Characterization of Large Batch 14YWT Heat (NFA-2) for JOYO Irradiations (Rev.1)

The development and deployment of advanced cladding materials in advanced reactors requires the collection of relevant performance data for each cladding concept. Novel cladding concepts typically undergo significant innovation and iteration over the course of their development, and intention should be given to providing a snapshot of present performance. Thus, a modern heat of the nanostructured ferritic alloy (NFA) 14YWT is produced using state-of-the-art procedures for impurity minimization combined with thermomechanical processing methods designed to optimize fracture toughness, tensile strength, and ductility. This new heat of 14YWT, NFA-2, will provide the Advanced Fuels Campaign with adequate material for upcoming irradiation and mechanical testing campaigns. This report outlines procurement of new gas atomized 14YWT powder, production of four new bars of 14YWT, and subsequent mechanical and microstructural property characterization.

Humate Amendment Injection Viability Testing – Supplementary Batch Mixture and Soil Column Studies

Groundwater in the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ) in the Southern Sector of the M-Area Hazardous Waste management Facility (HWMF) is contaminated with chlorinated ethenes, including trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE). Treatment of contaminated groundwater with humic acid is being evaluated as a potential corrective action for these volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the LLAZ in Southern Sector (SRNS, 2019). Pilot scale injections of Huma-K brand humic acid for groundwater treatment were previously performed in M-Area between 2017 and 2020 (Amidon, 2023). Groundwater was extracted from the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ), then a solution of humate was mixed with recovered groundwater and subsequently re-injected into the same aquifer unit. Operations of the historical humate pilot testing were discontinued in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions, low injection rates, and recirculation fluid spillage. No further field scale or laboratory research to investigate humate amended groundwater injection was performed at the SRS until 2024. At the request of Area Completion Projects (ACP), the Savannah River National Laboratory (SRNL) performed supplementary testing to help determine the viability of further injection of humate as a remedial option for VOCs within the LLAZ in the Southern Sector of the M-Area HWMF.

Batch Test Analysis of Potential Treatment Technologies for Cyanide Groundwater Remediation

In addressing groundwater contamination, several remediation technologies are widely employed, including ion exchange (IX) resins and other adsorbents in pump-and-treat (P&T) facilities. However, many sites do not have the complex nature of the Hanford Site – a legacy production site that is part of the U.S. Department of Energy nuclear weapons complex. The Hanford Site covers an area of nearly 1,500 km 2 and has various inorganic and organic contaminants. One contaminant of concern in the Hanford Site’s Central Plateau is cyanide, particularly in the recalcitrant form of ferrocyanide. While ferrocyanide is often considered a stable complex, it can release free cyanide under certain conditions and presents challenges when testing for cyanide as a total cyanide analysis cannot differentiate between complexed and free cyanide.

Evaluation of Pu Solubility in Glass for Sludge Batch 11

Stainless-steel clad Pu from Japan’s Fast Critical Assembly (FCA) reactor is currently being dispositioned at the Savannah River Site. The electrolytic dissolver, operated by Savannah River Nuclear Solutions in H-Canyon, is being utilized to dissolve the material. The resulting solutions are transferred to the Concentration, Storage, and Transfer Facilities, operated by Savannah River Mission Completion (SRMC), for subsequent vitrification at the Defense Waste Processing Facility (DWPF). In support of the FCA mission startup, a preliminary evaluation was conducted by the Savannah River National Laboratory to assess the impact of the FCA discards on the liquid waste system.

MONet/1000 Soils metagenome pathway modelling narrative w/ auto batch import

This narrative performs metabolic modeling and flux balance analysis (FBA) using metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) from the 1000 Soils samples, as described by Song et al. (2026, accepted). The set of MAGs (in FASTA format) is converted into a set of assembly objects compatible with functional annotation via RASTtk, yielding a set of genome objects that undergo metabolic modeling via OMEGGA. These genome objects are then used to conduct FBA, generating tables of metabolite uptake rates across the MAGs under investigation.

Image Data Processing System (IDAPS) user manual, S-056 experiment. Volume 1: System description. Volume 2: Batch IDAPS. Volume 3: Interactive IDAPS

Image data processing system (IDAPS) developed to satisfy the image processing requirements of the Skylab S-056 experiment is described. The S-056 experiment was designed to obtain high-resolution photographs of the sun in the far ultraviolet, or soft X-ray, portion of the electromagnetic spectrum. Thirty-five thousand photographs were obtained by the three flights of the program; and, faced with such a massive volume of imagery, the designers of the experiment decided to develop a computer-based system which would reduce the image processing workload. The purpose of the IDAPS User Manual is to give the IDAPS user the necessary information and instructions to effectively utilize the system.

A comparison of time-shared vs. batch development of space software

In connection with a study regarding the ground support software development for the Space Shuttle, an investigation was conducted concerning the most suitable software development techniques to be employed. A time-sharing 'trial period' was used to determine whether or not time-sharing would be a cost-effective software development technique for the Ground Based Shuttle system. It was found that time-sharing substantially improved job turnaround and programmer access to the computer for the representative group of ground support programmers. Moreover, this improvement resulted in an estimated saving of over fifty programmer days during the trial period.

User's instructions for the Grodins' respiratory control model using the UNIVAC 1110 remote batch and demand processing

The transient and steady state response of the respiratory control system for variations in volumetric fractions of inspired gases and special system parameters are modeled. The program contains the capability to change workload. The program is based on Grodins' respiratory control model and can be envisioned as a feedback control system comprised of a plant (the controlled system) and the regulating component (controlling system). The controlled system is partitioned into 3 compartments corresponding to lungs, brain, and tissue with a fluid interconnecting patch representing the blood.

User's instructions for the Guyton circulatory dynamics model using the Univac 1110 batch and demand processing (with graphic capabilities)

The model presents a systems analysis of a human circulatory regulation based almost entirely on experimental data and cumulative present knowledge of the many facets of the circulatory system. The model itself consists of eighteen different major systems that enter into circulatory control. These systems are grouped into sixteen distinct subprograms that are melded together to form the total model. The model develops circulatory and fluid regulation in a simultaneous manner. Thus, the effects of hormonal and autonomic control, electrolyte regulation, and excretory dynamics are all important and are all included in the model.

Development of acceptance criteria for batches of silane primer for external tank thermal protection system bonding applications

Silane primers for use as thermal protection on external tanks were subjected to various analytic techniques to determine the most effective testing method for silane lot evaluation. The analytic methods included high performance liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, thermogravimetry (TGA), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). It is suggested that FTIR be used as the method for silane lot evaluation. Chromatograms, TGA profiles, bar graphs showing IR absorbances, and FTIR spectra are presented.

Development of acceptance criteria for batches of silane primer for external tank thermal protection system bonding applications

Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy is currently the best technique for observing hydrolytic changes in DC 1200 silane the primers caused by moisture in the atmosphere. To further prove that FTIR can be used as a criterion test for acceptance of silane primer lots, intensities of the FTIR OH- band are being compared with primer adhesive bond strength using a mechanical test suggested by NASA. Results of tests for shear strength and Oh-absorption are tabulated and compared with FTIR absorption intensities in the OH-region.

Batch Gas-Sampling System

Sampler collects air or other gases in consistent way and stabilizes them for later chemical analysis. Device used for concentrations ranging from few parts per million to 100 percent. Also separates and collects particles in gas for analysis. Gas flows into vacuum sphere when solenoid valve opened. As it passes through conversion tube, constituent of gas forms stable compound that remains in conversion tube for analysis at later time. Sampler parts made of glass, polytetrafluoroethylene, and stainless steel so they do not react with sample.

Fed-batch control based upon the measurement of intracellular NADH

A series of experiments demonstrating that on-line measurements of intracellular NADH by culture fluorescence can be used to monitor and control the fermentation process are described. A distinct advantage of intercellular NADH measurements over other monitoring techniques such as pH and dissolved oxygen is that it directly measures real time events occurring within the cell rather than changes in the environment. When coupled with other measurement parameters, it can provide a finer degree of sophistication in process control.
