The infrared diagnostic of a dusty plasma with applications to supernova remnants

IRAS observations of infrared emission from supernova remnants constitute the first observational evidence of shock-heated dust in the interstellar medium. These observations can provide valuable information on the morphology of supernova remnants, and on their interaction with the ambient interstellar medium. In particular, they can be used to study the physical condition and the cooling rate of dusty astrophysical plasmas. In this paper, consideration is given to the possibilities and limitations of using the infrared observations as a diagnostic for the shocked gas, and as a means of determining remnant parameters. The paper presents improved calculations for the cooling rate of a dusty plasma by means of gas-grain collisions, and the equilibrium temperature of the dust for a variety of plasma conditions. These results are then used to define the density-temperature parameter space of the plasma, which, given its infrared spectrum, should be occupied by the observed remnant. This constraint can be used to estimate distances to supernova remnants and to set limits on various parameters that determine their evolution. The analysis is applied to the remnants Cas A and the Cygnus Loop.

Accurate ab initio calculations for the ground states of N2, O2 and F2

Spectroscopic constants and dissociation energies for the ground states of N2, O2, and F2 determined at the CAS SCF MRCI correlation level are in excellent agreement with experiment when very large primitive valence and polarization one-particle Gaussian basis sets are employed. The dissociation energy (De) for N2 is larger than experiment unless the 2s electrons are correlated. The basis set requirement for an accurate determination of De is found to increase with the degree of multiple-bond character in the molecule.

Radio and optical studies of supernova 1961V in NGC 1058

Radio observations of the Sc galaxy NGC 1058 at 20 cm and 6 cm reveal two radio sources. One of the sources is coincident with supernova 1961V and has a spectral index of -0.4 + or - 0.3. This is the second (and probably the third) detection of radio emission from a supernova decades after optical maximum. The absolute luminosity of SN 1961V at 20 cm is comparable to Cas A. A second source, about 2.3 arcsec to the west, has a spectral index of -0.3 + or - 0.3 and is likely to be the remnant of a supernova that was not optically detected. Optical images of NGC 1058 show two faint H II regions associated with the radio sources. Filter photometry in several bands indicates that these two H II regions are normal with respect to the many optically brighter, albeit radio-quiet, H II regions in NGC 1058.

A survey of chemical information systems

A survey of the features, functions, and characteristics of a fairly wide variety of chemical information storage and retrieval systems currently in operation is given. The types of systems (together with an identification of the specific systems) addressed within this survey are as follows: patents and bibliographies (Derwent's Patent System; IFI Comprehensive Database; PULSAR); pharmacology and toxicology (Chemfile; PAGODE; CBF; HEEDA; NAPRALERT; MAACS); the chemical information system (CAS Chemical Registry System; SANSS; MSSS; CSEARCH; GINA; NMRLIT; CRYST; XTAL; PDSM; CAISF; RTECS Search System; AQUATOX; WDROP; OHMTADS; MLAB; Chemlab); spectra (OCETH; ASTM); crystals (CRYSRC); and physical properties (DETHERM). Summary characteristics and current trends in chemical information systems development are also examined.

X-ray halos around supernova remnants

The results are reported of an Einstein Observatory imaging proportional counter investigation of the X-ray halos of the four brightest young Galactic supernova remnants: the Crab Nebula, Cas A, Tycho's, and Kepler's supernova remnant. It is found that the size, shape, and rough intensity of each of these sources are consistent with the measured properties of the X-ray halos of compact Galactic X-ray sources, and as such are consistent with an origin due solely to the scattering of X-rays by interstellar grains.

A second supernova inside Puppis A?

Narrow-band images of an unusual swirl structure located near the center of the Puppis A supernova remnant are presented which reveal three overlapping filamentary systems of highly diverse composition. One is dominated by emission lines of nitrogen, one by oxygen, and one by sulfur. Spectra indicate that these small rings have high velocities and a corresponding kinematic age of less than 800 yr. Heavy-element abundances are extremely high and different in each system, some reminiscent of knots in Cas A, and others of circumstellar matter observed surrounding supernova 1987A. The youth and unusual chemistry lead to the suggestion that a second supernova has exploded within the shell of Puppis A, giving rise to the swirl structure.

Theoretical studies of the infrared emission from circumstellar dust shells - The infrared characteristics of circumstellar silicates and the mass-loss rate of oxygen-rich late-type giants

A simple analytic formula and a numerical radiative transfer program have been used to model the IR emission of spherically symmetric circumstellar dust shells in order to determine the IR absorption properties of circumstellar silicate grains and the mass-loss rates of the central stars. The correlation between the near-IR color temperature and the strength of the 10-micron emission or absorption feature is discussed, and it is shown that the near-IR absorption efficiency of circumstellar silicate grains is much higher than is expected from terrestrial minerals, possibly due to the presence of Fe(2+) color centers dissolved in the circumstellar silicates. Detailed models of the IR emission of R Cas, IRC 10011, and OH 26.5+0.6 are presented.

The chromosphere of Beta Cassiopeiae

High-resolution, long-wavelength IUE observations and ground-based photometry of the Delta Scuti star Beta Cas is reported. The ground-based observations were used together with previous results of Antonello et al. (1986) to ensure that the IUE observations were correctly phased relative to the photometric variation. Fluxes for the emission core of the Mg II k 2796-A line were obtained from the UV spectra over several cycles in 1986 and 1987. It is found that there is an increase in the emission during part of the cycle, but it occurs near minimum light in contrast to another Delta Scuti star, Rho Pup, and the classical Cepheids (where it occurs near maximum light). The mean level of chromospheric activity is comparable to other early F dwarfs.

A conflict analysis of 4D descent strategies in a metered, multiple-arrival route environment

A conflict analysis was performed on multiple arrival traffic at a typical metered airport. The Flow Management Evaluation Model (FMEM) was used to simulate arrival operations using Denver Stapleton's arrival route structure. Sensitivities of conflict performance to three different 4-D descent strategies (clear-idle Mach/Constant AirSpeed (CAS), constant descent angle Mach/CAS and energy optimal) were examined for three traffic mixes represented by those found at Denver Stapleton, John F. Kennedy and typical en route metering (ERM) airports. The Monte Carlo technique was used to generate simulation entry point times. Analysis results indicate that the clean-idle descent strategy offers the best compromise in overall performance. Performance measures primarily include susceptibility to conflict and conflict severity. Fuel usage performance is extrapolated from previous descent strategy studies.

The interstellar D1 line at high resolution

Observations at a resolving power or a velocity resolution are reported of the interstellar D(sub 1) line of Na I in the spectra of gamma Cas, delta Ori, epsilon Ori, pi Sco, delta Cyg, and alpha Cyg. An echelle grating was used in a double-pass configuration with a CCD detector in the coude spectrograph of the 2.7 m reflector at McDonald Observatory. At least 42 kinematically distinct clouds are detected along the light paths to the five more distant stars, in addition to a single cloud seen toward delta Cyg. The absorption lines arising in 13 of the clouds are sufficiently narrow and unblended to reveal clearly resolved hyperfine structure components split by 1.05 km/s. An additional 13 clouds apparently show comparably narrow, but more strongly blended, lines. For each individual cloud, upper limits T(sub max) and (v sub t)(sub max) on the temperature and the turbulent velocity, respectively, are derived by fitting the observed lines with theoretical absorption profiles.

Pure-oxygen radiative shocks with electron thermal conduction

Steady state radiative shock models in gas composed entirely of oxygen are calculated with the purpose of explaining observations of fast-moving knots in Cas A and other oxygen-rich SNRs. Models with electron thermal conduction differ significantly from models in which conduction is neglected. Conduction reduces postshock electron temperatures by a factor of 7-10 and flattens temperature gradients. The O III ion, whose forbidden emission usually dominates the observed spectra, is present over a wide range of shock velocities, from 100 to 170 km/s. The electron temperature in the O III forbidden line formation region is 30,000 K, in agreement with the 20,000 K derived from observations. All models with conduction have extensive warm (T above 4000 K) photoionization zones, which provides better agreement with observed optical O I line strengths.

Detection of the secondary star in HT Cassiopeiae

Low-resolution spectra of the eclipsing dwarf nova HT Cas, taken over the range 5000-9800 A show TiO bands and Na I absorption lines from the secondary star. From the TiO band ratio at mid-eclipse it is estimated that the secondary star contributes about 37 percent of the light at 7500 A during the eclipse, and that it has a Boeshaar spectral type M5.4 + or - 0.3. The mass, radius, and luminosity of the secondary star are all consistent with main-sequence values. The TiO band strength diminishes greatly near phase 0.5, but an eclipse by the disk is not sufficient to explain this. The radial velocity is measured from the Na line near 8200 A for most of the spectra and (after a correction for the asymmetric distribution of absorption over the secondary star) its radial velocity semiamplitude K2 = 430 + or - 25 km/sec.

Colliding stellar winds in O-type close binary systems

A study of the stellar wind properties of O-type close binary systems is presented. The main objective of this program was to search for colliding winds in four systems, AO Cas, iota Ori, Plaskett's star, and 29 UW CMa, through an examination of high dispersion UV spectra from IUE and optical spectra of the H alpha and He I lambda 6678 emission lines.

The C2 Ballik-Ramsay transitions in carbon stars

The bands of C2 are an important source of opacity in the near-infrared spectral region of carbon stars. In the 2 micron spectral region, the Delta v = -1 and -2 transitions of the Ballik-Ramsay b 3Sigma(g)(-) - a 3Pi(u) system are especially important. A general method for calculating highly accurate transition parameters of the Ballik-Ramsay band is presented. This method allows the easy calculation of the satellite lines and the forbidden lines resulting from the perturbation of the upper b 3Sigma(g)(-) state by the X 1Sigma(0)(+) state. Included in the calculation is the effect of the isotopic molecules (C-12)2, (C-12)(C-13), and (C-13)2. Three consistency tests of the calculated strengths are presented. A comparison of synthetic spectra is made with an observed spectrum of WZ Cas in the 3940/cm spectral region.

Star formation in Taurus-Auriga - The high-mass stars

The question of whether the star formation in the Tau-Aur clouds produces low-mass stars exclusively is considered. The paper identifies 29 B stars as possible kinematic members of the T association, and it is argued that the data are consistent with the existence of a single initial mass function (IMF) generating the low and high-mass stars. It is concluded that the Tau-Aur T association is related to the Cas-Tau OB association, and there is no evidence that the association IMF differs from the field star IMF.

Chromospheric activity in Delta Scuti stars - The suspected variable Tau Cygni

High-resolution IUE spectra of the suspected variable Tau Cyg were obtained to search for a possible variability of the Mg II h, k double-peaked emission. The observations, spanning an interval of about 6.3 h, have shown flux excursions within or just near 15 percent, a value suggested as the detection limit of actual variations with IUE spectra. A variability, difficult to explain, could be present in the ratios Fk2v/Fk2r. The emission fluxes seem to be higher than those of the Delta Scuti variables Rho Pup and Beta Cas. This comparison could give some insights on the possible role of the convection on the pulsational and chromospheric activities of Tau Cyg. A positive correlation between the total emission fluxes and the rotational velocities of these stars was found.

A spectroscopic search for colliding stellar winds in O-type close binary systems. I - AO Cassiopeiae

AO Cas, a short-period, double-lined spectroscopic binary, is studied as part of a search for spectroscopic evidence of colliding stellar winds in binary systems of O-type stars. High S/N ratio spectra of the H-alpha and He I 6678-A line profiles are presented, and their orbital-phase-related variations are examined in order to derive the location and motions of high-density circumstellar gas in the system. These profile variations are compared with those observed in the UV stellar wind lines in IUE archival spectra. IUE spectra are also used to derive a system mass ratio by constructing cross-correlation functions of a single-lined phase spectrum with each of the other spectra. The resulting mass ratio is consistent with the rotational line broadening of the primary star, if the primary is rotating synchronously with the binary system. The best-fit models were found to have an inclination of 61.1 deg + or - 3.0 deg and have a primary which is close to filling its critical Roche lobe.
