First-Principles Studies of Tritium Species Diffusivity Across the Interface of Nickel-Plated Zircaloy-4

α-Zr and its alloys are known as best 3 H getters due to their excellent corrosion resistance under chemically corrosive environment, low thermal neutron absorption cross-section and robust mechanical strength at high temperature. In this work, we conducted a systematic study on constructing and optimizing Ni and Zr surfaces, interfacing the stable Ni and Zr surfaces to create an optimal Ni-Zr interface, and an understanding the diffusion mechanisms for 3 H across Ni(111)-Zr(0001) interface with and without vacancies and impurities such as Sn and O.

Grain boundary self-diffusion and point defect interactions in α -U via molecular dynamics

Though metallic U-Zr fuel has been used in nuclear reactors since the 1960s, many of its fundamental and thermodynamic properties are still unknown. The a-U phase, which has a highly anisotropic crystal structure and physical properties, is present in U-Zr fuel. The character and behavior of a-U grain boundaries will strongly impact fuel thermophysical performance under irradiation. Here, we study the interaction of point defects with grain boundaries, diffusion along grain boundaries, and the predicted diffusional creep behavior of a-U via molecular dynamics. We calculate the segregation energy of vacancies and interstitials to grain boundaries and quantify the biased sink strength of the grain boundaries, and observe that this sink strength is not strongly dependent on the grain boundary orientation. We also find that grain boundary diffusivity is strongly dependent on the grain boundary energy and grain boundary orientation. The presence of point defects within the grain boundary can induce diffusion in grain boundaries with low formation energies and can enhance diffusion in high-energy grain boundaries. We also find that diffusional creep of a-U at prototypical metallic fuel operation conditions is extremely high and could help explain observed metallic fuel swelling behaviors.

A Library of Atomically Thin 2D Materials Featuring the Conductive-Point Resistive Switching Phenomenon

Non-volatile resistive switching (NVRS) is a widely available effect in transitional metal oxides, colloquially known as memristors, and of broad interest for memory technology and neuromorphic computing. Until recently, NVRS was not known in other transitional metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), an important material class owing to their atomic thinness enabling the ultimate dimensional scaling. Here, various monolayer or few-layer 2D materials are presented in the conventional vertical structure that exhibit NVRS, including TMDs (MX 2 , M = transitional metal, e.g., Mo, W, Re, Sn, or Pt; X = chalcogen, e.g., S, Se, or Te), TMD heterostructure (WS2/MoS2), and an atomically thin insulator (h-BN). These results indicate the universality of the phenomenon in 2D non-conductive materials, and feature low switching voltage, large ON/OFF ratio, and forming-free characteristic. A dissociation–diffusion–adsorption model is proposed, attributing the enhanced conductance to metal atoms/ions adsorption into intrinsic vacancies, a conductive-point mechanism supported by first-principle calculations and scanning tunneling microscopy characterizations. Our results motivate further research in the understanding and applications of defects in 2D materials.

Microstructure-Dependent Rate Theory Model of Radiation-Induced Segregation in Binary Alloys

Conventional rate theory often uses the mean field concept to describe the effect of inhomogeneous microstructures on the evolution of radiation induced defect and solute/fission product segregation. However, the spatial and temporal evolution of defects and solutes determines the formation and spatial distribution of radiation-induced second phase such as precipitates and gas bubbles/voids, especially in materials with complicated microstructures and subject to high dose radiation. In this work, a microstructure-dependent model of radiation-induced segregation (RIS) has been developed to investigate the effect of inhomogeneous thermodynamic and kinetics properties of defects on diffusion and accumulations of solute A in AB binary alloys. Four independent concentrations: atom A, interstitial A, interstitial B, and vacancy on [A, B] sublattice are used as field variables to describe temporal and spatial distribution and evolution of defects and solute A. The independent concentrations of interstitial A and interstitial B allow to describe their different generation rates, thermodynamic and kinetic properties, and release the assumptions of interstitial generation and sink strength used in the conventional rate theory. Microstructure and concentration dependent chemical potentials of defects are used to calculate the driving forces of defect diffusions. With the model, the effects of defect chemical potentials and mobilities on the RIS in polycrystalline AB model alloys have been simulated. The results demonstrated the model capability in predicting defect evolution in materials with inhomogeneous thermodynamic and kinetic properties of defects. The model can be extended to materials with complicated microstructures such as a wide range of grain size distribution, coating structure and multiphases as well as radiation-induced precipitation subject to severe radiation damage.

Point defect evolution under irradiation: Finite size effects and spatio-temporal correlations

The evolution of point defect concentrations under irradiation is controlled by their diffusion properties, and by their formation and elimination mechanisms. The latter includes the mutual recombination of vacancies and interstitials, and the elimination of point defects at sinks. Two models are traditionally used to predict the defect concentration evolution, the standard rate theory (SRT) and the atomistic kinetic Monte Carlo (AKMC). We show in this work a large discrepancy in the defect concentrations between both methods when the average number of defects in the AKMC simulation box is close or lower than one. The reason is that AKMC naturally captures strong space and time correlations between vacancies and interstitials generated by the finite size of the periodic simulation box. These correlations strongly affect the recombination rate and the point defect concentrations. SRT fails to predict such correlations, and the corresponding solution deviates from the more accurate solution given by the AKMC simulation under similar conditions. These finite size correlation effects are strong when the elimination of point defects occurs by recombination only, but can still be significant in the presence of sinks. In order to account for the spacio-temporal correlation in a continuum framework, we introduce a Correlated Pair Theory (CPT). This theory fully takes into account the correlations between vacancy and interstitial pairs and predicts point defect concentrations in good agreement with AKMC simulations. Inversely, if the goal is for the AKMC to reproduce defect concentrations in bulk using small simulation boxes, the naturally occurring correlations need to be corrected. We show here that the CPT can be used to modify the elimination rates in the AKMC simulations, so as to yield point defect concentrations in agreement with SRT.

A kinetic model for simulating non-equilibrium mass transport in oxides applied to hematite growth under irradiation

We propose an approach to simulating the dynamic evolution and transport of charged point defects within and through the oxide scales that form during corrosion. The method follows the cluster dynamics formalism widely adopted for radiation damage in solids, which can apply in both quasi-static and far from equilibrium conditions, such as in radiation environments. By treating each charged defect as a cluster of an atomic defect and associated unit charges, the proposed model flexibly allows charge state transitions and shifts in the Fermi level by absorption and emission of charge carriers from point defects in a reaction network with rates constrained by local equilibrium. Applying this model to hematite predicts changes in self-diffusion and oxidation kinetics in irradiation environments, surprisingly showing reduced oxidation rates in many conditions, despite enhanced self-diffusion. In conclusion, the origin of this effect lies in a change in Fermi level induced by excess vacancies formed under irradiation, which in turn suppresses the transport of cation interstitials which facilitate hematite growth.

Interstitialcy-mediated transport in Hematite

Defect transport mechanisms drive the performance of materials in both energy storage and energy generating systems. Iron oxide systems are of particular interest with use cases in both realms. Previous studies of a-Fe2O3 (hematite) determined that the primary point defects at elevated temperature are O vacancies and Fe interstitials, and these defects determine transport rates at temperatures >850°C. However, in advanced nuclear reactor designs, operating temperatures will range between 400-800°C. In this study, we utilize isotopic tracers and the nanoscale resolution of atom probe tomography to determine diffusivities at lower temperatures relevant to nuclear energy generating systems. Supported by a density functional theory informed rate theory model, we find a change from vacancy to interstitialcy-mediated transport < 800°C in the anion lattice.

Solid-State Calcium-Ion Diffusion in Ca 1.5 Ba 0.5 Si 5 O 3 N 6

Rechargeable batteries based on multivalent working ions are promising candidates for next-generation high-energy-density batteries. Development of these technologies, however, is largely limited by the low diffusion rate of multivalent ions in solid-state materials, thereby necessitating a better understanding of the design principles that control multivalent-ion mobility. We report Ca 1.5 Ba 0.5 Si 5 O 3 N 6 as a potential calcium solid-state conductor and investigate its Ca migration mechanism by means of ab initio computations and neutron diffraction. This compound contains partially occupied Ca sites in close proximity to each other, providing a unique mechanism for Ca migration. Nuclear density maps obtained with the maximum entropy method from neutron powder diffraction data provide strong evidence for low-energy percolating one-dimensional pathways for Ca-ion migration. Ab initio molecular dynamics simulations further support a low Ca-ion migration barrier of ~400 meV when Ca vacancies are present and reveal a unique "vacancy-adjacent"concerted ion migration mechanism. This work provides a new understanding of solid-state Ca-ion diffusion and insights into the future design of novel cation configurations that utilize the interactions between mobile ions to enable fast multivalent-ion conduction in solid-state materials.

Metal Halide Perovskites Demonstrate Radiation Hardness and Defect Healing in Vacuum

Herein, we subject formamidinium lead iodide films to oxygen-containing gases (flowing O 2 or free diffusion of lab atmosphere), inert gases (flowing He, Ar, or N 2 ), and vacuum. Our films are irradiated by Cu Ka X-rays and held at 75 °C while X-ray diffraction is recorded. Under all gas conditions, we observe a reproducible 1.1 ± 0.5 A 3 perovskite lattice contraction from an initial unit cell volume of 256.5 ± 0.8 A 3 concurrent with continuous perovskite loss and lead iodide growth. Oxygen-containing gases increase the reaction rates without materially altering perovskite structural changes. Under the same temperature and irradiation conditions in vacuo, a self-healing reaction is observed, exhibited by a reproducible (0.9 ± 0.3 A 3 ) lattice expansion and stabilization of the perovskite. Furthermore, interactions between the perovskite, defects, and minority phases are simulated by generalized gradient approximation Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof (GGA-PBE) density functional theory. Lattice contraction indicates an increase in the concentration of Schottky defects-pairs of formamidinium and iodine vacancies. Under irradiation in every atmospheric condition, a solid solution of Schottky defects with a concentration of several percent diffuses and precipitates forming lead iodide and consuming the defects. In the presence of ionized gases, this framework is modified to include the continual loss of formamidinium and iodine ions from the perovskite forming Schottky defects.

Migration of Ga vacancies and interstitials in β – Ga 2 O 3

Pathways and energy barriers for the migration of Ga vacancies (V Ga ) and Ga interstitials (Ga i ) in β–Ga 2 O 3 are explored using hybrid functional calculations and the nudged elastic band method. Considering β–Ga 2 O 3 as primarily being an n-type semiconductor, we focus on defect charge states relevant under such conditions: $V^{3 –}_{Ga}$, Ga$^{3+}_{i}$, and Ga$^{+}_{i}$. Notably, we describe a mechanism by which V Ga can transform between its different split configurations. In all cases, the intermediate state consists of a vacancy split between three Ga sites—a three-split vacancy—which enables passage over a significantly lower energy barrier. This is because it avoids the unfavorable simple vacancy at the tetrahedral Ga site. The proposed mechanism lowers the overall barrier for $V^{3–}_{Ga}$ diffusion along the [001] crystal direction from 1.73 to 0.97 eV, whereas the 2.08 eV barrier for the [100] and [010] directions is unaffected. For Ga$^{3+}_{i}$, we obtain similar overall migration barriers of 0.72, 0.80, and 1.02 eV for the [010], [001], and [100] directions, respectively. Ga$^{+}_{i}$ exhibits a strong preference for diffusion within the large eight-sided channel; the overall migration barrier is 0.92 eV for the [010] direction, and 2.16 eV for the [001] and [100] directions. The limiting step for the two latter directions involves ionization of Ga$^{+}_{i}$ followed by a jump to an adjacent large eight-sided channel as Ga$^{3+}_{i}$. Finally, our results are discussed in light of experimental observations of thermally activated recovery processes in irradiated material.

Intermittent oxidation kinetics and metal/oxide interfacial undulation

The phenomenon of oxygen-adsorption-induced surface restructuring is widespread across various metal-oxygen systems, yet its impact on initiating bulk oxide formation remains largely unexplored. In this study, through in-situ atomic-resolution electron microscopy observations of surface oxidation of Cu(110) and Cu 85 Au 15 (110), we unveil intermittent oxide-film growth modulated by oxygen-induced surface restructuring. This modulation is evidenced by repeated pinning of Cu 2 O growth front at isolated Cu columns of the c(6×2)-O reconstruction, owing to required long-range diffusion of Cu and O atoms to the Cu 2 O growth front. We reveal that Cu vacancies, generated at the Cu 2 O growth front, are injected into the Cu 2 O/Cu interface, inducing hill-and-valley undulation of the Cu 2 O film. In contrast, atomic vacancies produced during the Cu 85 Au 15 (110) oxidation preferentially migrate into interfaces between Au-rich and Au-poor regions in the bulk, resulting in a flat and adherent Cu 2 O film. These findings demonstrate the critical role of oxygen-induced surface restructuring in modulating oxide-film-growth kinetics and manipulability of the fate of injected vacancies by alloying, thereby offering insights applicable to a broader range of metal-oxygen systems for fine-tuning oxidation kinetics and enhancing oxide/metal interfacial adhesion.

Electrode chemistry impact on retention performance of ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2−x ) capacitors

Polarization retention of 10 nm thick ferroelectric hafnium zirconium oxide (Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2−x , HZO) capacitors with W and TaN electrodes is investigated over temperatures ranging from 85 to 150 °C. Same state and opposite state polarization margins for devices with W electrodes show minimal retention loss after 10 5 at 150 °C. The devices capped with TaN electrodes show excellent same state retention, but the opposite state polarization margin in the TaN-electrode devices displays 40% retention loss at 150 °C after 10 5 s. The TaN-capped devices exhibit a more pronounced imprint, which is attributed to an increased oxygen vacancy content (compared to W-capped devices). The increased oxygen vacancy content in the TaN-capped devices is supported by photoluminescence and leakage current measurements. In addition, TaN-capped devices have chemically diffuse electrode–HZO interfaces; more abrupt interfaces are present in the W-capped devices. The presence of interfacial phases in the TaN-capped devices may lead to larger depolarization fields due to reduced charge screening. The results from this study provide further evidence that for HZO ferroelectric devices the electrode can significantly impact polarization retention behavior due to differences in oxygen vacancy concentration and formation of non-ferroelectric interfacial layers.

Coalescence dynamics of prismatic dislocation loops due to vacancy supersaturation

Recovery processes in metals with a high defect concentration are at the heart of a structural alloy's usability in engineering applications. However, such processes take place via nonconservative mechanisms mediated by point defect diffusion and are governed by their interactions with the underlying microstructure. Indeed, one of the main challenges in studying recovery processes is their intrinsic multiscale complexity, which often negates the direct use of experimental techniques. Here, in this Research Letter, we study the mechanism of dislocation loop coalescence in metals by simulating the interaction dynamics between vacancies and prismatic loops using a stochastic framework that seamlessly bridges point defect kinetics with dislocation mechanics. Our simulations reveal two fundamental discoveries: first, that climb processes are governed by local fluctuations that are not captured by continuum elastodiffusion models, and, second, that prismatic loops create internal traps for vacancies, leading to the formation of rings around the perimeter of the loops that affect how coalescence takes place. Our results show an excellent agreement with in situ experimental observations of loop coalescence in Fe under irradiation.

Existence of La-site antisite defects in LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) predicted with many-body diffusion quantum Monte Carlo

The properties of LaMO 3 (M: 3d transition metal) perovskite crystals are significantly dependent on point defects, whether introduced accidentally or intentionally. The most studied defects in La-based perovskites are the oxygen vacancies and doping impurities on the La and M sites. Here, we identify that intrinsic antisite defects, the replacement of La by the transition metal, M, can be formed under M-rich and O-poor growth conditions, based on results of an accurate many-body ab initio approach. Our fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo (FNDMC) calculations of LaMO 3 (M = Mn, Fe, and Co) find that such antisite defects can have low formation energies and are magnetized. Complementary density functional theory (DFT)-based calculations show that Mn antisite defects in LaMnO 3 may cause the p-type electronic conductivity. These features could affect spintronics, redox catalysis, and other broad applications. Our bulk validation studies establish that FNDMC reproduces the antiferromagnetic state of LaMnO 3 , whereas DFT with PBE (Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof), SCAN (strongly constrained and appropriately normed), and the LDA+U (local density approximation with Coulomb U) functionals all favor ferromagnetic states, at variance with experiment.

Mixed Ionic–Electronic Conductor of Perovskite Li x La y MO 3-δ toward Carbon-Free Cathode for Reversible Lithium–Air Batteries

Mixed ionic–electronic conductors (MIECs) can play a pivotal role in achieving high energies and power densities in rechargeable batteries owing to their ability to simultaneously conduct ions and electrons. In our study, a new strategy is proposed wherein late 3d transition metals (TMs) are substituted into a perovskite Li-ion conductor to transform it into a Li-containing MIEC. First-principles calculations show that perovskite Li x La y MO 3 with late 3d TMs have a low oxygen vacancy formation energy, implying high electron carrier concentrations corresponding to high electronic conductivity. The activation barriers for Li diffusion in Li x La y MO 3 (M = Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, and Co) are below 0.411 eV, resulting in high Li-ion conductivity. The designed perovskites of Li0.34La 0.55 MnO 3-δ experimentally prove to have high electronic (2.04 × 10 -3 S cm -1 ) and Li-ion (8.53 × 10 -5 S cm -1 ) conductivities, and when applied in a carbon-free cathode of a Li–air cell, they deliver superior reversibility at 0.21 mAh cm -2 over 100 charge/discharge cycles while avoiding the degradation associated with carbonaceous materials. Finally, this strategy enables the effective design of Li-conducting MIEC and reversible Li–air batteries.

The effect of elastic anisotropy on the symmetry selection of irradiation-induced void superlattices in cubic metals

We report self-organized microstructures and patterns have been widely observed in non-equilibrium physical systems. In particular, irradiation in metals creates far-from-equilibrium environments, in which the competing dynamics of defect production and annihilation can lead to unique self-organized superlattice structures, e.g., void and gas bubble superlattices. From a physical point of view, the superlattice structures are dictated by the intrinsic symmetry breaking in the metals, i.e., anisotropy caused by the breaking of continuous rotational symmetry. In the literature, two distinctive anisotropies, elastic anisotropy and diffusion anisotropy of interstitials, have been proposed to be the origins of superlattice formation. However, it is still unclear which anisotropy dominates the symmetry selection of superlattice structures. In this paper, we study elastic anisotropy and its effect on the symmetry of void superlattices. By using theoretical analyses and phase field simulations, we show that elastic anisotropy in cubic metals can lead to either face-centered cubic or simple cubic superlattices depending on the Zener anisotropy ratio. The superlattices formed under this elastic anisotropy mechanism must form under the influence of spinodal decomposition, as the mechanism requires perturbations in the vacancy concentration field to develop into spatially-static concentration waves. We compare to existing work on symmetry selection in superlattices via diffusion anisotropy and to experimental observations, and we suggest that concentration wave development under the influence of elastic anisotropy is not the mechanism for symmetry selection during the formation of irradiation-induced void superlattices, but that diffusion anisotropy could be the dominant mechanism.

High Pressure Synthesis of Ultrasmall Nanodiamonds with Nitrogen Vacancy Centers

C–H terminated nanometer scale diamonds ( d = 1 to 15 nm) are synthesized from 1-fluoroadamantane at high pressure (6–8 GPa) and high temperature (500–1500 °C) in a multianvil press. High resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman, diffuse reflectance Fourier transform infrared, and X-ray absorption spectroscopies demonstrate the excellent crystallinity and atomically flat C–H terminated surfaces of nanodiamonds with (111) and (110) facets. The importance of hydrogen to the synthesis of nanodiamond and its faceting is discussed. Following vacancy generation, annealing and oxidation of the nanodiamonds, optically detected magnetic resonance and electron spin resonance coherence times ( T 2 = 0.9 and 2.1 μs) of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers are measured. Finally, the obtained T 2 values are equivalent to the shallow NV centers (depth <10 nm) in bulk diamond crystals and larger nanocrystals prepared by mechanical milling.

Fission gas diffusion and release for Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 : From the atomic to the engineering scale

Here, the anticipated benefits of large grains in Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 pellets include improved mechanical and fission gas retention properties. To support the assessment of fission gas release (FGR) from doped pellets, the impact of doping on fission gas diffusivity for in-reactor conditions must be understood. In this work, we tackle this issue by informing the fission gas model within the BISON fuel performance code using material models developed at the atomic scale. The investigation of intra-granular fission gas diffusivity in Cr 2 O 3 -doped UO 2 is carried out by adapting a cluster dynamics model that, accounting for UO 2 thermochemistry, is capable of describing Xe diffusion under irradiation in undoped UO 2 as the starting point. Using a thermodynamic analysis, it is shown that in stoichiometric UO 2 with additions of Cr 2 O 3 the oxygen potential is defined by the Cr-Cr 2 O 3 two-phase equilibrium. Using the cluster dynamics model, the predicted Xe diffusivity in doped UO 2 was significantly increased in both the intrinsic and irradiation-enhanced regimes compared to undoped UO 2 as a result of higher concentrations of uranium and oxygen vacancies, respectively. This is a consequence of the more oxidizing conditions at high temperature, and more reducing conditions at low temperature, as a result of doping. Arrhenius functions have been fitted to the cluster dynamics results to enable implementation of the new diffusivities in the BISON fission gas behavior model. BISON simulations were carried out, showing the competing effects of the enlarged grains and the new fission gas diffusivity model, which act to suppress and enhance fission gas release, respectively. The new physics-informed model was validated against in-reactor experimental measurements under normal operation. Additionally, benchmarking was carried out for power ramp conditions. The predicted fission gas release agreed well with the experimental data, showing noticeable improvements over the standard UO 2 model.
