The effects of thermal cycling on the thermal deformation of graphite-polyimide

The effects of repetitive thermal cycling on the thermal deformation of graphite-fiber-reinforced polyimide laminates are investigated. Unsymmetric and unidirectional laminate specimens were cycled in an oven between room temperature and 180 or 315 C five times, and temperature and deformation were recorded as a function of time in order to measure thermal deformation. The results of the lower temperature cycling reveal a hysteresis-like effect in the temperature-thermal deformation relation for a single cycle, while no differences are detected from one cycle to the next. The response of an eight-layer curved specimen is found to agree well with predictions based on a piecewise-linear lamination theory, however, four-layer laminate response could not be explained. The results of the high-temperature tests also indicate a dependence of the strain on whether the specimen was being heated or cooled, however quantitative results are considered unreliable, due to strain gage difficulties.

Food system galley for Space Shuttle

The Galley, a 42 man-day meal preparation facility (with flexibility to accomodate 210 man-days) is described. The facility is designed for minimum meal preparation and clean-up time in zero g and ease of servicing, maintenance, and removal in one gravity. The Galley provides a centralized location for performing all of the food-related functions (except dining) within the orbiter. Consideration is given to the oven-water heater, personal hygiene station, water dispensers, and water supply subsystem. The Galley is positioned in the orbiting mid deck, interfacing with rehydratable food packages and the waste collector subsystem.

Synthesis of perfluoroalkylether triazine elastomers

A method of perfluoroalkylether triazine elastomer synthesis is described. To form an elastomer, the resultant polymer is heated in a closed oven at slightly reduced pressures for 1-day periods at 100, 130 and 150 C. A high-molecular-weight perfluoroalkylether triazine elastomer is produced that exhibits thermal and oxidative stability. This material is potentially useful in applications such as high-temperature seals, 'O' rings, and wire enamels.

A small, passively operated hydrogen maser

The paper describes a compact passive hydrogen maser with unique features including a reduction in size. It uses a passive operation mode, permitting the use of a small microwave TE(011) cavity dielectrically loaded by a low loss alumina. The Teflon coated quartz bulb common in other masers has been replaced by a Teflon coating on the inside wall of the cavity producing a simpler designed and a more rugged H-maser package. The cavity and the attached endcaps comprise the vacuum envelope, allowing the use of a single vacuum system. The dimensional stability of the ceramic cavity under barometric changes is sufficiently within the range of the electronic cavity servo so that a second vacuum system is not required. For temperature control, a single oven is located in the magnetic shield nest.

Meals in orbit

Space foods which will be available to the Space Shuttle crew are discussed in view of the research and development of proper nutrition in space that began with the pastelike tube meals of the Mercury and Gemini astronauts. The variety of food types proposed for the Space Shuttle crew which include thermostabilized, intermediate moisture, rehydratable, irradiated, freeze-dried and natural forms are shown to be a result of the successive improvements in the Apollo, Skylab and Apollo Soyuz test project flights. The Space Shuttle crew will also benefit from an increase of caloric content (3,000 cal./day), the convenience of a real oven and a comfortable dining and kitchen area.

Satellite Power System (SPS) magnetron tube assessment study

The data base was extended with respect to the magnetron directional amplifier and its operating parameters that are pertinent to its application in the solar power satellite. On the basis of the resulting extended data base the design of a magnetron was outlined that would meet the requirements of the SPS application and a technology program was designed that would result in its development. The proposed magnetron design for the SPS is a close scale of the microwave oven magnetron, and resembles it closely physically and electrically.

Rapid solution casting under vacuum of very thick sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer

A technique has been developed for rapidly casting from solution under vacuum smooth, bubble-free, clear-white and uniformly thick (about 0.20 cm) sheets of a segmented polyurethane elastomer. The casting is carried out from dimethylformamide solutions inside temperature-controlled air-circulated ovens in order to minimize the establishment of thermal gradients throughout the casting solution. The technique produces quality sheets in 9 days, compared with 40-45 days for an inferior film produced in open pans.

Optically pumped laser lines of Na2 pumped by Kr/+/ /6471 A/ and HeNe /6328 A/ lasers - Identification of old lines and prediction of possible new lines

The laser emission lines of a sodium dimer laser pumped by Kr(+) and HeNe lasers at wavelengths of 6471 and 6328 A, respectively, are identified. The Na2 fluorescence was excited in a crossed heat pipe oven at a sodium pressure of about 1 torr, and recorded spectra were compared with transition probability calculations. For the 6471-A pump, three series excited by absorption through the transitions v-prime = 13, J-prime = 35 - v-double prime = 4, J-double prime = 34; v-prime = 13, J-prime = 83 - v-double-prime = 2, J-double prime = 84 and v-prime = 20, J-prime = 98 - v-double prime = 6, J-double prime = 99 are observed in the region 6100-8350 A. At 6328 A, series excited through the transitions v-prime = 14, J-prime = 45 - v-double prime = 2, J-double prime = 46; v-prime = 16, J-prime = 17 - v-double prime = 4, J-double prime = 18; v-prime = 22, J-prime = 86 - v-double prime = 6, J-double prime = 85 and v-prime = 25, J-prime = 87 - v-double prime = 8, J-double prime = 86. Most of the previously observed optically pumped lines are found to correspond to the three level laser system. Additional wavelengths expected to undergo lasing under slightly improved conditions are also identified.

No warmup crystal oscillator

During warmup, crystal oscillators often show a frequency offset as large as 1 part in 10 to the 5th power. If timing information is transferred to the oscillator and then the oscillator is allowed to warmup, a timing error greater than 1 millisecond will occur. For many applications, it is unsuitable to wait for the oscillator to warmup. For medium accuracy timing requirements where overall accuracies in the order of 1 millisecond are required, a no warmup crystal concept was developed. The concept utilizes two crystal oscillator, used sequentially to avoid using a crystal oscillator for timing much higher frequency accuracy once warmed up. The accuracy achieved with practical TCXOs at initial start over a range of temperatures is discussed. A second design utilizing two oven controlled oscillators is also discussed.

Laser-excitation technique for the measurement of absolute transition probabilities of weak atomic lines

A new technique is presented for the measurement of transition probabilities for weak allowed, intersystem, and forbidden lines. The method exploits the fact that oscillator strength is proportional to the number of stimulated absorptions and emissions produced by a narrow-band laser pulse of known energy which is in resonance with an atomic transition. The method is tested for a particular transition of Mg I with a known oscillator strength value and of appropriate magnitude. The number densities are measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer and the hook method for the lower level population and by measuring an absorption-equivalent width for the other. The apparatus consisted of a high-power tunable laser and a magnesium oven to produce excited Mg vapor, and a laser-plasma background continuum. The results are in good agreement with theoretical and other experimental data.
