A RELAP5-3D Model of the Lobo Lead Loop

The goal of our research is to build upon the capability of RELAP5-3D to model molten lead systems. Molten lead has several potential uses in future advanced reactors like the lead fast reactor or fusion reactors that utilize dual-coolant lead lithium blankets. This potential for use in future generations of reactors highlights the necessity to develop molten lead models to ensure that they can accurately predict the thermohydraulic behavior. We have developed a RELAP5-3D model of the Lobo Lead Loop facility, located at the University of New Mexico, to verify the accuracy of RELAP5-3D via comparison to existing computational fluid dynamics results and analytical calculations. It was found that RELAP5-3D accurately calculated radiative heat transfer (within < 1%) when compared to theoretical calculations. In addition, pressure drop calculations done in RELAP5-3D demonstrated reasonable agreement within 20 kPa, mostly within ~7-15%, when compared to the computational fluid dynamics model of the facility developed by the University of New Mexico, and captured the dependence of pressure drop on flow velocity accurately. Finally, a hypothetical loss of flow transient was imposed on the RELAP5-3D model to determine the feasibility of performing a similar experiment with the Lobo Lead Loop. It was found that such an experiment could be possible as the RELAP5-3D model indicated that the temperatures of the fluid would not exceed limiting temperatures of the structure (1658 K) nor the maximum temperature of the electromagnetic pump inlet (823 K). Although there is not experimental data to begin validation, the model will be readily available for future validation studies when the experimental data is generated, especially as the model continues to evolve over time. Furthermore, the results so far demonstrate a promising first step in the verification/validation of the RELAP5-3D model of the Lobo Lead Loop.

Shining light on nanoscale ‘vine-on-stick’ eutectic structures in the Al-Ce-Ni system

Multiphase eutectics often comprise entangled solid phases with nanoscale periodicity, making it difficult to unravel their 3D connectivity using conventional 2D techniques. Among such systems, the three-phase eutectic Al-Al 11 Ce 3 -Al 3 Ni stands out for its ultrafine (∼100 nm) interphase spacing and promising creep resistance, yet its microstructure remains relatively unexplored despite its potential for high-temperature applications. Here, we use scanning hard X-ray microscopy with an unprecedented ∼10 nm pixel size to resolve its 3D morphology. Reconstructions reveal a novel “vine-on-stick” motif, wherein Al 11 Ce 3 wraps around Al 3 Ni pillars. Analysis of phase tortuosities confirms that Al 11 Ce 3 exhibits more convoluted morphologies than Al 3 Ni. No orientation relationship was observed between the two intermetallics, suggesting that growth is controlled by local solute gradients rather than epitaxy. Fragmentation of intermetallics along their longitudinal axis suggests a Rayleigh-type breakup mechanism in solid state. The “vine-on-stick” pattern may generalize to other alloy systems with variable interfacial anisotropies and low mutual solubilities.

Subgrain geometrically necessary dislocation density mapping in spalled Ta in three dimensions

Here, in this work, the intragranular distributions of the densities of geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) generated in a polycrystalline tantalum (Ta) sample loaded in shock compression to spall are investigated. The sample studied is a highly resolved three-dimensional (3D) map of the orientations, grain boundary morphology, and voids across a 0.276mm 3 (with sample dimensions of 688.5µm x 669µm x 600µm) region of the microstructure about the spall plane obtained by TriBeam tomography. We present a formulation for calculating the crystallographic screw and edge character GND densities at a material point within body centered cubic (BCC) crystals when provided any number of potential slip systems or modes. Combining the 3D characterization, GND formulation, and a sample containing ≈ 6000 grains, we sought statistically relevant correlations between GND density per grain with grain size, grain orientation, void formation, and proximity from the spall plane. We show that GND density per grain increases with decreasing distance from the spall plane. Most grains had heterogeneously distributed GND densities but were free of any detectable voids, at least within the ≈ 1.5µm resolution of the characterization technique. It is found that the GND density for most grains is insensitive to grain size and grain orientation. Only the fraction of grains with the highest GND densities tended to have a [001] parallel to shock-direction orientation. Intragranular 3D maps of GNDs reveals that grains that contain voids have high GND density concentrations in the intragranular region immediately surrounding the void. The local intragranular GND mapping also showed voids that are connected to grain boundaries preferred to grow into the grain with the larger size, regardless of orientation.

Supercritical Reforming of Wet Ethanol for High Efficiency Direct-injection Heavy-duty Compression-ignition Engines

The purpose of the research was to investigate the potential of using a mature bio-fuel in heavy-duty compression ignition engines. By co-optimizing both the fuel characteristics and engine system the potential for a superior outcome was demonstrated. The use of wet bio-ethanol eliminates the majority of the energy intensive distilling and dehydrating fuel production processes, which moves the fuel towards carbon neutral and also lowers the fuel costs. The relatively high water content of the resulting fuel is leveraged in the proposed novel combustion system by incorporating an integrated high efficiency exhaust waste heat recovery system. This results in significantly higher thermal efficiency. In addition the combustion system features low criteria pollutant emissions and the potential to reduce the initial cost of the engine system hardware. Substantial societal benefits are demonstrated through the co-optimization of the fuel and engine system. A computational proof-of-concept study has been performed to demonstrate the potential benefits of a novel wet ethanol heavy-duty compression ignition combustion system featuring integrated exhaust waste heat recovery. A combined in-cylinder closed cycle 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) - 1D engine system simulation approach was used. The models were validated to baseline engine data using diesel fuel and then applied to the wet ethanol study. The original concept was to maximize exhaust waste heat recovery through supercritical reforming of the wet ethanol fuel. Phase I simulation results indicated that the optimal solution for maximum engine efficiency gains were realized through maximizing thermo-mechanical recuperation with negligible fuel reformation. The results show the potential to achieve impressive gains in brake thermal efficiency (BTE) over the base diesel engine. The potential to increase BTE up to 20.9% over the base diesel engine was demonstrated, with even larger gains possible through reduced in-cylinder heat transfer losses. The majority of the efficiency gains were realized through integrated high efficiency exhaust waste heat recovery. The concept also has the potential to achieve future ultra-low NO x emissions standards and negligible engine-out soot emissions. The mixing controlled combustion of high temperature wet ethanol features relatively low engine-out NO x emissions without the need for exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The soot free combustion enabled by the relatively high oxygen content of ethanol also allows for the use of stoichiometric mixing controlled combustion, which is not practical with diesel fuel. When stoichiometric combustion is used a simple passive 3-way catalyst can be used for exhaust emissions after-treatment and near zero tailpipe emissions. The Phase I simulations results have defined the system layout and requirements in preparation for the Phase II experimental proof-of-concept study. The potential applications of the research include most current applications of diesel engines. The Phase I study focused on heavy-duty on-highway class 8 trucks. However, virtually any application that requires highly efficient clean power generation would benefit from the novel engine system proposed. The results indicate substantial fuel cost savings and reduced greenhouse gas emissions with similar or reduced initial system hardware costs compared to modern diesel engine systems.

Identification of multiple eigenmode growth rates towards real time detection in DIII-D and KSTAR tokamak plasmas

Abstract The successful application of three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) spectroscopy enables us to identify the multi-mode eigenvalues in DIII-D and KSTAR tokamak experiments with stable plasmas. The temporal evolution of the multi-modes’ stabilities have been detected. The new method is numerically efficient allowing the real time detection of MHD modes’ stabilities during the discharge. The method performs active detection of the plasma stability by utilizing the upper and lower rows of internal non-axisymmetric coils to apply a wide variety of 3D fields. Multi-mode eigenvalues are extracted using subspace system identification of the plasma response measured by 3D-field magnetic sensors distributed at different poloidal locations. The equivalence of this new method with the one introduced by Wang (2019 Nucl. Fusion 59 024001) has been numerically corroborated. The more robust and efficient calculation developed here will enable real time monitoring of the plasma stability based on the extracted eigenvalues of stable modes.

Large Area Projection Sintering Technology Development (CRADA Final Report)

This CRADA was formed through support of the Innovation Crossroads program, which has been an invaluable experience for Ascend Manufacturing and our additive manufacturing technology. Without Innovation Crossroads, the research, capital and operational requirements to develop our company would have been too high and Ascend Manufacturing simply would not exist. Our patented and federally funded technology would have gone to waste. Through this CRADA, Ascend has been able to collaborate with the worlds experts in additive manufacturing to assist in developing our state of the art technology. This project assisted in developing a fully scalable 3D printing process, developed an industrial and pilot system design, assisted in the fabrication of a pilot system, allowing us to print components with materials impossible by any other 3D printing process. This work has allowed us to achieve significant follow-on funding to fully commercialize this highly capable manufacturing technology.
