Apparatus and methods for the measurement of gas volume fraction of produced oil are described. A first method measures the response of a pipe containing the produced oil excited by a source of vibration in the form of an acoustic frequency chirp containing a linearly varying range of frequencies in the tens of kilohertz range encompassing at least one resonant mode of the pipe. As the gas volume fraction increases, the location of the peak maximum of the measured frequency spectrum responsive to the excitation increases in frequency, and the height of the peak maximum increases, thereby permitting a linear calibration curve to be obtained. A second method measures the response of a pipe containing the produced oil to excitation by a continuous source of vibration having a chosen frequency above those which excite flexural vibrations in the pipe and simultaneously excite acoustic waves in the fluid contained in the pipe, known as the coincidence frequency. Gas present in the fluid will interrupt sound propagation or reverberation, thereby generating fluctuations in the amplitude of the measured vibrations of the pipe. The amplitude fluctuation level provides a measure of the gas volume present inside the pipe. A third method measures the response of a pipe containing the produced oil to excitation by a high-bandwidth, short pulse having a chosen center frequency above the coincidence frequency. Gas present in the fluid will interrupt pulse propagation, thereby generating fluctuations in the amplitude of the measured vibrations of the pipe.

MFIX-Exa targets the high-fidelity CFD-DEM model in which particles are unresolved by the fluid grid (typically using a fluid mesh approximately twice the particle diameter) but discrete particle dynamics including collisions are resolved with a simple linear-spring dashpot model. The fluid field is solved with a modern low Mach number formation of a cell-centered, nodal-pressure approximate projection method using a Godunov scheme . Physics capabilities include: complex geometries via embedded boundaries (EBs), open and closed system ideal gas equations of state, species transport and heterogeneous chemi- cal reactions. MFIX-Exa is built on the AMReX software framework, the ECP Block-Structured Adaptive Mesh Refinement (AMR) Co-Design Center, which allows the code to be portable and performant.Further integration into the ECP ecosystem includes HYPRE linear solvers and Ascent for in situ visualization. Current project efforts focus on scaling up realistic simulations to the KPP of the challenge problem: NETs 50kW chemical looping reactor, shakedown and scaling on JSLE and OLCF TDS systems and reaching for any remaining performance improvements.

FY22 FECM Spring R&D Project Review Meeting, Virtual, May 6, 2022
Methods of liquid and solid materials analysis by laser induced ablation spectroscopy are disclosed. The liquid and solid materials are analyzed in an instrument having one pulsed laser to produce emissive plasma plumes and ablate solid material. Liquid phase samples are aerosolized before streaming to an analysis zone where they are dissociated into a plasma plume. A large number of sites within solid phase sample structures and be analyzed using a movable x-y-z stage and displayed in a chemical map.
