Metal fluxes at the sediment–water interface in a free water surface constructed wetland

Metal biogeochemistry in the sediment, water, and the sediment–water interface (SWI) was studied in a free water surface constructed wetland. Concentrations of labile copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), sulfate, chloride, and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) were measured with the diffusive gradients in thin film (DGT) and peeper. A good agreement between peeper- and DGT-measured metals was observed for Cu (regression r 2 = 0.3, 95% CI of the slopes > 0), but not for Zn (95% CI of the slopes overlapped with 0), which was attributed to the different complexed compounds between Cu and Zn in porewater. The depth profile of labile metals in sediment porewater varied with time and was consistent with the solid-phase metal deposition, showing higher concentrations in the surface layer (3 to –3 cm) than in the bottom layer (–4 to –13 cm). The depth-averaged labile Cu and Zn concentrations measured by DGT were 1.0 and 3.1 µg/L, and labile sulfate, chloride, and DOC concentrations measured by peeper were 1.8, 3.6, and 2.1 mg/L, respectively. A sharp decrease in sulfate occurred in September when sulfate concentrations became the lowest among sampling months. This was caused by the seasonal sulfur cycles in the wetland, where the dominant sulfur reaction is sulfate reduction in warm seasons and sulfide oxidation in cold seasons. Different metal-removal mechanisms were observed in the two wetland cells; sulfur dynamics controlled the removal processes in the cell without frequent disturbance but failed to influence metal removal in the cell with frequent disturbance due to the interruption of anoxic layers. The flux ratios that compare labile element concentrations between the water column and the SWI (R-Cu, R-Zn, R-DOC, R-sulfate, and R-chloride) were generated to determine metal diffusive fluxes at the interface. Labile Zn was mostly transported from the water to the SWI during all seasons (R-Zn < 1 for all months except January). Labile Cu moved from the SWI to the water during the warm months (R-Cu < 1), which was explained by the bioturbation-induced transport of organic matter based on the positive correlations between R-Cu and R-DOC. In general, sediment can serve either as a sink or a source depending on the environmental conditions, metal speciation, and presence of living organisms. Here, metal flux at the SWI is a key component in the biogeochemical cycling of a constructed wetland.

Cryogenic tracer irradiation facility at the university of Texas at Austin

We report on a cryogenic gas irradiation facility in the 1.1 MW TRIGA reactor at The University of Texas at Austin. The system was designed to produce radioactive xenon and argon for environmental studies, and it can be applied to produce other gaseous radiotracers. The system design includes modeling accident scenarios to ensure operation does not risk damage to the reactor and minimizes risk of release of radioactive material. In conclusion, the SCALE code was used to model a 30-day irradiation of one liter of Xe-126 and the predicted activity is 0.9 Ci of Xe-127 at irradiation end.

Post-Combat-Injury Opioid Prescription and Alcohol Use Disorder in the Military

Previous studies have identified combat exposure and combat traumatic experience as problematic drinking risk factors. Increasing evidence suggests that opioid use increases the risk of alcohol use disorder. This study investigated the association between opioid prescription use after injury and (1) alcohol use disorder and (2) severity of alcohol use disorder among deployed military servicemembers. Deidentified health records data of 9,029 deployed servicemembers from a retrospective cohort study were analyzed. Data were randomly selected from the Department of Defense Trauma Registry and included servicemembers with combat injuries during deployment in Iraq or Afghanistan (2002–2016). Pharmacy records and International Classification of Diseases, Ninth and Tenth Revision diagnosis codes were used. Three groups were identified (no opioid prescription use, nonpersistent opioid prescription use, and persistent opioid prescription use) and were compared on the basis of alcohol use disorder risk using Cox proportional hazard models. Data analyses were performed in 2021. Of the 9,029 servicemembers with combat injury, 2,262 developed alcohol use disorder (1,322 developed severe alcohol use disorder). Compared with no opioid prescription use, increased alcohol use disorder risk was associated with persistent opioid prescription use, with a hazard ratio of 1.13 (95% CI=1.02, 1.26). After covariate adjustment, increased risk remained statistically significant (hazards ratio=1.24; 95% CI=1.10, 1.39). There was no significant difference in alcohol use disorder risk between no opioid prescription use and nonpersistent opioid prescription use. The risk of severe alcohol use disorder did not vary by opioid use among servicemembers with alcohol use disorder diagnosis. Furthermore, the findings of the study suggest that the incidence of alcohol use disorder was higher among injured servicemembers with persistent opioid prescription use than among those without opioid use. If replicated in prospective studies, the findings highlight the need for clinicians to consider the current and history of alcohol use of patients in initiating treatment involving opioids.

Bipolar Membrane Electrodialyzers as Flexible Demand Response Resources: Co-Optimization of Cost Savings and Product Formation

Bipolar membrane electro dialyzers (BPMED) are widely used for chemical production and processing, including in the emerging ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE) industry. In this paper, we explore the potential of BPMED devices as flexible electrochemical loads within power system operations. Using a multi-objective optimization framework, we evaluate BPMED operation across 24-hour and monthly horizons to examine how dispatch strategies respond to electricity price and grid conditions. Simulation results show that altering the relative weights of the choices in the objective function strongly shape the operating patterns, with cost-focused strategies that suppress the operation during peak prices. Furthermore, we propose alternative formulations that optimize operations to achieve both cost savings and alignment with periods of lower grid-side carbon intensity (CI), as low grid-side CI is key to maximize OAE efficiency. Additionally, a detailed sensitivity analysis highlights the importance of device properties, where low area-specific resistance (ASR) of membrane and high current efficiency (CE) are observed to jointly unlock cost-effective operation. However, even modest shunt efficiency losses are observed to erode performance and decrease system value. Importantly, the analysis demonstrates that BPMED can serve as a controllable and flexible demand response resource, shifting load to support multiple grid-side objectives, including (but not limited to) renewable integration, alleviate peak demand, and provide co-benefits for system reliability. These findings underscore BPMED’s dual role as a process technology and a grid-supporting asset, pointing to promising pathways for operational optimization of multiple objectives.

Krypton-81 dating of the deep Continental Intercalaire aquifer with implications for chlorine-36 dating

Deep groundwater samples from the Continental Intercalaire (CI) aquifer in the Northern Tunisian Sahara have been analyzed for noble gases 3 He, 4 He, Ne and 81 Kr, and for 14 C to better constrain the groundwater residence time of this large transboundary aquifer. Its significant radiogenic 4 He content and background-level 14 C both indicate water older than a few tens of thousands of years. Distinct helium concentrations and Ne/He ratios suggest different groundwater flow paths through the Tozeur and Kebili regions. 81 Kr is applied for the first time on the CI aquifer, providing more direct evidence for the presence of old groundwater with 81 Kr/Kr ratios at 63% – 15% of the atmospheric value, corresponding to residence times of 150 – 630 ka. These newly obtained 81 Kr ages enable a re-evaluation of the previously reported data from the Tozeur region in order to better constrain the input values of 36 Cl/Cl and Cl. The initial 36 Cl/Cl ratio is found to be 4 – 6 times larger than previously assumed, and the initial Cl concentration 6 – 15 times smaller. The results of 81 Kr dating and the recalibrated 36 Cl dating define an eastward age progression across > 500 km of flow path from the Algerian to Tunisian sections. Here, this study exemplifies the utility of 81 Kr not only as an independent and conservative chronometer, but also as a supplemental measurement to better calibrate the parameters required for other age tracers, including cosmogenic 36 Cl and radiogenic 4 He.

Elemental and isotopic signatures of Asteroid Ryugu support three early Solar System reservoirs

Understanding the number and locations of different reservoirs present in the early Solar System is crucial to understanding the Solar System’s origin and evolution. Previous work has suggested that three unique isotopic reservoirs existed in the early Solar System but subsequent works have challenged that idea. Here we present elemental abundances along with Ca, Ti, Cr, Fe, Ni, and Zn isotopic data from primitive material returned by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) Hayabusa2 mission to asteroid (162173) Ryugu to make inferences on the Solar System’s early architecture. Data from Ryugu particle A0208 are consistent with a close genetic heritage between Ryugu and CI chondrites. Here, we employ principal component analysis (PCA) on these Ryugu and published meteorite data to demonstrate that Ryugu and CI chondrites are distinct from other known astromaterials, strongly supporting the existence of a third major isotopic reservoir in the early Solar System.

Multi-site evaluation of stratified and balanced sampling of soil organic carbon stocks in agricultural fields

Estimating soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks in agricultural fields is essential for environmental and agronomic research, management, and policy. Stratified sampling is a classic strategy for estimating mean soil properties, and has recently been codified in SOC monitoring protocols. However, for the specific task of estimating the SOC stock of an agricultural field, concrete guidance is needed for which covariates to stratify on and how much stratification can improve estimation efficiency. It is also unknown how stratified sampling of SOC stocks compares to modern alternatives, notably doubly balanced sampling. To address these gaps, we collected high-density (average of 7 samples ha -1 ) and deep (average of 75 cm) measurements of SOC stocks at eight commercial fields under maize-soybean production in two US Midwestern states. We combined these measurements with a Bayesian geostatistical model to evaluate stratified and balanced sampling strategies that use a set of readily-available geographic, topographic, spectroscopic, and soil survey data. We examined the number of samples needed to achieve a given level of SOC stock estimation accuracy. While stratified sampling using these variables enables an average sample size reduction of 17% (95% CI, 11% to 23%) compared to simple random sampling, doubly balanced sampling is consistently more efficient, reducing sample sizes by 32% (95% CI, 25% to 37%). The data most important to these efficiency gains are a remotely-sensed SOC index, SSURGO estimates of SOC stocks, and the topographic wetness index. We conclude that in order to meet the urgent challenge of climate change, SOC stocks in agricultural fields could be more efficiently estimated by taking advantage of this readily-available data, especially with doubly balanced sampling.

Microstructure refinement of hot deformed Dy-free NdFeB magnets through a novel cold sintering approach by pressure-assisted spark plasma sintering

Anisotropic fine-grained Dy-free NdFeB high-performance magnets were produced using a novel cold sintering approach by pressure-assisted spark plasma sintering (SPS). The NdFeB nanocrystalline ribbon powders were subjected to cold sintering below 450 °C using pressure-assisted SPS, followed by hot deformation at 710 °C and 810 °C via SPS. Results indicate that cold sintering below 450 °C effectively restricts grain growth in the NdFeB magnets, yielding sub-100 nm scale grains across both fine-grained regions and most coarse-grained regions. The refined grain structure achieved through cold sintering allows for a lower hot deformation temperature as compared with the magnet by conventional sintering, as finer grains allow easier deformation and grain sliding/rotation. This process produces a highly fine-grained and anisotropic microstructure to achieve high magnetic performance (i.e., high intrinsic coercivity, remanence, and maximum energy product) in the magnets. The cold sintering (at 350 °C) and lower hot deformation temperatures required (e.g., 710 °C) help control grain coarsening and limit grain size that is commensurate with the size of a single magnetic domain of the Nd 2 Fe 14 B magnetic matrix phase, resulting in high intrinsic coercivity (H ci =11.4 kOe). Furthermore, the reduced hot deformation temperature mitigates the formation of coarse grain bands, leading to improved magnetic properties, specifically an increased remanence (B r = 14.3 kGs) and a high maximum energy product ((BH) max = 48 MGOe). In conclusion, cold sintered hot deformed NdFeB magnet also shows good thermal stability with reversible temperature coefficient α(B r )= -0.097 %/K and α(H ci )= -0.616 %/K at elevated temperatures up to 400 K.

Life cycle analysis of gasification and Fischer-Tropsch conversion of municipal solid waste for transportation fuel production

Non-recyclable municipal solid waste (MSW) can be used as feedstock for liquid fuel production via gasification followed by Fischer-Tropsch (FT) processes. Given the heterogeneity of MSW material composition and variation in material properties, its convertibility to liquid hydrocarbon fuels could vary widely, affecting the sustainability of utilizing non-recyclable MSW for fuel production. This study evaluates the life cycle greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (carbon intensities [CIs]) of FT fuels from non-recyclable MSW. Key issues that could greatly affect the CIs were examined, including fossil carbon content of the MSW, emission implications of diverting non-recyclable MSW from landfills to fuel production, and conversion efficiency. Results show that the CIs of fuels produced from various waste streams range 80–105 gCO2e/MJ, which may exceed the CI of petroleum fuels. Higher fossil carbon content in the MSW feedstock tends to incur higher GHG emissions as biogenic carbon emissions are considered carbon neutral. Meanwhile, diverting different fractions of non-recyclable MSW, such as food waste and low-quality paper, from landfills may result in GHG emissions that may include the potential avoidance of methane emissions and potential sequestration of biogenic carbon that is foregone. To reduce GHG emissions, a carbon capture and sequestration option in the fuel production stage is considered, which could reduce the CI by 53–64 gCO2e/MJ. Carbon fates of different non-recyclable MSW in landfills are further evaluated to determine how they vary and impact the CIs of MSW-derived fuels.

Generalized method for the optimization of pulse shape discrimination parameters

Organic scintillators exhibit fast timing, high detection efficiency for fast neutrons and pulse shape discrimination (PSD) capability. PSD is essential in mixed radiation fields, where different types of radiation need to be detected and discriminated. In neutron measurements for nuclear security and non proliferation effective PSD is crucial, because a weak neutron signature needs to be detected in the presence of a strong gamma-ray background. Here, the most commonly used deterministic PSD technique is charge integration (CI). This method requires the optimization of specific parameters to obtain the best gamma-neutron separation. These parameters depend on the scintillating material and light readout device and typically require a lengthy optimization process and a calibration reference measurement with a mixed source. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the scintillation fluorescence physics that enables to find the optimum PSD integration gates using only a gamma-ray emitter. We demonstrate our method using three organic scintillation detectors: deuterated trans-stilbene, small-molecule organic glass, and EJ-309. In all the investigated cases, our method allowed finding the optimum PSD CI parameters without the need of iterative optimization.

Assessing outdoor air quality and public health impact attributable to residential black carbon emissions in rural China

Black carbon (BC) is a significant component of particulate matter (PM) that relates to air pollution, climate forcing, and further implications for public health. BC is predominantly released from the combustion of solid fuels. Combustion of low-quality fuels in rural China may induce severe respiratory and cardiopulmonary health outcomes for residents, which have however been inadequately assessed. One major reason for the limited understanding is the lack of a high-resolution inventory. An improved method of estimating the BC-associated public health burden is needed. This work quantified premature mortalities due to residential BC emissions in rural China. Domestic BC emissions at 1×1 km resolution were compiled based on previous field investigation, which were further configured for air quality simulation. A chemistry transport model, WRF–CMAQ v5.2, was employed for simulating BC concentrations. The consequent premature mortalities were quantified by a BC-specific concentration-response function (CRF) derived from an epidemiological study. Results show that residential combustion of solid fuel in rural China emitted 648.0 Gg (95%CI: 361.0–965.9) BC in 2014, after dispersion, accounting for 51.8% of annual mean ground-level BC concentration in China. Such impact was most severe in North and Northeast China, and the Sichuan Basin. The further investigation estimated 171,000 (95%CI: 69,000–387,000) premature mortalities that were attributable to exposure to rural residential BC. These findings reveal the major contribution of rural residential BC emissions to air pollution formation and public health impacts. Our findings are anticipated to provide useful information for enacting the next-stage environmental strategy for the residential sector in China.

A Denoising Autoencoder for Improved Kikuchi Pattern Quality and Indexing in Electron Backscatter Diffraction

The rapid collection and indexing of electron diffraction patterns as produced via electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has enabled crystallographic orientation and structural determination, as well as additional property-determining strain and dislocation density information with increasing speed, resolution, and efficiency. Pattern indexing quality is reliant on the noise of the collected electron diffraction patterns, which is often convoluted by sample preparation and data collection parameters. EBSD acquisition is sensitive to many factors and thus can result in low confidence index (CI), poor image quality (IQ), and improper minimization of fit, which can result in noisy datasets and misrepresent the microstructure. In an attempt to enable both higher speed EBSD data collection and enable greater orientation fit accuracy with noisy datasets, an image denoising autoencoder was implemented to improve pattern quality. Here, we show that EBSD data processed through the autoencoder results in a higher CI, IQ, and a more accurate degree of fit. In addition, using denoised datasets in HR-EBSD cross correlative strain analysis can result in reduced phantom strain from erroneous calculations due to the increased indexing accuracy and improved correspondence between collected and simulated patterns.

Foodborne illness outbreaks linked to unpasteurised milk and relationship to changes in state laws – United States, 1998–2018

Consumption of unpasteurised milk in the United States has presented a public health challenge for decades because of the increased risk of pathogen transmission causing illness outbreaks. We analysed Foodborne Disease Outbreak Surveillance System data to characterise unpasteurised milk outbreaks. Using Poisson and negative binomial regression, we compared the number of outbreaks and outbreak-associated illnesses between jurisdictions grouped by legal status of unpasteurised milk sale based on a May 2019 survey of state laws. During 2013–2018, 75 outbreaks with 675 illnesses occurred that were linked to unpasteurised milk; of these, 325 illnesses (48%) were among people aged 0–19 years. Of 74 single-state outbreaks, 58 (78%) occurred in states where the sale of unpasteurised milk was expressly allowed. Compared with jurisdictions where retail sales were prohibited (n = 24), those where sales were expressly allowed (n = 27) were estimated to have 3.2 (95% CI 1.4–7.6) times greater number of outbreaks; of these, jurisdictions where sale was allowed in retail stores (n = 14) had 3.6 (95% CI 1.3–9.6) times greater number of outbreaks compared with those where sale was allowed on-farm only (n = 13). This study supports findings of previously published reports indicating that state laws resulting in increased availability of unpasteurised milk are associated with more outbreak-associated illnesses and outbreaks.

Source Contributions to Fine Particulate Matter and Attributable Mortality in India and the Surrounding Region

Fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) is a leading mortality risk factor in India and the surrounding region of South Asia. This study evaluates the contribution of emission sectors and fuels to PM 2.5 mass for 29 states in India and 6 surrounding countries (Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar) by combining source-specific emission estimates, stretched grid simulations from a chemical transport model, high resolution hybrid PM 2.5 , and disease-specific mortality estimates. We find that 1.02 (95% Confidence Interval (CI): 0.78-1.26) million deaths in South Asia attributable to ambient PM 2.5 in 2019 were primarily from three leading sectors: residential combustion (28%), industry (15%), and power generation (12%). Solid biofuel is the leading combustible fuel contributing to the PM 2.5 -attributable mortality (31%), followed by coal (17%), and oil and gas (14%). State-level analyses reveal higher residential combustion contributions (35%-39%) in states (Delhi, Uttar-Pradesh, Haryana) with high ambient PM 2.5 (>95 µg/m 3 ). The combined mortality burden associated with residential combustion (ambient) and household air pollution (HAP) in India is 0.72 million (95% CI:0.54-0.89) (68% attributable to HAP, 32% attributable to residential combustion). Our results illustrate the potential to reduce PM 2.5 mass and improve population health by reducing emissions from traditional energy sources across multiple sources in South Asia.

Toward Guided Mutagenesis: Gaussian Process Regression Predicts MHC Class II Antigen Mutant Binding

Antigen-specific immunotherapies (ASI) require successful loading and presentation of antigen peptides into the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) binding cleft. One route of ASI design is to mutate native antigens for either stronger or weaker binding interaction to MHC. Exploring all possible mutations is costly both experimentally and computationally. To reduce experimental and computational expense, here we investigate the minimal amount of prior data required to accurately predict the relative binding affinity of point mutations for peptide-MHC class II (pMHCII) binding. Using data from different residue subsets, we interpolate pMHCII mutant binding affinities by Gaussian process (GP) regression of residue volume and hydrophobicity. We apply GP regression to an experimental data set from the Immune Epitope Database, and theoretical data sets from NetMHCIIpan and Free Energy Perturbation calculations. We find that GP regression can predict binding affinities of nine neutral residues from a six-residue subset with an average R 2 coefficient of determination value of 0.62 ± 0.04 (±95% CI), average error of 0.09 ± 0.01 kcal/mol (±95% CI), and with an receiver operating characteristic (ROC) AUC value of 0.92 for binary classification of enhanced or diminished binding affinity. Similarly, metrics increase to an R2 value of 0.69 ± 0.04, average error of 0.07 ± 0.01 kcal/mol, and an ROC AUC value of 0.94 for predicting seven neutral residues from an eight-residue subset. Our work finds that prediction is most accurate for neutral residues at anchor residue sites without register shift. This work holds relevance to predicting pMHCII binding and accelerating ASI design.

Can We Better Constrain the Timing of GNAIW/UNADW Variability in the Western Equatorial Atlantic and Its Relationship to Climate Change During the Last Deglaciation?

We have revisited the well-trod VM28-122 core retrieved from the deep Colombian Basin, which includes sediments that reflect modern Upper North Atlantic Deep Water and extends through the last deglaciation into the last glacial period when the site was bathed in Glacial North Atlantic Intermediate Water. Here, we leverage the nearby Cariaco Basin's surface water radiocarbon reconstruction (reservoir age, and ΔR) on the IntCal20 timescale to recast the period of the last deglaciation with a newly constrained age model. Based on the revised age model, we observe that the multimillennial decrease in benthic δ 13 C and B/Ca (which record δ 13 C of dissolved inorganic carbon and Δ[CO 3 –2 ], respectively) began at 18,100 ± 240 (95% CI) calibrated years BP, synchronous with Termination 1, as identified by changes in the Antarctic Ice Sheet composite and by the onset of rapid glacier recession in the Southern Hemisphere (Denton et al., 2010, https://doi.org/10.1126/science.1184119; Denton et al., 2021, https://10.1016/j.quascirev.2020.106771). The beginning of the decrease in benthic δ 18 O is concurrent with the changes in carbon chemistry or at most, a few hundred years later. It is no later than 17,700 ± 300 (95% CI) yrs BP in our record, at the putative start of Heinrich Stadial 1. With sufficient data density (more than 2–3 control points per kyr) and an independent record of past surface water radiocarbon variations, it is possible to achieve late glacial and deglacial chronologies with fidelities similar to those of ice cores. Furthermore, doing so in more oceanographic locations should shed light more broadly on the mechanisms instrumental to abrupt climate change.

Measuring Fault Zone and Host Rock Hydraulic Properties Using Tidal Responses

Pore pressure diffusion along faults influences induced seismicity and rupture mechanics. In situ hydraulic diffusivity measurements along faults are rare and generally lower than inferred from seismicity migration. Here we use the tidal response of deep geothermal boreholes to measure fault diffusivity and permeability. Initial interpretations of the observation with a homogeneous confined aquifer model result in diffusivities of 10 -3 –10 -1 m 2 /s. However, this model mixes signals from both the conduit and the host rock. We develop a model for tidal response with a fault passing through the aquifer based on the fault-guided fracture network and solve for hydraulic properties in both the fault and the host rock. The resulting fault permeability is 2 × 10 -14 –7 × 10 -14 m 2 (90% confidence interval[CI]) and fault diffusivity is 0.08–0.33 m 2 /s (90% CI), which is 2 orders of magnitude higher than the host rock diffusivity in some wells, thus highlighting the role of faults as fluid conduits.

Acceleration of Oxygen Ions in Dipolarization Events: 1. CPS Distributions

Abstract Using an MHD simulation of near tail reconnection associated with a flow burst and the collapse (dipolarization) of the inner tail in combination with test particle tracing we study the acceleration and flux increases of energetic oxygen ions (O + ). The characteristic orbits, distributions, and acceleration mechanisms are governed by the dimensionless parameter σ = ω ci t n , where ω ci is the ion gyro frequency and t n a characteristic Alfvén time of the MHD simulation. For σ < 1, central plasma sheet (CPS) populations after the passage of the dipolarization front are found to resemble half‐shells in velocity space oriented toward dusk. They originate from within the CPS and are energized typically by a single encounter of the region of enhanced cross‐tail electric field associated with the flow burst. For larger σ values ( σ > 1) the O + distributions resemble more closely those of protons, consisting of two counter‐streaming field‐aligned beams and an, albeit more tenuous and irregular, ring population perpendicular to the magnetic field. The existence of the beams, however, depends on suitable earthward moving source populations in the plasma sheet boundary layer or the adjacent lobes. The acceleration to higher energies is found to indicate a charge dependence, consistent with a dominance of more highly charged ions at energies of a few hundred keV. As in earlier simulations, the simulated fluxes show large anisotropies and nongyrotropic effects, phase bunching, and spatially and temporally localized beams.
