40-meter-long REBCO tapes with critical current over 4,000 A/12 mm at 4.2 K and 13 T by advanced MOCVD

REBa 2 Cu 3 O 7–δ (REBCO, RE = rare earth) tapes doped with 5% and 15% Zr have been scaled up to lengths more than 40 m in a pilot-scale advanced metal organic chemical vapor deposition (A-MOCVD) tool. The precursor compositions used for the long tapes were guided by a study of the influence of (Ba + dopant)/Cu content on the critical current density (J c ) of 5 and 15 mol.% Hf- and Zr-added tapes at 4.2 K and 13 T. The 40-m-long tapes exhibited a critical current (I c ) over 4,000 A/12 mm at 4.2 K and 13 T as well as over 1,400 A/12 mm at 20 K and 20 T. The critical current densities of a 40-m-long tape doped with 5% Zr at 4.2 K measured at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory (NHMFL) were > 10 MAcm –2 and >5 MAcm –2 at 14 T and 30 T, respectively, which are over three times those of commercial REBCO tapes. The infield J c of 5% Zr-added 40-m-long tapes was similar to those of previously-reported high-performance short samples made with 15% Zr or Hf. These results demonstrate the excellent potential of A-MOCVD for manufacturing high I c REBCO tapes for use in ultrahigh-field magnet applications.

Effectiveness of Privacy Techniques in Smart Metering Systems

Smart grid technologies enable timely energy billing for residential homes. The ability to react to energy demands during peak hours allows energy providers to conserve power and operate efficiently. However, these data streams are also susceptible to privacy attacks within the energy company and from outside hackers. We implemented four different privacy models: k-anonymous, l-diversity, t-closeness, and ε-differential privacy. We demonstrate the models’ effectiveness using a real-world dataset composed of 15 different residential households with energy consumption data spanning over a year.

Agent-Based Framework for Supporting Behind the Meter Transactive Power Electronic Systems

In this paper, the concept of a framework based on an agent-based interface for power stages in a power electronic system is presented. The presented concept or agent system is able to consider any number of different types of sources, types of converters, communication protocols, embedded decision making to support transactive, and hierarchy for large system integration. The concept is presented through several examples including the implementation on an actual physical system and demonstration of transactive type controls.

An intelligent energy router for managing behind-the-meter resources and assets

With increase in distributed energy resources (DERs) and smart loads, each energy resource and load need a separate power conversion system leading to complex coordination and interaction, reduced energy conversion efficiency, coordinating compliance to grid standards (IEEE 1547) from multiple sources, reduced security. Also, multiple vendors with legacy system designs and proprietary communications interfaces result in redundancy and increase in cost of power electronics systems. This paper presents an energy router concept for buildings applications which provides autonomous power flow between sources and loads with a novel agent-based software interface.

Field-Aging Test Bed for Behind-the-Meter PV + Energy Storage

Small DC-coupled battery test systems are deployed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to evaluate capacity fade models and report on performance parameters such as round-trip efficiency under indoor and outdoor deployment scenarios. Initial commercial battery products include LG Chem RESU lithium-ion (Li-ion) and Avalon vanadium redox flow batteries. Adapting indoor lab-scale test methods to outdoor systems has challenges, including maintaining constant temperature and fully controlling batteries through standard discharge curves. Initial measurements show the Li-ion battery systems performing within expectations, near 85% round-trip efficiency. Initial lifetime modeling and measurements indicate that battery capacity could degrade by 20%-35% over 10 years at current rates.
