The Role of Nuclear Data Sensitivities in Prompt α-Eigenvalue Predictions of Delayed Critical Benchmarks

Alpha (α) eigenvalues, which describe the logarithmic time derivative of the neutron population in a multiplying system, are integral to time-dependent behavior and diagnostic applications. However, uncertainties in the evaluated nuclear data can significantly impact the accuracy of transport simulations for such quantities. This work explores the use of machine learning models to predict two key outputs, α-eigenvalues and keff bias, using input features derived from α-eigenvalue sensitivities to nuclear data. The criticality safety benchmark models used in this study come from the International Handbook of Evaluated Criticality Safety Benchmark Experiments. Three models, random forest, XGBoost, and NGBoost, are trained on both energy-resolved and energy-summed α sensitivities. For the α-eigenvalue bias prediction, NGBoost achieved the highest R 2 (0.9476) using energy-resolved features, while XGBoost performed best using summed sensitivities. In contrast, when predicting the keff bias, all the models showed moderate predictive capability (best R 2 ≈ 0.72), as the mapping from the static α-sensitivities to the static keff bias was less direct. SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations) analysis was used to interpret the model predictions. Across both prediction tasks, the features associated with neutron capture [H-1 (n, γ)], uranium scattering reactions (such as 235 U elastic/inelastic), and actinide capture/fission reactions (such as 239 Pu and 234 U) were consistently identified as the most impactful. This highlights the key role of specific nuclear reactions and energy ranges in shaping both time-dependent and steady-state criticality behavior. These results demonstrated that α-sensitivities, despite being computed for time-dependent metrics, can provide valuable insights for predicting both α-eigenvalues and the keff bias. Moreover, machine learning models offer a promising pathway for uncovering important nuclear data dependencies and guiding future data evaluation efforts.

Nuclear quantum effects in molecular liquids across chemical space

Abstract Nuclear quantum effects (NQEs) influence many physical and chemical phenomena, particularly those involving light atoms or occurring at low temperatures. However, their impact has been carefully quantified in few systems-like water-and is rarely considered more broadly. Here we use path-integral molecular dynamics to systematically investigate NQEs on thermophysical properties of 92 organic liquids at ambient conditions. Depending on chemical constitution, we find substantial impact across thermal expansivity, compressibility, dielectric constant, enthalpy of vaporization, and notably molar volume, which shows consistent, positive quantum-classical differences up to 5%; similar, less pronounced trends manifest as isotope effects from deuteration. Using data-driven analysis, we identify three features-molar mass, classical hydrogen density, and classical thermal expansivity-that accurately predict NQEs and facilitate understanding of how characteristics like branching and heteroatom content influence behavior. This work highlights the broad relevance of NQEs in molecular liquids, while also providing a conceptual and practical framework to anticipate their impact.

Design of monolithic piezoelectric bimorph mirrors made from lithium niobate

Recent advances in deformable mirrors based on monolithic piezoelectric substrates, such as lithium niobate, have the potential to improve the image quality of X-ray optical systems on synchrotron and free-electron laser beamlines and microscopes. However, the quantitative relationship between design parameters and the deformed shape has not been readily available in the literature. We present an analytical model, validated through finite element analysis, enabling calculation of tangential and sagittal curvatures based on mirror dimensions, crystallographic orientation, and applied voltage. We demonstrate that through the selection of material orientation, it is possible to achieve different deformed shapes (sphere, cylinder, or hyperbolic paraboloid). This methodology can be generalized to other piezoelectric materials and substrate-integrated actuator systems.

Strategic Melamine Coating on Lithium Metal for Li 3 N-Rich Solid Electrolyte Interphase and Improved Battery Cycling Stability

The practical applications of lithium (Li) metal batteries (LMBs) are limited by challenges such as dendrite formation and unstable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI), especially at higher C-rates. Here, this study introduces melamine-coated Li metal anodes (LMAs), forming a Li 3 N-rich SEI layer that improves ionic conductivity and mechanical stability. The optimized melamine-coated LMA demonstrated uniform coverage resulting in denser Li deposition, nearly doubled cycle life (~148 cycles at 0.5 C, 1C = 4.1 mA cm -2 ), compared to Bare-Li. These findings emphasize that coating materials-induced beneficial SEI components could lead to improvement of LMB performance.

Strong Kitaev Interaction in BaCo 2⁢ (AsO 4 ) 2

The inelastic neutron scattering results and their analysis unequivocally point to a dominant Kitaev interaction in the honeycomb-lattice cobaltate BaCo 2 ⁢(AsO 4 ) 2 . Our anisotropic-exchange model closely describes all available neutron scattering data in the material’s field-polarized phase. Furthermore, the density-matrix renormalization group results for our model are in close accord with the unusual double-zigzag magnetic order and the low in-plane saturation field of BaCo 2 ⁢(AsO 4 ) 2 .

Tuning Anisotropic Optical Properties of Inorganic and Hybrid Organic–Inorganic MXenes via Topochemical Surface Modification

Surface groups are central to the properties of MXenes, yet their role in optical anisotropy remains largely unexplored. Here, we use a topochemical route to synthesize single crystals of stacked Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 and hybrid organic–inorganic MXenes (h-MXenes) with lateral sizes of 38–75 μm, rotational registry, and tunable interlayer spacing. Solid-state NMR spectroscopy shows that topochemical substitution generates mixed amido, imido, and hydride surface motifs, which modify the electronic structure of the Ti 3 C 2 inorganic core. Imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry with micron-scale spatial resolution enables reconstruction of the complex dielectric tensor of individual multilayer crystals. Ti 3 C 2 Cl 2 exhibits a type-II hyperbolicity above 930 nm, whereas h-MXenes do not display hyperbolicity within the measured 300–1700 nm window, instead showing reduced in-plane conductivity, suppressed out-of-plane light absorption, and a chain-length-dependent blue shift of a near-infrared absorption feature. These results demonstrate topochemical surface modification as a direct handle for engineering MXenes as surface-programmable optical media.

Insights into elevated temperature tensile deformation mechanisms and kink banding in additively manufactured tungsten

Additive manufacturing (AM) potentially enables fabrication and repair of plasma facing components (PFCs) of tungsten. However, deformation mechanisms in AM-fabricated tungsten under service-relevant thermomechanical conditions remain unknown majorly due to challenges in achieving crack-free W. This study reveals the deformation mechanisms operative under tension at 800 °C and 1200 °C in the electron beam melting powder bed fusion (EBM-PBF) fabricated W. Textured columnar grains with mixed <001 >/<111 >|| build-direction were observed. Strong anisotropy in tensile properties persisted across test temperatures, and all specimens exhibited extensive deformation-induced banding phenomena. Grain boundary character analysis of the deformed specimens indicated that these deformation bands were kink bands with tilt grain boundaries prominently present at the band-matrix interface. Interestingly, the material within the kink bands rotated toward higher resolved shear stress, providing insights into the origins of kink band formation in body-centered cubic refractory metals. Intragranular misorientation axis analysis revealed that plasticity was dominated by {110} <111 > slip at 800 °C, whereas additional (213)[11⁢̄1] and (112)[11⁢̄1] slip systems activated at 1200 °C. A dense low-angle boundary networks observed near fractured surface indicated the onset of dynamic recrystallization. Results reveal plasticity governing mechanisms in AM-fabricated W under power plant-relevant conditions, and provide insights into kink band attributes in refractory metals.

Comparing the fluorination of Pb+ and Po+: insights into p-block relativistic effects for superheavy elements

It is expected that the chemical properties of the heaviest of the superheavy elements (SHEs, = 113 – 118) do not align with what is suggested by their current positions on the periodic table. Specifically, the onset of significant relativistic effects, including increased spin–orbit splitting of the p-orbitals may lead to enhanced stability of low-oxidation states. Notably, it is predicted that flerovium ( = 114) may exhibit pseudo-noble gas behavior from a electron configuration that acts as an ‘inert pair’. Even though it is expected that the – splitting becomes pronounced toward the end of the p-block’s sixth row, there is currently limited experimental evidence to confirm its extent or impact. Here, the production of gas-phase lead ( = 82) and polonium ( = 84) fluoride cations (PbF and PoF ) were compared to elucidate differences in accessible oxidation states. The PoF and PbF species were produced and identified with the FIONA spectrometer at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory 88-Inch Cylctron Facility. Polonium showed notably different fluorination chemistry than lead, producing PoF and PoF as primary products compared to lead’s PbF and PbF . The distribution of PoF products observed offer insights as to the role of spin–orbit splitting for polonium. Similar studies of superheavy elements would elucidate the accessibility of their low-oxidation states as well as to inform chemical predictions for eighth-row elements not yet discovered.

Interactions Between Climate Policy and Technology-influenced Travel Behavior: Mitigating Induced Demand from CACC

Advances in vehicle technology have influenced the development of automated vehicle systems, where vehicles that do not require human intervention are already deployed in the roadway networks. While these advances are proved to increase roadway safety and highway capacity, more research is needed to understand the long-term and regional-level impacts on mobility, land use, energy consumption, and emissions. This study proposes a multi-model approach to analyze the effect of vehicle automation and deep decarbonization policies over a period from 2020 to 2040 in Austin, Texas. We use the Global Change Analysis Model (GCAM) to develop internally the scenarios that are then passed to the SMART Mobility modeling workflow, a large-scale simulation framework combining the POLARIS activity-based travel demand model and mesoscopic traffic simulator with the Autonomie vehicle energy consumption model and the UrbanSim land use simulator. Results suggest that the introduction of vehicles with advanced automation could increase fuel consumption when no decarbonization policies are implemented. Also, advances in vehicle technology research and development could lead to a decline in energy use in the long-term. Energy pricing and vehicle electrification incentives could help reduce the impact of vehicle automation. Finally, our analysis indicates the relevance of introducing land use processes in longterm vehicle automation studies.
