Tool pre-tensions covers prior to lacing

In securing a bulky object in a storage compartment, a cinching or tightening tool is used to draw two opposing cover halves together at a predetermined tension to permit quick lacing to retain the stored object. This tool is also useful in fabrication industries to draw components together during assembly or treating.

Bioresearch Module Design Definition and Space Shuttle Vehicle Integration Study. Volume 1: Basic Report

Preliminary designs of the Bioexplorer spacecraft, developed in an earlier study program, are analyzed and updated to conform to a new specification which includes use of both the Scout and the space shuttle vehicle for launch. The updated spacecraft is referred to as bioresearch module. It is capable of supporting a variety of small biological experiments in near-earth and highly elliptical earth orbits. The baseline spacecraft design is compatible with the Scout launch vehicle. Inboard profile drawings, weight statements, interface drawings, and spacecraft parts and aerospace ground equipment lists are provided to document the design. The baseline design was analyzed to determine the design and cost impact of a set of optional features. These include reduced experiment power and thermal load, addition of an experiment television monitor, and replacement of VHF with S-band communications. The impact of these options on power required, weight change and cost is defined.

Development of a method for fabricating metallic matrix composite shapes by a continuous mechanical process

The continuing efforts in upscaling to produce larger diameter Al/B tubes are described. While the basic methodology remains unchanged, the larger volume of acrylic binder material and its removal by dissolution in toluene had to be performed by dynamic scrubbing. Similarly, the boron and MCF continuous length requirements increased when a 6 foot long by 7 inches wide mat was needed. These modifications and associated problems are described fully with schematics. Also included are seven experiments conducted to prepare larger tubes. The thermal profile, drawing speeds, and furnace positions in the draw bench bay are presented along with metallographic evidence of composite cross sections.

Thermally oscillating actuators

The actuator was redesigned to accommodate the new thermal motor for the Helios flipper. This design retained the basic configuration and dimensions of the original actuator. Changes were made primarily to the cradle and motor assembly. Because of the increased dimensions of the thermal motor, it was necessary to increase the diameter of the pellet case and associated parts including the back off spring and the piston return spring. The new springs were designed to yield the same spring rate differential as the originals. The design effort resulted in a new top assembly and approximately twenty sub-assembly and detail drawings. A list of drawings generated by EMR is attached.

A Structural Design for an Externally Blown Flap (EBF) Medium STOL Research Aircraft

A computer program to predict, by reference to structural drawings, the dynamic response of a high lift STOL wing with externally blown flaps was developed. Structural data for the computer program are presented in the form of sketches, weight and dynamic loads information graphs, and tables for an external blown, triple-slotted flap, high lift STOL transport wing. Weight, mass distribution, and moment of inertia data are summarized in table form and presented pictorially by drawing layout. The methods used for obtaining weight data were: (1) actual know, weight of components, (2) preliminary stress sizing, and (3) statistical weight estimating methods.

Maximum power transfer in n ports with passive loads

The problem of drawing maximum power from an n port by suitably terminating it with another passive n port is studied. Methods are derived for determining sets of passive impedance matrices which are 'optimal' in the sense that they draw maximum power from a given n port. It is shown that, in all nontrivial cases, if there exists any (passive or otherwise) optimum-load impedance matrix, then there exist, in fact, infinitely many passive optimum-load impedance matrices.

On the computational cost of approximating and recognizing noise-perturbed straight lines and quadratic arcs in the plane

Recognition of underlying straight lines and quadratic arcs in line drawings, and approximation of very noisy data by such line/curve segments, is addressed as a subproblem of the more general problem of optimum recognition of complicated line/curve drawings. Some specific algorithms are presented with extensions and interpretations for more complicated applications, and a data generation model is developed for the problem. Data are generated as a perturbation of a single underlying straight line or an elliptic or hyperbolic arc. Recursive estimation techniques, minimization of central processing unit time, decision making with controlled error probabilities, and modeling and recognition of pictures consisting of noisy curves are dealt with. Applications envisaged include: picture data compression, contour line representation in maps, intelligent data searches, and ballistic missile decoy tracking.

Study of high resistance inorganic coatings on graphite fibers

Coatings made of boron, silicon carbide, silica, and silica-like materials were studied to determine their ability to increase resistance of graphite fibers. The most promising results were attained by chemical vapor depositing silicon carbide on graphite fiber followed by oxidation, and drawing graphite fiber through ethyl silicate followed by appropriate heat treatments. In the silicon carbide coating studies, no degradation of the graphite fibers was observed and resistance values as high as three orders of magnitude higher than that of the uncoated fiber was attained. The strength of a composite fabricated from the coated fiber had a strength which compared favorably with those of composites prepared from uncoated fiber. For the silica-like coated fiber prepared by drawing the graphite fiber through an ethyl silicate solution followed by heating, coated fiber resistances about an order of magnitude greater than that of the uncoated fiber were attained. Composites prepared using these fibers had flexural strengths comparable with those prepared using uncoated fibers, but the shear strengths were lower.
