ISEE-C solar wind plasma experiment

Two 135 deg spherical section electrostatic analyzers furnish electron and ion measurements of the solar wind on ISEE-C. Each of these instruments utilizes a divided secondary emitter system to intercept the analyzed particles. Secondary electrons selected from all of the emitters simultaneously provide fast two-dimensional measurements of the particle fluxes integrated over polar angle; at a slower rate secondary electrons are successively selected from individual emitters to provide three-dimensional measurements. Speed of the ion measurements is increased by a factor of two by using an active proton peak tracking system to reduce the total range of energy per charge which has to be covered.

Polarization rotation in a ferroelectric BaTiO 3 film through low-energy He-implantation

Domain engineering in ferroelectric thin films is crucial for next-generation microelectronic and photonic technologies. Here, a method is demonstrated to precisely control domain configurations in BaTiO 3 thin films through low-energy He ion implantation. The approach transforms a mixed ferroelectric domain state with significant in-plane polarization into a uniform out-of-plane tetragonal phase by selectively modifying the strain state in the film’s top region. This structural transition significantly improves domain homogeneity and reduces polarization imprint, leading to symmetric ferroelectric switching characteristics. The demonstrated ability to manipulate ferroelectric domains post-growth enables tailored functional properties without compromising the coherently strained bottom interface. The method’s compatibility with semiconductor processing and ability to selectively modify specific regions make it particularly promising for practical implementation in integrated devices. This work establishes a versatile approach for strain-mediated domain engineering that could be extended to a wide range of ferroelectric systems, providing new opportunities for memory, sensing, and photonic applications where precise control of polarization states is essential.

Tailored Solvent Treatment for Optimized Production of Upcycled Anodes from End-Of-Life Li-Ion Batteries

Recycling processes for lithium-ion batteries typically overlook graphite because of its lower market value relative to that of transition-metal-containing cathode materials. However, graphite recovered from cycled lithium-ion batteries holds additional engineered value associated with the solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI). The SEI contributes critical electronic passivation of the graphite surface but becomes highly resistive with extended cycling, yielding poor cell performance. In this work, we apply tailored solvent treatment to end-of-life (EOL) graphite anodes to selectively remove adverse SEI components while retaining beneficially passivating species. We evaluate a series of polar protic solvents to achieve targeted removal of SEI components and control selectivity through rational variation in solvent properties. The physiochemical properties of treatment solvents correlate with both the retained SEI composition and the corresponding electrochemical performance of solvent-treated “upcycled” graphite anodes. Within the initial set of solvents evaluated, top-performing candidates show capacity and Coulombic efficiency nearly equivalent to those of an analogous pristine anode, as well as promising electrochemical performance enhancement with regard to irreversible capacity-loss metrics. This study establishes critical design principles for an optimized anode upcycling method that enhances the value of recycled graphite by retaining and upgrading the SEI.

The relationship of satellite-inferred stratospheric aerosol extinction to the position of the 50-mb north polar jet stream

The relationship between stratospheric aerosols and the location of the north polar night stratospheric jet stream was investigated for selected periods of four successive winters (1979-1982), using measurements from SAM II (Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement II) and SAGE I (Stratospheric Aerosol and Gas Experiment I) satellite-borne sun photometers and corresponding meteorological observations. Each period investigated included a polar stratospheric warming during which major dynamic meteorological changes are known to have perturbed the structure of the polar vortex. The analysis of variations in aerosol extinction mixing ratio patterns among winters and during major stratospheric warming events within separate winters showed a well-defined positive gradient in extinction mixing ratio and temperature across the jet stream from the cyclonic side to the anticyclonic side at altitudes between 20 and 30 km during each winter period. Estimates of extinction mixing ratio profiles measured near the center of the polar vortex suggest that a gradual subsidence took place within the polar vortex during at least three of the four winter periods.

Electrode Elastic Modulus as the Dominant Factor in the Capping Effect in Ferroelectric Hafnium Zirconium Oxide Thin Films

The discovery of ferroelectricity in hafnia based thin films has catalyzed significant research focused on understanding the ferroelectric property origins and means to increase stability of the ferroelectric phase. Prior studies have revealed that biaxial tensile stress via an electrode “capping effect” is a suspected ferroelectric phase stabilization mechanism. This effect is commonly reported to stem from a coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) incongruency between the hafnia and top electrode. Despite reported correlations between ferroelectric phase fraction and electrode CTE, the thick silicon substrate dominates the mechanics and CTE-related stresses, negating any dominant contribution from an electrode CTE mismatch toward the capping effect. In this work, these discrepancies are reconciled, and the origin of these differences deriving from electrode elastic modulus, not CTE, is demonstrated. Pt/M/TaN/Hf 0.5 Zr 0.5 O 2 /TaN/Si devices, where M is platinum, TaN, iridium, tungsten, and ruthenium, were fabricated. Sin 2 (ψ)-based X-ray diffraction measurements of biaxial stress in the HZO layer reveal a strong correlation between biaxial stress, remanent polarization, and electrode elastic modulus. Conversely, a low correlation exists between the electrode CTE, HZO biaxial stress, and remanent polarization. A higher elastic modulus enhances the resistance to electrode elastic deformation, which intensifies the capping effect during crystallization, and culminates in the tandem restriction of out-of-plane hafnia volume expansion and preferential orientation of the polar c-axis normal to the plane. These behaviors concomitantly increase the ferroelectric phase stability and polarization magnitude. This work provides electrode material selection guidelines toward the development of high-performing ferroelectric hafnia into microelectronic devices, such as nonvolatile memories.

Surface density of quasars in two high-latitude fields

Fourty-four objects selected for ultraviolet excess have been identified spectroscopically. The objects lie in two Palomar 1.2 m Schmidt fields in the north galactic polar cap, one of 7.7 sq deg centered on Kapteyn Selected Area 29, the other of 36 sq deg centered on SA 55. The objects are characterized by Color Classes (CC) 1A, 1, 1B, 1C, 2, and 3. Quasars comprise 75 percent of the CC 1A objects and 44 percent of the objects in the SA 29 field. Twelve quasars in the SA 29 field comprise a complete sample to B = 18.5 mag, and given an uncorrected surface density of 1.6 quasars/sq deg. This value is essentially that derived by Sandage (1969). Corrections are applied to account for the lack of high redshift quasars. An empirical correction is derived to account for lack of simultaneity in selection and photometry. A corrected lower limit to the surface density is estimated to be 1.85 quasars/sq deg to B = 18.5 mag.

Highly swollen ROMP-based gels

In this study, the leakage of organic solvent during the transportation and storage is one of the major threats to the environment. Networks/gels acting as the absorbing materials for organic solvents are the most promising solution for the organic solvent pollution. Here, we report the synthesis of highly swollen networks/gels in high yield (≥95%) via ring opening metathesis polymerization (ROMP) using Grubbs’ first generation catalyst/initiator (G1), a crosslinker (1,1'-(methylenedi-4,1-phenylene)bis-exo-7-oxanorbornenecarboximide) and monofunctional monomer/diluent (exo-N-phenyl-7-oxanorbornenecarboximide). The mesh size of the network was varied by keeping the concentration of monomer constant while changing the concentrations of crosslinker and G1 (initiator). The swelling capacity of the network in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solvent increased from 41 to 53 and to 61 with the increase of theoretical mesh size (molar ratio of monomer to crosslinker) from 20 to 40 and to 60, respectively. By further increasing the mesh size from 60 to 80 there was no significant change in swelling capacities (63). Thus, the gel with the mesh size of 60 was selected for swelling capacity analysis in other polar organic solvents such as dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), dichloromethane (DCM), chloroform and lithium-ion battery electrolyte solution (1.0 M LiPF 6 in ethylene carbonate (EC)/diethyl carbonate (DEC) = 50/50 (v/v)). They showed the decreased swelling capacity value from 61 to 57, 40, 31 and 5, respectively. For a controlled mesh size ROMP-based gel, we observed the highest swelling capacity values to date.

A versatile X-ray phase retarder for lock-in XMCD measurements

X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) is a technique commonly used to probe magnetic properties of materials with element and orbital selectivity, which requires the use of circularly polarized (CP) X-rays. It is possible to accomplish XMCD experiments with fixed CP and alternating the magnetic field orientation, but most reliable data are obtained when alternating the magnetization orientation and the polarization between right and left helicities. A versatile strategy has been developed to perform XMCD experiments using a hard X-ray quarter-wave plate, at both polychromatic dispersive and conventional monochromatic optics, in combination with synchronous data acquisition. The switching frequency waveform is fed into a lock-in amplifier to detect and amplify the XMCD signal. The results on a reference sample demonstrate an improvement in data quality and acquisition time. The instrumentation successfully generated 98% of CP X-rays switching the beam helicity at 13 Hz, with the possibility of faster helicity switching once it is installed at the new Brazilian fourth-generation source, SIRIUS.

Topological nanospaser

We propose a nanospaser made of an achiral plasmonic–metal nanodisk and a two-dimensional chiral gain medium – a monolayer nanoflake of a transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMDC). When one valley of the TMDC is selectively pumped (e.g. by a circular-polarized radiation), the spaser (surface plasmon amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) generates a mode carrying a topological chiral charge that matches that of the gain valley. There is another, chirally mismatched, time-reversed mode with exactly the same frequency but the opposite topological charge; it is actively suppressed by the gain saturation and never generates, leading to a strong topological protection for the generating matched mode. This topological spaser is promising for use in nano-optics and nanospectroscopy in the near field especially in applications to biomolecules that are typically chiral. Another potential application is a chiral nanolabel for biomedical applications emitting in the far field an intense circularly polarized coherent radiation.

Comparison of Polarized Radiative Transfer Codes Used by the EHT Collaboration

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT Collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I , Q , U , and V , respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties.

Remote double resonance coupling of radar energy to ionospheric irregularities

Experimental results indicate that low frequency modulation of a high power radar beam, tuned to one of the critical frequencies of the ionosphere, may produce field-aligned density irregularities when the modulation frequency matches an ionospheric eigenfrequency. By choosing the radar carrier frequency and polarization, a number of interaction layers were selected. The variety of possible excitations shows that the double resonance technique may be adaptable to a number of different objectives.

Diffuse interstellar band formation in dense clouds

Data are presented which show that the strengths of the diffuse interstellar bands at 4430, 5780, and 5797 A tend to be deficient with respect to color excess in the lines of sight to stars lying behind dense interstellar clouds. In addition, diffuse-band data for ten stars in the well-studied rho Ophiuchi cloud complex are presented, and systematic variations of band strengths with optical depth are discussed. It is found that the band strength per grain in the line of sight apparently decreases with increasing grain size, taking the ratio of total-to-selective absorption and the wavelength of maximum polarization as indicators of the latter. It is concluded that diffuse-band formation probably takes place most efficiently in the outer regions of interstellar clouds. This may be consistent with a diffuse-band origin in small grains which are coated by mantles in cloud interiors; or in some molecule or molecules which are most abundant in the outer portions of interstellar clouds.

High-resolution spectropolarimetry - A new atmospheric remote sensor

Polarimetry within a spectral line or band is proposed as a new atmospheric remote sensor, particularly for clouds and hazes. The limitations of conventional absorption/emission spectroscopy and photopolarimetry are discussed. The selective formation and behavior of intensity and polarization lines is analyzed under a variety of atmospheric and scattering conditions. The technique, limitations and advantages of Fourier Transform Spectroscopy are reviewed as a prelude to the proposed approach. Experimental results obtained at the telescope for the planet Venus are presented as evidence for the existence, behavior and effects of line polarization. Fourier Transform Spectropolarimetry provides means for separating the effects of scattering from those of absorption, probing the internal properties of clouds and hazes, and studying the detailed wavelength dependence of polarization with variable spectral resolutions from low to high.

Dual band combiner for horn antenna

A corrugated horn antenna, adapted to be coupled to a waveguide at its apex for X-band excitation is further adapted to be connected to waveguides through a circumferential slot for S-band excitation at four distinct phases selected for the desired S-band polarization. The circumferential slot is positioned along the axial length of the horn for good impedance matching and is provided with an X-band choke in the form of two concentric choke slots. For further improvement in impedance matching, the second (outer) choke slot is divided by plugs into four segments that coincide with waveguide ports for the four distinct phases of the S-band.

Low Earth Orbit Raider (LER) winged air launch vehicle concept

The need to launch small payloads into low earth orbit has increased dramatically during the past several years. The Low Earth orbit Raider (LER) is an answer to this need. The LER is an air-launched, winged vehicle designed to carry a 1500 pound payload into a 250 nautical mile orbit. The LER is launched from the back of a 747-100B at 35,000 feet and a Mach number of 0.8. Three staged solid propellant motors offer safe ground and flight handling, reliable operation, and decreased fabrication cost. The wing provides lift for 747 separation and during the first stage burn. Also, aerodynamic controls are provided to simplify first stage maneuvers. The air-launch concept offers many advantages to the consumer compared to conventional methods. Launching at 35,000 feet lowers atmospheric drag and other loads on the vehicle considerably. Since the 747 is a mobile launch pad, flexibility in orbit selection and launch time is unparalleled. Even polar orbits are accessible with a decreased payload. Most importantly, the LER launch service can come to the customer, satellites and experiments need not be transported to ground based launch facilities. The LER is designed to offer increased consumer freedom at a lower cost over existing launch systems. Simplistic design emphasizing reliability at low cost allows for the light payloads of the LER.

Ground and lower excited states of methyl peroxy, CH3O2, radical - A computational investigation

The ground and lower excited states of methyl peroxy, CH3O2, radical have been investigated at the selected pseudofirst-order configuration interaction level by use of a double-zeta basis set. Selected singles and doubles calculations using a polarized double-zeta basis have been carried out on the two lowest states in the A-double prime symmetry. Dissociation energies with respect to CH3O2 yields CH3 + O2 and CH3O + O are computed to be 2.01 and 3.37 eV, respectively. Curve crossings between various states and photodissociation products are discussed and the dipole moment along various slices through the potential energy surface is evaluated.
