Periodic Motions in Banach Space and Applications to Functional-Differential Equations

In establishing the existence of periodic solutions for nonautonomous differential equations of the form x = g(x, t), where g is periodic in t of period ω for fixed x, it is often convenient to consider the translation operator T(x(t)) = x(t + ω). If corresponding to each initial vector chosen in an appropriate region there corresponds a unique solution of our equation, then periodicity may be established by proving the existence of a fixed point under T. This same technique is also useful for more general functional equations and can be extended in a number of interesting ways. In this paper we shall consider a variable type of translation operator which is useful in investigating periodicity for autonomous differential and functional equations where the period involved is less obvious.

A Semi-Analytical Solution Approach for Solving Constant-Coefficient First-Order Partial Differential Equations

Simulation and control of many dynamic systems involve solving partial differential equations (PDE). This letter proposes a semi-analytical solution (SAS) approach for fast and high-quality solution of first-order PDEs. The region of interest of the studied PDE is divided into a grid, and an SAS is derived for each grid cell in the form of the multivariate polynomials, of which the coefficients are identified using initial value and boundary value conditions. The solutions are solved in a “time-stepping” manner, i.e. within one time step, the coefficients of the SAS are identified and the initial value of the next time step is evaluated. This approach achieves a significantly larger grid cell than the widely used finite difference method, and thus enhances the computational efficiency significantly. Furthermore, the simulation result on the natural gas pipeline model demonstrates the advantages of SAS in accuracy and computational efficiency.

Numerical method for solution of systems of non-stationary spatially one-dimensional nonlinear differential equations

A computational scheme and a standard program is proposed for solving systems of nonstationary spatially one-dimensional nonlinear differential equations using Newton's method. The proposed scheme is universal in its applicability and its reduces to a minimum the work of programming. The program is written in the FORTRAN language and can be used without change on electronic computers of type YeS and BESM-6. The standard program described permits the identification of nonstationary (or stationary) solutions to systems of spatially one-dimensional nonlinear (or linear) partial differential equations. The proposed method may be used to solve a series of geophysical problems which take chemical reactions, diffusion, and heat conductivity into account, to evaluate nonstationary thermal fields in two-dimensional structures when in one of the geometrical directions it can take a small number of discrete levels, and to solve problems in nonstationary gas dynamics.

Application of functional analysis to perturbation theory of differential equations

The deviation of the solution of the differential equation y' = f(t, y), y(O) = y sub O from the solution of the perturbed system z' = f(t, z) + g(t, z), z(O) = z sub O was investigated for the case where f and g are continuous functions on I x R sup n into R sup n, where I = (o, a) or I = (o, infinity). These functions are assumed to satisfy the Lipschitz condition in the variable z. The space Lip(I) of all such functions with suitable norms forms a Banach space. By introducing a suitable norm in the space of continuous functions C(I), introducing the problem can be reduced to an equivalent problem in terminology of operators in such spaces. A theorem on existence and uniqueness of the solution is presented by means of Banach space technique. Norm estimates on the rate of growth of such solutions are found. As a consequence, estimates of deviation of a solution due to perturbation are obtained. Continuity of the solution on the initial data and on the perturbation is established. A nonlinear perturbation of the harmonic oscillator is considered a perturbation of equations of the restricted three body problem linearized at libration point.
