Magnetic structure and multiferroicity of Sc-substituted hexagonal YbFeO 3

The hexagonal rare-earth ferrite RFeO 3 family represents a unique class of multiferroics exhibiting weak ferromagnetism, and a strong coupling between magnetism and structural trimerization is predicted. However, the hexagonal structure for RFeO 3 remains metastable in conventional conditions. We have succeeded in stabilizing the hexagonal structure of polycrystalline YbFeO 3 by partial Sc substitution of Yb. Using bulk magnetometry and neutron diffraction, we find that Yb 0.42 Sc 0.58 FeO 3 orders into a canted antiferromagnetic state with the Néel temperature T N ~ 165K, below which the Fe 3+ moments form the triangular configuration in the ab plane and their in-plane projections are parallel to the [100] axis, consistent with magnetic space group P6 3 c'm'. It is determined that the spin canting is aligned along the c axis, giving rise to the weak ferromagnetism. Furthermore, the Fe 3+ moments reorient toward a new direction below reorientation temperature T R ~ 40K, satisfying magnetic subgroup P6 3 , while the Yb 3+ moments order independently and ferrimagnetically along the c axis at the characteristic temperature T Yb ~ 15K. Interestingly, reproducible modulation of electric polarization induced by magnetic field at low temperature is achieved, suggesting that the delicate structural distortion associated with two-up/one-down buckling of the Yb/Sc planes and tilting of the FeO 5 bipyramids may mediate the coupling between ferroelectric and magnetic orders under magnetic field. Furthermore, the present work represents substantial progress to search for high-temperature multiferroics in hexagonal ferrites and related materials.

Giant magnetostriction and nonsaturating electric polarization up to 60 T in the polar magnet $\mathrm{CaBaCo_4O_7}$

Giant magnetostriction in insulating magnetic materials is highly required for applications but is rarely observed. Here we show that giant magnetostriction (> 1500 ppm) can be achieved in an insulating transition metal oxide CaBaCo 4 O 7 where the ferrimagnetic ordering at T c ~ 62K is associated with a huge change in the lattice. Moreover, because this material is pyroelectric with a nonswitchable electric polarization (P), the giant magnetostriction results in a pronounced magnetoelectric effect—a huge change of electric polarization (ΔP ~ 1.6μC/cm 2 ) in response to the applied magnetic field up to 60 T. Geometric frustration as well as the orbital instability of Co 2+ /Co 3+ ions is believed to play a crucial role in the giant magnetostriction. Here our study provides insights on how to achieve both giant magnetostriction and pronounced magnetoelectric effect in insulating transition metal oxides.

Tuning magnetism and band topology through antisite defects in Sb-doped MnBi 4 ⁢Te 7

The fine control of magnetism and electronic structure in a magnetic topological insulator is crucial in order to realize various novel magnetic topological states including axion insulators, magnetic Weyl semimetals, Chern insulators, etc. Through crystal growth, transport, thermodynamic, neutron diffraction measurements, we show that under Sb doping the newly discovered intrinsic antiferromagnetic (AFM) topological insulator MnBi 4 Te 7 evolves from AFM to ferromagnetic (FM) and then ferrimagnetic. We attribute this to the formation of Mn(Bi,Sb) antisites upon doping, which results in additional Mn sublattices that modify the delicate interlayer magnetic interactions and cause the dominant Mn sublattice to go from AFM to FM. We further investigate the effect of antisites on the band topology using the first-principles calculations. Without considering antisites, the series evolves from AFM topological insulator (x=0) to FM axion insulators. In the exaggerated case of 16.7% of periodic antisites, the band topology is modified and a type-I magnetic Weyl semimetal phase can be realized at intermediate dopings. Therefore, this doping series provides a fruitful platform with continuously tunable magnetism and topology for investigating emergent phenomena, including quantum anomalous Hall effect, Fermi arc states, etc.

Anisotropically large anomalous and topological Hall effect in a kagome magnet

Recently, kagome materials have become an engrossing platform to study the interplay among symmetry, magnetism, topology, and electron correlation. The latest works in RMn6Sn6 (R = rare earth metal) have illustrated that this family could be intriguing to investigate various physical phenomena due to large spin-orbit coupling and strong magnetic ordering. However, combined transport and spectroscopic studies in RMn6Sn6 materials are still limited. Here, we report magnetic, magneto-transport, and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements of a kagome magnet ErMn 6 Sn 6 that undergoes antiferromagnetic (T N = 345 K) to ferrimagnetic (T c = 68 K) phase transitions. We observe a large anomalous and topological Hall effect serving as transport signatures of the nontrivial Berry curvature. Our spectroscopic results complemented by theoretical calculations show the multi-orbital kagome fermiology. This work provides new insight into the tunability and interplay of topology and magnetism in a kagome magnet.

Probing the tunability of magnetism with external pressure in metastable Sr 2 NiIrO 6 double perovskite

In Sr 2 NiIrO 6 long-range Ir-Ir antiferromagnetic exchange interactions have been reported to overcome the ferromagnetic Ni-Ir interactions hampering the otherwise expected ferromagnetic behavior. Prompted by this, a combination of x-ray absorption spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction at high pressure is used here to investigate the interplay between the magnetic structure of the Ir sublattice and lattice degrees of freedom. In this work, the compression of Sr 2 NiIrO 6 drives an unexpected nonmonotonic change of the x-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) spectra: The intensity first decreases in the 0- to 18-GPa range, then shows an increase in the 18- to 30-GPa range and again decreases for higher pressures. The XMCD intensity, a measure of the net magnetization in the Ir sublattice, however, is found to remain very low in the whole pressure range so the observed changes do not correspond with a transition from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic order. The evolution of the XMCD is better explained in terms of a weakening/strengthening of the long-range antiferromagnetic (AFM) IrIr interaction between ferromagnetic planes associated with the reduction of the lattice parameters. In particular, a correlation can be established between the evolution of the b/a ratio and the weakening/strengthening of the AFM interaction.

Magnetic properties of equiatomic CrMnFeCoNi

Magnetic, specific heat, and structural properties of the equiatomic Cantor alloy system are reported for temperatures between 5 and 300 K, and up to fields of 70 kOe. Here magnetization measurements performed on as-cast, annealed, and cold-worked samples reveal a strong processing history dependence and that high-temperature annealing after cold working does not restore the alloy to a “pristine” state. Measurements on known precipitates show that the two transitions, detected at 43 and 85 K, are intrinsic to the Cantor alloy and not the result of an impurity phase. Experimental and ab initio density functional theory computational results suggest that these transitions are a weak ferrimagnetic transition and a spin-glass-like transition, respectively, and magnetic and specific heat measurements provide evidence of significant Stoner enhancement and electron-electron interactions within the material.

Spin-phonon interaction and short-range order in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6

The vibrational properties of ferrimagnetic Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 single crystals are investigated using Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Eighteen Raman-active modes are identified, 14 of which are assigned according to the trigonal symmetry. Four additional peaks, obeying the A 1g selection rules, are attributed to the overtones. The unconventional temperature evolution of the A$^{5}_{1g}$ mode self-energy suggests a competition between different short-range magnetic correlations that significantly impact the spin-phonon interaction in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 . This research provides comprehensive insight into the lattice properties, studies their temperature dependence, and shows arguments for the existence of competing short-range magnetic phases in Mn 3 Si 2 Te 6 .

Three-state Potts nematic order in stacked frustrated spin models with SO(3) symmetry

Here, we propose stacked two-dimensional lattice designs of frustrated and SO(3) symmetric spin models consisting of antiferromagnetic (AF) triangular and ferromagnetic (FM) sixfold symmetric sublattices that realize emergent $\mathbb{Z}_{3}$ Potts nematic order. Considering bilinear-biquadratic spin interactions, our models describe an SO(3)-symmetric triangular lattice AF subject to a fluctuating magnetization arising from the FM coupled sublattice. We focus on the classical AFM-FM windmill model and map out the zero- and finite-temperature phase diagram using Monte Carlo simulations and analytical calculations. We discover a state with composite Potts nematic order above the ferrimagnetic three-sublattice up-up-down ground state and relate it to Potts phases in SO(3)-broken Heisenberg and Ising AFMs in external magnetic fields. Finally, we show that the biquadratic exchange in our model is automatically induced by thermal and quantum fluctuations in the purely bilinear Heisenberg model, easing the requirements for realizing these lattice designs experimentally.

Multi-$\mathcal{k}$ magnetic structure and large anomalous Hall effect in candidate magnetic Weyl semimetal NdAlGe

Here, the magnetic structure, magnetoresistance (MR), and Hall effect of the noncentrosymmetric magnetic semimetal NdAlGe are investigated, revealing an unusual magnetic state and anomalous transport properties that are associated with the electronic structure of this compound. The magnetization and MR measurements are both highly anisotropic and indicate an Ising-like magnetic system. The magnetic structure is complex in that it involves two magnetic ordering vectors, including an incommensurate spin density wave and commensurate ferrimagnetic state in zero field. We have discovered a large anomalous Hall conductivity that reaches ≈430 Ω –1 cm –1 , implying that it originates from an intrinsic Berry curvature effect stemming from Weyl nodes found in the electronic structure. These electronic structure calculations indicate the presence of nested Fermi surface pockets with nesting wave vectors like the measured magnetic ordering wave vector and the presence of Weyl nodes in proximity to the Fermi surface. We associate the incommensurate magnetic structure with the large anomalous Hall response to be the result of the combination of Fermi surface nesting and the Berry curvature associated with Weyl nodes.

Origin of magnetic ordering in half-Heusler RuMnGa

The half-Heusler alloy RuMnGa having valence electron count (VEC) 18 has recently been theoretically proposed to exhibit compensated ferrimagnetic (CFiM) character instead of the expected nonmagnetic ground state. On the other hand, a preliminary experimental study proposed ferromagnetic (FM) ordering. As no half-Heusler system with VEC 18 is known to exhibit magnetic ordering, we have investigated the details of crystal structure and magnetic properties of RuMnGa using a combination of experimental tools, viz., x-ray and neutron diffraction techniques, dc and ac susceptibility, isothermal magnetization, heat capacity, resistivity and neutron depolarisation measurements. Rietveld refinements of x-ray and neutron diffraction data suggest single phase nature of the compound with elemental composition RuMn 0.86 Ga 1.14 . We have shown that the system exhibits FM-type ordering owing to the inherent presence of this minor off-stoichiometry, showing very low magnetic moment. Further, the system also exhibits reentrant canonical spin-glass behavior, which is rarely observed in half-Heusler alloys. The temperature coefficient of resistivity changes its sign from negative to positive and further to negative as the temperature decreases.

Field-induced spin polarization in the lightly Cr-substituted layered antiferromagnet NiP S 3

Tuning magnetic properties in layered magnets is an important route to realize novel phenomenon related to two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Recently, tuning antiferromagnetic (AFM) properties through substitution and intercalation techniques has been widely studied in MPX 3 compounds. Interesting phenomena, such as diverse AFM structures and even the signatures of ferrimagnetism, have been reported. However, long-range ferromagnetic (FM) ordering has remained elusive. Here, in this work, we explored the magnetic properties of the Cr-substituted NiP S 3 . We found that Cr substitution is extremely efficient in controlling spin orientation in NiP S 3 . Our study reveals a field-induced spin polarization in lightly (9%) Cr-substituted NiP S 3 , which is likely attributed to the attenuation of AFM interactions and magnetic anisotropy due to Cr doping. Our work provides a possible strategy to achieve FM phase in AFM MPX 3 , which could be useful for investigating 2D magnetism as well as potential device applications.

Out-of-plane magnetic phase diagram of the Kitaev quantum magnet Na 2 Co 2 TeO 6

We have investigated the magnetic properties and mapped out the phase diagram of the honeycomb magnet Na 2⁢ Co 2 ⁢TeO 6 with Co 3d 7 in out-of-plane magnetic fields. This material has previously been proposed to show nearest-neighbor Kitaev interactions between Co spins and maybe even Kitaev quantum spin liquid behavior in high fields. At 0.01 T, we observe a thermal phase transition at T N = 27K, transitioning from a paramagnetic state to a canonical ferrimagnetic state. Upon increasing the magnetic field, a spin-floplike phase transition occurred before saturation of J = 1/2 between 10 K and T N . Below 10 K, a peak-dip-peak structure emerges between 10 and 17 T in the magnetic susceptibility (d⁢M/⁢dH) before the magnetic saturation, reminiscent of magnetization plateau behavior. The measurement of the magnetocaloric effect also shows dip-peak-dip behavior in this field range. Our data can be explained by an XXZ model with a single ion anisotropy and possibly small Kitaev and Γ exchange interactions. Finally, we also determined the magnetization saturation field that helps constrain the energy scale of the exchange interactions.

Disorder driven crossover between anomalous Hall regimes in Fe 3 GaTe 2

The large anomalous Hall conductivity (AHC) of the Fe 3 ⁢(Ge,Ga)⁢Te 2 compounds has attracted considerable attention. Here, we expose the intrinsic nature of the AHC in Fe 3 ⁢GaTe 2 crystals characterized by high conductivities, which show disorder-independent AHC with a pronounced value 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$≈ 420 Ω −1 ⁢cm −1 . In the low-conductivity regime, we observe the scaling relation 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ∝ 𝜎$^{1.6}_{𝑥⁢𝑥}$, which crosses over to 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑦 ≃ 𝜎$^{c}_{𝑥⁢𝑦}$ as 𝜎 𝑥⁢𝑥 increases. Disorder in low-conductivity crystals is confirmed by the broadening of a first-order transition between ferromagnetism and the ferrimagnetic ground state. Through density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we reveal that the dominant sources of Berry curvature are located a few hundred meV below the Fermi energy around the Γ point. Furthermore, Fe 3⁢ GaTe 2 clearly exposes the disorder-induced crossover among distinct AHC regimes, previously inferred from measurements on different ferromagnets located on either side of the crossover region.

Observation of Magnon Polarization

We measure the mode-resolved direction of the precessional motion of the magnetic order, i.e.,magnon polarization, via the chiral term of inelastic polarized neutron scattering spectra. The magnon polarization is a unique and unambiguous signature of magnets and is important in spintronics, affecting thermodynamic properties such as the magnitude and sign of the spin Seebeck effect. However, it has never been directly measured in any material until this work. The observation of both signs of magnon polarization in Y 3 Fe 5 O 12 also gives direct proof of its ferrimagnetic nature. The experiments agree very well with atomistic simulations of the scattering cross section.

Nanomagnonic Cavities for Strong Spin-Magnon Coupling and Magnon-Mediated Spin-Spin Interactions

We present a theoretical approach to use ferromagnetic or ferrimagnetic nanoparticles as microwave nanomagnonic cavities to concentrate microwave magnetic fields into deeply subwavelength volumes ~ 10 –13 mm 3 . In this work, we show that the field in such nanocavities can efficiently couple to isolated spin emitters (spin qubits) positioned close to the nanoparticle surface reaching the single magnon-spin strong-coupling regime and mediate efficient long-range quantum state transfers between isolated spin emitters. Nanomagnonic cavities thus pave the way toward magnon-based quantum networks and magnon-mediated quantum gates.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4 f - 5 d double perovskite iridates X 2 ZnIrO 6 ( X = Nd , Sm , Eu , Gd )

Here in this paper, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu, Gd. These compounds present examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A 2 BB'O6) with a magnetic 4ƒ-ion on the A site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d transition-metal ion Ir 4+ on the B sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd 2 ZnIrO 6 and Eu 2 ZnIrO 6 show ferrimagnetic or canted antiferromagnetic order below T N = 23 and 12 K, respectively. Sm 2 ZnIrO 6 orders antiferromagnetically at T N = 13 K. Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 exhibits more complex magnetic properties with a strong field dependence ranging from a two-step spin reorientation at μ 0 H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields to a spin-flop phase for 0H ≥ 4 T. This unique behavior suggests an interesting interplay between Nd 3+ and Ir 4+ . To further shed light on the relevant magnetic interaction, the zero-field magnetic ground state of Nd 2 ZnIrO 6 is examined via neutron powder diffraction. In general, the magnetic properties of Ln 2 ZnIrO 6 hint towards a substantial contribution of the rare-earth ions and a significant correlation between 5d and 4ƒ magnetism.

First- and second-order magnetic anisotropy and damping of europium iron garnet under high strain

Understanding and tailoring static and dynamic properties of magnetic insulator thin films is important for spintronic device applications. Here, we grow atomically flat epitaxial europium iron garnet (EuIG) thin films by pulsed laser deposition on (111)-oriented garnet substrates with a range of lattice parameters. By controlling the lattice mismatch between EuIG and the substrates, we tune the strain in EuIG films from the compressive to the tensile regime, which is characterized by x-ray diffraction. Using ferromagnetic resonance (FMR), we find that, in addition to the first-order perpendicular magnetic anisotropy which depends linearly on the strain, there is a significant second-order one that has a quadratic strain dependence. Inhomogeneous linewidth of the FMR increases notably with increasing strain, while the Gilbert damping parameter remains nearly constant (≈ 2 × 10 –2 ). Finally, these results provide valuable insight into the spin dynamics in ferrimagnetic insulators and useful guidance for material synthesis and engineering of next-generation spintronics applications.

Unusual magnetic and transport properties in HoMn 6 Sn 6 kagome magnet

Here, with intricate lattice structures, kagome materials are an excellent platform to study various fascinating topological quantum states. In particular, kagome materials, revealing large responses to external stimuli such as pressure or magnetic field, are subject to special investigation. Here we study the kagome-net HoMn 6 Sn 6 magnet that undergoes paramagnetic to ferrimagnetic transition (below 376 K) and reveals spin-reorientation transition below 200 K. In this compound, we observe the topological Hall effect and substantial contribution of anomalous Hall effect above 100 K. We unveil the pressure effects on magnetic ordering at a low magnetic field from the pressure tunable magnetization measurement. By utilizing high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, Dirac-like dispersion at the high-symmetry point K is revealed in the vicinity of the Fermi level, which is well supported by the first-principles calculations. Our investigation will pave the way to understanding the magnetotransport and electronic properties of various rare-earth-based kagome magnets.
