photovoltaic (PV) +BESS systems. The proposed method is based on actual battery charge and discharge metered data to be collected from BESS systems provided by federal agencies participating in the FEMP's performance assessment initiatives. Long-term (e.g., at least one year) time series (e.g., hourly) charge and discharge data are analyzed to provide approximate estimates of key performance indicators (KPIs).

Statistical Estimation of EV Driver Charging Behavior and Influential Factors

INL received data collected via telematics from battery electric vehicles (BEVs), and these vehicles were owned by retail customers who had entered into a telematics user agreement. The goal of analyzing these data was to develop mathematical models to characterize how different sets of BEV drivers use charging infrastructure at home and away from home (i.e., public charging) and quantify how various factors influence BEV drivers’ decision to charge and use available infrastructure. The data used in this analysis are unique because they provide real world BEV driving and charging behavior at the individual driving and parking event level. In this study we seek to leverage this data to quantify BEV charging and driving metrics to help inform models that predict quantities like the specific times when loads are imposed on the electrical grid due to BEV charging. Most models that have been developed to predict electrical grid load due to BEV charging, use simulations of BEV driving events and rely on assumptions such as every vehicle charges every night. Using a statistical modelling framework, we seek to investigate BEV charging behavior and quantitatively assess these common assumptions of BEV charging behavior.

Solar Array and Auroral Charging Studies of DMSP Spacecraft

The SSJ electrostatic analyzers and the SSIES plasma instruments on the DMSP spacecraft in low Earth polar orbit can be used to conduct case studies of auroral and solar array charging. We will use a program written in the Interactive Data Language (IDL) to evaluate questionable charging events in the SSJ records by comparing charging signatures in SSJ and SSIES data. In addition, we will assemble a number of case studies of solar array charging showing the signatures from the SSJ data and compare to the SSIES charging signatures. In addition we will use Satellite Tool Kit (STK) to propagate orbits, obtain solar intensity, and use to verify onset of charging with sunrise.

Prediction of Battery Life and Behavior from Analysis of Voltage Data

A method for simulating charge and discharge characteristics of secondary batteries is discussed. The analysis utilizes a nonlinear regression technique where empirical data is computer fitted with a five coefficient nonlinear equation. The equations for charge and discharge voltage are identical except for a change of sign before the second and third terms.

Real-Time Anomaly Detection for Charge-Based Triggering in LArTPCs

Modern particle detectors, including liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs), collect a vast amount of data, making it impractical to save everything for offline analysis. As a result, these experiments need to employ different down-selection techniques during data acquisition, referred to as triggering. In this talk, I will present a framework that would enable real-time, data-driven triggering for LArTPCs, using anomaly detection algorithms implemented on Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs). Drawing on a study that makes use of collected charge data from the MicroBooNE LArTPC Public Dataset, I will discuss the overall performance of such algorithms and potential applications for future neutrino experiments.

Search for heavy long-lived multi-charged particles in the full LHC Run 2 pp collision data at s = 13 TeV using the ATLAS detector

A search for heavy long-lived multi-charged particles is performed using the ATLAS detector at the LHC. Data collected in 2015-2018 at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV from pp collisions corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb -1 are examined. Particles producing anomalously high ionization, consistent with long-lived spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ massive particles with electric charges from |q|=2e to |q|=7e are searched for. No statistically significant evidence of such particles is observed, and 95% confidence level cross-section upper limits are calculated and interpreted as the lower mass limits for a Drell-Yan plus photon-fusion production mode. The least stringent limit, 1060 GeV, is obtained for |q|=2e particles, and the most stringent one, 1600 GeV, is for |q|=6e particles.

Charged particle diagnostics for inertial confinement fusion and high-energy-density physics experiments

MeV-range ions generated in inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and high-energy-density physics experiments carry a wealth of information, including fusion reaction yield, rate, and spatial emission profile; implosion areal density; electron temperature and mix; and electric and magnetic fields. Here, the principles of how this information is obtained from data and the charged particle diagnostic suite currently available at the major US ICF facilities for making the measurements are reviewed. Time-integrating instruments using image plate, radiochromic film, and/or CR-39 detectors in different configurations for ion counting, spectroscopy, or emission profile measurements are described, along with time-resolving detectors using chemical vapor deposited diamonds coupled to oscilloscopes or scintillators coupled to streak cameras for measuring the timing of ion emission. A brief description of charged-particle radiography setups for probing subject plasma experiments is also given. The goal of the paper is to provide the reader with a broad overview of available capabilities, with reference to resources where more detailed information can be found.

The track-length extension fitting algorithm for energy measurement of interacting particles in liquid argon TPCs and its performance with ProtoDUNE-SP data

This paper introduces a novel track-length extension fitting algorithm for measuring the kinetic energies of inelastically interacting particles in liquid argon time projection chambers (LArTPCs). The algorithm finds the most probable offset in track length for a track-like object by comparing the measured ionization density as a function of position with a theoretical prediction of the energy loss as a function of the energy, including models of electron recombination and detector response. The algorithm can be used to measure the energies of particles that interact before they stop, such as charged pions that are absorbed by argon nuclei. The algorithm's energy measurement resolutions and fractional biases are presented as functions of particle kinetic energy and number of track hits using samples of stopping secondary charged pions in data collected by the ProtoDUNE-SP detector, and also in a detailed simulation. Additional studies describe the impact of the dE/dx model on energy measurement performance. The method described in this paper to characterize the energy measurement performance can be repeated in any LArTPC experiment using stopping secondary charged pions.

The Z3 zonal harmonic model of Saturn's magnetic field Analyses and implications

The planetary magnetic field of Saturn has been studied by the spacecraft Pioneer 11 in 1979, Voyager 1 in 1980, and Voyager 2 in 1981. The field is found to be primarily dipolar and axially coincident with the rotation axis, but with significant quadrupole and octupole moments. The harmonic terms are g1(0) = 21535 nT, g2(0) = 1642 nT, and g3(0) = 2743 nT. This model field, Z3, in conjunction with a model for an equatorial ring current, represents very precisely the in situ magnetic-field measurements and data on charged-particle absorption by satellites and rings within 8 Saturn radii of the planet. However, this axisymmetric model fails to explain the periodic modulation of Saturn's kilometric radiation or Saturn's electrostatic discharges. This enigma of Saturn's magnetosphere remains unsolved in spite of extensive reconsideration of all available data bearing on this issue.

Caldera Infrastructure Charge Module (ICM)

Caldera ICM is part of Caldera software platform, a suite of collective, open-source tools that was developed to improve the state of the art in modeling the impacts of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging on the grid. The foundation of Caldera ICM is it’s first-of-its-kind library of high-fidelity charging models for a wide variety of vehicles, validated by test data under a range of operating conditions. The charging models are used to accurately model the EV charging on an electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) – also known as a charger. ICM uses as inputs, the EV characteristics such as battery size, battery chemistry (i.e. NMC, LTO), watt hour per mile, inverter efficiency and max charge rate; as well as EVSE characteristics such as max current and supply equipment type (i.e. L2 vs XFC). Using these inputs Caldera ICM creates an uncontrolled charging profile curve for each compatible EV-EVSE pair. These charge profiles can be used stand alone to estimate charge duration given start State Of Charge (SOC) and end SOC or charge energy size given start SOC and charge duration. In Caldera Grid, another tool in the Caldera software platform, these charge profiles are used to represent EV charging as a load on the grid using charge event data such as EV type, SE type, start SOC, final SOC, park start time and park end time. ICM currently supports energy shifting Smart Charge Management (SCM) strategies such as "Time Of Use (TOU) immediate”, “TOU random” and “random start” by delaying the charge to start at a preferable time with respect to the strategy and, one voltage support SCM strategy named autonomous voltage control strategy by providing reactive power back to the electric grid.
