Report on the status of a slotted wind tunnel wall representation using the vortex-lattice technique

A combined analytical/experimental program for development of an improved slotted wind-tunnel wall representation is described. The effort is scheduled for completion in 1977. The vortex-lattice technique which is being used as the primary analytical tool for representing both the wind-tunnel and the lifting model is discussed. Comparisons of results obtained to date with available data are presented.

The relationship between mean anomaly block sizes and spherical harmonic representations

The frequently used rule specifying the relationship between a mean gravity anomaly in a block whose side length is theta degrees and a spherical harmonic representation of these data to degree l-bar is examined in light of the smoothing parameter used by Pellinen (1966). It is found that if the smoothing parameter is not considered, mean anomalies computed from potential coefficients can be in error by about 30% of the rms anomaly value. It is suggested that the above mentioned rule should be considered only a crude approximation.

On the representation matrices of the spin permutation group

A method is presented for the determination of the representation matrices of the spin permutation group (symmetric group), a detailed knowledge of these matrices being required in the study of the electronic structure of atoms and molecules. The method is characterized by the use of two different coupling schemes. Unlike the Yamanouchi spin algebraic scheme, the method is not recursive. The matrices for the fundamental transpositions can be written down directly in one of the two bases. The method results in a computationally significant reduction in the number of matrix elements that have to be stored when compared with, say, the standard Young tableaux group theoretical approach.

A new concept in laser-assisted chemistry - The electronic-field representation

Electronic-field representation is proposed as a technique for laser-assisted chemistry. Specifically, it is shown that several field-assisted chemical processes can be described in terms of mixed matter-field quantum states and their associated energies. The technique may be used to analyze the effects exerted by an intense laser on both bound and unbound molecular systems, and to investigate other field-induced effects including multiphoton processes, emission, and photodissociation.

An elliptic representation of coupled boundary layers and inviscid core for computation of separated internal flows

This report presents a viscous-inviscid calculation method for the prediction of turbulent incompressible flows in diffusers with small regions of stall. Integral turbulent boundary layer equations (BLE) are used to provide boundary conditions for a finite difference representation of the inviscid core. The BLE are applied at the floating displacement-thickness line, resulting in a simulataneous set of nonlinear block tridiagonal equations which are solved iteratively using a sucessive line-relaxation technique. Results of the method have been applied to calculate the performance of a variety of asymmetric stalled diffusers.

Hydroelastic vibration analysis of partially liquid-filled shells using a series representation of the liquid

A series representation of the oscillatory behavior of incompressible nonviscous liquids contained in partially filled elastic tanks is presented. Each term is selected on the basis of hydroelastic vibrations in circular cylindrical tanks. Using a complementary energy principle, the superposition of terms is made to approximately satisfy the liquid-tank interface compatibility. This analysis is applied to the gravity sloshing and hydroelastic vibrations of liquids in hemispherical tanks and in a typical elastic aerospace propellant tank. With only a few series terms retained, the results correlate very well with existing analytical results, NASTRAN-generated analytical results, and experimental test results. Hence, although each term is based on a cylindrical tank geometry, the superposition can be successfully applied to noncylindrical tanks.

A mathematical representation of an advanced helicopter for piloted simulator investigations of control system and display variations

A mathematical model of an advanced helicopter is described. The model is suitable for use in control/display research involving piloted simulation. The general design approach for the six degree of freedom equations of motion is to use the full set of nonlinear gravitational and inertial terms of the equations and to express the aerodynamic forces and moments as the reference values and first order terms of a Taylor series expansion about a reference trajectory defined as a function of longitudinal airspeed. Provisions for several different specific and generic flight control systems are included in the model. The logic required to drive various flight control and weapon delivery symbols on a pilot's electronic display is also provided. Finally, the model includes a simplified representation of low altitude wind and turbulence effects. This model was used in a piloted simulator investigation of the effects of control system and display variations for an attack helicopter mission.

Two-dimensional representations of axisymmetric fields for computer calculations

An accurate representation of axisymmetric fields has been devised by extending the method of ideal current loops to off-axis fields. It is assumed that the data to be simulated are available through measurements or through a solution of a boundary value problem. The method provides an algebraic expression for the fields throughout a two-dimensional region of interest and eliminates the need for the axial expansion formula in approximating off-axis fields. The use of Gaussian and other functions as alternatives to the coil function is proposed. Examples of the technique in simulating a periodic permanent magnet (PPM) focusing field are presented and compared with a Fourier analysis of the problem.

Geometric representation methods for multi-type self-defining remote sensing data sets

Efficient and convenient representation of remote sensing data is highly important for an effective utilization. The task of merging different data types is currently dealt with by treating each case as an individual problem. A description is provided of work which is carried out to standardize the multidata merging process. The basic concept of the new approach is that of the self-defining data set (SDDS). The creation of a standard is proposed. This standard would be such that data which may be of interest in a large number of earth resources remote sensing applications would be in a format which allows convenient and automatic merging. Attention is given to details regarding the multidata merging problem, a geometric description of multitype data sets, image reconstruction from track-type data, a data set generation system, and an example multitype data set.

Representations of solar EUV fluxes for aeronomical applications

Pilot studies performed on Atmosphere Explorer-E satellite data on solar EUV fluxes for the rising part of the sunspot cycle 21 have demonstrated the feasibility of expressing the variability of solar EUV fluxes in aeronomically attractive terms involving a relatively small total number of date-dependent variables supported by the relatively large number of wavelength-peculiar parameters. Attention is given to the distribution of solar EUV sources and their variability, observations of solar cycle variations, and a model representation of EUV variability.

An application of the Braunbeck method to the Maggi-Rubinowicz field representation

The Braunbek method is applied to the generalized vector potential associated with the Maggi-rubinowicz representation. Under certain approximations, an asymptotic evaluation of the vector potential is obtained. For observation points away from caustics or shadow boundaries, the field derived from this quantity is the same as that determined from the geometrical theory of diffraction on a singly diffracted edge ray. An evaluation of the field for the simple case of a plane wave normally incident on a circular aperture is presented showing that the field predicted by the Maggi-Rubinowicz theory is continuous across the shadow boundary.

Modeling and analysis of several classes of self-oscillating inverters. I - State-plane representations. II - Model extension, classification, and duality relationships

The present investigation is concerned with an important class of power conditioning networks, taking into account self-oscillating dc-to-square-wave transistor inverters. The considered circuits are widely used both as the principal power converting and processing means in many systems and as low-power analog-to-discrete-time converters for controlling the switching of the output-stage semiconductors in a variety of power conditioning systems. Aspects of piecewise-linear modeling are discussed, taking into consideration component models, and an equivalent-circuit model. Questions of singular point analysis and state plane representation are also investigated, giving attention to limit cycles, starting circuits, the region of attraction, a hard oscillator, and a soft oscillator.

PAN AIR modeling studies. II - Sideslip option, network gaps, three-dimensional forebody flow, and thick-trailing-edge representation

PAN AIR is a computer program that calculates linear potential flow about arbitrary configurations at both subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers. This paper is a follow-on of another paper entitled 'PAN AIR Modeling Studies', in which several studies were presented that exhibited PAN AIR's versatility for modeling diverse configurations. Results from four modeling studies of interest in modeling realistic aircraft shapes are presented. The topics addressed are (1) half-geometry option in sideslip, (2) network gaps, (3) three-dimensional forebody flows, and (4) trailing-edge representation.

A connection between state-space and doubly coprime fractional representations

Explicit formulas for a doubly coprime fractional representation of the transfer function of a lumped LTI system are given in terms of a stabilizable and detectable state-space realization of the transfer function. These formulas allow existing computational algorithms to be utilized for the purpose of computing doubly coprime factorizations. Several additional implications of this result are briefly discussed, as are some immediate extensions and future research directions.

An integral representation of the generalized Euler-Mascheroni constants

The limit series for the Euler-Mascheroni constants is represented as an integral. Using this new representation, the first 200 values are computed along with assorted others up to 2000. The first 13 roots of gamma sub n, where n is a positive continuous variable, are also given.
