Interlayer Coupling Controlled Ordering and Phases in Polar Vortex Superlattices

The recent discovery of polar topological structures has opened the door for exciting physics and emergent properties. There is, however, little methodology to engineer stability and ordering in these systems, properties of interest for engineering emergent functionalities. Notably, when the surface area is extended to arbitrary thicknesses, the topological polar texture becomes unstable. Here we show that this instability of the phase is due to electrical coupling between successive layers. We demonstrate that this electrical coupling is indicative of an effective screening length in the dielectric, similar to the conductor–ferroelectric interface. Controlling the electrostatics of the superlattice interfaces, the system can be tuned between a pure topological vortex state and a mixed classical-topological phase. This coupling also enables engineering coherency among the vortices, not only tuning the bulk phase diagram but also enabling the emergence of a 3D lattice of polar textures.

Ferromagnetic Interlayer Exchange Coupling in a Few Layers of CrSBr on a Gold Thin Film

Abstract The two-dimensional character of van der Waals magnets allows for efficient control of their properties via proximity effects and electrical stimuli, making them promising candidates for application in spin electronics. We use spin-polarized low-energy electron microscopy to directly image the magnetic texture of thin CrSBr on top of a Au film, discovering a ferromagnetic ground state. We argue that the stabilization of the ferromagnetic ordering─as compared to the conventional antiferromagnetic one─is obtained via electron transfer from the Au film to the CrSBr flakes, in agreement with ab initio density functional theory calculations. Reflected-electron spectroscopy shows clear differences in the unoccupied density of states between a few layers of CrSBr on Au and bulk CrSBr, pointing toward electronic band structure modification in thin CrSBr. This work sheds light on the possibility of tuning the magnetic properties of two-dimensional magnets via substrate engineering.

Mitigating Interfacial Mismatch between Lithium Metal and Garnet-Type Solid Electrolyte by Depositing Metal Nitride Lithiophilic Interlayer

Solid-state lithium batteries are generally considered as the next-generation battery technology that benefits from inherent nonflammable solid electrolytes and safe harnessing of high-capacity lithium metal. Among various solid-electrolyte candidates, cubic garnet-type Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 ceramics hold superiority due to their high ionic conductivity (10 –3 to 10 –4 S cm -1 ) and good chemical stability against lithium metal. However, practical deployment of solid-state batteries based on such garnet-type materials has been constrained by poor interfacing between lithium and garnet that displays high impedance and uneven current distribution. Herein, we propose a facile and effective strategy to significantly reduce this interfacial mismatch by modifying the surface of such garnet-type solid electrolyte with a thin layer of silicon nitride (Si 3 N 4 ). This interfacial layer ensures an intimate contact with lithium due to its lithiophilic nature and formation of an intermediate lithium–metal alloy. The interfacial resistance experiences an exponential drop from 1197 to 84.5 Ω cm 2 . Lithium symmetrical cells with Si 3 N 4 -modified garnet exhibited low overpotential and long-term stable plating/stripping cycles at room temperature compared to bare garnet. Furthermore, a hybrid solid-state battery with Si 3 N 4 -modified garnet sandwiched between lithium metal anode and LiFePO 4 cathode was demonstrated to operate with high cycling efficiency, excellent rate capability, and good electrochemical stability. This work represents a significant advancement toward use of garnet solid electrolytes in lithium metal batteries for the next-generation energy storage devices.

Tuning the Charge Transport Property and Photocatalytic Activity of Anthracene-Based 1D π–d Conjugated Coordination Polymers by Interlayer Stacking

One-dimensional (1D) π–d-conjugated coordination polymers (CCPs) with charge delocalization have attracted significant attention due to their potential application in energy conversion and storage. However, the fundamental understanding of the correlation of their structural parameters with photophysical and photocatalytic properties remains underexplored. Herein, we report three novel Cu-node anthracene-based 1D π–d CCPs with systematic variation of steric groups (Ph > Me > H) at the 9 and 10 position of anthracene (denoted as An Ph , An Me , and An H ), which is aimed at altering the stacking of the polymer chains and its impact on the inter-chain charge transport property. Here, by using the combination of steady-state X-ray absorption spectroscopy, optical transient absorption spectroscopy, X-ray transient absorption spectroscopy, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, we show that the linear ligands (An Ph , An Me , and An H ) with different degrees of steric groups (Ph > Me > H) introduced at the 9 and 10 position of anthracene can alter the stacking of the polymer chains and thus impact their crystallinity, charge separation, and charge transport property, which in turn impacts their photocatalytic performance for hydrogen evolution reaction.

Photoactivated p-Doping of Organic Interlayer Enables Efficient Perovskite/Silicon Tandem Solar Cells

Solution-processed organic semiconductor layers on rough surfaces tend to vary widely in thickness, significantly hindering charge extraction in relevant optoelectronic devices. Herein, we report the photoactivated p-doping of hole-transporting material (HTM) to enhance hole extraction for (textured) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, making the device performance less sensitive to the variation of hole transport layer thickness. We used the ionic compound 4-isopropyl-4'-methyldiphenyliodonium tetrakis(penta-fluorophenyl-borate) (DPI-TPFB) as a p-type dopant in poly(triaryl amine) (PTAA), which we used as the HTM. We observed that light soaking DPI-TPFB-doped PTAA shows approximately 22 times higher conductivity compared with an undoped PTAA film, which translated into an improved fill factor (FF) for tandem solar cells. Our tandem solar cells achieved an ~80% FF and 27.8% efficiency and operated at their maximum power point for 200 h without loss of performance, in addition to retaining ~83% of initial performance over a month of operation in an outdoor environment.

2D-Covalent Organic Frameworks with Interlayer Hydrogen Bonding Oriented through Designed Nonplanarity

We report the synthesis and characterization of a new class of 2D-covalent organic frameworks, called COFamides, whose layers are held together by amide hydrogen bonds. To accomplish this, we have designed monomers with a nonplanar structure that arises from steric crowding, forcing the amide side groups out of plane with the COF sheets orienting the hydrogen bonds between the layers. Here, the presence of these hydrogen bonds provides significant structural stabilization as demonstrated by comparison to control structures that lack hydrogen bonding capability, resulting in lower surface area and crystallinity. We have characterized both azine and imine-linked versions of these COFs, named COFamide-1 and -2, respectively, for their surface areas, pore sizes, and crystallinity. In addition to these more conventional characterization methods, we also used variable temperature infrared spectroscopy methods and van der Waals density functional calculations to directly observe the presence of hydrogen bonding.
