Comparison of convolutional and block code performance on the Rician channel

The paper is concerned with the relative performance of short constraint length convolutional codes vis-a-vis block codes when used in conjunction with either BPSK or DPSK modulation on the classical Rician fading channel. A variety of soft-decision decoding algorithms is considered for block codes while the Viterbi algorithm is used exclusively for decoding convolutional codes. Results indicate a substantial performance/complexity advantage in favor of short constraint length convolutional codes and Viterbi decoding which increases with fading severity. The work reported here extends the well-known performance advantage of convolutional codes on the AWGN channel to representative fading channels.

Observations of two distinct populations of bow shock ions in the upstream solar wind

Observations upstream of the earth's bow shock with the LASL/MPI fast plasma experiments on ISEE 1 and 2 reveal the presence of two distinct and mutually exclusive populations of low energy (no more than 40 keV) ions apparently accelerated at the bow shock. The first of these, the 'reflected' population, is characterized by (1) sharply peaked spectra seldom extending much above about 10 keV/ion and (2) relatively collimated flow coming from the direction of the shock. On the other hand, the 'diffuse' ions are distinguished by relatively flat energy spectra above about 10 keV and broad angular distributions. They are by far the most commonly observed upstream ion event. A close causal association is suggested between the diffuse ion population in the upstream solar wind and energetic plasma ions observed within the magnetosheath.

An algorithm for optimal structural design with frequency constraints

The paper presents a finite element method for minimum weight design of structures with lower-bound constraints on the natural frequencies, and upper and lower bounds on the design variables. The design algorithm is essentially an iterative solution of the Kuhn-Tucker optimality criterion. The three most important features of the algorithm are: (1) a small number of design iterations are needed to reach optimal or near-optimal design, (2) structural elements with a wide variety of size-stiffness may be used, the only significant restriction being the exclusion of curved beam and shell elements, and (3) the algorithm will work for multiple as well as single frequency constraints. The design procedure is illustrated with three simple problems.

Some results of the UA-ARE Program

During the period of May 6-16, 1977, the University of Arizona Aerosol Research Group conducted a cooperative Aerosol and Radiation Experiment (UA-ARE Program) in Tucson, Ariz. The principal objective of the program was to compare how well theoretically computed fluxes at selected visible wavelengths agreed with measured fluxes for the case where the theoretical flux calculations were based on inferred atmospheric aerosol parameters derived exclusively from simultaneous optical remote sensing measurements. A second objective of the experiment was to intercompare the results obtained by different remote sensing techniques. The various measurement techniques employed in the UA-ARE Program are listed along with brief summaries of the information to be derived from the data obtained with each technique.

Acoustic duct liner optimization using finite elements

Determination of a mathematical model which may be used for obtaining optimum acoustic liners in aeroengine ducts was the goal of this study. Starting with a baseline finite element model which consumed too much computer time to permit optimum liner evaluation for realistic ducts and source frequencies, a survey was conducted of candidate methods for reducing computational effort. A highly effective boundary exclusive decomposition method was developed which enables L-U decomposition of a major partition of the global matrix to be performed once only. Timing experiments using the technique in duct liner optimization show a reduction of between one and two orders of magnitude in the central processor unit (CPU) time of the baseline model.

Characteristics of trough region auroral patches and detached arcs observed by Isis 2

All of the data presented in this paper were obtained from the Isis 2 satellite, which was launched into a 1400-km near-circular polar orbit in April 1971. Instruments used in this study include the topside sounder for providing vertical profiles of the electron density, the Langmuir probe for measuring electron temperature and concentration, and the auroral scanning photometer for detecting optical emissions at 5577 A and 3914 A. Two distinct types of auroras (east-west-aligned oval-shaped 'patches', and isolated east-west 'detached arcs') are observed in the trough region (almost exclusively in the Northern Hemisphere) equatorward of the diffuse auroral boundary. Attention is given to comparison of patches and detached arcs, relation to magnetic indices, and relation to detached plasma and ELF hiss.

Development of space manufacturing systems concepts utilizing lunar resources

Results of a NASA sponsored study to evaluate the merits of constructing solar power satellites using lunar and terrestrial resources are reviewed. Three representative lunar resources utilization (LRU) concepts were developed and compared with a previously designed earth baseline concept, and major system hardware elements as well as personnel requirements were defined. LRU for space construction was shown to be competitive with earth baseline approach for a program requiring 10 to the 5th metric tons per year of completed satellites. Results also indicated that LRU can reduce earth launched cargo requirements to less than 10% of that needed to build satellites exclusively from earth materials, with a significant percentage of the reduction due to the use of liquid oxygen derived from lunar soil. A concept using the mass driver to catapult lunar material into space was found to be superior to the other LRU logistics techniques investigated.

Trace element evidence for a laterally inhomogeneous moon

A number of trace element interrelationships support the concept of a laterally inhomogeneous moon based originally on Clr/P2O5 ratios. The correspondence between Clr/P2O3 and Rb/Sr ratios in basalts are of special interest since the isotropic evolution of the latter pair of elements relates to the earliest history of the moon. This implies the times when the Clr/P2O5 relationships were established. The early magma ocean is conjectured to have been made up of non-intermixing seas resulting either from large convection cells or large body accretion. These mutually exclusive regions could be lunar geological provinces. It is proposed that the diversity of basalts from the Apollo 17 site is related to the lateral inhomogeneity of the moon. Ca/Na ratios in basalts show a trend which parallels that of Ru/Os and in a corresponding fashion may serve as a depth indicator.

Clast assemblages of possible deep-seated /77517/ and immiscible-melt /77538/ origins in Apollo 17 breccias

Breccia samples 77517 and 77538 are composed of abundant mineral and lithic clasts set in porous, poorly sintered matrices. Clast assemblages in the two rocks are of contrasting composition and origin. Breccia 77517 has Mg-rich olivine and pyroxene and calcic plagioclase clasts, indicating limited, almost exclusively ANT-suite parentage. A significant feature is the presence of an assemblage (aluminous enstatite, forsterite, anorthite, aluminous spinel) corresponding to spinel cataclasite, a rock type of deep-seated (about 60 km) crustal origin. Breccia 77538 contains Fe-rich pyroxene and rather sodic plagioclase clasts, indicative of predominantly KREEP and/or mare derivation. An important feature is the occurrence of high-K and high-Fe lithic clasts whose compositions resemble those of immiscible-melts produced during late-stage magmatic crystallization, and which probably originated via silicate liquid immiscibility in a KREEP or mare basalt magma. Both rocks contain numerous fine-grained breccia clasts which represent material that has been modified by impact processes at or very near the moon's surface.

Processing by data and program blocks

A processing system is presented that implements simultaneously the efficiency of the special-purpose processor and the total applicability of the general-purpose computer - characteristics commonly thought of as being mutually exclusive. This is achieved through specializing the machine by programming the hardware structure, rather than by adding software systems to it. Data are organized in circulating pages which form a multiplicity of local dynamic memories for each process. Programs are made up of modules, each describing a transient special-purpose machine. A characteristic of this approach is that the processes are data-driven, rather than program-driven. The programming language presents significant flexibility and efficiency in modeling certain classes of problems, and it may be of interest as an implementation model in a broader context. Applications to real-time processing of radar signals are reported. The relevance of characteristics of this system to problems in multiprogramming and multiprocessing systems is discussed.

Cost comparisons for the use of nonterrestrial materials in space manufacturing of large structures

This paper presents results of a study sponsored by NASA to evaluate the relative merits of constructing solar power satellites (SPS) using resources obtained from the earth and from the moon. Three representative lunar resources utilization (LRU) concepts are developed and compared with a previously defined earth baseline concept. Economic assessment of the alternatives includes cost determination, economic threshold sensitivity to manufacturing cost variations, cost uncertainties, program funding schedule, and present value of costs. Results indicate that LRU for space construction is competitive with the earth baseline approach for a program requiring 100,000 metric tons per year of completed satellites. LRU can reduce earth-launched cargo requirements to less than 10% of that needed to build satellites exclusively from earth materials. LRU is potentially more cost-effective than earth-derived material utilization, due to significant reductions in both transportation and manufacturing costs. Because of uncertainties, cost-effectiveness cannot be ascertained with great confidence. The probability of LRU attaining a lower total program cost within the 30-year program appears to range from 57 to 93%.

All-inorganic spark-chamber frame

Outgassing is reduced by using ceramic and glass materials exclusively. Frames are assembled from four beams with rabbeted ends. Only ceramic or glass adhesives are used, and printed circuit is applied by screen printing directly on beams. Inorganic frames provide stable spark-chamber operation without gas refill, useful in terrestrial gamma-ray studies, in high-energy physics research, and other applications.

Central atlantic regional ecological test site: A prototype regional environmental information system, volume 1

The Central Atlantic Regional Ecological Test Site (CARETS) project was a demonstration project for introducing data from Landsat and high-altitude aircraft sensors into regional land planning and management. This report summarizes the CARETS project results and describes its output of maps, reports, computer tapes, and other products. CARETS used a geographic information system model under which land use maps were prepared from sensor data, then digitized, processed, and linked to other environmental and social data sets, and to environmental consequences such as air pollution, stream runoff, local climatic factors, and coastal erosion. Landsat data showed the test region in 1972 to be nine percent urban and built-up land, 38 percent agriculture, 50 percent forest, three percent nonforested wetlands, and less than one percent barren land, exclusive of water-covered areas. User surveys, conferences, and workshops involving 65 agencies facilitated widespread distribution of data products and produced evaluations concerning their usefulness. We found a heterogeneous user community with diverse information needs largely preferring aerial photographs rather than satellite multispectral scanner data. Among project recommendations are establishment of a network of regional land resource information centers, working toward improved compatibility of Federal, State and local information programs supportive of land use decisions.

Use of satellite data in runoff forecasting in the heavily forested, cloud-covered Pacific Northwest

The author has identified the following significant results. Satellite-derived snow cover data improves forecasts of stream flow but not at a statistically significant amount and should not be used exclusively because of persistent cloud cover. Based upon reconstruction runs, satellite data can be used to augment snow-flight data in the Upper Snake, Boise, Dworshak, and Hungry Horse basins. Satellite data does not compare well with aerial snow-flight data in the Libby basin.

Systems definition study for shuttle demonstration flights of large space structures, Volume 2: Technical Report

The development of large space structure (LSS) technology is discussed, with emphasis on space fabricated structures which are automatically manufactured in space from sheet-strip materials and assembled on-orbit. It is concluded that an LSS flight demonstration using an Automated Beam Builder and the orbiter as a construction base, could be performed in the 1983-1984 time period. The estimated cost is $24 million exclusive of shuttle launch costs. During the mission, a simple space platform could be constructed in-orbit to accommodate user requirements associated with earth viewing and materials exposure experiments needs.

Effect of rotational excitation on the band oscillator strength of OH

In the study described, a single-frequency tunable CW dye laser was used to obtain accurate absorption measurements of the band oscillator strength for various rotational-electronic lines in some transitions of OH. The band oscillator strength is shown to decrease linearly with the energy of rotational excitation. This decrease is attributed exclusively to the lengthening of the internuclear distance due to rotation.

Solar wind flows associated with hot heavy ions

Solar wind heavy ion spectra measured with the Vela instrumentation are studied to determine the solar origins of various solar wind structures which contain anomalously high ionization states. The spectra indicating hot coronal conditions were found to occur in 1/7th of all measurements and almost exclusively in postshock flows, nonshock related helium abundance enhancements, or noncompressive density enhancements. The observation of several flared-related helium abundance enhancements suggests that the flare-heated plasma can evolve into the solar wind without producing a noticeable shock at 1 AU.
