Low voltage AC electroluminescence in silicon MOS capacitors

Low power silicon based light source and detector are attractive for on-chip photonic circuits given their ease of process integration. However, conventional silicon light emitting diodes emit photons with energies near the band edge where the corresponding silicon photodetectors lack responsivity. On the other hand, previously reported hot carrier electroluminescent silicon devices utilizing a reverse biased diode require high operating voltages. Here, we investigate hot carrier electroluminescence in silicon metal–oxide–semiconductor capacitors operating under transient voltage conditions. Further, during each voltage transient, large energy band bending is created at the edge of the source contact, much larger than what is achievable at a steady state. As a result, electrons and holes are injected efficiently from a single source contact into the silicon channel at the corresponding voltage transient, where they subsequently undergo impact ionization and phonon-assisted interband recombination. Notably, we show low voltage operation down to 2.8 V by using a 20 nm thick high-κ gate dielectric. We show further voltage scaling is possible by reducing the gate dielectric thickness, thus presenting a low voltage platform for silicon optoelectronic integrated circuits.

Anisotropic time-dependent London approach: Application to the ac response in the Meissner state

The anisotropic London equations taking into account the normal currents are derived and applied to the problem of the surface impedance in the Meissner state of anisotropic materials. It is shown that the complex susceptibility of the anisotropic slab depends on the orientation of the applied microwave field relative to the crystal axes. In particular, the anisotropic sample in the microwave field is subject to a torque, unless the field is directed along one of the crystal principle axes.

Fractional AC Josephson effect in a topological insulator proximitized by a self-formed superconductor

A lateral Josephson junction in which the surface of a 3D topological insulator serves as the weak link should support topologically protected excitations related to Majorana fermions. The resulting 4π-periodic current-phase relationship could be detected under high-frequency excitation by the suppression of odd Shapiro steps. Here, in this study, we demonstrate such devices through the self-formation of a Pd-Te superconducting layer from a telluride topological insulator, and observe suppressed first and third Shapiro steps. Other devices, including those where the Pd-Te layer is bolstered by an additional Al layer, show no suppression of Shapiro steps, a difference supported by simulations. Though we rule out the known trivial causes of suppressed Shapiro steps in our devices, we nevertheless argue that corroborating measurements and disorder-aware theoretical descriptions of these systems are needed before confidently claiming the observation of Majorana states.

Optimal Network Topology for Node-Breaker Representations With AC Power Flow Constraints

It has been demonstrated that network topology optimization (NTO) may change the topology of power system networks, and consequently, provide additional flexibility to reduce network congestion and violations. Most NTO problems are formulated based on the bus-branch model in which it is challenging to represent a realistic picture of all substation configurations. In this paper, we explore advantages of substation reconfiguration modeling based on node-breaker representations for NTO problem with full nonlinear alternating current power flow. It also proposes a tailored solution algorithm to solve this nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming through the outer approximation method. The proposed solution approach iterates between a mixed-integer linear programming and a nonlinear subproblem. Additional enhancements to further accelerate the iteration process are illustrated. Numerical case studies demonstrate the relative economic and operational impact of optimal network topology with node-breaker representations.

Distributed Secondary Control of Grid-Forming Inverters and AC Microgrids: Impacts of Voltage Feedback Choices

In this paper, the operational choices in distributed secondary control are examined, and their impacts on grid-forming (GFM) inverters and grid operation are investigated. In particular, the effects of feedback voltage choices, either average voltage feedback (AVF) or terminal voltage feedback (TVF), are studied with respect to reactive power sharing, voltage regulation, and grid-forming operation during black start. The secondary control used is a subgradient-based distributed cooperative control, and it provides the voltage, angle, and frequency references to the GFM inverters and their primary tracking controls. The overall control architecture employs multi-rate sampling such that the secondary control is slower than the primary control. The operational choices and their control performance are illustrated using a four-GFM-inverter microgrid in MATLAB/SIMULINK. Furthermore, the results show the effectiveness of the secondary controller, and several conclusions are drawn on the voltage feedback signals as the design choices.

Evaluation of AC optimal power flow on graphical processing units

This paper investigates the performance of alternating current optimal power flow (ACOPF) on hardware accelerators such as graphical processing units (GPUs). We describe the strategies employed and the software used to port the ACOPF application to GPU. Through reorganizing the flow of fundamental calculations, restructuring data organization for the GPUs, and using portability libraries, maximum utilization of GPU is attempted. We present details of our efforts with representative results on 200, 500, and 2000-bus networks.

EMT and Phasor-Domain Co-simulation of a Low Frequency AC Transmission System for Offshore Wind Integration

This work investigates system level interactions of multi-terminal low frequency high-voltage alternating current (LF-HVac) system using back-to back converters and grid-level 60 Hz system. A co-simulation framework by integrating high- fidelity dynamic model of multi-terminal LF-HVac system in electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation platform and phasor model of IEEE 39 bus system in transient-stability (phasor) program. The co-simulation framework for multi-terminal LF- HVac system with offshore wind integrated in a bulk power system is developed successfully and its steady state and dynamic operation is demonstrated and compared with EMT simulation. The co-simulation results show accurate representation of the dynamic responses with reduced computation burden and time compared to EMT platform.

Critical Current Densities and n-Values of MgB 2 Conductors for SMES, MRI, and Low AC Loss Applications

Multifilamentary MgB 2 strands (filament numbers 36 to 114) prepared by the in-situ power-in-tube (PIT) route with carbon doping contents of 0, 2, and 3.2% were wound on barrels for transport J c and n -value measurement at 4.2 K in fields of up to 12 T. The strand and gauge lengths were 1 m and 0.5 m. Heat treatments at 675 °C and 650 °C centered around the melting point of Mg (650 °C) and both utilized the liquid-solid reaction. A pair of strands, with and without 2% C doping exhibited the J c (B) crossover effect. Here studied were the dependencies of J c on field strength, dopant concentration, and cabling and the dependence of n -value on field strength.
