Hypervolemia from Drinking Hyperhydration Solutions at Rest and Exercise

The mechanism of muscular fatigue from physical work and exercise (high metabolism) is not clear, but involves disturbances of muscle surface membrane excitation-contraction coupling from changes in sarcoplasmic reticulum Ca2+ release, cell H+ and Pi responses, and carbohydrate metabolism. Fatigue in people at rest (low metabolism) involves both psychological and physiological factors, probably in different proportions. One common factor appears to be the level and distribution of water and electrolytes within muscle cells and other vascular, interstitial, body fluid compartments. The vascular fluid volume, composed of plasma and red blood cells, is a primary regulatory factor for cardiovascular function; reduction of vascular volume (hypovolemia) and total body water (hypohydration) adversely affect exercise performance. Plasma volume and plasma ionic-osmotic constituent concentrations are also regulatory factors for body thermoregulation, which is often compromised from exercise induced hypovolemia and hypohydration. Rehydration of dehydrated people on earth is relatively easy with appropriate food (osmols), fluid, and a restful environment. But ad libitum drinking under stressful conditions; e.g., heat, exercise, or prior dehydration, results in involuntary dehydration defined as the delay in full fluid replacement (euhydration) during and following loss of body fluid. Astronauts, with their reduced total body water are euhydrated while in weightlessness, but become "dehydrated" during reentry and landing. Thus, people subjected to acute or chronic stress are probably somewhat "dehydrated" as well as fatigued. Many rehydration drinks are more concentrated (hypertonic-hyperosmotic) with respect to the normal plasma osmolality of 285 mOsm/kg H2O and more of the drink osmols are contributed by carbohydrates than by ionized substances. There have been few studies on the efficacy of various drink formulations for increasing body fluid compartment volumes, especially plasma volume, in rested hydrated subjects. Recent findings from our laboratory have indicated that drinks containing greater concentrations of ionized substances (Performance 1 and AstroAde) up to 157 mEq/L Na+ induced greater levels of hypervolemia in resting, moderately dehydrated men, and were also better than water for attenuating the characteristic hypovolemia during supine, submaximal, leg ergometer exercise.

Thermodynamic, Kinetic, and Transport Contributions to Hydrogen Evolution Activity and Electrolyte-Stability Windows for Water-in-Salt Electrolytes

Concentrated water-in-salt electrolytes (WiSEs) are used in aqueous batteries and to control electrochemical reactions for fuel production. The hydrogen evolution reaction is a parasitic reaction at the negative electrode that limits cell voltage in WiSE batteries and leads to self-discharge, and affects selectivity for electrosynthesis. Mitigating and modulating these processes is hampered by a limited fundamental understanding of HER kinetics in WiSEs. Here, in this study, we quantitatively assess how thermodynamics, kinetics, and interface layers control the apparent HER activities in 20 m LiTFSI. When the LiTFSI concentration is increased from 1 to 20 m, an increase in proton activity causes a positive shift in the HER equilibrium potential of 71 mV. The exchange current density, i o , derived from the HER branch for 20 m LiTFSI in 98% purity (0.56 ± 0.05 μA/cm Pt 2 ), however, is 8 times lower than for 20 m LiTFSI in 99.95% (4.7 ± 0.2 μA/cm Pt 2 ) and 32 times lower than for 1 m LiTFSI in 98% purity (18 ± 1 μA/cm Pt 2 ), demonstrating that the WiSE's impurities and concentration are both central in significantly suppressing HER kinetics. The ability and applicability of the reported methods are extended by examining additional WiSEs formulations made of acetates and nitrates.

Hot-Carrier Injection and Millisecond Charge Separation from a Robust Heteroleptic Iron(II) Chromophore Immobilized on TiO 2

The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization, computational analysis, and photoelectrochemical behavior of a new iron-based chromophore, [(Cpy) 2 Fe- (deeb)](PF 6 ) 2 (Fe(Cpy) 2 (deeb)), where Cpy is 1-methyl-3-(2-pyridyl)imidazole and deeb is 4,4’-(CO 2 CH 2 CH 3 ) 2 -2,2’-bipyridine, is reported. Electrochemically reversible waves assigned to a metal-centered E o (Fe III/II ) = +0.48 and a ligand-centered E o (Fe 2+/+ ) = −1.47 V vs Fc +/0 reduction were evident in cyclic voltammetry measurements. The combination of a strong σ-donor and a π-acceptor lowered the energy of the metal-toligand charge-transfer (MLCT) excited state relative to the metal-centered state. Two MLCT transitions appear in the visible region at 424 and 580 nm. TDDFT calculations revealed that the lower-energy band was well formulated as Fe(II)→deeb, and the higher-energy transition was charge transfer to both the deeb and Cpy ligands. Resonance Raman spectroscopy supports these findings showing enhanced deeb vibrational modes with 532 nm excitation, both deeb and Cpy modes with 473 nm excitation, and exclusively Cpy with 405 nm excitation. Ultrafast spectroscopy reveals a short-lived (∼2 ps) MLCT excited state and a longer-lived (∼20 ps) metal-centered state. Efficient methods to deprotect the ester groups and anchor the complex to mesoporous TiO 2 (anatase) thin films in high surface coverages, Fe(Cpy) 2 (dcb)|TiO 2 σ = 3 × 10 −8 mol/cm 2 , were established. Pulsed light excitation of Fe(Cpy) 2 (dcb)|TiO 2 resulted in rapid excited state injection (k inj > 10 8 s −1 ) and formation of a charge-separated state, Fe III (Cpy) 2 (dcb)|TiO 2 (e), which persists on the millisecond time scale before returning cleanly to the ground state with secondorder kinetics. Injection yields measured 50 ns after light excitation were found to double from Φ = 0.15 with green (532 nm) light to 0.30 with blue (457 nm) light excitation. Incident photon-to-current efficiency (% IPCE) measurements as a function of excitation wavelength in a 0.5 M LiI/I 2 /CH 3 CN electrolyte provide clear evidence for band-selective “hot carrier” injection from the remote Cpy-localized excited state. Collectively, the spectroscopic and photoelectrochemical data indicate that a semiconductor can intercept hot electrons from iron chromophores even when the excited-state dipole is oriented away from the surface-anchoring ligand.

Corrosion resistant hot melt adhesive to bind metals

Hot melt adhesives (HMAs) play an important role in many industries, and their demand is expected to grow. HMAs don't require any solvents, and their application results in the formation of strong bonds with the substrate upon cooling within seconds. These properties differentiate them from liquid glues and make them preferable for practical application. Currently, commercial HMAs are used in bonding lightweight materials such as paper, polymers, and cartons, and have limited usage in areas necessitating the bonding of heavier objects like metals. Here, in this study, we report a design and testing of versatile platform comprising an ion-coordinating polymer and ionic fillers for performance optimization and understanding of structure–property relationships, enabling the rational design of HMAs with improved adhesion to metal surfaces. All-atom Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and various characterization methods are used to elucidate the adhesion mechanism in model composite system containing polyethylene oxide mixed with chemically diverse salt particles. The maximum adhesion strength is found in composites with Al(OH) 3 and FeCl 3 fillers. Interestingly, the presence of Al(OH) 3 also provides a multifunctional anticorrosion property as measured electrochemically using the Tafel method. The discovered path to formulations with improved adhesion to metal surfaces constitutes an important step toward advancing HMAs for use in the structural and semi-structural metal work domain.

Pre-exercise hypervolemia and cycle ergometer endurance in men

Time to exhaustion at 87-91% of peak VO2 was measured in 5 untrained men (age: 31 +/- 8 years, body mass: 74.20 +/- 16.50 kg, body surface area: 1.90 +/- 0.24 m2, peak VO2: 2.87 +/- 0.40 l min-1, plasma volume: 3.21 +/- 0.88 l; means +/-SD) after consuming nothing (N) or two fluid formulations (10 ml kg-1, 743 +/- 161 ml): Performance 1 (P1), a multi-ionic carbohydrate drink, containing 55 mEq l-1 Na+, 4.16 g l-1 citrate, 20.49 g l-1 glucose, and 365 mOsm kg-1 H2O, and AstroAde (AA), a sodium chloride-sodium citrate hyperhydration drink, containing 164 mEq l-1 Na+, 8.54 g l-1 citrate, <5 mg l-1 glucose, and 253 mOsm kg-1 H2O. Mean (+/-SE) endurance for N, P1 and AA was 24.68 +/- 1.50, 24.55 +/- 1.09, and 30.50 +/- 3.44 min respectively. Percent changes in plasma volume (PV) from -105 min of rest to zero min before exercise were -1.5 +/- 3.2% (N), 0.2 +/- 2.2% (P1), and 4.8 +/- 3.0% (AA; P < 0.05). The attenuated endurance for N and P1 could not be attributed to differences in exercise metabolism (VE, RE, VO2) from the carbohydrate or citrate, terminal heart rate, levels of perceived exertion, forehead or thigh skin blood flow velocity, changes or absolute termination levels of rectal temperature. Thus, the higher level of resting PV for AA just before exercise, as well as greater acid buffering and possible increased energy substrate from citrate, may have contributed to the greater endurance.
