ECAR-5367 Rev 0 Hydraulic Assessment of the Primary Coolant Test System Design

A MARVEL thermal-hydraulic analysis team has developed the computational fluid dynamicsmodel of the Primary Coolant Test (PCAT) system design based on the CAD drawing providedfrom INL PCAT design team. This ECAR addresses the hydraulic system characteristics(pressure loss and flow distribution) in the various sub-components of the PCAT design. Thisreport provides potential design optimization direction on the PCAT test. Most importantly, thisreport evaluates the feasibility of the natural circulation at the targeted heat balance between thecore and heat sink design.

ECAR-6330 Rev 0 Computational Fluid Dynamics Evaluation of Core Pressure Drop for the Primary Coolant Apparatus Test

PCAT is a thermal-hydraulic test loop for MARVEL reactor. The design gap thickness between the heater rods of PCAT core is 1.0 mm. The heater elements were manufactured within a straightness tolerance for the designed gap thickness, but several elements have been distorted out of tolerance during the welding process. The distortion of heater rods could lead to flow maldistribution and excessive hotspot temperature when the gap between two heater rods is too narrow. Wire-wraps are the spacer devices widely used in the sodium cooled fast reactor system to maintain the design fuel pitch. Generally, a wire spacer can enhance the turbulent heat transfer, but it increases the pressure drop, which is not desirable for a natural-circulation system like PCAT. Therefore, three short wire-wrap spacers per heater have been proposed to contain the core pressure drops and keep the heater-to-heater gap in an acceptable range. The objectives of this ECAR is to evaluate the PCAR core pressure drop with short wire spacers to confirm that the additional pressure drop due to the wire spacer will not disturb the natural circulation of the PCAT.

ECAR-7210 Rev 0 Steady-state Thermo-mechanical Analysis of the MARVEL Fuel Bundle

This document reports the steady-state thermal-hydraulic and static mechanical analyses of the MARVEL micro-reactor core. The objective of this work is to investigate whether fuel-to-fuel contact could occur due to the thermal deformation of the fuel cladding during the normal operation and to assess the resulting impact on the peak cladding temperatures (PCT) if contact occurs. The scope of the work consists of three computational tasks. First, a conjugate heat transfer analysis using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was performed to evaluate the PCTs during normal operating conditions. Second, a finite element analysis (FEA) using the cladding temperature field obtained from the CFD analysis was performed to evaluate the thermal deformation of cladding and determine the occurrence of fuel-to-fuel contact. Finally, a CFD analysis of FEA-informed fuel-to-fuel gap (represented by a conservative 0.05 mm uniform gap) was performed to evaluate whether the PCT exceeds the safety criteria.

Uncertainty quantification in MELCOR Safety analysis of ARIES reactor designs

MELCOR-TMAP is a combined thermal-hydraulics and tritium tracking code developed to simulate severe accident scenarios in fission and fusion power plants. Here, we demonstrate the results of MELCOR-TMAP analyses on historical ARIES program reference designs. By coupling MELCOR-TMAP with the open source RAVEN probabilistic risk analysis framework’s Bayesian UQ capabilities, we also demonstrate key uncertainties in material properties with the highest impact on tritium inventory and plant risk.

Thermal and hydraulic performance of volumetrically heated triply periodic minimal surface heaters

Advanced heat transfer surfaces, mainly Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces (TPMSs) have great potential to increase heat transfer performance over traditional heat transfer surfaces due to their tortuous flow path and higher surface area-volume ratio. The emergence of additive manufacturing of nuclear fuel motivates experimental investigation of such advanced geometries in the context of a nuclear reactor core. Here, this study employed a novel method to explore the performance of gyroid and diamond TPMS geometries. Volumetrically heated heaters were additively manufactured from conductive polymer filament, and airflow was used to simulate the convective heat transfer from the core within a nuclear reactor. The mass flow and volumetric generation rates were varied, local Nusselt number correlations were obtained using embedded thermocouples to measure the solid and fluid temperature, and friction factor correlations were developed using differential pressure measurements. The gyroid TPMS presented a friction factor 1.5 times higher than the diamond TPMS and 90 times that of the rod bundle. TPMS geometries showed Nusselt numbers 8–10 times higher than that of the rod bundle, also maintaining colder internal temperatures, which suggested that they could sustain 250–275 % higher power density than the rod bundle for a given centerline temperature. Hence, having the potential to greatly increase the safety margins and power output of a nuclear reactor core with similar volume.

Neutronics and Thermo-Fluids Simulation of Generic Pebble-Bed Fluoride-Salt-Cooled High-Temperature Reactor

The fluoride-salt-cooled high-temperature reactor (FHR) is one of the advanced reactors that has been attracting considerable interest from both the research community and the nuclear industry. To help facilitate the nuclear community's familiarity with the FHR, Kairos Power has developed a generic FHR (gFHR) benchmark. In the research performed here, this benchmark was used to assess innovative modeling methods that combine stochastic and deterministic computer codes to perform the design and analysis of the gFHR. Further, the Monte Carlo code Serpent 2 was used to generate few-group cross sections that were then used in the neutron diffusion and thermal-fluids code AGREE to perform full-core neutronics and thermal-fluids steady-state and transient core analysis. The Argonne National Laboratory code SAM was then used to model the gFHR system and to simulate the load-follow operation of the gFHR.

A New 1D Model for Thermal Mixing and Stratification in Advanced Reactor Transients

Thermal mixing and stratification in large pools and enclosures play a critical role in the safety and performance of pool-type nuclear reactors, particularly during transient scenarios involving significant temperature differences between incoming and bulk coolant. Accurate modeling of these phenomena is essential for predicting system behavior and supporting passive safety features such as natural circulation. Here, this paper presents a new 1D model for thermal mixing and stratification, developed and implemented in the SAM code. The model represents a large pool as 1D coolant jet channels and zero-dimensional bulk pool volumes, enabling the simulation of a wide range of flow configurations, including hot and cold jet interactions, stratified layers, and the influence of complex geometries such as ceilings, free surfaces, and internal obstacles. Heat exchange between jet and pool regions is governed by closure relations calibrated against 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. The model improves upon earlier approaches by incorporating time-dependent jet characteristics and capturing the associated delay effects more accurately. Code-to-code comparisons and validation against experimental data from the Thermal Stratification Test Facility demonstrate the model’s accuracy and flexibility. This work offers two key contributions: (1) an efficient and robust method for simulating thermal mixing and stratification at the system level, eliminating the need for external coupling between system analysis codes and CFD, and (2) a significant enhancement of SAM’s capabilities to analyze thermal stratification phenomena in advanced reactor systems.

Accurate and Efficient Parametric Model-Order Reduction for Turbulent Thermal Transport

This project produced new algorithms and software for low-cost exploration of turbulent thermal-fluids behavior under parametric variation by using reduced-order models (ROMs). The ROMs numerically solve the governing equations for fluid motion by using a small set of basis functions (typically, N=20-200 modes) to represent the solution. The base modes are computed as optimal combinations of solutions from expensive high-fidelity "anchor-point" solutions involving millions of unknowns, which are typically generated by solving the full Navier-Stokes equations on a supercomputer. The ROM solution is itself a combination of the base modes, where the basis coefficients are determined by evolving an NxN system of nonlinear equations. The overarching idea is to use the inexpensive ROM to predict solutions under conditions where the parameters differ from the anchor-point conditions. Several ingredients are required to make ROMs useful for thermal hydraulics analysis. These include: a stable and accurate ROM that is capable of reproducing the large-scale dynamics of turbulent flow, error indicators than can guide the choice of anchor points, and low-cost mechanisms for evaluating nonlinear terms in the reduced equations.

High-Fidelity Modeling of Fuel-To-Coolant Thermomechanical Transport Behaviors Under Transient Conditions

This report summarizes the work completed under NEUP project number 21-24006. The objectives of this project are to advance the high-fidelity modeling capabilities and important phenomena that is important for high-burnup UO 2 and accident tolerant fuels (ATF) during transient conditions. Accurate modeling of the time-dependent phenomena that impact material performance must be used to determine the figures of merit and safety margin. Phenomena such as fuel fragmentation, cladding oxidation, pellet-clad interaction, clad ballooning, and clad rupture are examples that pose challenges to modeling during these transients. This project focused on the development of high-fidelity tightly coupled multiphysics models that can capture the time-dependent material response and associated thermal hydraulic conditions during these events. These models can then be validated against existing separate effects tests and in-pile integral experiments and will be used to model Transient Reactor Test facility (TREAT) loss-of-coolant accidents (LOCA) experiments. To achieve the project objective, we used a combination of NEAMS and NRC codes to model various LOCA test sets for the separate effects and in-pile integral experiments. BlueCRAB tool set, which can accurately predict material response at a sub-fuel pin level, as well as modeling the entire reactor system response to these events. Fuel performance was modeled using BISON (various versions) and FAST (version 1.2.1). BISON and FAST can model on a sub-fuel pin level the fuel performance under transient conditions. Both have simplified thermal hydraulic models that are capable of providing basic coolant boundary conditions. To better capture the thermomechanical interaction between the fuel, clad, and coolant, more sophisticated thermal hydraulic models are necessary.

Demonstration of Pronghorn’s Subchannel Code Modeling of Liquid-Metal Reactors and Validation in Normal Operation Conditions and Blockage Scenarios

Pronghorn-SC is a subchannel code within the Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE). Initially designed to simulate flows in water-cooled, square lattice, subchannel assemblies, Pronghorn-SC has been expanded to simulate liquid-metal-cooled flows in triangular lattices, hexagonal subchannel assemblies. For this purpose, the algorithm of Pronghorn-SC was adapted to solve the subchannel equations as they are applicable to a hexagonal wire-wrapped sodium-cooled fast reactor. Cheng–Todreas models for pressure drop and cross-flow models were adopted and a coolant heat conduction term was added. To solve these equations, an improved implicit algorithm was developed robust enough to deal with the numerical issues, associated with low flow and recirculation phenomena. To confirm the prediction capability of Pronghorn-SC, calculations and comparisons with available experimental data of 19- and 37-pin assemblies were performed, as well as other subchannel codes. Finally, a flow blockage modeling feature was added. This capability was validated for both water-cooled square sub-assemblies and sodium-cooled hexagonal sub-assemblies, using experimental data of partially and fully blocked cases.

However, the nuclear fuels and materials qualifications require several decades (for example, new reactor fuel qualification from conceptualization requires about 20 years). Therefore, accelerating nuclear fuels and materials qualification is essential, and it can be achieved by combining high through-put materials irradiation and testing, advanced post-irradiation examinations, and Multiphysics modeling. This paper addressed the associated challenges in accelerating nuclear fuels and material qualification for new and advanced reactor designs, which differ based on fuel, coolant, operating conditions, and structural materials. These challenges vary for radiation level, operating conditions (e.g., temperature and pressure), and coolant type (e.g., corrosion environment). In addition, the challenges and limitations in modeling tools, experimental facilities, and licensing guidelines are also discussed, and a general solution path forward is recommended.

Machine-Learning-aided Approach for Predicting the Thermal Expansion Behaviors in Advanced Test Reactor Capsules (NURETH-20 full paper)

Instrumented experiments at test reactors are essential to deploying new advanced reactor systems. Designing new experiments and generating data on specific conditions require both time and cost investment. A high-fidelity model of the experiment environment can be created using finite element analysis software to support the actual experiments, but computation time is still a concern in applying outcomes to real-time usage (e.g., a digital twin). This research proposes a machine-learning-aided approach to temperature and displacement predictions, based on the thickness of the outer gas gap on the experimental capsule used for the in-pile demonstration of a novel thermal conductivity probe in the Advanced Test Reactor. The capsule consisted of U10Zr fuel, a rodlet, sodium, and inner and outer capsules. There were gas gaps between the fuel and rodlet and between the inner and outer capsule. The learning data consisted of an experimental capsule’s radial distributions of temperature and displacement, as obtained from Abaqus and the physical features. For the first step, temperature was predicted using three positional parameters. Then the displacement was predicted using six different positional parameters. Each physical feature was normalized to be both nondimensional and standardized. The temperature and displacement predictions showed good agreement in all cases involving interpolation and extrapolation. Also, data similarity enhancement increased the similarity between training and target data increasing the predictive accuracy of machine-learning models. In some cases of extrapolation, the accuracy of the machine-learning model showed limited performance, but still data similarity enhancement improved the accuracy.

Development of Data Reporting Standards for High-Temperature Gas-cooled Reactor (HTGR) Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) Thermal-Fluid Experiments

Since 2009, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Nuclear Energy's Nuclear Energy University Program (NEUP) has been at the forefront of nuclear research, specifically concentrating on advancing high-temperature gas-cooled reactor (HTGR) technologies. By Fiscal Year 2023, NEUP has authorized 35 projects dedicated to HTGR research, each contributing significantly to the enhancement of our understanding of this technology. The outcomes of these diverse projects have been disseminated through final NEUP reports, peer-reviewed journal articles, and presentations at academic conferences, forming a comprehensive tapestry of knowledge. Despite the substantial value of these findings, their dissemination has been fragmented, posing challenges for accessibility to researchers and policymakers and leading to underutilization of DOE investments. Recognizing this critical gap and its potential consequences for the future of nuclear research, the Advanced Reactor Technologies (ART) Gas-Cooled Reactor (GCR) program conducted an extensive survey of completed and ongoing HTGR NEUP projects. This survey enabled the compilation of crucial data, resulting in the development of a specialized public-access database tailored for computational fluid dynamics and system code validation, specifically designed for HTGR applications. However, the data collection process revealed a significant challenge in central data organization due to individual researchers from different institutes employing varying logics and preferences for recording and documenting experimental data. Consequently, an urgent need has been identified to establish a standardized reporting format for HTGR experimental projects. Addressing this issue is essential for enhancing collaboration, maximizing the impact of DOE investments, and ensuring the seamless advancement of HTGR technologies in nuclear research.

Validation of Pronghorn’s Subchannel code using the EBR-II shutdown heat removal tests

A Subchannel application (Pronghorn-SC) is developed in MOOSE, which affords the required flow field resolution, while still preserving an engineering-scale approach. This new solver can be natively coupled to Pronghorn and other MOOSE objects to enable full-core, multi-physics, multi-scale engineering studies. This work utilizes the EBR-II SHRT tests to validate the subchannel capabilities. Multi-scale and multi-physics coupling is used to improve the fidelity of the subchannel code calculations.

Development and Validation of Two-Phase Flow Models in MOOSE and Application to Molten Salt Reactors

Two-phase flow in Molten Salt Reactors (MSRs) is important as it impacts reactivity evolution, reactor transient response, and the removal of species dissolved in the molten salt through gas phase transfer. Therefore, accurately predicting the gas distribution and the associated liquid-gas interface area in MSRs is essential for their design and operation. Recently, we integrated a new two-phase model into Idaho National Laboratory (INL)’s Multiphysics Object-Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE): a multi-D generalization of a mixture drift-flux model. It provides greater computational efficiency, which is typically preferred for modeling reactor transients. However, the mixture model’s accuracy in capturing void distribution and interfacial area in MSRs still needs to be assessed. This article begins with a description of the mathematical framework for the two-phase model implemented in MOOSE. It then presents validation of these models against relevant experimental data. Finally, the model is applied to the Molten Salt Reactor Experiment case study, analyzing various operational conditions such as different rates of fission product volatilization and diverse cover gas entrainment scenarios at the reactor pump. The article concludes by assessing the suitability of the mixture drift-flux model for capturing the two-phase flow dynamics critical to MSR operations
