Stockpile Assessment (Quad Chart)

Our goal was to characterize certain aspects of shaped charges. In order to determine the pressure field created by the jet and the jet velocity, I worked with and modified simulations using CTH, a code developed at Sandia. I was able to manipulate and modify certain variables in order to observe their effects and measure the pressure and velocities at different points in the simulation.

Charting a Path for Research and Development of Reliability and Resilience in South Asia's Power Sector

The power sector in South Asia faces several trends with the potential to impact its reliability and resilience. Rapidly increasing demand, coupled with an increasing reliance on variable renewable resources and the circular linkages with climate change points to an increasing need to understand the extent of climate impacts on both the electricity load and the electricity generation. These larger shifts are also coupled with opportunities near the grid edge that could have a large impact on system planning and operations, such as electrification of the transport sector, increased reliance on buildings to serve a broader set of loads and be flexible resources for utilities, more efficient use of industrial and agricultural loads, and growth in distributed energy resources such as rooftop solar and batteries. It is critical that as this transformation takes place that expectations for reliability and resilience of the grid continue to increase in the region. The South Asia Group for Energy (SAGE), composed of USAID, the US Department of Energy, and three national laboratories, has been tasked with providing an overview of the research and development resources necessary to understand the upcoming challenges for the power system as it pertains to reliability and resilience. This discussion paper identifies some of the key trends and connections that are important for power sector reliability and resilience and provides a starting point for eliciting feedback from power sector stakeholders about their experiences and needs.

Doing Pandemic R&D as if There’s No Mañana: Charting a course to zig and zag our way out of the pandemonium we’re in

Since the beginnings of Sandia National Laboratories, Sandians have made the unthinkable not only thinkable, but also plannable and doable. Over time, we’ve tempered ourselves, studying and devising ways to deter, defend against, and blunt threats of mass death, destruction, and disruption. Now we, and all within our social circles, are living one of the nightmares that only a small fraction of our fellow Sandians have pondered, tackled, and anticipated––a virus that bypasses militaries, zips through borders, hitches to domestic travelers and commuters, makes its hosts unknowing dangers to others, overwhelms hospitals and clinics, hobbles governments, and takes away the lives and livelihoods of compromised and marginalized people everywhere. Taken by surprise, Sandians have dispersed and re-congregated into three interconnected camps. Those who determinedly and defiantly carry on with the work they’ve been doing since before the pandemic hit. Those who are doggedly mustering and redirecting their abilities, experience, education, and energies to get us to the other side of this crisis (without ending up on the Other Side in the process). And those who are in fight-or-flight mode because this virus is pushing them to their personal limits, directly threatening them and/or the lives, jobs, and businesses that matter to them. From these three camps (which some of us migrate between on a daily, hourly, or even minute-by-minute basis), we make our individual and collective attempts to hold it together, do our work, and live another day. While there is much about this that is beyond our control, we are anything but helpless. Each of us has specialized powers and influence that can be brought to bear on the big and small parts of this gnarly problem. It all starts with a personal and collective understanding of the situation we’re in.

Charting the unknown: A dive into the world of standards mapping

When you hear standards mapping what do you think about? For the Secure Software Central (SSC) project this means comparing our process to the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST) security control catalog. So how is it done? The project completed this summer can be broken down into three simple phases. Phase one consists of mapping the SSC process to the NIST’s security control catalog. While phase two entails mapping mitigations from a threat profile to NIST. Lastly phase three requires the creation of a knowledge base allowing for the reuse of controls across numerous projects This project presented a few different challenges: locating the correct control within the NIST catalog while correctly matching the proposed mitigations from the SSC team, accurately leveling the mitigation to the security level of the system, creating a toolbox to showcase a dataset of mitigations and standards to be used in current and future projects. each challenge allowed for opportunities in growth and understanding of how security controls can map to a governing set of standards. These standards maps are a crucial element to support the insights provided by the SSC team and allow the client to have confidence in the work being completed. My internship has allowed me to set and achieve many goals such as coming to understand that the field of cybersecurity truly is the right place for me. I have also learned that it’s ok to be wrong if you learn something from it. For significant accomplishments I have helped integrate standards mapping into the fabric of SSC. The field experience that I have gained such as interacting with the SSC team along with other senior staff and building a good rapport are crucial skills to. This time at PNNL has been an irreplaceable experience.

Charting a Path for Reliable, Resilient and Affordable Clean Energy: A Roadmap for Three Communities in Utah

The roadmap identifies strategies to align deployment of distributed energy resources with the continued growth of utility-scale solar. The strategies outlined in the roadmap have been developed through collaborative discussions with project partners, but may not represent the opinions of, or positions of, all partner organizations and parties involved in the "Renewable Energy Impacts and Solutions in Utah" project. Rather, the strategies outlined in this Roadmap represent a suite of tools and actions that Salt Lake City, Park City, and the City of Moab can consider as each city works towards their community renewable electricity goals. While this Roadmap was developed to inform three communities as they progress towards their specific community energy goals, much of the analysis presented in the roadmap was conducted for Utah as a whole. Other communities in Utah can use the scenarios and strategies outlined in the roadmap to leverage the full potential of distributed energy resources to provide benefits to the community.
