Dimensionality effect of conductive carbon fillers in LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 cathode

Developing advanced electrode architectures through modifying active materials, conductive fillers, binders, and electrolytes as well as processing methods has drawn significant research interest. Due to the insufficient electrical conductivity of many active materials, adding conductive carbon fillers to composite electrodes provides the necessary electrical conductivity. The dimensionality effect among different conductive fillers has a significant impact on electrochemistry, which can be associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities of electrodes. In this study, synchrotron X-ray mosaic nanotomography and X-ray spectroscopy nanoimaging provided direct three-dimensional (3D) visualization and quantification capabilities to investigate the dimensionality effects of Super P (SP) and single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) fillers on the capacity retention of LiNi 1/3 Mn 1/3 Co 1/3 O 2 (NMC111). The results indicate that NMC/SWCNT electrodes, with a wrapping effect from the SWCNTs, exhibited more homogeneous particle size distributions, morphological changes, and chemical states than NMC/SP electrodes, without the wrapping effect. This work developed a framework of 3D quantification methods to study the capacity fading behavior associated with morphological and chemical heterogeneities and paved the way toward designing electrodes for high rate energy storage applications.

Role of Complexation Strength on the Photophysical and Transport Properties of Semiconducting Charged Polymer Complexes

The high polymer fraction in complexes of conjugated and insulating polyelectrolytes offers unique opportunities for the fabrication of conductive thick films and bulk structures. The electrostatic interactions in these systems further provide a handle for controlling their structure and properties. The impact of charge-mediated complexation strength on the photophysical and electronic transport properties in blends of conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with oppositely charged polymeric ionic liquids (PILs) was examined. Complexes were formed with varying frequency of charged repeat units, from 50 to 100%, on an anionic polythiophene-based CPE and a complimentary cationic PIL. In highly charged complexes, the intimate mixing between the CPE and the PIL reduced the structural disorder along the CPE backbone, enhancing its intrachain conjugation and interchain stacking. In weakly charged complexes (<90%), these chain planarization effects were absent and microphase separation occurred. At all charge fractions examined, the electrical conductivity of an acid-doped complex was higher than that of the unblended constituent CPE. Further, the highest electrical conductivity, near 1 S cm –1 , was found for a charge fraction of 100%. These results demonstrate the potential for designing effective polymeric conductors using electrostatic complexation.

Quantifying Charge Carrier Localization in PBTTT Using Thermoelectric and Spectroscopic Techniques

Chemically doped poly[2,5-bis(3-alkylthiophen-2-yl)thieno[3,2- b ]thiophene] (PBTTT) shows promise for many organic electronic applications, but rationalizing its charge transport properties is challenging because conjugated polymers are inhomogeneous, with convoluted optical and solid-state transport properties. Herein, we use the semilocalized transport (SLoT) model to quantify how the charge transport properties of PBTTT change as a function of iron(III) chloride (FeCl 3 ) doping level. We use the SLoT model to calculate fundamental transport parameters, including the carrier density needed for metal-like electrical conductivities and the position of the Fermi energy level with respect to the transport edge. We then contextualize these parameters with other polymer-dopant systems and previous PBTTT reports. Additionally, we use grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering and spectroscopic ellipsometry techniques to better characterize inhomogeneity in PBTTT. Our analyses indicate that PBTTT obtains high electrical conductivities due to its quickly rising reduced Fermi energy level, and this rise is afforded by its locally high carrier densities in highly ordered microdomains. Ultimately, this report sets a benchmark for comparing transport properties across polymer-dopant-processing systems.

Conductive overbraid of continuous fiber thermoplastic composite tows

Here, to meet the increasing demand for lightweight materials with multifunctional capabilities, a new high-rate manufacturing method and material system, referred to as M-TOW ® (multifunctional-tow) is introduced. Overbraiding is used to incorporate highly conductive wire onto the continuous fiber reinforced tow (M-TOW ® ), offering a solution for integrating thermal and electrical conductivity into hybrid-molded composite structures. The conductivity performance of different wire configurations are compared before and after forming the M TOW ® , measuring electrical conductivities up to 5.5 x 10 5 S / cm and thermal conductivities up to 21 W / mK. Results conclude that the integration of conductive wires into thermoplastic preforms is a viable means of expanding the functionality of lightweight, high strength composite structures.

Controlling the Crystal Packing and Morphology of Metal–Organic Macrocycles through Side-Chain Modification

Supramolecular nanotubes constructed from the self-assembly of conjugated metal–organic macrocycles provide a unique collection of materials properties, including solution processability, porosity, and electrical conductivity. Here we show how small modifications to the macrocycle periphery subtly alter the noncovalent interactions governing self-assembly, leading to large changes in crystal packing, crystal morphology, and materials properties. Specifically, we synthesized five distinct copper-based macrocycles that differ in either the steric bulk, polarity, or hydrogen-bonding ability of the peripheral side chains. We show that the electrical conductivity of these macrocycles is highly sensitive to steric bulk, decreasing by 3 orders of magnitude upon introduction of peripheral neopentyl substituents. Here, we further show that the introduction of hydrogen-bonding groups leads to more ordered packing and a dramatic increase in crystallite size. Together, these results establish side-chain engineering as a rich toolkit for controlling the packing structure, particle morphology, and bulk properties of conjugated metal–organic macrocycles.

New Solids in As-O-Mo, As(P)-O-Mo(W) and As(P)-O-Nb(W) Systems That Exhibit Nonlinear Optical Properties

Interactions between well-mixed fine powders of As 2 O 3 , P 2 O 5 , MoO 3 , WO 3 and Nb 2 O 5 at different stoichiometry in quartz ampoules under vacuum at ~1000 °C in the presence of metallic molybdenum (or niobium), over several weeks, led to shiny dichroic crystalline materials being formed in cooler parts of the reaction vessel. An addition of small quantities of metals-Mo or Nb-was made with the aim of partially reducing their highly oxidized Mo(VI), W(VI) or Nb(V) species to corresponding Mo(V), W(V) and Nb(IV) centers, in order to form mixed valence solids. Sublimed crystals of four new compounds were investigated using a variety of techniques, with prime emphasis on the X-ray analysis, followed by spectroscopy (diffusion reflectance, IR, Raman and EPR), second harmonic generation (SHG), thermal analysis under N 2 and air atmosphere, and single crystals electrical conductivity studies. The results evidenced the formation of new complex solids of previously unknown compositions and structures. Three out of four compounds crystallized in non-centrosymmetric space groups and represent layered 2D polymeric puckered structures that being stacked on each other form 3D lattices. All new solids exhibit strong second-harmonic-generation (SHG effect; based on YAG 1064 nm tests with detection of 532 nm photons), and a rare photosalient effect when crystals physically move in the laser beam. Single crystals’ electrical conductivity of the four new synthesized compounds was measured, and the results showed their semiconductor behavior. Values of band gaps of these new solids were determined using diffusion reflectance spectroscopy in the visible region. Aspects of new solids’ practical usefulness are discussed.

Soil water content, matric potential, carbon dioxide and oxygen concentrations, Oct 2018-Dec 2021, Slate River Floodplain, Crested Butte, Colorado

This data package includes a time series of soil sensor data (temperature, water content, bulk electrical conductivity, porewater dissolved oxygen and porewater dissolved carbon dioxide) in a vertical profile from the Slate River floodplain outside Crested Butte, Colorado, a focus field site for the SLAC Floodplain Hydro-Biogeochemistry SFA. The data was generated as part of the work targeting the overarching research question for the SLAC SFA: How do ubiquitous subsurface interfaces mediate molecular-scale biogeochemical processes and groundwater quality in floodplains and watersheds? The package includes: (1) soil temperature, volumetric water content and electrical conductivity at 40, 60 and 82.5 cm depth; (2) soil matric potential at 40, 60, 79 and 100 cm depth; (3) soil CO2 concentrations at 40, 60 and 82.5 cm depth; and (4) soil oxygen concentrations at 60, 82.5, 100, 135, 170 and 182 cm depth. Both the carbon dioxide and oxygen sensors are optical sensors that can measure the partial pressure of oxygen in both saturated and unsaturated conditions. Unfortunately, soil CO2 in the profile is unexpectedly high and above the sensor calibration range (0-25,000 ppm). In addition, soil CO2 sensors failed within a year of deployment, so we only report CO2 data from 2019-2020.Within the data package, "FLMD.csv" describes file-level metadata and "dd.csv" defines column headers and universal terms across the dataset. The data package includes 4 "*data.csv" files, one for each calendar year in the dataset. Each "*data.csv" file has a corresponding "*_InstallationMethods.csv" file that describes the location, sensor model, sensor serial number and other metadata corresponding for each measured parameter. Because sensors have been added over time, not every sensor has data dating back to Oct 2018. Note that there is a data gap over winter 2019-2020 due to a power outage. While this repository currently only contains data through December 2021, the dataset will be updated as additional years are collected and processed.

Unprecedented electrical performance of friction-extruded copper-graphene composites

Copper-graphene composites show remarkable electrical performance surpassing traditional copper conductors albeit at a micron scale; there are several challenges in demonstrating similar performance at the bulk scale. In this study, we used shear extrusion to synthesize macro-scale copper-graphene composites with a simultaneously lower temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) and improved electrical conductivity over copper-only samples. We showed that the addition of 18 ppm of graphene decreased the TCR of C11000 alloy by nearly 11%. A suite of characterization tools involving scanning and transmission electron microscopy along with atom probe tomography were used to characterize the grain size, crystallographic orientation, structure, and composition of copper grains and graphene additives in the feedstock and processed samples. We posit that the shear extrusion process may have transformed some of the feedstock graphene additives into higher defect-density agglomerates while retaining the structure of others as mono-to-trilete flakes with lower defect density. The combination of these additives with heterogeneous structures may have been responsible for the simultaneous decrease in TCR and enhanced electrical conductivity of the copper-graphene ShAPE composites.

Experimental Measurement of Particle-to-Particle Heat Transfer in Nanoparticle Solids

Thermal conductivity in nanoparticle solids has been previously reported in the range of 0.1-1 W m -1 K -1 , which is a much smaller variation than the orders of magnitude differences achievable in electrical conductivity of similar systems. Both the low absolute magnitude of thermal conductivity and the relative insensitivity compared to electrical conductivity may be largely attributed to the poor interfacial thermal conductance of the many interfaces of the nanocrystal solid, but a direct experimental study of these interfaces is challenging. Here, in this work, we overcome this challenge via direct spectroscopic observation of heat flow within the components of a nanocrystal solid. These thermal transfers are studied by mixing two distinct types of particles: one that serves as a selectively excited antenna to inject heat and the other as the thermal acceptor to report the time-dependent change in temperature. Using transient spectroscopy, the equilibration between the heat donor and heat acceptor is observed to require similar to ~300 ps at room temperature, speeds up at reduced temperature, and has only weak sensitivity to the relative stoichiometry of the components or the intervening ligands. These results contrast strongly with the 10-20 ps time-scale of through-bond heat transfer at the ligand-particle surface and highlight the substantially lower interfacial thermal conductance of particle-to-particle transport without covalent bonding. It is also found, serendipitously, that the mixed composite films show an unexpected, substantially enhanced nonlinear absorption at the resonant wavelength of the plasmonic particles, which is tentatively attributed to a local field enhancement.

Through‐Plane Conductive Hydrophobic Electrodes for CO 2 Electrolysis to Ethylene

Copper catalyst gas diffusion electrodes (GDEs) have demonstrated unique electrochemical selectivity converting CO 2 to C 2 -hydrocarbons such as ethylene and ethanol but have been challenged by their hydrophobic chemical stability and internal electrical resistance leading to low energy efficiency. Carbon-supported GDEs have low electrical resistance but lack sufficient stability at industrially relevant current densities. While polymer-supported GDEs have improved hydrophobicity, they also display high in-plane electrical resistance, particularly at industrial scales. Here, in this work, we demonstrate a composite gas diffusion layer that combines hydrophobic porous polymers with an electrically conductive backbone addressing these core gas diffusion electrode (GDE) scaling challenges. We investigate the material properties of standalone porous perfluoropolyether (PFPE) polymers, including porosity and surface morphology, under varying processing conditions and then incorporate these polymers into a porous copper foam. This composite enhances the mechanical rigidity necessary for cell assembly and provides a through-plane electrical conduction path to reduce electrical resistive losses. This enhanced PFPE composite GDE displays efficient CO 2 reduction, achieving 15% ethylene energy efficiency at 100 cm 2 . These findings contribute to the development of advanced catalyst materials and electrode architectures and promote scalable strategies for electrochemical conversion of CO 2 into high-value carbon products.

Composition Dependent Electrochemical Properties of Earth-Abundant Ternary Nitride Anodes

Growing energy storage demands on lithium-ion batteries necessitate exploration of new electrochemical materials as next-generation battery electrode materials. In this work, we investigate the previously unexplored electrochemical properties of earth-abundant and tunable Zn 1-x Sn 1+x N 2 (x = -0.4 to x = 0.4) thin films, which show high electrical conductivity and high gravimetric capacity for Li insertion. Enhanced cycling performance is achieved compared to previously published end-members Zn 3 N 2 and Sn 3 N 4 , showing decreased irreversible loss and increased total capacity and cycle stability. The average reversible capacity observed is >1050 mAh/g for all compositions and 1220 mAh/g for Zn-poor (x = 0.2) films. Extremely Zn-rich films (x = -0.4) show improved adhesion; however, Zn-rich films undergo a phase transformation on the first cycle. Zn-poor and stoichiometric films do not exhibit significant phase transformations which often plague nitride materials and show no required overpotential at the 0.5 V plateau. Cation composition x is explored as a mechanism for tuning relevant mechanical and electrochemical properties, such as capacity, overpotential, phase transformation, electrical conductivity, and adhesion. The lithiation/delithiation experiments confirm the reversible electrochemical reactions. Without any binding additives, the as-deposited electrodes delaminate resulting in fast capacity degradation. We demonstrate the mechanical nature of this degradation through decreased electrode thinning, resulting in cells with improved cycling stability due to increased mechanical stability. Combining composition and electrochemical analysis, this work demonstrates for the first time composition dependent electrochemical properties for the ternary Zn 1-x Sn 1+x N 2 and proposes earth-abundant ternary nitride anodes for increased reversible capacity and cycling stability.

Ultrastrong Ionotronic Films Showing Electrochemical Osmotic Actuation

Abstract A multifunctional soft material with high ionic and electrical conductivity, combined with high mechanical properties and the ability to change shape can enable bioinspired responsive devices and systems. The incorporation of all these characteristics in a single material is very challenging, as the improvement of one property tends to reduce other properties. Here, a nanocomposite film based on charged, high‐aspect‐ratio 1D flexible nanocellulose fibrils, and 2D Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is presented. The self‐assembly process results in a stratified structure with the nanoparticles aligned in‐plane, providing high ionotronic conductivity and mechanical strength, as well as large water uptake. In hydrogel form with 20 wt% liquid, the electrical conductivity is over 200 S cm −1 and the in‐plane tensile strength is close to 100 MPa. This multifunctional performance results from the uniquely layered composite structure at nano‐ and mesoscales. A new type of electrical soft actuator is assembled where voltage as low as ±1 V resulted in osmotic effects and giant reversible out‐of‐plane swelling, reaching 85% strain.
