Thermochemically-Informed Mass Transport Model for Zr in U-Zr Fuel

Recent improvements to the coupled Thermochimica-MOOSE/BISON code system have enabled efficient calculations of species transport based on direct evaluation of composition and temperature dependent chemical potentials of the species. This presents an alternative to the traditional approach to species transport in nuclear fuels, which has been to employ a diffusion formulation that combines concentration-gradient driven Fickian diffusion with a Soret term based on a heat of transport fit to experimental data. Here we describe the application of the coupled code system to the diffusion of Zr in U-Zr metallic fuel. New classes implemented in BISON to solve this problem are documented. The Zr concentration profile after 50 years of diffusion is found to be strongly dependent on the assumptions made pertaining how to mobility is calculated in multi-phase regions of the fuel element. Two assumptions are compared (simple averaging of mobilities and using the majority phase mobility), and good qualitative agreement with experimental measurements is obtained using the majority phase assumption.

Solar Ammonia Production via Novel Two-step Thermochemical Looping of a Co 3 Mo 3 N/Co 6 Mo 6 N pair [Slides]

Ternary nitrides in the family A 3 B x N (A=Co, Ni, Fe; B=Mo; x=2,3) identified and synthesized. Experiments with Co 3 Mo 3 N in Ammonia Synthesis Reactor demonstrate cyclable NH3 production from bulk nitride under pure H 2 . Production rates were approx. constant in all the reduction steps with no evident dependence on the consumed solid-state nitrogen up to formation of 661. Material can be re-nitridized under pure N 2 (or 10% H 2 /N 2 ). Bulk N utilization per reduction step averaged between 25 – 40% of the total (2-3 hours). Rate equations and parameters extracted from data. NH 3 selectivity exceeds gas phase equilibrium at higher temperatures (in a large excess of H 2 ). Selectivity begins to decrease significantly above 650 C, N 2 production rapidly increases above 650 C seemingly due to reaction that is zero order in H 2 (thermal reduction of the nitride?). Poised to begin the systematics studies of relationships between materials and reactions.

Manufacturing Supply Chain Development for Modular Solar-Thermochemical Conversion Platform [Abstract]

We will develop a tunable pulsed electron source capable of generating variable intensity highly-focused electron pulses at high repetition rates. Specifically, we need to demonstrate a high-speed variable electron gun capable of generating a variable intensity electron pulse containing between 102 and 105 electrons with an accelerating voltage of 1kV focused into a spot size <100nm in diameter at with a pulse rate >10MHz (with path to 300MHz). This combined performance cannot be achieved by commercially available electron sources. The primary technology path selected for this work will be to use a photocathode approach, where an easily modulated UV laser is used to stimulate electron emission. The approach utilizes the advances made in the development of the Dynamic TEM (DTEM), though this project will be simpler in that the pulse intensity is lower and there is no requirement for coherency. Alternate paths, including using a traditional electron beam modulated using a v-shaped slit and electrostatically deflecting the beam to adjust intensity; will also be considered for future capabilities. The electron source will then be used generate optically stimulated luminescence (OSL) in lithium fluoride (LiF) substrates to demonstrate the potential for OSL to serve as a basis technology for next generation data storage systems.
