Extrapolating carbon dynamics of seasonally dry tropical forests across geographic scales and into future climates: improving simulation models with empirical observations. Final report

This research focused on seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs), a biome that exhibits strong variation in ecological, hydrological and physical characteristics. Climate change is expected to strongly impact the atmospheric environment of SDTFs, and long-term trends in precipitation seasonality have already been detected. The extent to which such changes in seasonal moisture availability will impact SDTF carbon dynamics is highly uncertain, and much of this uncertainty hinges on poorly-understood belowground processes. Thus, the central objectives of this research were to qualitatively and quantitatively describe how belowground processes mediate the response of SDTF carbon dynamics to environmental change. We accomplished these aims through field campaigns in four tropical countries to characterize soil biogeochemistry and plant hydraulic traits, ecosystem-scale field experiments that manipulated both nutrients and rainfall, and simulation modeling.

Empirical Formula for Puncture Energy of Flat Metal Plates by a Cylindrical Flat Punch

Impact problems of plate-like parts by punch-like objects with relatively large mass moving at slow speeds of a few feet per second constitute a subset of impact problems of interest at Sandia. This is in contrast to small objects moving in the range of hundreds or thousands of feet per second or higher. The objective of this work is to develop a simple formula that can be used to estimate a lower bound for the puncture energy of metal plates impacted by cylindrical, essentially rigid punches of circular cross-section and at nose. Such geometry is used as a basis in the design of puncture mitigation barriers or procedures. This was accomplished by deriving an expression using non-dimensional analysis and then calibrating it based on tests results in the range of speeds of interest. Lower bounds can then be determined based on confidence intervals or factors of safety.

Utility-Scale Solar, 2021 Edition: Empirical Trends in Deployment, Technology, Cost, Performance, PPA Pricing, and Value in the United States [Slides]

Berkeley Lab’s “Utility-Scale Solar, 2021 Edition” provides an overview of key trends in the U.S. market, with a focus on 2020. Highlights of this year’s update include: A record of nearly 9.6 GWAC of new utility-scale PV capacity came online in 2020, bringing cumulative installed capacity to more than 38.7 GWAC across 43 states. 89% of all new utility-scale PV capacity added in 2020 uses single-axis tracking. Median installed project costs declined to $\$$1.4/WAC (or $\$$1.1/WDC) in 2020. Project-level capacity factors vary widely, from 9% to 36% (on an AC basis), with a sample median of 24%. The report explores drivers of this variation. Utility-scale PV’s LCOE fell to $\$$34/MWh in 2020 ($\$$28/MWh if factoring in the federal investment tax credit, or ITC). PPA prices have largely followed the decline in solar’s LCOE over time, but have stagnated more recently. Prices from a sample of recent contracts average just above $\$$20/MWh (levelized). In 2020, solar’s average market value (defined in the report to include only energy and capacity value) exceeded average wholesale prices in 12 of the 17 balancing authorities analyzed (including 4 of the 7 independent system operators across the United States). Adding battery storage is one way to increase the value of solar. Our public data file tracks metadata for more than 150 PV+battery hybrid projects that are already online or that have secured offtake arrangements. At the end of 2020, there were at least 460 GW of utility-scale solar power capacity within the interconnection queues across the nation, 160 GW of which include batteries. Empirical Estimates of Transmission Value using Locational Marginal Prices [Slides]

This study focuses on one potential benefit of transmission infrastructure—congestion relief. It explores historical grid conditions from 2012 through the first half of 2022, and evaluates the marginal value of transmission in facilitating trade within and across regional boundaries by calculating differences in observed nodal wholesale power prices. The study finds that wholesale power prices exhibit stark geographic differences that, in many cases, are stable over time. Many regional and interregional transmission links have significant potential economic value from reducing congestion and expanding opportunities for trade. In fact, many links have hourly average pricing differences in 2021 that exceeded $\$15$/MWh—equivalent to $130 million per year for a 1000 MW link. The value of transmission is correlated with overall energy prices and varies by region and year. Critically, extreme conditions and high-value periods play an outsized role in the value of transmission, with 50% of transmission’s congestion value coming from only 5% of hours. Transmission planners run the risk of understating the benefits of regional and interregional transmission if extreme conditions and high-value periods are not adequately considered. These periods are natural features of actual market operations. As such, the study highlights the need for planners to more-comprehensively assess the value of transmission under both normal and extreme conditions.

Utility-Scale Solar, 2022 Edition: Empirical Trends in Deployment, Technology, Cost, Performance, PPA Pricing, and Value in the United States [Slides]

Berkeley Lab’s “Utility-Scale Solar, 2022 Edition” provides an overview of key trends in the U.S. market, with a focus on 2021. Highlights of this year’s update include: -A record of nearly 12.5 GWAC of new utility-scale PV capacity came online in 2021, bringing cumulative installed capacity to more than 51.3 GWAC across 44 states. -90% of all new utility-scale PV capacity added in 2021 uses single-axis tracking. -Median installed project costs declined to $\$1.35$/WAC (or $\$1.02$/WDC) in 2021. -Project-level capacity factors vary widely, from 9% to 35% (on an AC basis), with a sample median of 24%. The report explores drivers of this variation. -Utility-scale PV’s LCOE fell to $\$33$/MWh in 2021 ($\$27$/MWh if factoring in the federal investment tax credit, or ITC). -PPA prices have largely followed the decline in solar’s LCOE over time, but have recently stagnated and even moved slightly higher. Prices from a sample of recent contracts average around $\$20$/MWh (levelized) in the West and $\$30-40$/MWh elsewhere in the continental US. In 2021, solar’s average market value (defined in the report to include only energy and capacity value) rose by 55% to $\$47$/MWh and exceeded average wholesale prices in 13 of the 17 balancing authorities analyzed. -Adding battery storage is one way to increase the value of solar. Our public data file tracks metadata and PPA prices from 67 PV+battery hybrid projects that are already online or that have secured offtake arrangements. -At the end of 2021, there were at least 674 GW of utility-scale solar power capacity within the interconnection queues across the nation, 284 GW of which include batteries. Molecular Dynamics of High Pressure Tin Phases I: Strength and deformation evaluations of empirical potentials [Slides]

Multi-phase problems have so many more unknowns, we’d like to have a tool to constrain some open questions related to microstructure and twin & dislocation behavior. We want an atomistic scale perspective on aspects of strength. Some multi-scale questions accessible to atomistic study: What lattice-specific behavior influences dislocation production/mobility and/or twinning? Do the phase transformations wipe-out, modify or preserve grain size and orientation? Does plastic strain reset at phase transition? If so under what conditions? Tin is the material chosen for the effort because it is non-hazardous and has multiple accessible solid phases at relatively low pressures.

Demonstration of new fracture criteria based on micro-structure and compare to empirical model and measurements

The US nuclear industry is currently exploring extending the peak rod average burnup limits above the current regulatory limit of 62 GWd/tU. A potential concern for fuel exceeding the burnup limit is the fragmentation during a temperature transient such as a loss-of-coolant accident (LOCA). In the event of cladding failure, the fragmented fuel could relocate and disperse within the reactor. The potential impact of fuel fragmentation, relocation and dispersal (FFRD) on licensing assumptions for burnup extension has focused a great amount of efforts and research on this topic.
