Laboratory evaluation of a pilot cell battery protection system for photovoltaic applications

An energy storage method for the 3.5 kW battery power system was investigated. The Pilot Cell Battery Protection System was tested for use in photovoltaic power systems and results show that this is a viable method of storage battery control. The method of limiting battery depth of discharge has the following advantages: (1) temperature sensitivity; (2) rate sensitivity; and (3) state of charge indication. The pilot cell concept is of interest in remote stand alone photovoltaic power systems. The battery can be protected from damaging overdischarge by using the proper ratio of pilot cell capacities to main battery capacity.

Ocean Data Acquisition System

The Ocean Data Acquisition System (ODAS) is a low cost instrument with potential commercial application. It is easily mounted on a small aircraft and flown over the coastal zone ocean to remotely measure sea surface temperature and three channels of ocean color information. From this data, chlorophyll levels can be derived for use by ocean scientists, fisheries, and environmental offices. Data can be transmitted to shipboard for real-time use with sea truth measurements, ocean productivity estimates and fishing fleet direction. The aircraft portion of the system has two primary instruments: an IR radiometer to measure sea surface temperature and a three channel visible spectro-radiometer for 460, 490, and 520 nm wavelength measurements from which chlorophyll concentration can be derived. The aircraft package contains a LORAN-C unit for aircraft location information, clock, on-board data processor and formatter, digital data storage, packet radio terminal controller, and radio transceiver for data transmission to a ship. The shipboard package contains a transceiver, packet terminal controller, data processing and storage capability, and printer. Both raw data and chlorophyll concentrations are available for real-time analysis.

Jet mixing in low gravity - Results of the Tank Pressure Control Experiment

The Tank Pressure Control Experiment (TPCE) is discussed with attention given to the results for controlling storage-tank pressures by forced-convective mixing in microgravitational environments. The fluid dynamics of cryogenic fluids in space is simulated with freon-113 during axial-jet-induced mixing. The experimental flow-pattern data are found to confirm previous data as well as existing mixing correlations. Thermal nonuniformities and tank pressure can be reduced by employing low-energy mixing jets which are useful for enhancing heat/mass transfer between phases. It is found that space cryogenic systems based on the principle of active mixing can be more reliable and predictable than other methods, and continuous or periodic mixing can be accomplished with only minor energy addition to the fluid.

The Development of Engineering Tomography for Monolithic and Composite Materials and Components

The research accomplishments under this grant were very extensive in the areas of the development of engineering tomography for monolithic and composite materials and components. Computed tomography was used on graphite composite pins and bushings to find porosity, cracks, and delaminations. It supported the following two programs: Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV) and Southern Research institute (SRI). Did research using CT and radiography on Nickel based Superalloy dogbones and found density variations and gas shrinkage porosity. Did extensive radiography and CT of PMC composite flywheels and found delamination and non-uniform fiber distribution. This grant supported the Attitude Control Energy Storage Experiment (ACESE) program. Found broken fibers and cracks of outer stainless steel fibers using both radiographic and CT techniques on Pratt and Whitney fuel lines; Supported the Pratt & Whitney and Aging Aircraft engines program. Grant research helped identify and corroborate thickness variations and density differences in a silicon nitride "ROTH" tube using computed tomography.

Performance of Sweetpotato for Bioregenerative Life Support

Sweetpotato was successfully grown to harvest maturity in a large-scale atmospherically-closed controlled environment chamber. Yield of edible biomass and capacity for contributing to air revitalization and water recovery were documented. Yield was slightly less than that found in smaller-scale studies, but this is not unusual (Wheeler 1999). Continued work is suggested to improve control of storage root initiation, bulking and vine growth.

DIAMOND - an Architecture for Persistent Space Platforms

We define DIAMOND, an architecture for generalized, persistent platforms in space, providing support infrastructure for multiple payloads with diverse missions, and able to accept the integration of payloads delivered to the platform after it is established in space. Such platforms would create a new space ecosystem with opportunities for much larger platforms than currently exist, for adaptation to changing technological and market conditions over long periods of time, and for tenants of the platform to launch only their unique payloads without having to carry all the equipment needed to support them. The DIAMOND architecture uses a novel “Architectural Shearing Layer” approach combining long-lived but replaceable structural and support infrastructure components with shorter-lived, higher-value service and tenant facilities. The structural aspect of the proposed architecture is a regular lattice constructed of tetrahedral cells, constructed of only a few types of simple structural components, patterned according to the cubic lattice of natural diamond crystals. The cubic lattice is arranged on larger scales to be fractal sponge, providing a disproportionately large number of surface attachment points while maintaining overall low mass of the entire structure. Generalized architectural shearing layers are also provided that permit easy separation between structural, power, thermal, propulsion/attitude control, pointing/vibration control, computing/data storage, and communication, and various operational aspects of the architecture. The combined result ensures longevity by enabling space platforms to undergo many cycles of change with little peril and at low cost, changing any part of the platform at different times and rates while leaving the remaining parts of the platform undisturbed.

Microbial Vessel for Impedance Spectroscopy and Electrochemistry (Mvise): an Extensible, Interoperable Data Acquisition Platform for Liquid Culture Studies in Space Biology Research

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) has declared 2023 to be the Year of Open Science following an initiative to democratize scientific knowledge. Simultaneously, new sensor technologies have broadened the experimental space available to bioastronautics research. With these open-science goals and technological advances in mind, we have designed and constructed a data acquisition platform for high-precision, real-time monitoring of liquid culture systems. The vessel rig is fitted with six Atlas Scientific probes (micro pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, liquid temperature, air CO2) and a custom optical density probe similar to the one on BioSentinel’s BioSensor payload. A custom dielectric spectroscopy probe is also planned. The structure of the vessel is resin 3-D printed on a hobbyist-level machine, reducing the production cost and iteration time by over 60% each while increasing extensibility. Data acquisition and storage is controlled with a standalone C state machine-based program running on a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. When not running headless, an additional program automatically generates and updates plots for live data visualization. Validation of the rig as a data collection system was performed with a yeast liquid culture experiment. While the vessel rig is currently used for standalone experiments, it can also be used as the base perception unit in a self-driving laboratory (SDL). SDLs are high-throughput data collection systems that employ automation and artificial intelligence to conduct and manage routine experiments. Here, we envision an SDL driven by several vessel rigs in which an automated script compares key results, informing the design of future experiments. A vessel rig SDL would streamline many operations, including 1) strain selection for the Lunar Explorer Instrument for space biology Applications (LEIA) investigation and 2) the study of bioregenerative life support systems (BLSS). Ultimately, the datasets that can now be acquired will provide crucial information for accelerating bioastronautics application development in the era of commercial space.

Flywheel Rotor Safe-Life Technology

Since the 1960s, research has been conducted into the use of flywheels as energy storage systems. The-proposed applications include energy storage for hybrid and electric automobiles, attitude control and energy storage for satellites, and uninterruptible power supplies for hospitals and computer centers. For many years, however, the use of flywheels for space applications was restricted by the total weight of a system employing a metal rotor. With recent technological advances in the manufacturing of composite materials, however, lightweight composite rotors have begun to be proposed for such applications. Flywheels with composite rotors provide much higher power and energy storage capabilities than conventional chemical batteries. However, the failure of a high speed flywheel rotor could be a catastrophic event. For this reason, flywheel rotors are classified by the NASA Fracture Control Requirements Standard as fracture critical parts. Currently, there is no industry standard to certify a composite rotor for safe and reliable operation forth( required lifetime of the flywheel. Technical problems hindering the development of this standard include composite manufacturing inconsistencies, insufficient nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for detecting defects and/or impact damage, lack of standard material test methods for characterizing composite rotor design allowables, and no unified proof (over-spin) test for flight rotors. As part of a flywheel rotor safe-life certification pro-ram funded b the government, a review of the state of the art in composite rotors is in progress. The goal of the review is to provide a clear picture of composite flywheel rotor technologies. The literature review has concentrated on the following topics concerning composites and composite rotors: durability (fatigue) and damage tolerance (safe-life) analysis/test methods, in-service NDE and health monitoring techniques, spin test methods/ procedures, and containment options. This report presents the papers selected for their relevance to this topic and summarizes them.

Cyber-Resilient Frequency Control of Power Grids with Energy Storage Systems

The integration of synchronous generators and energy storage systems operated through communication networks introduces new challenges and vulnerabilities to the electric grid, where cyber attacks can corrupt sensor measurements or control inputs and interrupt functions such as frequency regulation. This paper proposes a defense methodology for the design of resilient operating constraints imposed on each generation and storage unit in order to prevent any attack sequence from driving the system's frequency to unsafe conditions. The resilient operating constraints are found by using ellipsoidal approximations of the reachable set of the power system, leading to a convex optimization problem with linear matrix inequalities. Numerical results in a single-area power system with synchronous generation and energy storage demonstrate how the resilient constraints provide security guarantees against any type of attack affecting frequency measurements or controller setpoints.

Advanced Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS) study

Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS) studies performed over a decade ago established the feasibility of simultaneously satisfying the demands of energy storage and attitude control through the use of rotating flywheels. It was demonstrated that, for a wide spectrum of applications, such a system possessed many advantages over contemporary energy storage and attitude control approaches. More recent technology advances in composite material rotors, magnetic suspension systems, and power control electronics have triggered new optimism regarding the applicability and merits of this concept. This study is undertaken to define an advanced IPACS and to evaluate its merits for a space station application. System and component designs are developed to establish the performance of this concept and system trade studies conducted to examine the viability of this approach relative to conventional candidate systems. It is clearly demonstrated that an advanced IPACS concept is not only feasible, but also offers substantial savings in mass and life-cycle cost for the space station mission.

A Comprehensive Strategy for Grid Forming Control in DC Coupled Photovoltaic and Battery Energy Storage Inverters

This paper presents an integrated DC-DC and DCAC grid-forming control strategy for DC-coupled photovoltaic (PV) plus battery energy storage systems, considering the effect of DC link voltage variations caused by direct PV connections. A power reference algorithm determines power distribution between the PV and battery to the grid while observing device power ratings to prevent the over-rating of components and keep the battery's state of charge within an acceptable range. The simulated utility-scale model in MATLAB/Simulink illustrates its ability against extreme phase angle variation contingencies in the grid while controlled through grid-forming control with a fast dynamic on DC link voltage. The simulation results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed control in integrating PV plus battery configurations with grid forming control and maintaining reliable grid operation under severe grid disturbances.
