Multi-Source Data Aggregation and Real-Time Anomaly Classification and Localization in Power Distribution Systems

This paper proposes a real-time anomaly location and classification framework for power distribution systems to simultaneously determine the type of anomaly (i.e., short-circuit fault, cyber attack, DER switching) and its location. The proposed framework employs the data aggregation module to collect the measurement data from multiple field devices operating at different sampling rates, such as protection relays and D-PMUs. The output of the data aggregation is then fed into a multi-task learning-based long-based short-term memory (MTL-LSTM) to classify the type of anomaly and the location in two separate tasks. The proposed MTL-LSTM approach can be utilized in real-time operation in order to distinguish between normal and several anomalous operations and locate the anomaly. The proposed framework is tested on a modified IEEE 33-bus test feeder benchmark that integrates solar generation and energy storage. Furthermore, the results show that the proposed framework can locate and classify anomalies for several operation conditions with more than 96% accuracy. Further experiments highlight the impact of aggregating multiple sources of data on the performance of the proposed model.

Performance and reliability of β-Ga 2 O 3 Schottky barrier diodes at high temperature

Beta-gallium oxide (ß-Ga 2 O 3 ) is an ultrawide bandgap semiconductor that has potential for power electronic applications and devices operating at high temperatures. Particularly important for these applications are its 4.9 eV bandgap, facile electron doping, and the ability to grow ß-Ga 2 O 3 crystals from the melt. In this work, vertical ß-Ga 2 O 3 Schottky barrier diodes were fabricated using Pt Schottky and Ti-based Ohmic contacts and Au contact pads on unintentionally doped n-type, (2¯01)-oriented single crystal substrates. The diode’s temperature-dependent electrical properties up to 400°C were investigated, and the Pt/Ga 2 O 3 Schottky barrier height was determined to be close to 1.2 eV. The degradation of the contacts over multiple cycles up to 400°C was observed, resulting in a significant increase in series resistance of the diodes by 1000× at ambient temperature after they were cycled. According to electron microscopy measurements, this degradation is likely due in part to the migration and oxidation of Ti at the top surface of the Au contact pads. This degradation highlights the need for further research and development to ensure stable Ohmic and Schottky contacts to Ga 2 O 3 at temperatures above 400°C.

Persistent optical phenomena in oxide semiconductors

The interaction of transparent oxide semiconductors with light is critically important for a range of applications. Persistent effects could be exploited for holographic memory or optically defined circuits. Conversely, they may also be detrimental to device operation. Large, room-temperature persistent photoconductivity (PPC) was discovered in strontium titanate (SrTiO 3 , STO) after annealing in a hydrogen-containing atmosphere. Barium titanate (BaTiO 3 , BTO), a ferroelectric material, was recently found to also exhibit PPC. Room-temperature photodarkening was observed in Cu-doped gallium oxide (β-Ga 2 O 3 ) after exposure to sub-bandgap light. Hydrogen is believed to play a central role in these persistent phenomena. In the proposed model, a photon excites substitutional hydrogen (a proton inside an oxygen vacancy), making the defect unstable. The proton leaves and binds to a host oxygen atom, forming an O-H bond that is observed with infrared spectroscopy. Here, an oxygen vacancy is left behind. Because oxygen vacancies in STO and BTO are shallow donors, this process results in PPC. In β-Ga 2 O 3 :Cu, however, the oxygen vacancy neighbors a Cu acceptor. In that case, photoexcitation results in the rare Cu 3+ state, which absorbs visible light. The effect can be “erased” by annealing at 300-400°C.

Universal phase dynamics in VO 2 switches revealed by ultrafast operando diffraction

Understanding the pathways and time scales underlying electrically driven insulator-metal transitions is crucial for uncovering the fundamental limits of device operation. Using stroboscopic electron diffraction, we perform synchronized time-resolved measurements of atomic motions and electronic transport in operating vanadium dioxide (VO 2 ) switches. We discover an electrically triggered, isostructural state that forms transiently on microsecond time scales, which is shown by phase-field simulations to be stabilized by local heterogeneities and interfacial interactions between the equilibrium phases. This metastable phase is similar to that formed under photoexcitation within picoseconds, suggesting a universal transformation pathway. Our results establish electrical excitation as a route for uncovering nonequilibrium and metastable phases in correlated materials, opening avenues for engineering dynamical behavior in nanoelectronics.

Optimal Experimental Design for Inverse Problems in the Presence of Observation Correlations

Optimal experimental design (OED) is the general formalism of sensor placement and decisions on the data collection strategy for engineered or natural experiments. This problem is prevalent in many critical fields such as battery design, numerical weather prediction, geosciences, environmental and urban studies. State-of-the-art computational methods for experimental design do not accommodate correlation structure in observational errors produced by many expensive-to-operate devices such as X-ray machines, radars, and satellites. Discarding evident data correlations leads to biased results, higher expenses, and waste of valuable resources. We present a general formulation of the OED formalism for model-constrained large-scale Bayesian linear inverse problems, where measurement errors are generally correlated. The proposed approach utilizes the Hadamard product of matrices to formulate the weighted-likelihood, and is valid for both finite as well as infinite-dimensional Bayesian inverse problems. Extensive numerical experiments are carried out for empirical verification of the proposed approach using an advection-diffusion model, where the objective is to optimally place a small set of sensors, under a limited budget, to predict the concentration of a contaminant in a closed and bounded domain.

Electrochemical Residence Time Distribution as a Diagnostic Tool for Redox Flow Batteries

The fluid dynamic and electrochemical performance of redox flow batteries (RFBs) stems from the relationship between the flow field and the porous electrode, whose interplay determines how active species move and react during device operation. While characterization techniques, such as residence time distribution, offer insights into species mobility within a reactive volume for a traditional chemical reactor, electrochemical reactors also enable simultaneous measurement of the redox reactions, unlocking another dimension of analysis. Herein, we demonstrate how potentiodynamic measurements, using injections of electrolyte examined through moment analysis, can provide electrode-specific performance scaling relationships across a matrix of carbon paper and cloth electrodes with flow through and interdigitated flow fields. We further combine experimental campaigns with multiphysics simulations to demonstrate how electrode surface area can be estimated with this technique, which we then validate with activated and unactivated commercial carbon cloth electrodes. These studies reveal the multiscale observations that potentiodynamic measurements afford, augmenting existing electrochemical techniques for holistic electrochemical reactor diagnostics.

Web Based Beamline Control System (Bluesky Web) v0.1.0

Bluesky Web is a web based interface that provides beam line controls to the end user. It allows users to issue commands to various physical devices at a beam line end station like motors and cameras. It utilizes an open source Python library (Bluesky) as the controller. It uses Bluesky to also allow for running "plans" or a sequence of device operations that can be used when running an experiment. This program is different from other controls technologies because it is intended to be open source and can be accessed from a web browser, as opposed to other paid software that is run as a stand-alone application on a computer.

Ultrafast carrier dynamics in terahertz photoconductors and photomixers: beyond short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors

Abstract Efficient terahertz generation and detection are a key prerequisite for high performance terahertz systems. Major advancements in realizing efficient terahertz emitters and detectors were enabled through photonics-driven semiconductor devices, thanks to the extremely wide bandwidth available at optical frequencies. Through the efficient generation and ultrafast transport of charge carriers within a photo-absorbing semiconductor material, terahertz frequency components are created from the mixing products of the optical frequency components that drive the terahertz device – a process usually referred to as photomixing. The created terahertz frequency components, which are in the physical form of oscillating carrier concentrations, can feed a terahertz antenna and get radiated in case of a terahertz emitter, or mix with an incoming terahertz wave to down-convert to DC or to a low frequency photocurrent in case of a terahertz detector. Realizing terahertz photoconductors typically relies on short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors as the photo-absorbing material, where photocarriers are quickly trapped within one picosecond or less after generation, leading to ultrafast carrier dynamics that facilitates high-frequency device operation. However, while enabling broadband operation, a sub-picosecond lifetime of the photocarriers results in a substantial loss of photoconductive gain and optical responsivity. In addition, growth of short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors in many cases relies on the use of rare elements and non-standard processes with limited accessibility. Therefore, there is a strong motivation to explore and develop alternative techniques for realizing terahertz photomixers that do not rely on these defect-introduced short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors. This review will provide an overview of several promising approaches to realize terahertz emitters and detectors without short-carrier-lifetime semiconductors. These novel approaches utilize p-i-n diode junctions, plasmonic nanostructures, ultrafast spintronics, and low-dimensional materials to offer ultrafast carrier response. These innovative directions have great potentials for extending the applicability and accessibility of the terahertz spectrum for a wide range of applications.

Proton Tunable Analog Transistor for Low Power Computing

This project was broadly motivated by the need for new hardware that can process information such as images and sounds right at the point of where the information is sensed (e.g. edge computing). The project was further motivated by recent discoveries by group demonstrating that while certain organic polymer blends can be used to fabricate elements of such hardware, the need to mix ionic and electronic conducting phases imposed limits on performance, dimensional scalability and the degree of fundamental understanding of how such devices operated. As an alternative to blended polymers containing distinct ionic and electronic conducting phases, in this LDRD project we have discovered that a family of mixed valence coordination compounds called Prussian blue analogue (PBAs), with an open framework structure and ability to conduct both ionic and electronic charge, can be used for inkjet-printed flexible artificial synapses that reversibly switch conductance by more than four orders of magnitude based on electrochemically tunable oxidation state. Retention of programmed states is improved by nearly two orders of magnitude compared to the extensively studied organic polymers, thus enabling in-memory compute and avoiding energy costly off-chip access during training. We demonstrate dopamine detection using PBA synapses and biocompatibility with living neurons, evoking prospective application for brain - computer interfacing. By application of electron transfer theory to in-situ spectroscopic probing of intervalence charge transfer, we elucidate a switching mechanism whereby the degree of mixed valency between N-coordinated Ru sites controls the carrier concentration and mobility, as supported by density functional theory (DFT) .
