Immersive environment technologies for planetary exploration with applications for mixed reality

Immersive environments are successfully being used to support mission operations at JPL. This technology contributed to the Mars Pathfinder Mission in planning sorties for the Sojourner rover. Results and operational experiences with these tools are being incorporated into the development of the second generation of mission planning tools.

Ultrasonic/Sonic Driller/Corer (USDC) as a sampler for future planetary exploration missions

Future NASA exploration missions to Mars, Europa, Titan, comets and asteroids are seeking to perform sampling, in-situ analysis and possibly return of material to Earth for further tests. One of the major limitations of sampling in low gravity environments is the conventional sampling in low gravity environments is the conventional drills need for high axial force. An ultrasonic/sonic driller/corer (USDC) mechanism was developed to address these and other limitations of existing drilling techniques.

Contribution of Surface Magnetic Recordings to Planetary Exploration

The transient variations of the magnetic field at the surface of a planet has a primary external source, the interaction between the environment of the planet and solar radiation, and a secondary source, the electric currents induced in the conductive planet. The continuous recording of the time variations of the magnetic fields at the surface of Mars by means of three component magnetometers installed onboard landers would therefor allow the study of both the internal structure of Mars and the dynamic of its ionized environment.
